Motorcyclist critically injured in crash with pickup truck

A man in his early 40s was transported to an area trauma center after his motorcycle crashed into the side of a pickup truck Saturday evening in Merriam.

Merriam police, Overland Park firefighters, and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics were called to Antioch Road at the top of the ramps to and from Interstate 35 just before 6:30 p.m.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the motorcyclist, only identified as a 41-year-old man, to the University of Kansas Medical Center in critical condition. He was not wearing a helmet according to the police.

No one in the truck was injured. The driver of the truck remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation.

At the scene, a Merriam Police Sergeant said they're unsure which driver had the green light. Police believe the motorcycle was southbound on Antioch, and the truck was exiting from northbound Interstate 35 to northbound Antioch Road.

The Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit was called in to assist with the crash investigation. Shawnee officers mapped the crash scene using a FARO 3D Laser Scanner and a drone.

The intersection reopened at about 9:15 p.m.

Olathe man arrested after brief car chase in Lenexa

Lenexa Police arrested a 54-year-old Olathe man after he allegedly failed to yield for a traffic stop on Interstate 35 just after 9:30 Thursday evening.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez of the Lenexa Police Department says an officer tried to stop the vehicle in the 8700 block of southbound Interstate 35 for a lighting violation.

"The vehicle got off on the 95th Street ramp, where our officers disregarded the traffic stop," Chavez said.

Officers tailed the vehicle, a 2002 Chevrolet Impala, as it drove west on 95th Street to Pflumm Road, where the driver turned north. The suspect turned east on Santa Fe Trail Drive, and then south on Quivira Road.

"At times, officers were able to see the direction the vehicle was headed and we successfully deployed stop sticks in the 9400 block of Quivira," Chavez said.

After hitting the stop sticks, the driver continued to westbound 95th Street and back to northbound Pflumm Road. He drove through several parking lots near 87th Street and Pflumm then returned to southbound Pflumm Road.

"We were also receiving calls from citizens about the location of the vehicle," Chavez said. "The vehicle was eventually located abandoned in the 9400 block of Pflumm."

A witness who was driving behind the suspect vehicle gave officers a description of the suspect and told them he ran east along 94th Street.

Officers quickly set a perimeter to contain the suspect and deployed a K-9 to search for him.

"We received a call from a citizen in the 13400 block of West 94th Street who said that an unknown male was sitting on his front porch," Chavez said. "Our officers contacted this male and he was eventually arrested for numerous warrants."

Kilgore is awaiting his first appearance in court on new charges related to the pursuit. His pending charge shows to be a felony for reckless fleeing from a law enforcement officer. He's also being held on charges from a 2017 obstruction case in which he failed to appear for his court date.

Troopers identify man killed in Sunday morning crash in Olathe

The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified a 35-year-old Kansas City, Kansas man as the person killed in a crash with a tractor-trailer early Sunday morning.

Troopers say the crash occurred about 12:02 a.m. Sunday on northbound Interstate 35 just north of the 119th Street overpass.

The Highway Patrol's crash log says a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 was traveling northbound in an unknown lane when the driver lost control, ran off the road to the left, struck the median barrier wall, and became disabled in the left lane.

Troopers say a 2014 International semi-power unit was also traveling northbound in the left lane. The driver of the tractor-trailer did not see the disabled pickup and crashed into it.

The Olathe Fire Department and Johnson County Med-Act responded to the crash scene with Olathe Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol. The pickup's driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Monday, Troopers identified the driver of the pickup truck as Nolvin Nain Lopez-Flores, 35, of Kansas City, Kansas. The crash log says Lopez-Flores was not believed to have been wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was identified as a 62-year-old man from Buckner, Missouri. He was not injured in the crash. While this driver is named in the crash log, Operation 100 News will not be releasing his name as he has not been charged or accused of wrongdoing.

A law-enforcement officer at the scene confirmed to Operation 100 News that the tractor-trailer's driver remained on scene, called for help, and is cooperating with the investigation.

The Highway Patrol's crash log says next of kin notification was made by two Troopers about 11:50 p.m. Sunday.

Radio traffic from the investigating Troopers indicated the Highway Patrol was having difficulty locating a next of kin. The pickup truck involved was registered to Flores-Lopez's employer.

Two injured in reported head-on crash in Merriam

Police continue to investigate after two people were injured in a crash on a busy Johnson County road on Tuesday afternoon.

Merriam Police say the crash happened just after 2 p.m. in the westbound lanes of 75th Street on the bridge over Interstate 35.

Overland Park Fire Department firefighters arrived to find one of the heavily damaged vehicles on fire and both drivers outside of the cars.

Johnson County Med-Act transported two men to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Police say their injuries are non-life threatening. One of the men is in his late teens, and the other is in his late-20s.

Recorded radio traffic indicates one of the men admitted to drinking "about five beers" before the crash and told police that he was not wearing a seat belt. Radio traffic also stated that witnesses told police this was a head-on crash and at least one of the drivers was ejected through the windshield of his vehicle.

The westbound lanes of 75th Street over Interstate 35 remain closed for several hours as police investigated the crash. All lanes reopened about 9:30 Tuesday evening.

Police have not released the names of the drivers.

The Kansas Highway Patrol, Overland Park Police Department, and the Shawnee Police Department assisted Merriam police at the scene.

Olathe Police are investigating after a man was shot to death inside a bar late Wednesday.

Sergeant Bryan Hill says police were called to the Double Nickel, 189 S. Rogers Road, at 11:39 p.m. on reports of shots fired.

"Officers arrived and found a 38-year-old man who was suffering a gunshot wound to the chest," Sgt. Hill said in a news briefing near the scene. "Despite their efforts, the person passed away here at the Double Nickel."

Police have identified the shooting victim as 38-year-old William Ray Schutkesting of Olathe, Kansas.

Witnesses told police that the suspect ran out of a back door after the shooting. An Olathe Police K-9 tracked down the 28-year-old male suspect across Interstate 35 from the bar, where he was taken into custody.

Police have identified the suspect as 28-year-old Michael Chinn of Augusta, Kansas. Chinn is being held at the New Century Adult Detention Center near Gardner, where he is awaiting his first court appearance.

Sgt. Hill says the shooting occurred inside the Double Nickel Bar & Grill and officers continue to interview witnesses. Officers are still investigating whether or not the victim knew the suspect.

Officers from the Lenexa Police Department, along with Deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office assisted Olathe Police with holding a perimeter during the suspect search.

Man critically injured in crash with I-35 scale house

A 25-year-old man was transported to an area hospital in critical condition after crashing into a scale house on Interstate 35 early this morning.

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies were called to the southbound Interstate 35 scale house, near milepost 213, just after 1:50 Tuesday morning.

The scale house is located one mile south of Lone Elm Road and 159th Street or approximately two miles north of Gardner.

A truck driver called 911 after witnessing a car crash through several signs on the exit ramp to the weigh station and possibly crash into the side of the building.

Arriving deputies reported the car was heavily damaged and the driver's door would not open. The building sustained minor damage, a few bricks were knocked loose according to deputies.

No one was inside the building when the crash occurred.

Firefighters from Johnson County Fire District No. 1 and Olathe Fire arrived with Johnson County Med-Act. The driver was able to get himself out of the car, to be seen by Med-Act.

Johnson County Med-Act reported the driver's injuries to be critical and said the man became combative with them on the way to the hospital.

The vehicle was estimated to have sustained approximately 18 inches of intrusion.

Deputies are investigating if alcohol may have contributed to the crash.

KCMO woman killed in I-35 crash in JoCo

The Kansas Highway Patrol and Merriam Police are investigating after one person was ejected from their vehicle in a crash on Interstate 35.

The crash occurred in the southbound lanes of the Interstate, south of Antioch Road shortly before 9 a.m. Friday.

Troopers say a 1995 Jeep Wrangler and a 2008 Mercedes-Benz E350 were both traveling southbound on Interstate 35. The Jeep was in the left lane when the driver lost control and veered to the right.

The Jeep's passenger door struck the front corner of the Mercedes-Benz, which was traveling in the next lane. The collision caused the Mercedes-Benz to spin and sent the Jeep into a guard rail off of the right shoulder. The Jeep's driver was ejected when the vehicle struck the guard rail. Both vehicles ended up on the left shoulder of the Interstate.

Troopers have identified the Jeep's driver as Dalainya D. Dauster, 44, of Kansas City, Missouri. She was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the crash.

Troopers continue to investigate.

KCK man killed after trying to outrun police in JoCo

Gardner Police and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office are investigating after a police pursuit ended in a fatal accident Wednesday morning.

Gardner Police were called to a gas station near 188th and Gardner Road just after midnight on reports of an intoxicated person driving an SUV. There was a second report of a possibly intoxicated driver in a dark-colored SUV that was traveling southbound on Gardner Road.

Officers spotted a dark-colored SUV getting on northbound Interstate 35 from Gardner Road. The driver did not stop when officers attempted a traffic stop. Gardner officers began to pursue the vehicle.

The driver turned around near 175th Street and sped off southbound on Interstate 35 around 12:10 Wednesday morning. Officers reported the SUV was driving erratically with speeds between 60 and 70 miles-per-hour as they continued in pursuit.

Master Deputy Jill Koch of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office says, "Gardner officers observed continuous erratic behavior that posed a great risk to public safety. Repeated attempts to stop the vehicle were unsuccessful."

The driver of the 1996 Toyota 4Runner then exited at Homestead Lane and continued northbound onto the property of BNSF Railway's Logistics Park Kansas City Intermodal Facility at 32880 West 191st Street.

The pursuit then left the Intermodal Facility, returned southbound on Homestead Lane and then westbound on 199th Street.

Gardner Police continued in pursuit as Sheriff's Deputies tried to get in front of the pursuit from the west side of Edgerton. Deputies were trying to get into position to use spike strips on the suspect vehicle's tires.

The suspect vehicle crashed near Mildale Farms at 35250 West 199th Street just after 12:15 a.m.. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Gardner officers reported the driver had been ejected from the vehicle and immediately requested Med-Act to respond.

Johnson County Fire District No. 1 and Johnson County Med-Act were dispatched and arrived in less than five minutes. The first fire unit to arrive at the crash scene reported the car was off of the road and on its side.

Master Deputy Koch confirmed in a news release on Wednesday, that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

A news release on Friday identified the driver as Arthur Lee Wright, 65, of Kansas City, Kansas.

The pursuit covered about 10 miles in just under 10 minutes.

75th Street and Interstate 35 construction project update

The Kansas Department of Transportation says the ramps on the south side of 75th Street will reopen on Tuesday, September 2nd. The ramps were closed in July for pavement repair work.

Beginning Tuesday, September 2nd through late October the ramps on the north side of 75th Street will be closed for the same work to be completed.

Marked detours will be provided.

The detour for traffic on southbound Interstate 35 will exit at 67th Street, east to southbound Antioch Road, back to 75th Street.

The detour for drivers trying to get onto northbound Interstate 35 will continue also use Antioch Road and the 67th Street entrance ramp.

Traffic on 75th Street will be shifted to the south side of the bridge, with one through lane in each direction.

KDOT says drivers should expect major delays during peak commute times.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2015 and is being overseen by the city of Overland Park.

OP police continue to investigate weekend shooting

Overland Park Police are investigating after a man was shot in the foot early Saturday morning.

Merriam Police were called to the area of Antioch Road and Interstate 35 on multiple 911 reports of shots fired and a possible shooting shortly before 2 a.m.. A Merriam officer contacted a man on Antioch Road who had been shot. The officer requested Johnson County Med-Act to respond.

Johnson County Med-Act transported a 24-year-old man with a single gunshot wound to his left foot to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. His injuries are said to be non life-threatening.

Overland Park Police responded to assist Merriam with the investigation. A short time after the victim was transported, evidence was found in an apartment complex near 54th Terrace and Antioch Road, just inside Overland Park city limits.

Overland Park Police Public Information Officer Gary Mason says, "the shooter is believed to be known to the victim but we haven't identified them yet. The victim isn't giving us much help yet so it's obviously still under investigation."

Antioch Road was closed from Interstate 35, south to 55th Street. The ramp from northbound I-35 to Antioch Road was also closed as police investigated. Antioch and the ramp reopened around 4:30 a.m..

75th Street construction project underway, already causing major delays

Work is underway on a construction project that is sure to cause major traffic delays in Johnson County. On Thursday, July 10th the crews narrowed 75th Street to just one lane in each direction, and shifted traffic to the north side of 75th Street. The project is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2015.

The city of Overland Park is overseeing the project, which spans from Shawnee into Merriam and Overland Park. Work will impact traffic on 75th Street between Switzer Road and E. Frontage Road.

Shawnee officials say 75th Street will be shifted to the north half of the roadway for pavement replacement and bridge work. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Switzer Road and E. Frontage Road.

The Kansas Department of Transportation says the ramps to and from Interstate 35, south of 75th Street will also be closed. Spokesperson Kimberly Qualls says the northbound Interstate 35 exit ramp to 75th Street and the entrance ramp from 75th Street to southbound Interstate 35 will both close at 11 a.m. Thursday. The ramps will remain closed until late August.

Once traffic is shifted to the north half of 75th Street, eastbound traffic will not be able to access northbound 75th Street.

Qualls says there will be a marked detour, utilizing 67th Street and Antioch Road.

Northbound I-35 traffic will detour via 67th Street exit and take eastbound 67th Street to Antioch Road, then southbound Antioch Road to eastbound 75th Street back to I-35. (See KDOT provided map below)

Traffic for the ramp from 75th Street to southbound I-35 will be detoured eastbound on 75th Street to Antioch Road, then northbound on Antioch Road to westbound 67th Street and back to southbound I-35.

In late August, 75th Street traffic will be shifted to the south half of 75th Street and the ramps north of 75th Street will be closed.

The intersection of 75th Street and Switzer Road will also be closed for one weekend for storm drainage work. A date for this closure has not been announced.

Overland Park officials say access to all businesses and properties along the route will be open throughout the construction process according to a news release from the city of Shawnee.

Olathe Police are investigating an accident involving a motorcycle on Interstate 35 this morning.

Police say they were called to the scene at 11:42 Friday for an accident in the southbound lanes of the interstate, just south of Santa Fe Street.

Officers located an unresponsive 23-year-old male who was the motorcycle rider.

A news release states that initial reports indicate that the motorcycle was southbound on Interstate 35 when it struck the rear of another southbound vehicle.

The rider was transported to an area hospital with life threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle stopped at the scene and was not injured in the accident.

Olathe Police, with the assistance of the Kansas Highway Patrol and KDOT shut down the southbound lanes for nearly three hours as they investigated the accident.

Firefighters extinguish Lenexa house fire

Firefighters from Lenexa and Overland Park battled cold temperatures on the scene of a house fire this morning.

Crews were dispatched to 13216 W. 95th Street just before 8:15 Monday. The address is just between Pflumm Road and Interstate 35, on 95th Street.

Lenexa Fire arrived to report flames visible from the a back window of the two story home. Firefighters assisted residents and a dog from the home.

Police have closed a section of 95th Street between Noland Road and Haskins Street.

The address is familiar to Lenexa Police, who advised fire crews this home has been involved in manufacturing Methamphetamine in the past.

Firefighters were able to knock down heavy fire in the rear of the structure.

The fire was reported to be under control at 9:08 a.m..

No injuries were reported.

Temperatures were around 12°F with a wind chill of only 1°F while crews were on scene.

Firefighters from Lenexa and Overland Park extinguished an apartment fire this afternoon.

Crews were called to the London House Apartments in the 9800 block of Buckingham Road, around 2:15 Friday afternoon. The apartment complex is just south of 95th Street, on the east side of Interstate 35.

A resident ran to the apartment complex clubhouse and reported a fire in the kitchen of his apartment.

Firefighters arrived about three minutes later to find visible smoke and fire through one window of the building. Crews reported heavy smoke from the floor to the ceiling of the second floor apartment, where the fire is believed to have originated.

The fire spread into the building's walls and to the third floor. The entire building is said to have smoke damage, from the basement to the third level.

Police and fire crews knocked on apartment doors to confirm that all residents of the building were aware of the fire and had made it outside.

Several cats and dogs were rescued from the building by firefighters.

The fire was reported to be under control at 3:33 p.m..

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available.

Interstate 435 is back open following an early morning car chase.
 
Overland Park Police started a low speed pursuit of a black Acura passenger car on westbound Interstate 435 around 2:45 Monday morning. Officers reported the vehicle's speed to be 17 miles per hour and approaching the Quivira Road overpass.

Speeds ranged between two and 10 miles per hour for the majority of the 25 minute pursuit. 

Pursuing officers reported the driver nearly struck the concrete jersey barrier at least once.

Overland Park Police were able to get spike strips out in front of the vehicle, just west of Quivira Road. The first set of spikes only hit the right side tires of the vehicle. The driver accelerated to just over 40 mile per hour, with officers right behind him.

As the pursuit crossed into Lenexa, officers were there with a second set of spike strips in the vehicle's path. The second set of spikes deflated all four of the vehicle's tires just before the Interstate 435 intersection with Interstate 35.

The driver continued westbound on I-435 to just before Lackman Road, where his vehicle came to a stop sideways across the highway and only about three miles from where the pursuit had started 25 minutes earlier.

Once stopped, the driver continued to ignore officers and could be seen moving around in the driver's seat of the stopped vehicle.

Police from Overland Park, Lenexa and Shawnee closed both directions of the I-435 between Kansas Highway 10 and Interstate 35. 

About 20 minutes after the vehicle stopped, officers approached in a patrol vehicle and were able to take the driver into custody without further incident.

Johnson County Med-Act was called to check the driver for possible injuries. He refused any treatment at the scene and remained in police custody.

Police are still investigating why the man chose not to stop for officers.

All eastbound lanes were reopened before 4 a.m.. Westbound lanes reopened about 4:17 a.m.. A tow truck removed the suspect vehicle from the right shoulder just before 5 a.m..

Man stabbed during fight in Olathe neighborhood

Olathe Police are investigating after a man was found stabbed early this morning.

Police say they were called to the 16100 block of S. Cooper Street on reports of several males fighting.

Officers arrived and contacted the occupants of a vehicle which was seen leaving that area. One officer noticed blood on the back of the victim, who police say, did not realize that he had been stabbed.

Johnson County Med-Act responded to the vehicle stop on the ramp from U.S. 169 Highway to 151st Street and reported the man's injury to be serious but, not immediately life-threatening.

He was transported to an area hospital for further treatment.

A 19-year-old male was arrested at the Cooper Street address and a folding knife was recovered by officers.

The case will be forwarded to the Johnson County District Attorney's Office for charging.

PHOTOS: Wrong way driver killed in Sunday morning crash, that injured four others, has been identified

Police have identified the driver that was killed in the accident as Julio Cesar Romero-Zepeda, 22, of Olathe, Kansas.

Operation 100 News has spoke to one of the people who called 9-1-1 to report the accident, Darla Williams of Gardner, Kansas. Williams says that she was on her way home from babysitting her grandson in Olathe when she came upon the crash.


Williams said, "It was so dark, I could only hear the screams and I told 911 to send at least three ambulances, maybe more."


Olathe Police have not released any other information regarding the accident's cause or any other circumstances surrounding the crash.

There were no updates available on the other victims of the crash early Tuesday afternoon.

Olathe Police are investigating if a wrong way vehicle may have caused a serious accident this morning on Interstate 35.

The crash was reported shortly before 2:30 Sunday morning in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near Sheridan Street, north of Old U.S. 56 highway.

Police arrived on the scene to report two vehicles with heavy damage and several people trapped inside of a van.



Olathe fire crews reported one of the involved vehicles had rolled over following the crash and had sustained very heavy damage. Firefighters extricated at least three people from vehicles.

Johnson County Med-Act transported three people with critical injuries and at least two others are said to have serious injuries. A total of five ambulances were involved on the call.

The injured people were transported to three different area hospitals.

At 3:52 a.m., Operation 100 News was able to confirm that one of the critically injured, a 22-year-old male, had passed away at an area hospital.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 at Santa Fe (135th Street) were closed until around 6 a.m. Sunday for the accident scene to be investigated and cleaned up.

During the clean up, a mini-van crashed into a barricade that was blocking the southbound lanes. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the driver was not injured in this secondary accident.

Olathe man identified as person found in burned out car

Update:

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office has identified the deceased person as Jerome Stonebraker, 61, of Olathe, Kansas.

Master Deputy Tom Erickson says "the investigation determined there was no criminal activity involved in Stonebraker's death."

No other information has been released.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a body was found in a burning vehicle east of Gardner, Sunday morning.

Johnson County Fire District No. 1 firefighters were called to respond on a grass fire shortly at 5:37 a.m., near the intersection of 183rd Street and Clare Road.

Firefighters found a small area of grass on fire and a vehicle fully engulfed in flames, when they arrived at 5:46 a.m..

Fire officials confirmed to Operation 100 News that as firefighters extinguished the car fire, a body was found inside and Sheriff's Deputies were requested to respond.

Master Deputy Tom Erickson says, "there was one deceased person in the vehicle that deputies have not identified at this time. Detectives and the Johnson County Crime Lab are investigating."

Olathe Police are investigating after shots were fired in the Houlihan's parking lot, 16411 W 119th Street, Wednesday evening.

Police initially responded following a report of one employee threatening another employee with a gun.

Sergeant Bryan Hill says officers were dispatched at 9:51 p.m. on a report of an aggravated assault.

Officers arrived and stopped a possible suspect vehicle in the parking lot. After stopping the vehicle, a single gunshot was heard from the suspect's vehicle.

Police say the subject inside the vehicle shot himself. That subject remained conscious and moving but was non-compliant with officer's commands.

Officers evacuated about 30 people from inside the Houlihan's, through a back door. At least one other nearby business was evacuated.

The Olathe Tactical Support Unit was called to the scene and secured the subject's weapon, inside the vehicle.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the subject to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with life threatening injuries.

The subject has been identified as a 27-year-old Houlihan's employee and Overland Park resident. Police say he died at the hospital, early Thursday morning.

During the situation, several area roads were closed, including 119th Street between Interstate 35 and Renner Boulevard. Renner Boulevard was also closed between 119th Street and Bass Pro Drive. All roads reopened shortly after 12 a.m. Thursday.

Olathe Police received assistance during the incident from numerous agencies across Johnson County. These assisting agencies included officers and resources from the Lenexa Police Department, Shawnee Police Department and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.
