Shawnee woman arrested after allegedly trying to stab male acquaintance

Lenexa Police arrested a 38-year-old Shawnee woman after she allegedly tried to stab a man Saturday night.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez of the Lenexa Police Department says officers were called to the victim's apartment about 10:15 p.m.

"An adult female attempted to stab an adult male acquaintance at an apartment in the 9500 block of Monrovia," Ofc. Chavez said. "The female left prior to our arrival, but was located a short time later by Shawnee officers in their city."

Major Jason Brunner of the Shawnee Police Department did not answer any questions about Shawnee's involvement in the incident, saying that officers assisted Lenexa and all inquiries should be directed to them.

Recorded radio traffic indicates Shawnee police called in at K-9 unit from off-duty after officers from both agencies surrounded the suspect's home in the 11100 block of West 77th Street in Shawnee.

Shortly after midnight, Shawnee's K-9 located the female suspect in the backyard of the home.




She was taken into police custody and then transported to an area hospital by Johnson County Med-Act for treatment of a minor injury.

Johnson County court records show the suspect, Patricia Hernandez, has been charged with felony aggravated assault, felony obstruction of legal process, and misdemeanor violation of a protection order. She's being held on a $2,500 bond, her next court appearance is scheduled for April 9.

One killed, another injured in late-evening crash on Metcalf

One man is dead and another is recovering at an area hospital after a three-vehicle crash near 77th Street and Metcalf Avenue on Tuesday evening.

Overland Park Police say the crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. in the 7700 block of Metcalf Avenue.

In an initial email to the media, Overland Park Police Captain Tom Fredrickson says one person was killed and another was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries.

A later news release from Overland Park Police Department Traffic Safety Unit Sergeant Keith Hruska says the motorcyclist died at the scene and none of the other drivers suffered serious injuries.

At the scene, an SUV with significant front end damage came to rest facing south in the northbound lanes and a sportbike came to rest near a utility pole off the east side of the road.

Johnson County Med-Act ambulance transported the elderly male driver of the SUV to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

All lanes of Metcalf Avenue were closed between 75th Street and 79th Street as the crash was investigated. Metcalf was reopened about 1:45 Wednesday morning.

The Overland Park Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is handling the crash investigation. At least one Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper was on scene assisting with traffic control.

"At this time, the investigation is in the preliminary phase and the cause of the crash is still being determined," Sgt. Hruska said in the release.

The name of the motorcyclist has not been released.

Lenexa Police and the FBI are investigating a bank robbery this afternoon.

The robbery was reported around 1 p.m. Thursday at the Bank of America, located at 7747 Quivira Road.

Police say a black male in his mid to late 20's approached an employee while displaying a handgun. The man demanded money and as shown in the photo, he climbed onto the counter at one point.

The suspect was wearing a nylon stocking over his head, long sleeve green shirt and khaki pants. He was carrying a black bag and possibly put on a black jacket after leaving the building. He was last seen running west from the building.

There were reports that a man matching the suspect's description was seen getting into a vehicle in a nearby parking lot. Witnesses described that vehicle as a mid 90's Lincoln Towncar, tan or gold in color, possibly with Missouri license plates.

The Kansas Highway Patrol brought in their helicopter to search from above, while officers and detectives from both Lenexa and Shawnee swarmed the area. Those officers set up a large perimeter and a Lenexa K-9 performed searched the area but did not locate the suspect.

Police checked on several vehicles in area apartment complexes which were close to the description provided by witnesses.
Lenexa Police say no injuries were reported and no arrests have been made.
