KCK Firefighters recover body of 11-year-old who drowned in the river

UPDATE: Kansas City, Kansas Police say they were called to the Kansas River near the Turner Diagonal about 5:30 Monday evening after a boater reported a body.

In a news release, police say they fire department launched two boats onto the river just before 6 p.m. and recovered the body near the western bank of the river under the Turner Diagonal at 6:14 p.m.

Police have now identified the girl as Rebecca Van Sui Par, 11, of Kansas City, Kansas.

"The preliminary investigation indicates an accidental drowning, but will remain under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department's detectives unit pending autopsy results," the release said.

Kansas City, Kansas firefighters searched the Kansas River for about six hours after a child was reported missing while swimming with family on Saturday afternoon.

Police and firefighters were called to the river, just east of the Interstate 435 overpass about 3:30 p.m.

"Upon arrival, officers were informed that while a family was playing near a sand bar in the Kansas River a beach ball was stuck causing it to land in a portion of the river where the current was moving rapidly and undercurrent was present," Officer Dustin Dierenfeldt of the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department said in a news release.

Ofc. Dierenfeldt says an 11-year-old girl entered the river trying to retrieve the ball when she was sucked under the water surface.

"One adult and two juveniles entered the water to rescued the 11-year-old, but also required rescue," Ofc. Dierenfeldt said.

Shawnee Police assisted with contacting the family on the south side of the river.

Firefighters from the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department searched the river until 9 p.m. with four boats and the assistance of a helicopter from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department.

About 7 p.m., the Overland Park Police Department's dive team arrived at the Turner boat ramp and began their search of the river. The dive team is equipped with Sonar capabilities to better see under the water.

KCK Fire ended their search for the night at 9 p.m.,  At 10 p.m., Kansas City, Kansas Police said the girl had not been located and efforts had shifted from rescue to recovery.

Firefighters returned Sunday morning and searched the river from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. with three boats. As of 5 p.m., KCK Police say the girl has not been located.

KCK Police say the incident is under investigation by their Criminal Investigations Bureau. Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).

Man arrested after 120mph pursuit from Lawrence to KCK

One person was arrested early Sunday morning after a Lawrence police officer attempted to make a traffic stop in North Lawrence.

econd Street and North Street around 1:30 a.m. The driver of the car refused to stop and accelerated towards the turnpike.

Radio traffic indicates the pursuit went eastbound on Interstate 70 with speeds ranging from 75 to 120 miles per hour.

A Kansas Turnpike Authority Trooper was able to get stop sticks out in front of the suspect vehicle just before it reached Kansas Highway 7 in eastern Leavenworth County.

The Trooper told his dispatcher that he hit the driver’s side tires of the suspect vehicle with the stop sticks.

Radio traffic from the Lawrence officer who was chasing the vehicle stated that his patrol vehicle was also hit by the stop sticks and that speeds had decreased to only 75 miles per hour.

The suspect vehicle stopped about one mile east of the Kansas Highway 7 interchange in western Kansas City, Kansas about 1:45 a.m.

Troopers reported that the suspect driver was detained by Lawrence officers and no one else was inside the vehicle.

Radio traffic indicates the vehicle has expired registration and the suspect's driver's license is suspended. The vehicle was previously registered to the suspect.

A car chase which started in the Northland of Kansas City, Missouri came to an end in Shawnee early Tuesday.

Radio traffic indicates the suspect vehicle, a Toyota Prius, allegedly hit a Kansas City, Missouri patrol vehicle around 12:40 a.m.

Kansas City, Missouri Police Department Public Information Officer Darin Snapp says two officers went to conduct a "residence check" in the 7200 block of Northwest Donovan Drive at The Lakes Apartments, for a man known to have two felony drug warrants.

The warrants were issued by Platte County, Missouri and Wyandotte County, Kansas.

Officers observed a blue Toyota Prius, a vehicle officers knew to be associated with the suspect, pull into the parking lot.

Kansas City Police say the suspect gradually reversed towards the police vehicle.

"The Toyota struck the police vehicle while Officer Riffle was still inside of the car," KCPD's report says. "After [suspect] struck the police car, [suspect] continued to accelerate backwards, which cause the police vehicle to slide sideways."

The KCPD report says the suspect then accelerated through the parking lot and onto the Interstate, with police in pursuit.

The man driving the Prius continued his attempt to speed away from officers on southbound Interstate 435 from Missouri Highway 152. The driver accelerated to just over 100mph. The highest reported speed was 104mph.

The pursuit continued southbound on I-435 across the Missouri River into Kansas and continued south through Kansas City, Kansas.

An Edwardsville, Kansas officer was waiting for the vehicle near Woodend Road and was able to get stop sticks out in front of the car.

Pursuing officers reported that the stop sticks damaged the front driver's side tire of the Prius.

As the chase continued across the Kansas River and into Johnson County, a Kansas Turnpike Authority Trooper informed other units that he would be attempting to spin the Prius out with a PIT maneuver. Speeds had decreased to around 30mph after the Prius hit the stop sticks.

The Trooper's PIT maneuver was successful, and the Prius came to a stop under Johnson Drive at 1 a.m.

No injuries were reported by officers or suspects.

A man and a woman were taken into custody and are awaiting charges.

The man was taken into custody and transported to the Johnson County Adult Detention Center by the Kansas Turnpike Authority Trooper. The female passenger of the vehicle was taken into custody by Shawnee police.

Johnson County Sheriff's Office booking logs show the man is a 41-year-old resident of Kansas City, Missouri, in the Northland, not far from where the pursuit began. He's being held on a pending charge of felony reckless fleeing a law enforcement officer.

Kansas City, Missouri police were assisted in their pursuit by the Platte County, Missouri Sherriff's Office, Edwardsville Police, and Shawnee Police.

Two injured in Interstate 435 rollover

Two people were injured when the vehicle they were riding in crashed on Interstate 435 north near Johnson Drive on Monday afternoon.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says two Kansas City, Kansas residents were driving northbound on I-435 when the driver lost control on the slushy highway. The vehicle went into the median where it then overturned. The crash occurred around 1:15 p.m.

Troopers say the vehicle was a 2009 Dodge Caliber which was being driven by a 28-year-old man with a 26-year-old female as a passenger. Both were wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Johnson County Med-Act Public Information Officer Alyson Angell says they transported both people to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Both were listed in "stable condition."

Shawnee Police and fire also responded to the crash.

Thursday morning police chase ends with a crash

A police pursuit of two aggravated burglary suspects that began in Kansas City, Kan., ended in Shawnee early Thursday morning.

According to Kansas City, Kan., police, the chase began in the 4100 block of North 110th Street at about 2:45 a.m. after someone called police reporting that someone was trying to break into their house. Officers responded to the scene and the suspects were seen driving away.

Officers pursued the suspect's Buick Rendezvous onto Interstate 70, where speeds reached 110mph according to radio traffic. The suspect's then led officers to southbound Interstate 635, where a Kansas City, Kan. officer was able to get spike strips down in front of the vehicle, causing one of the front tires to go flat. The chase then exited at Metropolitan Avenue and travelled west to Holliday Drive, passing Lake Quivira. The pursuit continued into Shawnee and the driver lost control at Wilder Road where the road curves to cross several sets of railroad tracks.

Shawnee police said that the vehicle crashed under the railroad bridge and caught fire.

Firefighters from Shawnee and Kansas City, Kan. responded to the scene to extinguish the fire.

Radio traffic from officers reported that one suspect ran from the crash scene. A second suspect, who was injured in the crash, stayed at the scene and was quickly detained by officers. The injured suspect was transported by Johnson County Med-Act to the University of Kansas Hospital with serious injuries.

Shawnee police searched the wooded area, Mill Creek Streamway Park, and the northern edge of the Deffenbaugh Landfill with K-9 units for several hours Thursday morning. Officers called off their search around 7:30 a.m. with no sign of the suspect.

Shawnee police were not involved in the pursuit, Maj. Dan Tennis said. However, according to Amber Thomas-Hickerson with the Kansas City, Kan. police, Shawnee police and Kansas City, Mo., police were investigating the burglary as well in connection to other burglary cases in their cities.

Captain Tye Grant with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department confirmed to Operation 100 News that detectives from the department's property crimes unit were working with Kansas agencies on a burglary investigation.

Just after 9:30 a.m., radio traffic indicated that a man matching the description of the second suspect was seen near the scalehouse at the main entrance to the Deffenbaugh landfill. Reports indicated that the man was spotted by landfill security, who called police describing a black male dressed in dark clothing and only wearing one shoe. Shawnee officers arrived quickly and spotted the man running towards the river. Police arrested him near the entrance to Deffenbaugh landfill, according to scanner reports.

BNSF maintenance crews responded to the crash scene to check the structural integrity of the bridge before allowing rail traffic to resume. The bridge was reopened just after 5:30 a.m.

Officers from five agencies were involved in the initial search for the suspects after the crash. Those agencies included Shawnee Police, Lenexa Police, Kansas City, Kan. Police, Kansas City, Mo. Police, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Police.

Second wanted man arrested in Shawnee

Shawnee Police Captain Julie Andrews confirms to Operation 100 News that Anthony D. Yuschishin was arrested just after 2:15 Tuesday afternoon.

Officers spotted Yuschishin behind the wheel of at 2006 Dodge pickup truck on Shawnee Mission Parkway approaching Interstate 435.

Officers conducted a traffic stop after the truck entered northbound Interstate 435 and the truck came to a stop just north of Johnson Drive. Yuschishin and a woman were taken into custody without further incident.

Captain Andrews says Mr.Yuschishin is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Shawnee Police say Robert William Horton is in police custody. Police continue to be on the lookout for Anthony D. Yuschishin, see report and photo below.

Wyandotte County Jail logs show that Robert Horton was arrested on a Kansas City, Kansas bench warrant on Tuesday, June 24th. His current charges include aggravated assault and aggravated assault and battery of a law enforcement officer, felony possession of stolen property, and fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.

Original Report, June 20th:

Shawnee Police are asking for the public's assistance in locating Anthony D. Yuschishin, 34. He is wanted in connection with a string of stolen vehicles, burglaries and fleeing from police.

Yuschishin is a white male, 5 feet 11 inches tall and 165 pounds.

Police say a Shawnee detective located a stolen Ford Five Hundred in the driveway of a home in the 7000 block of Antioch Road in Overland Park on Wednesday, June 18 around 5:30 p.m.. The same vehicle evaded officers on Tuesday June 17, fleeing into Kansas City, Kansas.

A Shawnee police vehicle was struck by the vehicle as the driver again attempted to evade officers in the driveway of the Overland Park home on Antioch Road. The officer driving the vehicle was not injured.

Officers pursued the vehicle north on Antioch Road and eventually lost sight of it near Shawnee Drive and Interstate 635.

Police later located the vehicle abandoned near South 14th Street and Roe Lane in Kansas City, Kansas. Officers from the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department searched the area but were unable to locate any suspects.

Silver Alert canceled, missing KCK man found safe

Update:

Overland Park Police have canceled the Silver Alert for John E. Burris, 80, of Kansas City, Kansas.

Police say Mr. Burris was found in Doniphan County, Kansas, near the city of Highland around 6 p.m. Friday.

A news release says, "He was found uninjured and in good health. He was examined by paramedics as a precaution and family are now in route to pick him up."

His maroon or burgundy 1995 Ford Crown Victoria remains missing.

Highland, Kansas is approximately 90 miles from where Mr. Burris told his family that he was shopping for shoes.

Overland Park Police have issued a Silver Alert for John E. Burris of Kansas City, Kansas.

Police say Mr. Burris has Dementia and Alzheimer's. Thursday evening he told family that he was in Overland Park, somewhere alone 119th Street to purchase a new pair of shoes.

Family told police that he seemed confused and was lost trying to get back home.


Police say they believe he may have driven north on Kansas Highway 7 toward Atchinson or Leavenworth.

He is driving a maroon or burgundy 1995 Ford Crown Victoria with Kansas license plate 440BZH.

Mr. Burris is 6-foot 2-inches tall, 180 pounds, brown eyes, gray hair and a full beard. Police do not have a clothing description.

Driver of stolen vehicle leads police on 25-mile pursuit

Lawrence Journal-World report: Edwardsville man in custody after leading police on 25-mile pursuit.

A Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper attempted to stop a vehicle in north Lawrence early Sunday. The driver of that vehicle didn't stop and ended up leading police on a 25-mile pursuit through parts of three counties.

Around 12:20 a.m. a Trooper reported spotting a vehicle that had been reported stolen from an address in Lawrence, and attempted to stop the vehicle, near Interstate 70 and North Third Street. The driver sped up and the chase was on. A nearby Lawrence officer joined the pursuit as they turned eastbound on U.S. 24.

Speeds reached 70 miles per hour as they passed Lawrence Municipal Airport and then turned eastbound on Kansas Highway 32, crossing into Leavenworth County.

The Trooper reported speeds of 80 miles per hour as they approached Linwood city limits.

As the chase crossed into Wyandotte County and the city of Bonner Springs, officers with the Bonner Springs Police Department were able to hit three of the suspect vehicle's tires with spike strips.

Speeds dropped to the 55 miles per hour speed limit as the chase continued through the eastside of Bonner Springs, still on K-32.

The chase came to an end about a mile inside Edwardsville city limits, at mile marker 22, just before 12:50 a.m.. The Lawrence officer and the Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper were then able to take the driver into custody without further resistance.

Lawrence Police confirmed that the vehicle was stolen. The Trooper learned that the driver has a felony warrant for his arrest out of Leavenworth County and does not have a valid driver's license.

After about 10 minutes in custody, the suspect requested an ambulance, because he wasn't feeling well. An ambulance from the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department responded, but did not transport the man to the hospital. The Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper transported the man back to Lawrence and Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says no officer were injured and no police vehicles were damaged during the pursuit.

Shawnee Police Investigating Armed Robbery

Shawnee Police are investigating after a woman says she was robbed while walking to work this morning.

The incident was reported shortly after 5:45 Sunday morning in the parking lot of the Arbor Square apartments, located in the 7600 block of King Street. The apartments are just west of Nieman Road, on the south side of 75th Street.

The victim told police that she was walking through the parking lot when a black male approached her, displayed a black handgun and demanded her cell phone and cash. She complied with the suspect, who then fled the area in a vehicle. He was last seen driving eastbound on 75th Street from the apartment complex.

The suspect was described as a younger black male with a caramel complexion. He was last seen wearing a black jacket with a red shirt underneath, and a black stocking cap.

The getaway vehicle was described as a white, late 1990's or early 2000's model Jeep with the spare tire mounted on the back. A Dodge Stratus passenger car was also seen leaving the area at the same time. Police are not sure if this vehicle was involved in the incident.

Police continue to investigate and say the victim was not injured in the incident.

A similar robbery was reported earlier Sunday morning near the intersection of 75th Street and Wornall Road in Kansas City, Missouri.

Man seriously injured in KCK accident

Kansas City, Kansas Police are investigating after a vehicle struck a light pole, a guardrail and ended up partially down an embankment this morning.

The accident was first reported to Roeland Park Police just before 3:10 a.m., on County Line Road near Fontana Street. Officers arrived to find the vehicle down an embankment west of County Line Road and Suntree Plaza on the Kansas City, Kansas side of the border, towards Roe Lane.

At least four fire crews were dispatched to the scene, between Kansas City, Kansas Fire and Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 2.

Johnson County crews were first on the scene and reported the vehicle had sustained heavy damage and came to rest in an area surrounded by brush.

Crews stabilized the vehicle and worked for just under 10 minutes to extricate the driver.

Johnson County Med-Act reported the man's injuries to be serious. Kansas City, Kansas EMS transported him to an area hospital for treatment.

Law enforcement sources confirm to Operation 100 News that the vehicle was about 20 feet from the roadway and likely traveling around 40 miles per hour when the crash occurred.

Officers are investigating if weather or alcohol may have contributed to the accident.

Douglas County law enforcement was involved in a pursuit early Saturday morning.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Kirk Folks tells the Lawrence Journal-World that a vehicle was seen speeding in the area of Club Magic, 804 W. 24th Street, around 1:18 a.m.. Officers stopped the vehicle and attempted to speak with the driver who then sped off, striking the officer with a passenger side mirror.

Lawrence Police initiated the pursuit of the gray Mercury Grand Marquis in east Lawrence around 1:40 a.m.. Officers quickly lost sight of the car on eastbound Kansas Highway 10.

Eudora Police were waiting at the Church Street bridge over K-10 and picked up the pursuit as the vehicle passed.

That officer pursued the vehicle into Johnson County where he was joined by a Douglas County Deputy and Johnson County Deputies.

The Eudora officer reported "speeds are 100 plus," as the vehicle approached De Soto.

The chase continued eastbound on K-10 towards Lenexa, where officers were able to put out spike strips in front of the vehicle and then join the pursuit.

Officers from multiple agencies continued to chase the vehicle as K-10 merged with Interstate 435. The chase continued eastbound into Overland Park. Officers continued to lay out spike strips in front of the suspect car.

The spike strips had flattened both passenger's side tires as the vehicle approached Leawood.

Leawood officers were able to spike the driver's side of the vehicle.

The vehicle continued across the state line into Kansas City, Missouri where their officers joined the chase and Kansas agencies backed off.

Kansas City Police brought in their helicopter and pursued the vehicle northbound on U.S. 71 Highway and eventually to the area of E. 63rd Street and S. Benton Avenue, where the vehicle came to a stop. All three occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody without further incident.

During the pursuit at least one Douglas County deputy had to drop out of the chase after he struck spike strips with his patrol vehicle on K-10 in Johnson County. The patrol vehicle was towed back to Lawrence. Spike strips were also hit by at least one passing car and a tractor trailer, while on I-435.

No injuries were reported.

High speed pursuit starts in Wyandotte County, through Johnson County and into Missouri

Around 12:30 a.m., Troopers attempted to stop a speeding vehicle, sparking a nearly 40 mile pursuit.

The pursuit started in Wyandotte County near Interstate 435 and Interstate 70 when Kansas Turnpike Authority Troopers tried to stop a Ford Taurus that was seen in excess of 90 miles per hour on the interstate. Troopers pursued the vehicle southbound on Interstate 435 into Johnson County, through Shawnee and into Lenexa.

The suspect exited at 95th Street in Lenexa, wound through a business park and then back to I-435.

Speeds accelerated to nearly 100 miles per hour while northbound on I-435 and back into Shawnee, where the vehicle exited at Midland Drive and took off westbound. Troopers lost sight of the vehicle on Midland but, Shawnee officers spotted it westbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway. The vehicle then turned northbound on Monticello and then eastbound on Johnson Drive.

Shawnee police attempted to spike the vehicle's tires as it passed Barker Road, however the attempt was unsuccessful.

The vehicle continued back to Interstate 435 where it went southbound. The chase stayed on I-435 all the way to Kansas City, Missouri. At the state line, Kansas Troopers ended their pursuit and Kansas City, Missouri officers took over. Those officers reported that the vehicle exited at Holmes and then continued north to Bannister Road, where officers lost sight of it.

At last check, this vehicle has not been located.

The chase covered about around 40 miles in approximately 35 minutes. No law enforcement officers were injured and no patrol vehicles were damaged.

Another chase Saturday morning started in Lawrence, Kansas after an aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. That chase also went into Kansas City, Missouri where three people were taken into custody.

Car chase leads to arrest of Topeka carjacking & kidnapping suspects in Kansas City, KS

Law Enforcement officers from several agencies converged on Kansas City, Kansas this morning after a vehicle from an armed carjacking, in Topeka, was spotted on Interstate 70.

Kansas Turnpike Authority Troopers say they attempted to stop a vehicle on eastbound I-70 after it sped through a toll booth in Leavenworth County around 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Troopers also learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen after being taken in an armed carjacking late Sunday night in Topeka.

The driver of the vehicle failed to yield and led Troopers on a nearly 15 mile pursuit. The chase ended when the driver tried to exit to northbound Turner Diagonal (College Parkway). The suspect vehicle crashed off the side of the exit ramp. Troopers immediately reported that two people running south from the vehicle towards the BPU (Board of Public Utilities) building, located at 6742 Riverview Avenue.

As two troopers chased the suspects, Kansas City, Kansas officers arrived at the crash scene where two people, a man and a woman, were found in the trunk of the crashed vehicle. The two told officers that they had been forced into the trunk at gunpoint.

Kansas City, Kansas police and State Troopers surrounded the area for a police canine to conduct a search. Kansas City, Missouri Police brought in their helicopter to search from above.

About 45 minutes after the crash, the police helicopter spotted both suspects laying down in a wooded area between the Interstate and the BPU fence.

Authorities say both suspects were taken into custody, at 1:33 a.m., and held by KCK Police until detectives from Topeka arrived to take custody.

Topeka Police also sent a crime scene technician to assist with recovering evidence.

Authorities say the suspects will likely face a number of charges including kidnapping.

One of the suspects reported a minor injury and was evaluated by medics. The victims of the carjacking did not report any injuries.

No other details were immediately available.

Body found in Kansas river believed to be swimmer who disappeared early Sunday

A fisherman in Kansas City, Kansas reported finding a body in the Kansas river around 12:40 p.m. Monday.

The discovery was made near the Kansas Highway 32 bridge, just east of S. 59th Lane.

Kansas City, Kansas Police believe this is the man who disappeared in the river while swimming early Sunday morning in Edwardsville. (Original report below.) 

Police have not released the man's name, pending positive identification and family notification.

Firefighters from three area departments searched the Kansas river after a person reportedly fell in the water early Sunday.

A witness told firefighters that the man disappeared in the river near the jetty, which is just east of Interstate 435.

Kansas City, Kansas Fire dispatchers said they received the call shortly after 12:45 a.m. and dispatched Edwardsville Fire to begin a search of the area.

Edwardsville firefighters requested assistance from Kansas City, Kansas Fire with boats and Kansas City, Missouri Police with their helicopter. The Shawnee Fire Department was called to assist about 45 minutes later with additional boats.

Kansas City, Kansas Fire launched one airboat and had two bass boats that they were unable to launch due to shallow water. Shawnee Fire attempted to launch a shallow water boat from the Edwardsville boat ramp. They were also unsuccessful in their attempt to launch.

The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department helicopter was over the river, for about an hour, with a search light and heat sensing cameras.

The missing man is said to be 44-years old. He was last seen wearing dark colored shorts and no shirt. Firefighters say that he was fishing with a group when he fell in and did not resurface.

Firefighters walked along both banks and did not report finding anything. Kansas City, Kansas Fire also had a crew downstream watching the river for any signs of the missing person.

Leavenworth County offered to send boats to assist in the search.

Authorities believe the man was swimming when he disappeared in the water.

Crews called off the search around 2:30 a.m. Sunday due to unsafe water conditions. They returned later Sunday morning and continued searching off and on most of the day.

Aircraft hit with laser light over Johnson County

Authorities are investigating after an aircraft reported being hit with a laser light shortly after midnight Wednesday.

Master Police Officer Dan Friesen, of the Lenexa Police Department, tells Operation 100 News that they received a report of the incident from the Kansas City International airport control tower around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.


KCI officials told Lenexa Police that about 20 minutes earlier, an aircraft was shined with a green laser light over their city. Approximate coordinates led officers to the intersection of 79th Street and Quivira Road.

Officer Friesen says, "officers didn't find anything in the area."

Authorities say the laser light was spotted by the pilot of a "small beechcraft aircraft." That aircraft was headed towards the Johnson County Executive Airport, near 151st Street and Pflumm Road in Olathe.

LaserPointerSafety.com says the Federal Aviation Administration has received 2,282 reports of laser/aircraft incidents from January 1, 2013 through August 1, 2013. The August 2013 number of reported incidents is 22% higher than the same time period of 2012 and on pace for there to be 4,254 total laser/aircraft incidents in the 2013 calendar year.

It is a violation of Federal Law to aim laser pointers at aircraft or their flight path. Violators can be fined and face up to five years in prison. Source: 18 USC § 39A - Aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft.

Man struck by vehicle in Lawrence; Transported to Kansas City by helicopter

Lawrence Police are investigating this morning after a person was struck by a vehicle near the SouthPointe Apartments.

Fire Medical crews were dispatched to an address in the 2300 block of W. 26th Street on a car versus pedestrian injury accident around 1:30 Saturday morning.

Initial reports from the scene were that there were three people injured. Medics arrived at the scene to find only one person with injuries. That person was determined to have serious injuries.

Around 1:50 a.m., a LifeStar Helicopter was requested to respond to the south parking lot of Holcom Park. Incident command reported that the helicopter landed safely in the Holcom Park parking lot at 2:08 a.m.. At 2:20 a.m. LifeStar left the scene headed for the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

The vehicle that struck the pedestrian left the scene and was located a short distance away.

Sources tell Operation 100 News that the injured man is a 27-year-old and that he was involved in an argument while standing in the opening of a passenger's door. The driver of the vehicle began reversing and the open door knocked the man to the ground. He was not believed to have been struck by any part of the vehicle, other than the open door. The victim has reportedly been drinking.

There were reportedly several witnesses to the accident. No one else was injured.

Early morning accident injures two men | Patrol car struck, officer uninjured

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after a three vehicle accident left two people injured this morning in Bonner Springs.

Troopers say accident occurred at 2:40 a.m. in the intersection of southbound Kansas Highway 7 and Kansas Avenue, just over half of a mile south of Interstate 70.

Investigators say a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu was southbound on K-7, ran a red light and struck a 1996 Ford Econoline van, that was eastbound on Kansas Avenue, nearly head on.


The force of the collision ejected the driver of the van onto the highway and knocked the van back and into the front bumper of a Bonner Springs Police patrol vehicle, a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria, that was traveling behind the van.

Bonner Springs Fire and EMS reported the ejected driver of the van to be in critical condition at the scene and the driver of the car to be seriously injured. The police officer did not report any injuries.

Troopers have identified the driver of the Chevrolet Malibu as, 41-year-old, Erin Jantz of Olathe, Kansas. The driver of the Ford Econoline is, 50-year-old, Monto Cauthron of Kansas City, Kansas. The Bonner Springs Police officer is, 24-year-old, John Marino of Lawrence, Kansas.

The Highway Patrol's accident report says that Mr. Jantz and Officer Marino were both wearing seatbelts when the accident occurred. Mr. Cauthron was not wearing a seatbelt.

Troopers continue to investigate if alcohol may have played a role in the accident's cause.

An additional EMS unit from the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department assisted on the call and transported one of the injured men.

Shawnee Police are investigating after a, 12-year-old, Kansas City, Kansas boy was struck by a vehicle this morning. The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m..

Police say the boy was riding a bicycle southbound on Halsey Street and was attempting to cross 51st Street when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle.

The driver who struck the boy, stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

The boy was seriously injured. His injuries are not life-threatening. He was transported to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri by Johnson County Med-Act.

The Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety unit continues to investigate.
