Woman hit and killed on US-69 in Overland Park

Overland Park Police say an adult female pedestrian was hit by a vehicle just before 12:30 Thursday morning.

In a news release, police say a vehicle was traveling northbound on U.S. 69 Highway north of 103rd Street when the driver lost control and struck the median barrier.

"A passenger in that vehicle exited the car and was struck by a second vehicle also traveling northbound on U.S. 69 Highway," the release says.

The crash threw the female pedestrian over the median barrier and into the southbound lanes of the highway.

Johnson County Med-Act and the Overland Park Fire Department responded to both sides of the highway.

The female was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center Center in critical condition.

Overland Park Police say the woman later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Captain Brian Houlahan says the woman's name is not being released until next of kin can be notified.
All lanes of southbound side and three left lanes on the northbound side U.S. 69 Highway were closed after the crash and reopened about 3:15 a.m.

The department's traffic safety unit continues to investigate. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is being asked to contact Overland Park Police at 913-895-6413.

Overland Park woman killed in late-night crash

Overland Park Police say they're investigating after a woman was killed in a crash on U.S. 69 Highway late Monday.

In a news release, Public Information Officer John Lacy says police were called about 11:10 p.m. for a possible injury accident.

"A 19-year-old Overland Park woman was killed when she struck a concrete wall as she was exiting southbound U.S. 69 Highway at College Boulevard," Ofc. Lacy said in the release.

The woman's name will not be released until her family can be notified.

The Overland Park Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the crash. Anyone with information regarding this crash can contact Overland Park Police at 913-895-6300.

Eight people injured in 22 vehicles accident | Numerous accidents throughout the area

Emergency crews from at least five area agencies responded on a big accident Sunday morning.

The accident was first reported just before 6:30 a.m. on the overpass from southbound Interstate 35 to to southbound U.S. 69 Highway.

Lenexa Police arrived to report 15-20 vehicles involved in an accident that was completely blocking the highway.

Firefighters from Overland Park, Lenexa and Merriam all responded when the incident was upgraded to a Level I MCI (mass-casualty incident).

Johnson County Med-Act says eight people were injured and transported to an area hospital.

Ambulances transported nearly 20, who were not injured, to a nearby fire station to keep warm.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says at least 22 vehicles were involved in the accident, least 15 of those vehicles were towed away from the scene.

Both southbound lanes reopened to traffic at 9:50 a.m. Sunday.

Other accidents:

Sunday morning's rain and snow caused traffic problems across the Kansas City area. Accidents were reported in various locations around the south side of the Interstate 435 loop, Kansas Highway 10 near De Soto and Interstate 70 near Lawrence.

Around 3 a.m., Lawrence fire medical crews, police and Kansas Turnpike troopers responded on at least four accidents on the Interstate 70 turnpike. Two people were seriously injured in a rollover accident. A total of six people were treated for minor injuries in various different accidents on I-70 in Douglas County. Just after 3 a.m., Lenexa police closed the flyover ramp from westbound I-435 to southbound I-35 following a seven vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

Around 3:15 a.m., Overland Park police were forced to close both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-435 after several accidents caused by vehicles travelling too fast over the Metcalf bridge. One of these accidents involved a vehicle crashing into the back of an Overland Park police department vehicle that was on the scene of an earlier accident. The officer was not injured. No serious injuries were reported.

At 3:20 a.m., Leawood police and fire crews, along with Kansas City, Missouri police closed all eastbound and westbound lanes of I-435 at State Line Road following several accidents and slide offs. One of the accidents involved four vehicles. No serious injuries were reported.

Overland Park Police vehicle rear-ended on US-69

Overland Park Police are investigating after a patrol vehicle was rear-ended on U.S. 69 Highway this morning.

Officers were investigating a minor injury accident in the southbound lanes of the highway when a suspected intoxicated driver crashed into the back of a stopped police vehicle, about 12:50 a.m. Sunday.




No one was injured in the crash and officers have detained the driver for suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

The crash forced officers to shut down all southbound lanes of the highway between 179th Street and 199th Street. All southbound lanes were reopened before 3 a.m..

This morning's accident is the third collision involving stopped Overland Park patrol vehicles on area highways already in 2014.

On January 14th, an officer sustained minor injuries when her parked patrol vehicle was rear-ended in the northbound lanes of U.S. 69 Highway just to the south of 183rd Street as she was investigating an accident. Previous report.

The second accident occurred on Interstate 435 near Metcalf Avenue on January 31st. Again, an officer was stopped on the side of the highway investigating an accident when his patrol vehicle was struck from behind. The officer suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released.

Overland Park officer injured in car accident

An Overland Park police officer has been transported to an area hospital this morning after her patrol vehicle was rear-ended on U.S. 69 highway.

Around 3:20 a.m., Overland Park Police and Fire units were called to investigate a rollover accident on northbound U.S. 69 highway, south of 183rd Street. Officers arrived and found the driver of the vehicle was not injured in the crash.


At approximately 4:20 a.m., Overland Park Police reported that one of their patrol vehicles at the accident scene had been rear-ended. A fire unit was still on the scene from the initial accident and quickly requested an ambulance to the scene for an injured police officer.

Johnson County Fire District No. 2 responded to the scene and transported the officer to an area hospital as a precaution. Her injuries are described as minor.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies and Overland Park Police blocked off  all northbound lanes of U.S. 69 while the accident was cleaned up. One northbound lane was reopened at 5:15 a.m.. Southbound traffic was not impacted by either accident.

Olathe Police are on the scene handling the investigation of the officer involved accident.

VIDEO: Fire engine involved in traffic accident

The Overland Park Police Department is investigating after a fire apparatus was involved in an accident this morning.

The Overland Park Fire Department says the accident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Friday, when one of their fire engines was struck from behind by a mini-van. It happened on the westbound Interstate 435 ramp to Quivira Road. Damage to the mini-van and fire engine is described as moderate. No injuries were reported in the accident.

At the time of the accident, the fire engine was responding to a reported accident in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 435 between Quivira and U.S. 69 Highway. A second fire apparatus was sent on the initial accident call, where one non life-threatening injury was reported.

Both accidents remain under investigation.

Operation 100 News was the only media reporting on both accidents as they unfolded. As of this report, no other media has made any public mention of either accident.

VIDEO: One person sent to an area hospital following a morning house fire

Overland Park fire crews are investigating what sparked a kitchen fire this morning.

The fire was reported just before 5:40 Tuesday morning at 10212 Melrose Drive. A resident reported a fire in the kitchen.

First fire crews arrived on the scene at 5:43 a.m. to report "light smoke showing."

Crews made their way inside the split level home and confirmed what the resident had reported, a working fire in the kitchen.

The resident of the home was outside the structure when firefighters arrived. A man in his 30's was transported to an area hospital by Johnson County Med-Act. He is said to have symptoms of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide exposure.

While conducting routine searches of the home, firefighters located and rescued the family dog from the home. The dog was not injured and was found hiding in a bedroom.

The fire was reported under control at 5:53, and was reported to be out at 6:00.

Firefighters believe the man was cooking on the stove, when he left something unattended. Smoke alarms alerted the man to the fire. Fire officials describe his injuries as minor. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Investigators say fire damage is contained to the kitchen, with smoke damage throughout the house.

Operation 100 News broke this story to the public at 5:41 a.m. (tweet below). No reports from any other Kansas City area news media until after 6:30 a.m., more than 30 minutes after firefighters had extinguished the fire and began to leave the scene. One media outlet even reported "firefighters arrived to find flames visible," this was simply untrue according the fire department.

Shawnee man killed in motorcycle accident

The Kansas Highway Patrol says a 38-year-old, Shawnee man was killed in a motorcycle accident Monday morning on Interstate 35 in Lenexa.

The Highway Patrol's accident report says the accident happened at approximately 1:25 a.m. on the northbound Interstate 35 exit ramp to 75th Street. The accident scene was just before the long tunnel which runs under U.S. 69 Highway, just inside of Lenexa.


Troopers have identified the rider as Jason M. Gearhart of Shawnee, Kansas. Gearhart was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident report says Gearhart's 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle left the roadway for an unknown reason and went into the right ditch. The motorcycle then struck the rock boulders and the rider was thrown.

Troopers say Gearhart was not wearing a helmet.

Another motorcyclist was following Gearhart when the accident occurred and stopped to report the accident. Troopers say speed may have played a role in the accident, no other vehicles contributed to the accident's cause.

The ramp was closed by Lenexa Police at 1:30 a.m. and reopened to all traffic shortly before 7 a.m..

Rollover crash critically injures one in Johnson County

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a serious one car accident this morning.

Emergency crews were called to a rollover accident in the 19000 block of U.S. 69 Highway at approximately 2:10 a.m., in Aubry Township. The car was reportedly traveling northbound on the highway when it left the roadway and rolled several times down an embankment.

Johnson County Fire District #2 crews found the car on its side and leaning against a shed in the backyard of an address in the 19000 block of Lowell Avenue. Firefighters estimated the car to be 100-150 feet from the highway, with "extremely heavy damage."

The driver, said to be a female in her 40's, was the only occupant of the red BMW convertible and was partially pinned under the vehicle for a short time. She suffered critical injuries and has been transported to an area trauma center for further treatment.

A source familiar with the accident tells Operation 100 News that the driver reported that she swerved to miss a skunk that was crossing the highway.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate and has not confirmed any other details.

Three JoCo convenience stores robbed in less than a week

Overland Park Police are investigating following the armed robbery of a convenience store. The third such robbery in less than a week's time. Links to the earlier stories can be found below.

Police say they were called to the Kicks 66 at 8150 W. 151st Street at approximately 6:30 a.m..

Two males entered the store and demanded money and other merchandise from the clerk. Both men were wearing ski masks, one was armed with a rifle and the other had a black handgun.

The pair ordered the clerk to the floor before they fled in a red mid-size vehicle. The vehicle was last seen turning northbound onto U.S. 69 Highway.

Police say the man carrying the rifle was last seen wearing a dark hooded jacket, blue jeans, tennis shoes and a black ski mask. The man with the handgun was wearing a brown jacket, red shirt, white shoes, black gloves and ski mask.

The clerk did not report any injuries in the incident.

This incident is the third convenience store robbery in just under a week, two of them just this weekend. The first was in Shawnee on Tuesday, February 12th, the second was in Overland Park on Saturday, February 16th. Currently no word from Police on whether any of the robberies may be connected.

Mark D. Vassershteyn, 64

Overland Park Police are asking for the public's assistance in locating a missing man with dementia.

Police say 64-year-old, Mark D. Vassershteyn was last seen around 8 p.m., in the area of W. 147th Terrace and Hardy Street. This intersection is between U.S. Highway 69 to the east and Antioch Road to the west.

Mr. Vassershteyn is a white male, approximately 5 feet 7 inches, 135-140lbs, with short grey hair and glasses. He is possibly wearing layered clothing. Police say he walks with a forward lean and only speaks Russian. He does not have access to a vehicle, and should be on foot in the area.

Lenexa man killed in rollover crash

Update:

Overland Park Police have identified the 20-year-old man killed in this morning's accident as John Stevens Hauk II of Lenexa, Kansas. Investigators say he was not wearing a seat belt and suffered fatal injuries in the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Friends tell Operation 100 News, Hauk was a 2010 graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School.

The Overland Park Police Department Traffic Safety Unit is investigating what caused a fatal accident this morning.

Police say they were called to northbound US 69 highway just north of Interstate 435 at 1:52 Tuesday morning.

Investigators say one car was involved and rolled after losing control on the ramp from westbound Interstate 435 to northbound US 69 highway. The driver is believed to have over corrected twice before the car rolled an undetermined number of times.

Overland Park Fire units reported the car had come to rest on its top and sustained heavy damage.

The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 20-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene. That man's identity will not been released until his family can be notified.

The northbound lanes of of US 69 were closed, at Interstate 435, as the accident is investigated. Those lanes were reopened around 4:00 a.m.. Police say the ramp from westbound Interstate 435 to northbound US 69 was reopened at 5:48 a.m..

Crossover on US-69 leads to head on fatality accident

The Kansas Highway Patrol has now identified the driver killed in this accident as 57-year-old, Scott E. Klein of San Clemente, California. Klein was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The other driver has been identified as 45-year-old, Marilyn S, Nickell of Drexel, Missouri. Nickell was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas where she is listed in stable condition.

Troopers say they are still investigating why Nickell's 1997 GMC Safari mini-van crossed the median and drove into oncoming traffic. A preliminary accident report shows that after crossing the center median, Nickell drove on the inside (left) lane of southbound US-69 while traveling northbound. Klein was traveling southbound in that same lane when the accident occurred. Nickell is believed to have driven into oncoming traffic for at least a mile and a half before prior to the accident. Investigators say that both drivers were wearing their seat belts and they continue to investigate whether or not Nickell was impaired by alcohol or a medical condition at the time of the crash.

The Louisburg Fire Department was dispatched at 5:34 a.m. after the Miami County Sheriff's Office received reports of a head on accident on US-69 Highway approximately two miles south of K-68 Highway, near Louisburg. Less than two minutes before the Fire Department was dispatched, Deputies were advised of a mini-van driving northbound in the southbound lanes of US-69 Highway. Highway Patrol Troopers say that a dispatcher was still on the phone with one of the people reporting the wrong-way vehicle when the head-on crash occurred.

Miami County Deputies arrived first at the scene of the accident and reported GMC mini-van on its side in the median with a female trapped inside. A second deputy reported that the other vehicle, a Ford Fusion, had one occupant inside. The male driver of the Ford was confirmed to be deceased by Miami County EMS personnel.

Louisburg Firefighters spent about 50 minutes extricating the female driver from the crashed mini-van. She was then transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, by a LifeFlight Eagle helicopter. Troopers say that she was alert and talking as she was loaded onto the helicopter and is cooperating in the investigation.

A source familiar with the incident tells Operation 100 News that the injured driver is an approximately 45-year-old female. Her injuries were said to serious but, not immediately life threatening, per the source.

The Kansas Highway Patrol and Miami County Sheriff's Office continue to investigate the accident and have not released any further details.

Police impersonator stops at least one vehicle in Miami County

UPDATE: As of 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the Miami County Sheriff's Office reports that the suspect and the vehicle have been located. The man turned himself in after word spread of the incident from media and Facebook, according to Authorities. Deputies say the male suspect is a Law Enforcement Officer from "out of town." He reportedly spotted a strange vehicle and made a traffic stop on that vehicle. The case has been forwarded to the Undersheriff who will decide the outcome of the case.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a person reported being pulled over by a man impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer around 4 a.m., south of Paola, Kansas.

The man was described as a white male with a thin face, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 150-180lbs and wearing oval glasses. He was dressed in a black water resistant jacket and blue jeans with holes in them. The victim also reports that the male was armed with an unknown type handgun.

The suspect vehicle is described as a black or dark colored Chevrolet 2-door, possibly a Cobalt. The vehicle is said to have red/blue "police style" lights on the sun visor and a dealership license plate on the front bumper.

The Kansas Highway Patrol has released its Thanksgiving Weekend Holiday activity. The activity reporting period began at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23rd and ran through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 27th.

Preliminary numbers indicate that it was a fairly safe weekend on Kansas roads, with the Patrol working no fatal crashes, according to a news release.

Over the holiday weekend, the Kansas Highway Patrol was participating in the Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), which began November 21, and ran until November 27. The Kansas Department of Transportation provided a grant for the additional enforcement.

Stepped up Holiday Enforcement

Law Enforcement throughout the Douglas and Johnson County area are participating in the Kansas Thanksgiving Traffic Enforcement Campaign. The campaign will begin Monday, November 21 and last through Sunday, November 27, 2011. A grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation will enable area law enforcement to have more officers present on area roadways to aggressively enforce Kansas traffic laws. Officers will be looking especially for impaired drivers and for children, teens, and adults who are not legally and properly secured with a seat belt or child safety restraint system.

According to KDOT, the Thanksgiving holiday weekend (Wednesday-Sunday) commonly outranks all other holidays in its number of alcohol related crashes. Those driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, endanger not only themselves, but also their passengers, other motorists, and pedestrians. Across Kansas, six persons - most of them innocent - are killed or injured in nine alcohol-related crashes each day. KDOT says compared with non-alcohol-related crashes, vehicle occupants in alcohol-related crashes are over two and a half times more likely to be injured or killed. Each week across Kansas over 300 drivers are arrested for driving under the influence. 

Failure to take the time to buckle up is also responsible for needless death and maiming. Those who do not buckle up are about 12 times more likely to be killed and almost twice as likely to suffer injury as those who do buckle up. Even worse is the fact that the injuries suffered by those who are unbuckled are likely to be much more severe or disabling than those suffered by an occupant who is properly restrained. According to KDOT, which tracks all crashes in the state, crashes are most likely to occur within a short distance from home.

Double Fatality accident in Overland Park

Overland Park Police closed the northbound lanes of US 69 Highway at 151st Street in Overland Park as they investigate a three vehicle accident that occurred at 6:10 a.m.. The accident occurred closer to 143rd Street. Police have confirmed that two people were pronounced deceased at the scene and four others, including two juveniles, were transported from the scene by Johnson County Med-Act Ambulances.

The highway reopened just after noon Monday morning.

Police say that three vehicles were involved in the accident, one did rollover. Northbound traffic is being forced to exit at 151st Street. Southbound traffic is restricted to one lane. Police say that the lane closures will remain in place indefinitely.

The female driver and a juvenile were killed in the accident according to Police. Overland Park Police have identified 29-year-old Heidi Lynn Adams as the driver of the SUV who was killed in the accident. Adams' daughter, 9-year-old, Imogin Grace Adams was also killed in the accident. Police say the 4-year-old and 7-year-old were also Adams' children.

The 4-year-old remains in critical condition and the 7-year-old remains in serious condition, according to the Overland Park Police Department. Updates were not available on the conditions of the two pickup truck drivers who were injured in the accident. Earlier reports from Johnson County Med-Act were that one of the adults was seriously injured and the other suffered minor injuries.

A LifeFlight Eagle Helicopter was initially dispatched to the crash scene. That helicopter was canceled prior to it's arrival. All four patients were transported by ground.

Initial reports indicated that the SUV went airborne and struck the top of a pickup truck. The airborne SUV was then struck by a second pickup truck and finally came to rest, upside down, in the ditch. Police would not confirm this report at last check.

A witness to the accident tells Operation 100 News, by phone, that the two children were both in the vehicle that came to rest overturned in the ditch. That same witness tells me, one of the children was cut out of the SUV by firefighters. This report was confirmed by a Police spokesperson.

Police: 1 in custody following fatal accident

The Overland Park Police Department announced Friday afternoon that one person is in custody in connection with the early Sunday morning accident that resulted in the death of 22-year-old, Overland Park man, Marquise Williams Jr..

The Johnson County District Attorney's Office has charged Jonathan Brooks with "failure to stop at an accident resulting in death." Brooks is a 27-years-old resident of Kansas City, Missouri. He is arraigned in Johnson County Court on Friday and his bond was set at  $250,000.

Police had been looking for the second vehicle involved in the accident, which was described as a silver Mitsubishi, possibly an Eclipse. The TIPS Hotline received a call on Wednesday afternoon telling Police where they could find that vehicle. Overland Park Police say that the vehicle was located in Kansas City, Missouri by Kansas City Police using the information obtained by the tipster.

Kansas City, Missouri Police arrested Brooks and he was extradited to Johnson County late on Friday. Police also say that the vehicle was secured and then towed to the Johnson County Crime Lab for further investigation.

Brooks posted the $250,000 bond after appearing for his court date on Monday. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 13th.

Updated Story: Police: 1 in custody following fatal accident

Overland Park Police tell Operation 100 News they are investigating a fatality accident this morning that occurred just before 2:30 a.m.. All southbound lanes of US-69 Highway are closed at 119th Street for the investigation. The highway reopened late Sunday morning.

Police confirm that they did receive reports of gunshots heard in the area around the time of the accident and that several casings were recovered on the highway. The Overland Park Police Department's Public Information Officer stated that the "two vehicles appear to have been traveling down the road bumping or possibly chasing each other."

The man who died at the crash scene has been identified as 22-year-old, Overland Park resident, Marquise Williams Jr.

Police also confirm that they are actively seeking a silver or gray Mitsubishi, possibly an Eclipse with front end damage. They were also able to confirm that the subject who was found deceased at the scene is a male. According to Police, his death appears to be the result of the car crash and not directly related to the gunfire. The driver of the car, also a male, was transported to an area hospital where he is in stable condition. No other information has been confirmed by Police at this time. Dispatchers received reports of gunshots fired just prior to one vehicle leaving the highway. Overland Park Police, Fire and Johnson County Med-Act units responded and found one vehicle had left the roadway, traveled down an embankment and crashed into a large high voltage power pole. Fire crews had to extricate one occupant from the vehicle. Upon completing the extrication it was determined that the patient, a passenger in the vehicle, was deceased.

The driver of the crashed vehicle was transported to an area hospital by Med-Act. During transport Med-Act discovered a gunshot would to their patient's foot, which was possibly self inflicted. The subject is in stable condition.

Overland Park Police have called out traffic units to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Officers investigating the scene have found several casings near the crash scene.

Preliminary reports indicate that two firearms have been located at the scene along with two casings on the highway. Reports also indicate that one subject has been taken into Police custody. Dispatcher's advised me that they are not able to confirm that information at this time as the investigation is on going.

Southbound US-69 Highway will be closed for an undetermined amount of time. All traffic is being forced to exit at 119th Street. KDOT has been contacted to bring out barricades to block the highway for an extended period of time.

Police believe this incident was related to a rolling disturbance or possible road rage incident. The suspect vehicle is reported to be a silver Mitsubishi Eclipse with front end and passengers side damage. That vehicle was last seen southbound on US-69. Driver is possibly armed with a handgun and should be considered dangerous.

Northbound left lane will be closed from 87th Street to I-35 for structure work on Monday/Friday, September 19-23 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Project work is scheduled to be completed on Friday, September 23.


Northbound US-69 to 95th Street ramp will close for reconstruction work beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 29. Project work is scheduled to be completed in late September 2011.
