One person killed in fiery western Lenexa crash

The Lenexa Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is investigating after one person was killed in a fiery crash on Prairie Star Parkway late Wednesday evening.

It happened about 9:15 p.m. in the median of Prairie Star Parkway just east of Tallgrass Drive in western Lenexa.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez says officers arrived to find the car engulfed in flames.

Lenexa firefighters worked for about five minutes to extinguish the flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. An extensive search of the immediate area was conducted to ensure no one had been ejected from the car. No one was located in the search.

Police believe the car was driving westbound at high speed when it left the road.

"[The car] left the roadway into the center median and struck large landscaping boulders," Ofc. Chavez said. "We don't have any info on the deceased yet."

The crash forced officers to close Prairie Star Parkway in both directions between Lone Elm Road and Prairie Creek Road for several hours.

Merriam and Overland Park fire crews are investigating after an electrical fire forced more than 20 people from their apartments late Monday.

Firefighters were called to the Georgetown Apartments in the 7100 block of Eby Drive just before 10 p.m.. Arriving firefighters reported a fire in an electrical panel in the basement of the two story apartment building.

Overland Park Fire's media manager Jason Rhodes says crews were able to knock down the fire with extinguishers, but because of the electricity, were unable to offensively fight the fire.

KCP&L arrived around 11:30 p.m. and cut power to the building.

After power was cut, firefighters were able to quickly knock the fire down and declared the fire under control about 11:50 p.m..

Rhodes says, "Firefighters did rescue a number of animals from the building. It's believed that 16 units are currently displaced and apartment management is working to relocate residents."

During the fire, power was turned off to the entire apartment complex. KCP&L is working to restore power to the other buildings in the complex, while leaving power off at the fire building.

No injuries were reported.

105-year-old woman rescued from Leavenworth County house fire

Firefighters in Tonganoxie rescued an elderly woman from her burning home just before 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Crews were called to the home at 116 East Sixth Street around 4:50 a.m..

Police arrived on the scene to report heavy smoke coming from the roof of the single story home. A family member, who lives next door, told officers that there was an elderly female in a front bedroom who was unable able to make it out on her own.

Firefighters arrived to report the fire was just inside the front door. After about five minutes, firefighters reported that the woman had been rescued from the structure and was with an EMS unit that was standing by at the scene.

Operation 100 has learned that the female is 105-years-old and she was transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

A second EMS unit has been called to the scene to standby as firefighters work to extinguish the fire.

No one else was injured.

Firefighters from three area departments were called to respond on a house fire in western Shawnee just before noon Thursday.

A 911 caller reported a house fire at 22520 W. 75th Street, located at 75th Street and McCoy Street or about one-quarter of a mile east of K-7.




Shawnee firefighters reported "flames rolling" out of the home and immediately requested a second-alarm response. Most of that response was canceled prior to arriving on the scene.

The blaze was brought under control in about 15 minutes and was declared to be out after approximately 35 minutes.

Operation 100 News was on the scene as firefighters finished putting the fire out.

Fire crews from the Lenexa Fire Department and Olathe Fire Department also responded on the call.

Two cats were reported to be inside the house when the fire broke out. Firefighters reported locating but, being unable to catch both of those cats in the house.

Shawnee Fire officials say the fire is believed to have started in the garage and spread rapidly. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.

VIDEO: Three injured in late night apartment fire

Firefighters credit smoke alarms for alerting four sleeping families of a fire in their apartment building late last night.

Officials say the fire was reported around 11:30 Thursday night at 1304 E. 123rd Terrace, just east of N. Ridgeview Road.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy fire and thick black smoke showing from the back of the two story apartment building.

Crews reported the fire to be under control shortly before midnight. The fire was said to be fully extinguished by 1:52 Friday morning.

A man and a woman were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. A second woman, also suffering from smoke inhalation, was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Her condition is said to be non life-threatening.

Two dogs were killed in the fire.

No other injuries were reported.

The Red Cross is assisting all 11 people who were displaced by the fire.

The fire caused substantial damage to the building. Fire inspectors are investigating what sparked the fire and a damage estimate was not immediately available. Firefighters remain at the scene this morning to watch for hot spots and assist fire investigators.

Olathe firefighters were assisted on the scene by the Lenexa Fire Department, Olathe Police Department and Johnson County Med-Act.

Early morning fire heavily damages Olathe home

Olathe firefighters were called to 16100 W. 144th Street just before 4 a.m. Wednesday.

A neighbor alerted crews of the fire when she spotted the flames while looking out of her window. Crews arrived, at 4:02 a.m., to find the fire had burnt through the home's roof.

Neighbors informed firefighters that the home is undergoing renovations following a foreclosure and no one was living there. Fire crews also reported that there were no vehicles in the home's driveway or garage.

Firefighters battled flames from outside the home for about 20 minutes before going inside the structure.

The fire was reported to be under control at 4:44 a.m.. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.

Video: Overland Park restaurant fire

Firefighters from Overland Park and Leawood were called to the Joy Wok restaurant at 11920 Metcalf Avenue just before 4:50 Sunday morning.

Two callers are said to have reported the fire, the first an employee of a neighboring business reported smoke visible from the roof. The second caller reported a burning odor in the area.

Overland Park Police arrived to report smoke from the roof of the building. Firefighters made access to the building and found fire in the kitchen area.

Overland Park Fire Department spokesperson Jason Rhodes says, crews quickly extinguished the fire which covered about 25% of the kitchen. The fire was placed under control in about 20 minutes and was contained to the kitchen area.

No one was inside the restaurant at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Dryer fire forces partial evacuation of Shawnee assisted living facility

An early morning dryer fire forced the partial evacuation of an assisted living facility in Shawnee.

Firefighters from Shawnee and Lenexa were called to Shawnee Heartland Assisted Living, 16207 Midland Drive, shortly after 1:30 Saturday morning.

Arriving firefighters reported light smoke inside the building upon their arrival. Three Johnson County Med-Act ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

Radio traffic indicates that around 20 residents were evacuated from their rooms to the waiting ambulances and other wings of the building that were clear of smoke.

Shawnee Fire Marshal Corey Sands tells Operation 100 News that there was a dryer fire. One fire sprinkler head activated and extinguished the fire. No one was injured.

All residents were allowed to return to their rooms before 2:15 a.m..

Several animals killed in De Soto house fire

Northwest Consolidated Fire District crews are battling a house fire in De Soto this morning. The structure is a single wide trailer home at 8820 Waverly Road.

Crews were called to the scene around 2:10, Wednesday morning after a resident reported a fire under the home.

A Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy arrived to report that the residents were making their way out of the structure and smoke was visible.

Firefighters arrived to report a working fire on the rear side of the structure. Crews began an interior attack but, were forced to evacuate after conditions inside deteriorated.

A Safety Officer reported that there was fire visibly "blowing through" three or four windows on the rear side and the fire appeared to extend the entire length of the structure. Crews began defensive operations from the exterior of the home.

Residents reported that their pets were believed to still be inside the structure.

The Lenexa Fire Department has one fire crew and a Battalion Chief at the scene assisting with fighting the fire. One Olathe Fire Department crew is standing by at Northwest Consolidated Fire District Station 1 for coverage of the area.

The fire was declared to be under control at 3:20 a.m.. An official cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Authorities say the Red Cross will be assisting the three adult residents. The structure has been declared a total loss. Several animals died in the fire including; a bird, dog and a snake. A cat remains unaccounted for. The homeowner is said to be a veterinarian.

Local Fire Departments promoting safe holiday cooking practices this Thanksgiving

Area Fire Departments are reminding residents to use caution when cooking this Thanksgiving.

The National Fire Protection Association says that Thanksgiving Day remains the number one day for home cooking fires in the United States. Home cooking fires peak on major holidays that traditionally include Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Deep fried turkeys are a popular Thanksgiving treat but, outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers create serious safety concerns:

• Hot oil may spill onto the open burner and create fire - Some fryers has as much as 35 quarts of oil.
• Cooking oil may be heated beyond its cooking temperatures and the vapors can ignite.
• The fryer can easily tip over and spill hot, scalding oil onto anyone or anything nearby.
• The fryer's sides, lids and handles get extremely hot and can cause severe burns.

The Olathe Fire Department provided this video which shows a partially frozen turkey being placed in a propane-fueled fryer and the ensuing reaction of hot oil bubbling out of the fryer and onto the burner. The Fire Department says the spilled oil is hot enough to cause third degree burns in less than one second.

The Underwriters Laboratory Inc., a global product safety testing and certification source with more than a century of experience, does not certify any turkey fryer with the trusted UL mark.

Olathe Fire Captain and Fire Education Association of Kansas President Mike Hall says, "Help ensure a safer Thanksgiving holiday by leaving deep fried turkeys to the culinary professionals."

Firefighters make quick work of JoCo house fire

Firefighters made quick work of a De Soto house fire.

Dispatchers say the call was dispatched just before 6:30 a.m. when they received a call from a resident.

Firefighters from Northwest Consolidated Fire District arrived on the scene to report nothing showing from the single story home at 8155 Wea Street.

Crews located a working fire in the home's attic at 6:38 a.m. and reported that fire to be under control at 6:48 a.m..

One crew from the Lenexa Fire Department responded to the scene to assist with the incident.

The American Red Cross has been requested to assist three adults and four children who were displaced by the fire.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters rescue cat from early-morning fire

Lawrence Fire crews were dispatched on report of smoke alarms sounding at 312 Bowstring Drive at 5:46 Monday morning. The address is just north of the intersection of Lawrence Avenue and Princeton Boulevard.

A caller to 911 reported visible smoke inside the residence. Police arrived at the scene to report flames visible from the south side of the home. Firefighters reported flames showing from the second floor of a two story, single family residence.

A statement released Monday afternoon says all occupants evacuated the structure prior to Fire Department arrival. The fire was quickly extinguished and an all clear under control was declared at 6:11 a.m..

Officials say one cat was rescued, however an additional cat succumbed from the conditions of the incident.

The Douglas County Chapter of the American Red Cross has been contacted to provide assistance for the displaced occupants.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and damage estimates are not yet available.

No injuries were reported.

Vacant house fire causes heavy damage and injures firefighter

Firefighters were called to an address in the 221 S Central Street in Olathe around 4:40 Tuesday morning.

Olathe Police arrived to find fire visible inside the home. A neighbor told officers that the previous resident had been evicted and no one is believed to be living at the address.

Responding firefighters reported smoke visible from Santa Fe Street (135th Street) and Interstate 35, approximately a third of a mile away. The first fire unit to arrive at the address reported the attached garage of the single story home was fully involved with flames visible through the roof.

Firefighters have conducted a primary and secondary search of the home and confirmed that there is no one inside.

Dispatchers confirm, the fire was declared "under control" at 5:06 a.m..

Olathe Fire officials confirm one firefighter was transported to an area hospital with a back injury. That injury is said to be non life-threatening. Officials say the fire appears to have sparked when the furnace's natural gas  line broke and was ignited by the water heater's pilot light. The fire caused approximately $80,000 in damages.

Firefighters were called back to the scene around 1:30 Tuesday morning afternoon. Dispatchers say that was a false alarm and the fire had not rekindled.

Early morning fire at popular JoCo watering hole

Lenexa firefighters were called to Jerry's Bait Shop, 13412 Santa Fe Trail Drive, shortly before 2:40 a.m., after employees reported an odor of smoke in the bar area on the first floor. One fire unit was dispatched to investigate the source of the odor. By 2:45 a.m., that fire crew ordered a full alarm response for a building fire, after locating heavy smoke on the second floor.

Several other Lenexa Fire units along with one from the Overland Park Fire Department, responded to assist on the call. Units on scene reported fire visible from the exterior sides of the building.

The fire was reportedly knocked down within about 15 minutes. Interior crews also reported several soft spots in the floor and advised all units to use caution in the fire room. The fire was confirmed to be under control at 3:25 a.m..

No injuries have been reported. Johnson County Med-Act is standing by at the scene and assisting in keeping firefighters hydrated.

Lenexa Police say the upstairs of the address is a single apartment and an office area. The resident of the apartment was asleep inside when she was contacted by bar employees who told her to evacuate.

Lenexa Firefighters say they believe the fire started in the upstairs office. Smoke from that fire alerted bar employees to the fire. Those employees contacted the upstairs resident. Firefighters say the apartment and the bar both sustained minor damage.

Crews report smoke and water damage to the first floor of the building and have requested a response from Johnson County Health officials.

The Shawnee Fire Department had one unit assigned to fill-in at Lenexa Fire station one, until off-duty personnel was able to staff the reserve apparatus and standby at that station. The Shawnee crew was allowed to return to Shawnee around 4 a.m..

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials have not released a damage estimate at this time.

Fully involved duplex fire in Overland Park

Firefighters were called to an address in the 10700 block of W 90th Terrace around 3:10 a.m. after a caller reported that the other half of her duplex was on fire. Overland Park Police arrived on scene to report that half of the duplex was "fully engulfed". An approaching fire crew reported seeing heavy fire from half a block away.

The caller to 911 reported that they were unsure if anyone was home in the side of the duplex that was on fire. Police say that a neighbor told them the resident's vehicle is not parked at the address.

Crews quickly pulled attack lines and began working on knocking the fire down. Another fire crew entered the neighboring side of the duplex to check for possible extension.

The fire was reported to be under control at 3:53 a.m.. Crews inside the duplex also reported a weak floor and a hole in the floor on the second level of the fire duplex. The neighboring duplex was checked and confirmed to be all clear of fire.

Police confirm to Operation 100 News that Officers have contacted the resident of the duplex that is on fire and report that no one was home this morning.

The Overland Park Fire Department is being assisted by one crew from the Lenexa Fire Department and Johnson County Med-Act.

No injuries have been reported.

Firefighters report heavy fire showing from Olathe house

Crews from Olathe and Lenexa are on the scene of a house fire at 561 E 126th Terrace in Olathe. First arriving crews reported heavy smoke showing and then spotted flames visible on the rear of the two story home. The fire was reported shortly before 9:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Upon further investigation, Firefighters reported a rear porch was "fully involved" with fire. The fire also spread to the second floor and attic. Those firefighters also reported a downed power line in the backyard. A second-alarm was added to the call at 10 minutes into the incident.

A Battalion Chief on the scene sent a crew to ventilate the roof while another attacked the fire from the inside. As soon as the vent hole was cut into the roof, fire poured from inside.

The fire was declared to be under control at 10:01 a.m.. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available.

Firefighters from the Shawnee and Overland Park Fire Departments, along with Johnson County Fire District No. 2 are filling in at Olathe fire stations currently.

$75,000 in damages to Lawrence home following fire

Update: Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, Chief Mark Bradford tells my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World, that damage is estimated at $75,000. Investigators determined that the fire was accidental and caused by landscaping mulch covering an in-ground lighting source. The fire extended to inside the house, where crews found fire in lower level utility and storage area. (Link)

Lawrence firefighters were called to an address in the 1700 block of Lake Alvamar Drive around 4:10 a.m. Saturday. Lawrence Journal-World story.

Initial reports from the resident were of a small fire in the basement utility closet of the two story house. Police confirmed that all occupants of the house were safely outside. Officers also reported visible flames at the bottom of the basement stairs.

Upon arrival and preliminary investigation, fire crews confirmed that there was a working fire in the basement. A second alarm response was added to the incident for additional manpower. Firefighters outside of the home reported fire visible on an exterior corner with extension into some landscaping material. The fire inside and outside was quickly knocked down and later was declared to be out, about 30 minutes after crews arrived on the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and a damage estimate has not been released. No injuries were reported.

Fire reported at Overland Park home

Overland Park and Lenexa Firefighters are on scene of a house fire in the 10500 block of W 92nd Place.

Firefighters were dispatched at 8:20 a.m. for a reported fire in the laundry room of the house. Upon arrival crews reported heavy smoke from two sides of the split level home.

Further investigation led fire crews to a fire in a basement wall with extension to a first floor kitchen closet. Crews are also making access to the attic to check for extension. Crews were able to confirm, with the homeowner, that everyone was evacuated safely.

No other details were immediately available and no injuries have been reported.

This is the second fire that Overland Park and Lenexa firefighters have responded on this morning. The first fire was reported around 6:40 a.m., more information on that fire can be found here.

Fire reported at Lenexa apartment complex

Lenexa Firefighters extinguished a small fire in the attic of an apartment building in the 9500 block of Monrovia Street. Initial reports were of smoke in the area. One fire crew responded to the area with police and found light smoke visible from the roof of one building.

That building was quickly evacuated and a small fire was found in the attic of a second floor apartment. A full alarm response was ordered to assist with evacuations of the building. 

Officials say they pulled ceilings in several apartments to confirm that the fire was completely extinguished.

Firefighters from the Overland Park Fire Department were also called and assisted with the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available. No injuries were reported.

Grease fire causes $15,000 worth of damages to assisted living facility

The Olathe Fire Department was called to Aberdeen Village Assisted Living and Retirement Center at 3:20 p.m. Thursday. A 911 call reported a fire in the first level kitchen area. The facility is located at 17500 W 119th Street in Olathe.

Firefighters and Olathe Police assisted in evacuations of some of the residents. Crews ordered a second alarm response due to the size of the facility and the number of residents who live on the site.

The fire is said to have been contained to the kitchen area and was extinguished by the building's sprinkler system before fire crews arrived. Crews checked attic spaces and reported that the fire had not spread into the attic or the building's roof. 


Firefighters from the Lenexa Fire Department responded on the second alarm to assist with the call.

Investigators say the fire was a grease fire and started in the facility's commercial kitchen. Damage is estimated at $15,000. No injuries were reported.
