One killed, another injured in late-evening crash on Metcalf

One man is dead and another is recovering at an area hospital after a three-vehicle crash near 77th Street and Metcalf Avenue on Tuesday evening.

Overland Park Police say the crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. in the 7700 block of Metcalf Avenue.

In an initial email to the media, Overland Park Police Captain Tom Fredrickson says one person was killed and another was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries.

A later news release from Overland Park Police Department Traffic Safety Unit Sergeant Keith Hruska says the motorcyclist died at the scene and none of the other drivers suffered serious injuries.

At the scene, an SUV with significant front end damage came to rest facing south in the northbound lanes and a sportbike came to rest near a utility pole off the east side of the road.

Johnson County Med-Act ambulance transported the elderly male driver of the SUV to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

All lanes of Metcalf Avenue were closed between 75th Street and 79th Street as the crash was investigated. Metcalf was reopened about 1:45 Wednesday morning.

The Overland Park Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is handling the crash investigation. At least one Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper was on scene assisting with traffic control.

"At this time, the investigation is in the preliminary phase and the cause of the crash is still being determined," Sgt. Hruska said in the release.

The name of the motorcyclist has not been released.

Wrong-way driver causes crash south of Lawrence

The Kansas Highway Patrol says a wrong-way driver caused a head-on crash south of Lawrence on New Year's Day.

Troopers say the crash occurred just after 6 p.m. in the southbound lanes of U.S. 59 Highway at North 1200 Road, or about three-quarters of a mile south of Kansas Highway 10.

The Highway Patrol's preliminary crash report says a 54-year-old Eudora man was driving a 2015 Jeep Wrangler northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway. A 74-year-old Ottawa woman was driving southbound in a 2012 Toyota Camry with her six-year-old grandson as a passenger.

The wrong-way Jeep crashed head-on with the Toyota at the intersection of U.S. 59 and North 1200 Road.

Troopers say the crash caused the Toyota to spin and come to rest in the middle of the intersection, while the wrong-way Jeep stopped on North 1200 Road.

Both drivers were transported to hospitals by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical ambulances. The man driving the Jeep was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital to be checked out. The woman driving the Toyota, along with her grandson, were transported to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center with what Troopers describe as a "suspected minor injury." The six-year-old boy was not injured but was transported with his grandmother until his parents could arrive to be with him.

All three people involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts.

Troopers arrested the driver of the Jeep for suspicion of DUI, transporting an open container of alcohol, and aggravated battery causing bodily harm while DUI. Formal charges have not been filed.

Operation 100 News does not release the names of individuals involved in crashes unless they are charged with a crime. As of this report, no formal charges have been filed.

Two injured in reported head-on crash in Merriam

Police continue to investigate after two people were injured in a crash on a busy Johnson County road on Tuesday afternoon.

Merriam Police say the crash happened just after 2 p.m. in the westbound lanes of 75th Street on the bridge over Interstate 35.

Overland Park Fire Department firefighters arrived to find one of the heavily damaged vehicles on fire and both drivers outside of the cars.

Johnson County Med-Act transported two men to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Police say their injuries are non-life threatening. One of the men is in his late teens, and the other is in his late-20s.

Recorded radio traffic indicates one of the men admitted to drinking "about five beers" before the crash and told police that he was not wearing a seat belt. Radio traffic also stated that witnesses told police this was a head-on crash and at least one of the drivers was ejected through the windshield of his vehicle.

The westbound lanes of 75th Street over Interstate 35 remain closed for several hours as police investigated the crash. All lanes reopened about 9:30 Tuesday evening.

Police have not released the names of the drivers.

The Kansas Highway Patrol, Overland Park Police Department, and the Shawnee Police Department assisted Merriam police at the scene.

Two people were injured when two vehicles crashed head-on in Shawnee late Monday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the westbound Shawnee Mission Parkway ramp to Maurer Road around 11:40 a.m..

Firefighters arrived to report two vehicles with heavy damage.

Johnson County Med-Act transported two people from the scene. One with serious injuries, the other with minor injuries.

Police say the Honda Accord was traveling the wrong way on the exit ramp and struck the Chevrolet Silverado head-on.

Major Bill Hisle says, "Luckily they were on the ramp so they were not at highway speeds."

Two people injured in head-on collision

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating after two vehicles collided head on this morning.

The accident was reported at approximately 6:15 a.m. on 199th Street about one-quarter of a mile east of Switzer Road in Aubry Township.

Initial reports indicate that one driver may have been driving erratically and crossed the center line in attempt to pass another vehicle just before the collision occurred. There are also reports that the roadway is slippery, possibly patches of black ice in the area.

Johnson County Fire District No. 2 and Johnson County Med-Act responded to the scene where the found two people injured. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, one ended up in the ditch off the side of the roadway. One person had to be extricated from the vehicle that came to rest in the ditch.

One driver is said to be a male in his mid 50's with an apparent broken leg. He was wearing a seat belt and was pinned in his vehicle when first responders arrived. Crews worked for about 15 minutes to extricate that him from the vehicle. His injuries are said to be serious.

The second driver is said to be a male in his mid 20's. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, possible back injury.

Sheriff's Deputies and Overland Park Police have shutdown both directions of 199th Street between Switzer Road and Antioch Road.

Dispatchers tell Operation 100 News that the roadway will remain closed for an extended period of time.

Head-on crash on K-10 seriously injures one person

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office tells the Lawrence Journal-World the accident occurred about 5:40 a.m..

A westbound Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Jakob Devore, 21 of Ottawa, drifted into the eastbound lane.

An eastbound Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Lauro Salas Garcia, 51 of Topeka, collided head-on with Devore's car. The Sivlerado overturned, trapping Garcia.

Sergeant Steve Lewis of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office tells the Journal-World that Garcia was transported by air ambulance to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. The extent of his injuries were unknown. Devore refused medical treatment.

Douglas County authorities are investigating a head on collision on Kansas Highway 10 bypass this morning just outside of Lawrence.

The crash was reported just before 5:40 a.m. on the South Lawrence Trafficway (K-10 bypass) just to the south of Clinton Parkway.

Deputies arriving at the scene reported two vehicles involved, one had rolled onto its roof and sustained heavy damage. The driver of that vehicle was extricated from the wreckage.

One person was transported from the scene to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka by a LifeStar air-ambulance.

A second person, said to have minor injuries, refused medical treatment.

Authorities closed K-10 to all traffic due to debris being scattered across the highway and for the LifeStar helicopter to land on the roadway. All lanes were reopened at 6:45 a.m. and the crash scene was completely clear by 7:45 a.m..

Two injured in head-on crash

Leavenworth County authorities are investigating after two vehicles collided head-on this morning south of Tonganoxie.

The accident was reported around 5:15 a.m. on U.S. Highway 24-40, also known as Chieftain Road, just to the south of 222nd Street. The crash scene was approximately one mile south of Tonganoxie.

First responders arrived at the scene to report two trucks were involved and both had sustained heavy damage. Each vehicle was said to have been occupied by only a driver. Crews had to extricate both men from their trucks.

A responding EMS unit reported thick fog with visibility of under 0.25 miles. Due to the decreased visibility, one medic unit was dispatched to respond from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical. That Lawrence medic unit was cancelled prior to their arrival at the scene.

Officials say the injuries are serious and both men have been transported to a Kansas City area trauma center.

Initial reports indicate that one man was wearing a seat belt, the other was not. It is estimated that both trucks were traveling at approximately 50 miles per hour when they collided head-on.

Officials are working to determine what led up to the accident and what role the weather may have played. As standard procedure, authorities are also investigating if either driver was possibly intoxicated.

U.S. Highway 24-40 was shut down to all traffic while crews were on the scene. As of 6:30 a.m., there has been no official confirmation as to whether or not the roadway has reopened.
