Stretch of Shawnee Mission Parkway to close briefly Thursday morning

The City of Shawnee says the intersection of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Long Avenue will be closed for a short time Thursday morning.
The closure is expected to begin at 11:00 a.m. and will remain in place for approximately 15 minutes as KCP&L crews run an overhead line across the intersection.

Due to this work, the city says southbound Long Avenue will be closed starting at 9 a.m.

There will not be a marked detour. Drivers are being asked to use alternate routes to get around the closing.

Shawnee Transportation Manager Kevin Manning is encouraging drivers to use Pflumm Road or Quivira Road to access Johnson Drive or 67th Street as alternate routes.

Road closure barricades will be in place between 50ft and 300ft from the closed intersection. The Shawnee Police Department along with Shawnee Public Works will be helping to slow and block traffic.

Cooking fire displaces Shawnee family

Firefighters from Shawnee, Overland Park, and Lenexa were called to a house fire just after 8:30 Monday morning in Shawnee.

Arriving firefighters reported fire showing from the second level screened-in deck of the home at 7307 Earnshaw Street.

Shawnee Fire Marshal Corey Sands says the fire was "moving rapidly" towards the interior of the home.

"The family members were able to escape the house fire without injury and Shawnee fire crews put a quick stop to the fire," Sands said.

Fire investigators determined the resident had been cooking on the screened-in deck with a propane fed burner. The resident went back inside the home to prepare more food, then smelled smoke and found the fire on the deck.

"The leading cause of fires in Shawnee and across the nation is unattended cooking," Sands said. "It is always important to stay in the area you are cooking in."

Firefighters make sure the fire on the back screened-in deck is out.

Damage to the home is estimated at $150,000. The displaced residents are staying with family for the time being.

Two women injured, man arrested after trying to elude police

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez says an officer attempted to stop a car near 95th Street and Quivira Road because the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

"The car fled into the Oak Park Mall parking lot, where two adult passengers jumped from the moving car, one of which was partially dragged by the car," Chavez said.

Recorded radio traffic indicates the officer stopped to check on the women who jumped out of the fleeing car and temporarily lost sight of the suspect vehicle.

The car was found in the parking lot near the Macy's Furniture and Mattress Gallery, 11201 West 95th Street, but the driver was no longer with the car.

Officers began saturating the area and prepared to search with police dogs. Witnesses at the nearby Houlihan's, 11851 West 95th Street, pointed out the suspects hiding spot just outside the building. The suspect was arrested just outside the Houlihan's building.

Johnson County Med-Act and the Overland Park Fire Department responded to check on both of the women who jumped from the moving car. Officer Chavez says both were treated for minor injuries.

The suspect, only identified as a 33-year-old Olathe man, has yet to be formally charged. Court records show pending charges of felony aggravated battery, felony fleeing a law enforcement officer-reckless, felony obstruction of the legal process, and misdemeanor driving while suspended. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.

The same suspect has an extensive criminal record in Johnson County with previous cases dating back to 2003 with charges including domestic violence, theft, and felony possession of methamphetamine.

OP police seeking information on suspect vehicle from Oak Park Mall shots fired

Overland Park police say they no longer need to identify the two persons of interest from Wednesday's shots fired incident outside Oak Park Mall.

Police are asking for information about a possible suspect vehicle, only described as a "dark SUV crossover."

Captain Brian Houlahan of the Overland Park Police Department says officers responded to the mall, 11121 West 95th Street, about 8:30 p.m. after receiving a report of possible gunshots inside the building.

"Multiple police departments from Johnson County, Kansas responded to the area to assist," Capt. Houlahan said. "Officers found no evidence of any shooting or injured individuals inside the mall."

Officers from Lenexa, Shawnee, Olathe, Leawood, and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office were among those who responded to assist with the call.

While investigating officers learned that an unoccupied vehicle in the northeast parking lot of the mall had been hit multiple times by gunfire. The northeast parking lot is near the food court.

"There have been no individuals coming forward to advise they were injured as a result of this shooting," Capt. Houlahan said.

Shortly before midnight, Overland Park Police Department Public Information Officer John Lacy advised that officers had cleared the area of the incident.

Shawnee Fire Department debuts new fire truck to public

A custom built 2018 Pierce Velocity recently ran its first calls as Engine 71 out of the John B. Glaser Fire Station.

After months of planning, designing and anticipation, the Shawnee Fire Department is debuting its newest addition to the fleet. The custom built 2018 Pierce Velocity ran its first calls as Engine 71 out of the John B. Glaser Fire Station this week.

The  John B. Glaser Fire Station, also known as Station 71, is one of the busiest fire stations in the state of Kansas and home to the second busiest Johnson County Med-Act ambulance in the county.

At the direction of Fire Chief John Mattox, the department’s apparatus committee designed the new engine to be the first to display an updated gray over red color scheme.

Shawnee Fire Marshal Corey Sands and Firefighter Duffy Muehlberger gave Operation 100 News a sneak peek of the new engine last week.

The Shawnee Fire Department's brand new 2018 Pierce Velocity is running its first calls as Engine 71 this week.

The color scheme is a subtle nod to the history of the Shawnee Fire Department, Sands said.

The burgundy of the new engine resembles the burgundy of the 1930 REO Speed Wagon.

From a small compartment behind the driver’s door for that firefighter to store their equipment to leather seats embroidered with the department’s logo,  the engine was built from the ground up with functionality and cleanliness in mind. The leather seats, which can easily be wiped down when dirty, are an example of another proactive step the department has taken to help firefighters keep their equipment and living quarters free of cancer-causing contaminants.

The new Engine 71 features full LED lighting for increased visibility.

The five-year-old fire engine that previously served as Engine 71 will be reassigned to Fire Station 74 where it will become Engine 74 when the new station opens in January.

Employee robbed in Taco Bell parking lot

Shawnee Police are investigating after a Taco Bell employee was robbed in the parking lot Thursday morning.

Police say the robbery occurred at approximately 10:14 a.m. at the Taco Bell in the 10 Quivira Plaza shopping center. The Taco Bell is located at 12014 Shawnee Mission Parkway, just west of Quivira Road.

Operation 100 News was on scene shortly after the robbery and confirmed with a Shawnee Police Sergeant that the robbery occurred outside of the business and no one had been injured.

Police set up a perimeter in the area and called in an off-duty K-9 officer to conduct a search of the area. The search did not locate the suspect.

In a statement released just before 5 p.m. Thursday, police say the victim told them, "he was approached by the suspect who demanded the money he was carrying."

Operation 100 News has learned that the employee was carrying an unlocked bank bag when the suspect approached the victim and implied that he had a weapon.

Police say the suspect is a black male in his late 20's, approximately 5ft 11in to 6ft 2in tall, and 170-190lbs. He had short hair and a full stubble type beard. The suspect was wearing black jeans and a burgundy polo shirt with horizontal stripes. He was last seen in a burgundy, late 1990's or early 2000's model, Ford Taurus with a damaged front corner and broken headlight.

Six vehicle accident forces closure of I-435 in JoCo

Overland Park Police and Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers are investigating after five passenger vehicles and a tractor trailer were involved in an accident early Monday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the eastbound lanes of Interstate 435 east of Quivira Road around 12:30 p.m. Monday on a reported rollover injury accident.

Overland Park Fire spokesperson Jason Rhodes tells Operation 100 News that four people were injured.

All of the injured were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.

Police closed all westbound lanes of I-435 and diverted traffic to US-69. All lanes reopened around 2:30 p.m..

OP man killed in early morning motorcycle crash

Overland Park Police are investigating the city's first fatal traffic accident of 2014.

Police were called to an address in the 15300 block of Quivira Road around 3 a.m. Tuesday on reports of a motorcycle crashed into a retaining wall.

No one is believed to have witnessed the accident. A resident in the area found a motorcycle crashed in a driveway and the rider lying in the grass on the other side of a retaining wall.

Johnson County Med-Act arrived on scene a short time later and pronounced the man dead.

Overland Park Police have identified the rider as R. "Brock" Rodgers, 24, of Overland Park. Police say he was wearing a helmet.

Officer Gary Mason tells Operation 100 that the motorcycle is a Triumph Speed Triple.

The Overland Park Police Traffic Safety Unit believes the speed was a factor in the crash and they continue to investigate exactly what happened.

Man fleeing from U.S. Marshals collides with building in Shawnee

A man attempting to elude capture was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in Shawnee on Wednesday when his vehicle collided with a support pillar of a business and then plowed into a snowbank.

The incident happened around 1:15 p.m. in the parking lot of the Burlington Coat Factory, 6451 Quivira Road.

The man spotted the approaching vehicles and attempted to flee in his vehicle.

During his attempted escape he crashed his car into a support pillar outside of Rick's Barber Shop and then into a snowbank, where his vehicle became stuck. The man, later identified as Dillon J. Taylor, 22 of Kansas City, Kansas, was arrested without further incident.

A passenger inside the car was detained and later released at the scene.Shawnee Police were called to the scene to make a report regarding the non-injury accident involving the building.

The U.S. Marshals Service said Taylor was wanted on a Kansas Department of Corrections warrant.

Booking records confirm, 22-year-old, Dillon James Taylor was booked for a Kansas Department of Corrections parole violation. 

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Taylor was convicted on domestic battery with intentional bodily harm charges in 2011 and drug related charges in 2012. He served 11-months before being paroled. Records show that he failed to comply with the terms of his parole in early January 2014. 

No one was injured in the accident or during the apprehension.

At the request of the of a U.S. Marshal at the scene, some faces have been blurred to conceal identities.

Shawnee QuikTrip held up by armed man

Shawnee Police are investigating an early morning robbery at a local convenience store.

Officers were called to the QuikTrip, 11915 Johnson Drive, at 1:12 a.m.. The store is located on the southwest corner of Johnson Drive and Quivira Road. The clerk reported that an unknown man had robbed the store and then fled on foot.



The suspect is described as a white male around 50-years old, with short gray hair. He was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and boots.

Police say the man entered the store and asked the clerk for a pack of cigarettes. As the cigarettes and suspect's cash were exchanged, the suspect displayed a "rusty, silver revolver" and demanded cash from the drawer. The clerk handed over the cash, estimated to only be about $20, and was not harmed in the incident.

The suspect was last seen walking west and then south from the store.

Lenexa Police brought in a K-9 unit and conducted an area search. No one was located during the search.

Police continue to investigate.

Lenexa Police and the FBI are investigating a bank robbery this afternoon.

The robbery was reported around 1 p.m. Thursday at the Bank of America, located at 7747 Quivira Road.

Police say a black male in his mid to late 20's approached an employee while displaying a handgun. The man demanded money and as shown in the photo, he climbed onto the counter at one point.

The suspect was wearing a nylon stocking over his head, long sleeve green shirt and khaki pants. He was carrying a black bag and possibly put on a black jacket after leaving the building. He was last seen running west from the building.

There were reports that a man matching the suspect's description was seen getting into a vehicle in a nearby parking lot. Witnesses described that vehicle as a mid 90's Lincoln Towncar, tan or gold in color, possibly with Missouri license plates.

The Kansas Highway Patrol brought in their helicopter to search from above, while officers and detectives from both Lenexa and Shawnee swarmed the area. Those officers set up a large perimeter and a Lenexa K-9 performed searched the area but did not locate the suspect.

Police checked on several vehicles in area apartment complexes which were close to the description provided by witnesses.
Lenexa Police say no injuries were reported and no arrests have been made.

Standoff ends peacefully after more than nine hours

Overland Park Police surrounded a home in the 11400 block of 142nd Terrace, in the area of 143rd Street and Quivira Road, following a disturbance call around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers called for the department's SWAT team and negotiators to respond around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say they were in contact with the man throughout the ordeal.

The man was said to be armed, since the situation ended peacefully, around 9:30 a.m., officers have not said whether or not any firearms were found.

Tactical Medics from Johnson County Med-Act were on the scene and an ambulance unit was staged nearby.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is also assisted with the situation's early stages.

No injuries were reported.

Aircraft hit with laser light over Johnson County

Authorities are investigating after an aircraft reported being hit with a laser light shortly after midnight Wednesday.

Master Police Officer Dan Friesen, of the Lenexa Police Department, tells Operation 100 News that they received a report of the incident from the Kansas City International airport control tower around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.


KCI officials told Lenexa Police that about 20 minutes earlier, an aircraft was shined with a green laser light over their city. Approximate coordinates led officers to the intersection of 79th Street and Quivira Road.

Officer Friesen says, "officers didn't find anything in the area."

Authorities say the laser light was spotted by the pilot of a "small beechcraft aircraft." That aircraft was headed towards the Johnson County Executive Airport, near 151st Street and Pflumm Road in Olathe.

LaserPointerSafety.com says the Federal Aviation Administration has received 2,282 reports of laser/aircraft incidents from January 1, 2013 through August 1, 2013. The August 2013 number of reported incidents is 22% higher than the same time period of 2012 and on pace for there to be 4,254 total laser/aircraft incidents in the 2013 calendar year.

It is a violation of Federal Law to aim laser pointers at aircraft or their flight path. Violators can be fined and face up to five years in prison. Source: 18 USC § 39A - Aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft.

VIDEO: Fire engine involved in traffic accident

The Overland Park Police Department is investigating after a fire apparatus was involved in an accident this morning.

The Overland Park Fire Department says the accident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Friday, when one of their fire engines was struck from behind by a mini-van. It happened on the westbound Interstate 435 ramp to Quivira Road. Damage to the mini-van and fire engine is described as moderate. No injuries were reported in the accident.

At the time of the accident, the fire engine was responding to a reported accident in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 435 between Quivira and U.S. 69 Highway. A second fire apparatus was sent on the initial accident call, where one non life-threatening injury was reported.

Both accidents remain under investigation.

Operation 100 News was the only media reporting on both accidents as they unfolded. As of this report, no other media has made any public mention of either accident.

Second man arrested and charged in 2010 murder of Shawnee business owner

Johnson County authorities have located and arrested the second man wanted in connection with the 2010 murder of Shawnee liquor store owner Gerry Grovenburg.

Sheriff's Office booking logs show that Bruce Ashley Jr., 30, was arrested in Jackson County, Missouri and transferred to the custody of the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office. He was booked into the Johnson County Adult Detention Center in Olathe on Friday, May 31st. Ashley is charged with first-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery.

Larry Marshall Jr., 33, was arrested in Blytheville, Arkansas on Friday, May 17th and transferred to Johnson County authorities on Friday, May 24th. Marshall is also charged with first-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery.

The arrests come just over three years after a customer found Gerry Grovenburg shot to death on the floor of his business, Mr. G's Liquor Store, located a 7635 Quivira Road in Shawnee. The murder occurred around 10:30 p.m. on May 12, 2010. Grovenburg was 61-years old and had planned to retire in 2011.

Both men are being held on separate $1 million bonds at the New Century Adult Detention Center near Gardner and are scheduled to appear in Johnson County District Court on Thursday, June 6th at 9:30 a.m..

Bruce Julius Ashley Jr., 31, has been sentenced to life plus 43 months. The life sentence comes nearly four and a half years after the murder of Shawnee liquor store owner Gerry Grovenburg in May 2010.

Ashley was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery on August 15, 2014, after his cousin, Larry Marshall, testified against him.
Both Ashley and Marshall eluded arrest for more than three years after the murder. Marshall testified that he was the getaway driver.

In exchange for his testimony, murder charges were dropped against Marshall, and he plead guilty to lesser charges of aggravated robbery and aiding a person charged with a felony. He was sentenced to nearly six years in prison.

August 15, 2014 Update:

On May 12, 2010, a customer found 61-year-old Gerry Grovenburg shot to death behind the counter of the liquor store he and his wife had owned for 35 years.

Three years later, two men were arrested and charged in the murder. Today, both men remain in the custody of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

Bruce Julius Ashley Jr., now 31, is on trial for first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. He entered a plea of not guilty on September 24, 2013.

Larry Marshall, now 34, is scheduled to change his not guilty plea to a guilty, as part of a plea agreement to testify against Bruce Ashley.

June 5, 2013 Update:

Second man arrested and charged in 2010 murder of Shawnee business owner

New information: May 28, 2013

Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe is asking for the public's assistance in locating a second man allegedly involved in the murder of Shawnee liquor store owner Gerry Grovenburg.

Authorities say Bruce Julius Ashley Jr. and Larry Marshall are suspects in the May 2010 death of Mr. G's Liquor Store owner and Spring Hill resident Gerry Grovenburg. The murder allegedly occurred when their attempt to rob the store didn't go as planned.

Larry Marshall was arrested in Arkansas on May 17th and is now in the custody of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office; full report below.

Officials say 30-year-old Bruce Julius Ashley Jr. remains at large. His last known location was in the Kansas City area, and he is believed to still be in this area.

A news release from the Johnson County District Attorney's office says, "Mr. Ashley is a fugitive from justice." The release says that Mr. Ashley should be considered armed and dangerous. District Attorney Steve Howe also said that anyone found to be helping Mr. Ashley will be charged with a felony.

A source familiar with the investigation tells Operation 100 News that an arrest has been made in the 2010 murder of Shawnee liquor store owner Gerry Grovenburg. Gerry and his wife, Mary Ellen Grovenburg, owned Mr. G's Liquor Store, located at 7635 Quivira Road.

Johnson County Booking Records show that 33-year-old Larry Marshall of Blytheville, Arkansas was transferred to the custody of Johnson County authorities on Friday, May 24th. Marshall has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated robbery. He is being held at the Johnson County Adult Detention Center in Olathe on a $1 million bond.



Marshall was arrested at home in Arkansas on Friday, May 17th, and later transferred to Johnson County.

The arrest comes just over three years after a customer found Gerry Grovenburg shot to death on the floor of his business.

Court records show that the case was filed by Shawnee Police on Monday, May 13, 2013. A Johnson County Judge issued an arrest warrant for Marshall and ordered the case sealed until the suspect was in Sheriff's Office custody.


Johnson County court records of the case were unsealed when Marshall made his first court appearance on May 28th.

The murder occurred sometime before 10:30 p.m. on May 12, 2010. Grovenburg was 61 years old and had planned to retire in 2011.

On July 13, 2010, Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies arrested Larry Marshall for battery on a law enforcement officer. He was eventually sentenced to and served 10 months in jail. It is unclear if Marshall was considered a person of interest during that time.

The Kansas City Metro Squad handled the early stages of the investigation. The case was handed back to Shawnee Police after the Metro Squad detectives interviewed several persons of interest in 2010.

At that time, detectives said the suspect did not take any alcohol, merchandise or money from the business. Before disbanding, the Metro Squad released the sketch seen below. Investigators have not released a possible motive.

Sources tell Operation 100 News that the suspect is believed to have moved out of state following the murder.

VIDEO: Lenexa computer store burglarized

Lenexa Police are investigating after an area computer store was burglarized.

Police say the incident occurred around 3:53 a.m. at the Computer & Laptop Service Center, located at 7791 Quivira Road.

Surveillance video shows three individuals breaking through a front window and then entering the business. The subjects take as many laptops as they can carry and were only inside the store for about 30 seconds. They fled the scene in an unknown type vehicle.

Child found safe after walking away from JoCo elementary school

Shawnee Police confirm the child has been located safely at his home in Kansas City, Kansas.

Shawnee Police say they were called to Bluejacket Flint Elementary school, 11615 W. 49th Terrace, around nine this morning in reference to a missing child. The child reportedly walked away from the school.

The school is located on W. 49th Terrace between Quivira and Nieman roads.

Police say the child is an 11-year-old, white male, approximately five feet tall and weighing approximately 100lbs, with blond hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black The NorthFace jacket and carrying an orange and gray backpack with matching orange and gray Nike tennis shoes.

The child is believed to live in southern Kansas City, Kansas and may be walking home.

Fourth JoCo convenience store robbed in eight days

Shawnee Police are investigating the armed robbery of another area convenience store, the fourth such robbery in eight day's time. Links to earlier stories can be found below.

Officers were dispatched to the QuikTrip, 11915 Johnson Drive, at 2:36 a.m. Tuesday. The store is located on the southwest corner of Johnson Drive and Quivira Road.

Police say a male suspect entered the store and displayed a handgun. The suspect ordered the clerk to give him the money out of the cash register, the clerk complied and the suspect left in an unknown direction.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6'2" tall and 200 lbs. He was last seen wearing dark pants, a dark hooded sweatshirt, ski mask or bandanna and sunglasses.

Officers searched the area with a K-9 but, were unable to locate a suspect.

No injuries were reported.

This morning's robbery is the fourth armed robbery of a Johnson County convenience store in the last eight days. The first was reported February 12th in Shawnee [link]. The next two both occurred in Overland Park on February 16th [link] and 17th [link]. Shawnee Police say they continue to investigate the possibility that this robbery is related to other robberies that have occurred recently in the Johnson County area.

Missing child FOUND following extensive search

Lenexa Police have confirmed that the boy and his dog were found safe in a nearby apartment just before 8 a.m. Police say the boy left his mother's apartment sometime before midnight and walked to family friend's apartment down several doors in the same building. The resident at that apartment attempted to contact the child's mother but, was unable to make contact with her at that time.

The family friend, the boy and his dog spent the morning in the apartment down the hall. Police began knocking on doors in the building around 5 a.m., at that time the friend says she did not hear Police at the door. When officers went door-to-door a second time before 8 a.m., the friend answered and learned that there was a frantic search in progress for the boy.

Police confirmed that the boy was safe and was not in need of any medical care before returning him to his mother.

Lenexa Police are searching for a missing boy this morning after he disappeared from his home in the Oak Park Village apartments sometime overnight. The child was reported missing around 4:45 a.m., according to Police.

Police confirm the child is a three and a half year old white male. He is believed to be wearing a one piece pajama from the Disney movie 'Cars' and is not believed to have a coat. The family dog, described as a tan and white Yorkshire Terrier and Schnauzer mix, is also missing from the apartment. Lenexa Police say the boy has let himself out of the apartment in the past.

The boy was last seen at his home, an apartment in the complex southwest of the intersection of 95th Street and Quivira Road. The actual address is in the 9500 block of Monrovia.

While also unconfirmed, it is believed the boy has not been seen since around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Lenexa firefighters are using thermal imaging cameras to assist in the search. Officers from the cities of Overland Park, Olathe, Merriam and the Kansas Highway Patrol are also assisting with the search.

Officers at the scene have also requested the Kansas Highway Patrol's helicopter to respond from Topeka as soon as it is available at daybreak this morning. A command post is being established in a nearby shopping center parking lot.
