DUI suspected in late night crash with tree along Metcalf

A man in his mid-30s was seriously injured in a crash with a tree near 66th Terrace and Metcalf late Wednesday in Overland Park.

Police and firefighters were called to the 6600 block of Metcalf about 10:05 p.m. following reports that a truck had crashed into a tree.

"Witnesses reported vehicle one was traveling at a high rate of speed and at times driving southbound in the northbound lanes," Officer John Lacy of the Overland Park Police Department said. "Vehicle one ran off the road to the west and struck a tree."

At the scene, firefighters worked for about 10 minutes to extricate the driver from the crashed truck. The man suffered serious injuries to his legs.

Johnson County Med-Act and Overland Park firefighters transported the man to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

Officer Lacy confirms the man sustained severe injuries and is suspected of driving under the influence.

Firefighters from Consolidated Fire District No. 2 and Mission police officers also responded to the call.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

One person killed in fiery western Lenexa crash

The Lenexa Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is investigating after one person was killed in a fiery crash on Prairie Star Parkway late Wednesday evening.

It happened about 9:15 p.m. in the median of Prairie Star Parkway just east of Tallgrass Drive in western Lenexa.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez says officers arrived to find the car engulfed in flames.

Lenexa firefighters worked for about five minutes to extinguish the flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. An extensive search of the immediate area was conducted to ensure no one had been ejected from the car. No one was located in the search.

Police believe the car was driving westbound at high speed when it left the road.

"[The car] left the roadway into the center median and struck large landscaping boulders," Ofc. Chavez said. "We don't have any info on the deceased yet."

The crash forced officers to close Prairie Star Parkway in both directions between Lone Elm Road and Prairie Creek Road for several hours.

One person injured in early morning crash in Shawnee

A man in his 30s was transported to an area trauma center after he was found lying on the ground approximately 20 feet from his crashed SUV on Shawnee Mission Parkway just west of Interstate 435 in Shawnee.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics were called to the scene about 1:50 Sunday morning. Firefighters arrived to find one vehicle with substantial front end damage on the right shoulder of westbound Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Recorded radio traffic indicates the man, who was believed to be heavily intoxicated, told first responders that he was not the driver.

Police and firefighters diverted all westbound traffic onto northbound Interstate 435 as they searched for a second person who had possibly been ejected in the crash. The man later told paramedics that he was alone in the SUV.

Radio traffic indicated paramedics believed the injured man might have been ejected from the SUV. His injuries were described as serious but not immediately life-threatening. Johnson County Med-Act transported him to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

The Lenexa Police Department assisted with searches of the area of the possibility of another ejected person with a drone and with a K-9. No one was located during those searches.

The westbound lanes of Shawnee Mission Parkway reopened shortly after 3:30 a.m.

Police are investigating the crash as being DUI related. No other details were immediately available.

Man critically injured in rollover crash late Saturday

A man in his 30’s was critically injured when the SUV he was driving crashed into a ditch in Shawnee late Saturday night.

Shawnee police, firefighters, and Johnson County Med-Act were called to the 14200 block of Midland Drive shortly before 11 p.m. on a reported rollover crash.

Firefighters had to remove the passenger’s door to safely extricate the driver, who was found lying across the passenger’s seat.

The man was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with critical injuries.

Recorded radio traffic indicates officers suspect alcohol may have been involved.

Midland Drive was closed between 67^th Street and 68^th Terrace for about two hours as emergency crews worked the scene.

Shawnee Police continue to investigate the crash.

Three injured in Massachusetts Street rollover crash

Three women were injured when the vehicle they were riding in crashed and rolled onto its top late Saturday night in Downtown Lawrence.

Lawrence Police and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews were called to the intersection of 13th Street and Massachusetts Street, just before midnight, where they found a vehicle on its roof.

Radio traffic from the scene indicates none of the injured women were wearing seatbelts and one of them was thrown out of the vehicle when it rolled over.

The women range in age from 17-20 years old. One was transported by ambulance to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The other two were transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are investigating the crash.

No other details were immediately available.

Elderly woman killed, man injured in Merriam crash

Merriam Police are investigating after an elderly woman was killed in a crash late Tuesday morning.

Police say they were called to the intersection of eastbound Shawnee Mission Parkway and Mackey Street just after 10 a.m.

Captain Troy Duvanel of the Merriam Police Department says the crash involved several vehicle and one of them crashed into a rock wall. An elderly couple was in the car which crashed into the rock wall. 

Capt. Duvanel says the elderly male was driving.

Radio traffic indicates the elderly female was riding in the backseat of the car, behind the driver’s seat, and that both were wearing seatbelts.

Firefighters from Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 2 were first to arrive on the scene and reported heavy damage to one vehicle.

worked to divert all eastbound traffic to Antioch Road.

Capt. Duvanel says the man was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. His wife was pronounced dead at the scene. No one in any of the other vehicles was injured.

 The Shawnee Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit was called in to assist with documenting the crash scene for the investigation into its cause.

Police have the eastbound lanes of Shawnee Mission Parkway closed at Antioch Road as the crash is investigated. All eastbound traffic is being diverted onto Antioch Road. Police say the closure of the eastbound lanes will likely remain in place for several hours.

Wrong-way driver causes crash south of Lawrence

The Kansas Highway Patrol says a wrong-way driver caused a head-on crash south of Lawrence on New Year's Day.

Troopers say the crash occurred just after 6 p.m. in the southbound lanes of U.S. 59 Highway at North 1200 Road, or about three-quarters of a mile south of Kansas Highway 10.

The Highway Patrol's preliminary crash report says a 54-year-old Eudora man was driving a 2015 Jeep Wrangler northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway. A 74-year-old Ottawa woman was driving southbound in a 2012 Toyota Camry with her six-year-old grandson as a passenger.

The wrong-way Jeep crashed head-on with the Toyota at the intersection of U.S. 59 and North 1200 Road.

Troopers say the crash caused the Toyota to spin and come to rest in the middle of the intersection, while the wrong-way Jeep stopped on North 1200 Road.

Both drivers were transported to hospitals by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical ambulances. The man driving the Jeep was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital to be checked out. The woman driving the Toyota, along with her grandson, were transported to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center with what Troopers describe as a "suspected minor injury." The six-year-old boy was not injured but was transported with his grandmother until his parents could arrive to be with him.

All three people involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts.

Troopers arrested the driver of the Jeep for suspicion of DUI, transporting an open container of alcohol, and aggravated battery causing bodily harm while DUI. Formal charges have not been filed.

Operation 100 News does not release the names of individuals involved in crashes unless they are charged with a crime. As of this report, no formal charges have been filed.

Two injured in reported head-on crash in Merriam

Police continue to investigate after two people were injured in a crash on a busy Johnson County road on Tuesday afternoon.

Merriam Police say the crash happened just after 2 p.m. in the westbound lanes of 75th Street on the bridge over Interstate 35.

Overland Park Fire Department firefighters arrived to find one of the heavily damaged vehicles on fire and both drivers outside of the cars.

Johnson County Med-Act transported two men to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Police say their injuries are non-life threatening. One of the men is in his late teens, and the other is in his late-20s.

Recorded radio traffic indicates one of the men admitted to drinking "about five beers" before the crash and told police that he was not wearing a seat belt. Radio traffic also stated that witnesses told police this was a head-on crash and at least one of the drivers was ejected through the windshield of his vehicle.

The westbound lanes of 75th Street over Interstate 35 remain closed for several hours as police investigated the crash. All lanes reopened about 9:30 Tuesday evening.

Police have not released the names of the drivers.

The Kansas Highway Patrol, Overland Park Police Department, and the Shawnee Police Department assisted Merriam police at the scene.

Shawnee Fire Department trains for mass casualty crash

For three consecutive days last week, all 66 Shawnee Firefighters worked their way through a mock mass casualty crash. Each day the scenario involved a school bus, several vehicles, and volunteers playing the role of injured and hysterical people at the scene.

Shawnee firefighters peel back the roof of a vehicle to remove a dummy that was trapped in the simulated crash with a school bus.

Last Wednesday’s scenario involved 17 victims with varying levels of injury spread among three passenger vehicles and the school bus. 11 volunteers filled the school bus, which in the drill had been rear-ended in as part of a chain-reaction crash. One car was partially under the rear of the bus. A second car was on its roof and partly on top of the first car. A third car was rolled onto its side near the front of the bus and was blocking all access to the door of the bus.

Firefighters arrived on the scene of the simulation to find a school bus involved in a crash with three other vehicles and multiple victims trapped.

Firefighters had to use struts, straps, and large chains to stabilize all involved vehicles before they could begin the work of safely removing all of the injured. A firefighter and a Johnson County Med-Act paramedic were lifted through the emergency window of the bus to start evaluating injuries inside as other firefighters worked to cut a hole in the wall of the bus.

One-by-one the injured passengers of the bus were lifted off and then moved across the scene to Johnson County Med-Act’s triage area where their injuries would be evaluated further.

After all of the victims had been removed from the vehicles, firefighters and paramedics gathered to discuss the drill and assess their response and handling of the various aspects.

Shawnee Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Pyle addressed everyone who participated in the exercise after its conclusion.

Deputy Fire Chief Sal Scarpa told Operation 100 News this drill was the first time they had the opportunity to use a school bus.

“On a three or four vehicle crash we may see five or six people with injuries,” Scarpa said. “The school bus changes everything, and we have to be prepared for that.”

The school bus was donated to the department for use in the scenario by the Kincaid Group which operates school buses for the Shawnee Mission School District as DS Bus Lines. Several Kansas City area towing companies donated the passenger vehicles.

Alcohol, speed cited in April 3 crash that injured three

April 21 update:

Operation 100 News has obtained a copy of the accident report for the April 3rd crash that injured three teenagers on Pflumm Road.

The report shows that the 2015 Honda Civic, occupied by three 18-year-old men, was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Pflumm Road at approximately 10:50 p.m.

Shawnee Police have charged Alexander Kiegerl, of Lenexa, with speeding, preliminary breath test refusal, and DUI.

According to the report, police estimate that the vehicle was traveling between 62.05 miles-per-hour and 68.57 miles-per-hour when the car crossed the centerline of Pflumm Road, just north of 67th Street. The posted speed limit on Pflumm Road is 30 miles-per-hour. The report states that the driver lost control, went off of the right side of the road, and struck the east curb. The car crossed the centerline a second time, spun 180 degrees, and then went off the west side of the road, crashing through a chain-link fence, and finally coming to rest when the rear of the car struck a tree.

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, a blood alcohol concentration of .02 percent or greater is a crime in Kansas for drivers under 21 years of age. The accident report states that Kiegerl, 18, tested .09 percent according to the accident report. The legal limit for drivers 21 and older is .08 percent. The accident report identifies the two 18-year-old passengers, one of Lenexa and one of Shawnee. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash. Operation 100 News is not releasing their names as the police report does not list any charges against them.

Three teenagers were injured in an crash late Friday night in Shawnee.

The crash happened at about 11 p.m. near the intersection of 65th Street and Pflumm Road.

Joe Petersen, who lives nearby, said that the car involved in the crash was northbound on Pflumm Road and "doing some fast and furious stuff."

Petersen says police returned to the scene Saturday morning, marking the path of the vehicle.

The spray paint markings left behind on the road indicate that the car was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Pflumm Road, just past 67th Street. Markings then weave back to the correct side of the road where a curb was struck. The collision with the curb appears to have sent the car back across the southbound lane, over a curb, through a chain link fence and finally coming to rest nearly head-on against a tree.

At least two of the fence posts were pulled out of the ground, with their concrete base, several fence posts were sheared in half.

Major Dan Tennis of the Shawnee Police Department said that evidence at the scene of the crash indicates that the car was traveling faster than 50 miles-per-hour. The posted speed limit is 30 miles-per-hour.

Police say the driver of the 2015 Honda Civic involved in the crash an 18-year-old Lenexa man, was arrested on charges of DUI.

Public records show that the driver was processed and then released with a notice to appear. He was not booked into the county jail.

Petersen says there were three teenagers in the car and several beer cans could be seen in the grass near the tree where the car came to rest.

According to Petersen, all three teenagers got out and started to walk away from the crashed car. The crash was witnessed by a woman who was traveling south on Pflumm Road when the car crossed in front of her and then through the fence.

"She slammed on her brakes to avoid hitting them," Petersen said.

One of the teenagers was bleeding, as indicated by a trail of blood droplets on the sidewalk near where the car was left wrecked.

Petersen says two of the teenagers were found near the crashed car and the third was located at his home in Shawnee.

A parent of one teenager involved in the crash, who requested that his name not be used, said that his son was still in the hospital late Saturday morning. His injuries included a broken arm. The parent says his son was a passenger in the 2015 Honda Civic.

Petersen said that he believes the fence saved lives Friday night.

"Had that fence not been there, they would have hit that tree at full steam," he said.

Man critically injured in crash with I-35 scale house

A 25-year-old man was transported to an area hospital in critical condition after crashing into a scale house on Interstate 35 early this morning.

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies were called to the southbound Interstate 35 scale house, near milepost 213, just after 1:50 Tuesday morning.

The scale house is located one mile south of Lone Elm Road and 159th Street or approximately two miles north of Gardner.

A truck driver called 911 after witnessing a car crash through several signs on the exit ramp to the weigh station and possibly crash into the side of the building.

Arriving deputies reported the car was heavily damaged and the driver's door would not open. The building sustained minor damage, a few bricks were knocked loose according to deputies.

No one was inside the building when the crash occurred.

Firefighters from Johnson County Fire District No. 1 and Olathe Fire arrived with Johnson County Med-Act. The driver was able to get himself out of the car, to be seen by Med-Act.

Johnson County Med-Act reported the driver's injuries to be critical and said the man became combative with them on the way to the hospital.

The vehicle was estimated to have sustained approximately 18 inches of intrusion.

Deputies are investigating if alcohol may have contributed to the crash.

Two seriously injured in Overland Park crash

The Overland Park Police Department is investigating a crash which left two people seriously injured.

The crash occurred around 12:15 Friday morning at the intersection of 87th Street and Antioch Road.

Overland Park firefighters arrived on the scene to report two vehicles were involved and one came to rest off of the road.

Johnson County Med-Act transported two people from the scene. One of the injured was said to have critical injuries and the other serious injuries.

Radio traffic indicated that a 28-year-old man, the driver of one vehicle, admitted that he had been drinking prior to the crash.

The southbound lanes of Antioch Road were closed from Santa Fe Drive to 88th Street. Both directions of 87th Street were closed west of Antioch to Benson Street. All lanes reopened around 2 a.m.

Police have not released any other information.

Man dies after ATV collides with deer, woman remains critical

The 22-year-old man involved in an ATV crash near Vinland died as a result of his injuries on Sunday, according to Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lieutenant Steve Lewis.

Hospital officials at the University of Kansas Hospital tell my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World that the 19-year-old female remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Two people were critically injured when their ATV struck a deer in rural Douglas County early Saturday.

A driver found the ATV, on its side, in the middle of North 700 Road around 4:25 Saturday morning and called 911 for help. The crash was located between East 1600 Road and East 1650 Road, near Vinland.

The scene is approximately two and a half miles north of Baldwin City or approximately five miles south of Lawrence.

Deputies were first to arrive on the scene and found a man and a woman, both unconscious, after being thrown from the ATV.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical triaged both of the injured to be in critical condition. First responders from Baldwin City Fire and Lawrence Fire are also on scene.

A 22-year-old man was transported by ambulance to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. A 19-year-old woman was transported by ambulance to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

Life Star and other medical helicopters are grounded due to current weather conditions.

Overland Park Regional spokesperson Chris Hamele tells the Journal-World that the man remains in critical condition Saturday afternoon.

The woman is in serious condition according to Douglas County Sheriff's Office public information officer Steve Lewis.

Shawnee Police are investigating after an SUV sideswiped a parked car and the crashed head-on into a utility pole, leaving the driver seriously injured early Saturday.

A neighbor called 911 around 1:40 Saturday morning, after a Cadillac Escalade crashed head-on into a utility pole at the T-intersection of West 55th and Flint Streets.

Johnson County Med-Act reported the SUV had sustained significant damage and the front airbags had deployed.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle. He was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Police believe speed played a role in the crash and alcohol played a role in the crash.

At the scene, it was clear that the SUV rear-ended a car parked on Flint Street. The impact forced the parked car to collided with another vehicle parked on the street. The impact sheared off part of a front wheel, brake assembly, and axle of the speeding SUV. The SUV continued north and crashed head-on into the utility pole. The pole was split, up the middle and will need to be replaced. The crash did not disrupt power to any nearby homes or street lights.

Late Saturday morning, the damaged utility pole remains, now marked with a large red 'X'.

Shawnee Police activity logs show that the driver was found to be DUI. The driver remains hospitalized late Saturday morning.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a two car crash that ended with a guard rail piercing through one car.

Shawnee Police dispatched officers to the area of Interstate 435 and Midland just before 7:30 Tuesday morning, after dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting an accident. At least one of the callers reported that a vehicle had crossed through the median and struck a guard rail.

Officers located the crash on Interstate 435 between Shawnee Mission Parkway and Midland Drive.

At the scene, one car came to rest on the inside shoulder of northbound I-435 with a guard rail entering the passenger compartment through the engine bay. The end of the guard rail could be seen sticking out of the rear windshield of the car. The second vehicle came to rest in the southbound lanes on I-435.

Johnson County Med-Act reported three minor injuries at the scene. Only one of those injured people was transported by Med-Act to an area hospital.

Troopers say a 2007 Toyota Corolla was southbound in the outside lane, trying to make a lane change, when it was cutoff by an unknown vehicle. The driver of the Toyota swerved to avoid a collision, lost control, and struck a 2007 Cadillac STS, which was also southbound.

The collision forced the Cadillac into the median and the guard rail on the northbound side of the Interstate.

Troopers have identified the driver of the Toyota as a 30-year-old Lenexa woman. There was also a 7-year-old in the Toyota. Both sustained minor injuries, but were not transported by ambulance.

The driver of the Cadillac has been identified as a 64-year-old Topeka man. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his minor injuries.

KCK man killed after trying to outrun police in JoCo

Gardner Police and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office are investigating after a police pursuit ended in a fatal accident Wednesday morning.

Gardner Police were called to a gas station near 188th and Gardner Road just after midnight on reports of an intoxicated person driving an SUV. There was a second report of a possibly intoxicated driver in a dark-colored SUV that was traveling southbound on Gardner Road.

Officers spotted a dark-colored SUV getting on northbound Interstate 35 from Gardner Road. The driver did not stop when officers attempted a traffic stop. Gardner officers began to pursue the vehicle.

The driver turned around near 175th Street and sped off southbound on Interstate 35 around 12:10 Wednesday morning. Officers reported the SUV was driving erratically with speeds between 60 and 70 miles-per-hour as they continued in pursuit.

Master Deputy Jill Koch of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office says, "Gardner officers observed continuous erratic behavior that posed a great risk to public safety. Repeated attempts to stop the vehicle were unsuccessful."

The driver of the 1996 Toyota 4Runner then exited at Homestead Lane and continued northbound onto the property of BNSF Railway's Logistics Park Kansas City Intermodal Facility at 32880 West 191st Street.

The pursuit then left the Intermodal Facility, returned southbound on Homestead Lane and then westbound on 199th Street.

Gardner Police continued in pursuit as Sheriff's Deputies tried to get in front of the pursuit from the west side of Edgerton. Deputies were trying to get into position to use spike strips on the suspect vehicle's tires.

The suspect vehicle crashed near Mildale Farms at 35250 West 199th Street just after 12:15 a.m.. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Gardner officers reported the driver had been ejected from the vehicle and immediately requested Med-Act to respond.

Johnson County Fire District No. 1 and Johnson County Med-Act were dispatched and arrived in less than five minutes. The first fire unit to arrive at the crash scene reported the car was off of the road and on its side.

Master Deputy Koch confirmed in a news release on Wednesday, that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

A news release on Friday identified the driver as Arthur Lee Wright, 65, of Kansas City, Kansas.

The pursuit covered about 10 miles in just under 10 minutes.

COURT UPDATE: Suspects in November 2014 carjacking in Shawnee

Court update:

Johnson County court records show the now 18-year-old lived in the Cottonwood Park Apartments in Shawnee and was a suspect passenger in a November 2014 carjacking. In January 2015, he pled guilty to a reduced charge of felony burglary and received a two and a half year sentence for his role in the November 2014 carjacking. According to court records prosecutors dropped the charge of attempted kidnapping against him. Operation 100 News does not release the names of juvenile offenders.

The second suspect, a now 18-year-old Olathe resident, Madio Torrence Bayha remains in custody at the Johnson County Sheriff's Office Adult Detention Center. Court records show Bayha is being tried as an adult. He faces charges of aggravated robbery, kidnapping, recklessly fleeing a law enforcement officer, and battery of a corrections/detention officer. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 9, 2016.

Accident report: November 16, 2014

Operation 100 News has obtained a copy of the Shawnee Police Department's accident report from the November 6th vehicle pursuit and suspect vehicle crash near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Kansas Highway 7.

The six page accident report

The report identifies the driver as a 17-year-old from Olathe, and the passenger as a 17-year-old Shawnee resident. The passenger is listed as resident of an apartment complex two blocks from the Hy-Vee store where the carjacking occurred.

Operation 100 News has chosen to withhold the names of the two juveniles alleged in this case.

Included in the accident report is an illustration (shown below) of the vehicle's path and estimated speeds.

The crash narrative states that the vehicle was traveling westbound, at high speed, on 67th Street, where the driver began braking towards the west end of the Kansas Highway 7 bridge.

"The vehicle skidded several hundred feet before going off road left," the report says.

After leaving the road the car struck a KDOT owned exit sign, a ditch and then went airborne. While airborne, the car struck the top of a KDOT owned fence and rolled over twice, coming back to land on its wheels on the Nachbar Automotive property, 6801 Hedge Lane Terrace.

Officers say all of the vehicle's airbags had deployed.

"It is unknown where [passenger name] was in the vehicle when the crash occurred. He was found in the back seat when [officer name] approached the vehicle," according to the accident report.

The owner of Nachbar Automotive estimates damage done to his property to be $2,000. This includes damage to landscaping and damage to vehicles from crash debris that landed on vehicles in his parking lot.

The report concludes with a list of seven suggested charges, related to only the crash. Those charges do not include the initial carjacking incident at Hy-Vee. Suggested charges include: felony fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, no driver's license, speed too fast for conditions, improper driving, violations of traffic control signals, and reckless criminal damage to property.

Johnson County court records show both juveniles have been charged with aggravated robbery and attempted kidnapping. The driver has also been charged with fleeing a law enforcement officer.

Original Report: November 6, 2014

Shawnee Police are investigating an armed carjacking that occurred in the parking lot of the Shawnee Hy-Vee late Wednesday, November 5th.

Officers were called to the Hy-Vee store, 13550 West 63rd Street, at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday. The victim, a 64-year-old man from Shawnee, told officers that his gray 2010 Honda Accord was stolen by two, younger black men wearing hooded sweatshirts.

The victim said one of the men had a weapon, according to Maj. Dan Tennis of the Shawnee Police Department, but wasn't sure what it was. Tennis said the victim had been shopping at the Hy-Vee, had loaded his groceries into his car and was putting his shopping cart away when he was approached by the suspects. Tennis said the two suspects are 17-years-old.

"They demanded his vehicle keys, phone, wallet and told him to get in the car as well," Tennis said

Tennis said the victim instead ran inside the Hy-Vee where he asked for help and dialed 911. He was not injured.

A Shawnee officer then spotted the stolen Accord, westbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway near Barker Road. The officer attempted to stop the suspects and after initially slowing, the suspects accelerated to nearly 100 miles-per-hour and sped through red lights at Monticello Road and Hilltop Road with officers in pursuit, according to Tennis.

"Due to the high speeds, the car driving without headlights and running red lights, our officer stopped the chase," Tennis said.

Officers lost sight of the car near Kansas Highway 7, according to police. The officer that was leading the pursuit reported that they might have gone south on Kansas Highway 7. The pursuit was called off at 12:06 Thursday morning.

About 20 minutes later, Tennis said, the vehicle was located, wrecked, with the two juvenile suspects still inside.

The crash scene was on the property of Nachbar Automotive, 6801 Hedge Lane Terrace, just west of Kansas Highway 7. The vehicle crashed through a ditch, and a barbed wire highway fence.

Johnson County Med-Act transported both suspects from the crash scene, one with serious injuries. The crash scene was six-and-a-half miles from the Hy-Vee store where the carjacking occurred.

Tennis said the Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit was called out to investigate the crash. One of the juveniles was released from the hospital at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday and was transported by Shawnee Police to the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center in Olathe.
