PHOTOS: Police rescue one, evacuate others from Thursday morning apartment fire

Overland Park Police rescued one person and evacuated several others after a fire broke out in the Perry 81 Apartments on Thursday morning. Emergency crews were called to the building at 8025 Perry Street at 7:55 a.m.

"First fire units on the scene reported heavy smoke showing from the two-story apartment building with Overland Park Police effecting rescues and evacuations," said Jason Rhodes, Media Manager for the Overland Park Fire Department.

The fire is believed to have started in a second-floor unit and then spread to the building's attic.

Firefighters from Lenexa and Shawnee were called in to assist as part of a second-alarm assignment.

"It took crews over an hour to bring the fire under control as firefighters had to dig out deep-seated fire in the attic void spaces and chimney areas," Rhodes said. "Overland Park Police bravely assisted with a rescue and evacuations."
Firefighters rescued a dog from one apartment. No injuries were reported.

Residents from 10 apartments have been displaced and are working with apartment management to find housing.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and a damage estimate has not been released.

A second-floor apartment left heavily damaged by the fire.

Two-alarm house fire in Lawrence

Lawrence firefighters are on the scene of a house fire in the 1400 block of Kentucky Street.

The call was dispatched at 4:15 a.m. after dispatchers received a 911 call reporting the front porch of the home was on fire. A second 911 caller reported the entire front of the home was on fire.

Residents of the home, said to be three college students, were alerted by a passerby that their front porch was on fire.

Arriving fire crews reported fire visible on the front of the three story structure. Interior crews found that the fire had spread into a third floor wall and to the attic space.

All residents of the home were able to get out before emergency crews arrived.

The incident commander requested a second alarm to the scene for additional firefighters and equipment at 4:20 a.m..

An additional aerial apparatus was dispatched to the scene shortly after 5 a.m. as crews on the scene backed out of the structure to put water on the fire from the outside only.

Firefighters went back into the structure around 6:30 a.m. to continue hitting hot spots.

No injuries have been reported.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical has also requested an emergency callback for off-duty personnel to fill several Lawrence fire stations and reserve apparatus.

Firefighters from three area departments were called to respond on a house fire in western Shawnee just before noon Thursday.

A 911 caller reported a house fire at 22520 W. 75th Street, located at 75th Street and McCoy Street or about one-quarter of a mile east of K-7.




Shawnee firefighters reported "flames rolling" out of the home and immediately requested a second-alarm response. Most of that response was canceled prior to arriving on the scene.

The blaze was brought under control in about 15 minutes and was declared to be out after approximately 35 minutes.

Operation 100 News was on the scene as firefighters finished putting the fire out.

Fire crews from the Lenexa Fire Department and Olathe Fire Department also responded on the call.

Two cats were reported to be inside the house when the fire broke out. Firefighters reported locating but, being unable to catch both of those cats in the house.

Shawnee Fire officials say the fire is believed to have started in the garage and spread rapidly. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.

VIDEO: Late night two-alarm house fire in Olathe

Firefighters from three area departments responded on a late night fire in Olathe.

The fire was initially dispatched shortly before 11:30 p.m. Sunday. First fire crews found heavy fire visible from the single story home at 12914 S. Pflumm Road. The incident was upgraded to a second alarm at 11:42 p.m..

Crews were forced to battle the fire from the exterior at one point. They were able to reenter the structure a short time later.

The fire was declared to be under control at 12:40 a.m..

A man, woman, and one dog escaped the house safely. Officials say a second dog and one cat were found deceased after the fire was extinguished.

One person was said to have sustained minor injuries, that person was treated at the scene and refused any further medical treatment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

Firefighters from Overland Park and Lenexa also responded on the incident.

Pflumm Road was closed to all traffic as crews battled the fire. All lanes have since reopened.

Two-Alarm Apartment building fire in JoCo

Firefighters from Overland Park, Lenexa and Olathe are fighting an apartment building fire at 11449 W 107th Terrace at the Waterford Place Apartments. Dispatchers received a 911 call around 4:15 a.m. reporting that the building was on fire. Responding fire crews reported smoke visible from College Boulevard and US-69 Highway at 4:20 a.m..

The first fire crew arrived at 4:23 a.m. and reported heavy fire showing from the building which was 25-50% involved. A second alarm response was ordered at 4:27 a.m..

At 4:33 a.m., Incident Command reported that crews had conducted an evacuation of the involved building and reported all occupants were believed to be out. Command ordered all firefighters to evacuate from the building and began defensive operations using aerial trucks to put water on the fire.

The fire was declared to be "under control" at 6:07 a.m..

Officials say eight apartments have been heavily damaged by fire and water, others may have smoke and water damage. All of the residents safely evacuated from the building and only two requested housing assistance from the Red Cross. No injuries were reported.

Overland Park Firefighters returned to the scene shortly after 4 p.m., Sunday after a nearby resident reported smoke from the building. Firefighters reported a small rekindle from the rear soffit of the building.

$75,000 in damages to Lawrence home following fire

Update: Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, Chief Mark Bradford tells my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World, that damage is estimated at $75,000. Investigators determined that the fire was accidental and caused by landscaping mulch covering an in-ground lighting source. The fire extended to inside the house, where crews found fire in lower level utility and storage area. (Link)

Lawrence firefighters were called to an address in the 1700 block of Lake Alvamar Drive around 4:10 a.m. Saturday. Lawrence Journal-World story.

Initial reports from the resident were of a small fire in the basement utility closet of the two story house. Police confirmed that all occupants of the house were safely outside. Officers also reported visible flames at the bottom of the basement stairs.

Upon arrival and preliminary investigation, fire crews confirmed that there was a working fire in the basement. A second alarm response was added to the incident for additional manpower. Firefighters outside of the home reported fire visible on an exterior corner with extension into some landscaping material. The fire inside and outside was quickly knocked down and later was declared to be out, about 30 minutes after crews arrived on the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and a damage estimate has not been released. No injuries were reported.

2-Alarm Hotel fire in Olathe

Just after 12:45 a.m., Olathe Firefighters were dispatched to the Econo Lodge South, located at 209 E Flaming Road. The hotel is located just southwest of Old 56 Highway and S Harrison Street.

Upon arrival crews reported that nothing was visible from the exterior of the two-story hotel, however when entered the building and quickly found heavy smoke. The fire was reported to have been contained to a laundry room and believed to have started as a dryer fire.

A second alarm was requested to assist with evacuations and check for possible extension to neighboring rooms.

Firefighters reported the fire under control just before 1 a.m., no injuries were reported. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

2-Alarm apartment building fire in Shawnee

Just after 8:20 p.m., Shawnee firefighters were called to investigate reports of an apartment building fire at building 7606-7608 Goddard Street, Fox Run Apartments.

As fire crews began to arrive in the area, they reported smoke was visible. Once crews reached the building, inside the apartment complex, smoke was visible from the two story apartment building. A short time later, those same crews reported fire was now showing through the roof.

A 2nd-Alarm response was requested just before 8:45 p.m.

Shawnee Fire Department, Fire Prevention Officer, Corey Sands, says Firefighters rescued two people from second floor balconies using ground ladders. Both people were reported to have minor injuries, they were treated on the scene and released. No other injuries were reported.



Sands also says residents of 24 units were displaced by the fire. 12 of those units sustained significant damaged in the blaze. The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage is now estimated at $750,000.

Firefighters from Merriam, Overland Park and Lenexa assisted Shawnee Fire on the scene. The Johnson County Emergency Communications Center Mobile Command Post also responded to the scene.

Two fire crews remained on the scene until around 4:30 a.m., extinguishing hot spots.

Investigators will return to the site this morning to continue the investigation.

Two alarm Shawnee house fire

At 1:28 a.m. Sunday morning, Shawnee Fire units were called to investigate a deck fire which was reported to be spreading to the rear of the house at 13872 West 58th Terrace in the Lakeview Estates subdivision. The Merriam Fire Department was also dispatched to assist.

Responding fire crews reported fire showing from the intersection of Johnson Drive and Widmer Drive, approximately 200 yards south of the fire scene. This report was made at 1:33 a.m..

Crews arrived on scene about a minute later and reported heavy fire visible from the rear side of the house. Upon entry into the home, crews reported that the fire had spread into the attic space.

At 1:50 a.m., Incident Command requested a second alarm response to the scene. An additional fire crew from Shawnee Fire as well as crews from Merriam and Lenexa were then added to the alarm.

Interior fire crews reported having issues with water pressure, as a result, those crews were evacuated until the issue could be fixed. While those crews were outside of the structure, Johnson County's Water One was able to boost water pressure to a nearby fire hydrant. Incident Command reported that the issue was handled and interior crews were allowed back inside.

As of 3:03 a.m., crews have reported the fire to be under control. One resident was treated for what were only described as "slight burns to the hands." No one was transported by Med-Act from the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A damage estimate has not been made available as of this report.

Two alarm Olathe house fire

Around 3:00 p.m., Saturday, the Olathe Fire Department was called to a house in the 1400 block of E Cambridge Street after the resident reported flames from the furnace vent on the first floor.

Fire crews arrived on scene about two minutes after being dispatched. First arriving crews reported smoke showing from the eaves of the house. A short time later, crews reported a fire in the basement.

A second alarm assignment was dispatched at 3:15 p.m., by request of the Battalion Chief on the scene. Interior crews reported a "weak floor" in the rear of the structure. Incident Command was able to report the fire as under control about 25 minutes after the first crews arrived. The Lenexa Fire Department also assisted in battling the blaze.

The house was evacuated when the Fire Department arrived and no injuries were reported. An official cause of the fire remains under investigation. An Olathe Fire spokesperson estimates damage at approximately $50,000. Investigators also say that the two residents of the home were first alerted to the fire by working smoke detectors in the house.

Spring Hill house fire, October 29th

Firefighters from Fire District No. 2 of Johnson County were called to the 200 block of N Main Street just minutes after 10 a.m..

Responding crews immediately advised that they were seeing heavy smoke from a distance. A responding Battalion Chief quickly added a Second Alarm assignment to the call, even before anyone had arrived on scene.

As Fire Crews arrived at the scene they found heavy fire showing on the rear of the house and also received reports of a car on fire in the garage. Upon further inspection the Battalion Chief called off the Second Alarm assignment.

The Olathe Fire Department along with Johnson County Fire District No. 1 assisted on the fire.

As of 10:30 a.m. crews were still battling the blaze. Firefighters are also chasing small grass fires that are slowly moving towards an Industrial area near the residence. No injuries have been reported.

Olathe 4-Alarm building fire

Olathe Fire investigators say "electrical issues" were responsible for the four alarm blaze Thursday morning. Investigators also confirm that one person was treated for minor smoke inhalation, no other injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $350,000.

Fire crews from Olathe, Lenexa, Overland Park, Shawnee, Leawood and Johnson County District #2 all battled a fire at an Olathe Days Inn, 211 N Rawhide Drive. Johnson County Med-Act also had several units involved on the call along with Olathe Police. One Lenexa Police officer was also involved in the opening minutes of the fire assisting with evacuations, as that officer reported seeing the smoke from Interstate 35.

Dispatchers tell Operation 100 News they received more than 5 emergency calls regarding the fire. Crews approaching the scene advised that heavy smoke was visible.

A second alarm was ordered almost immediately as crews arrived on the scene just before 9:20 a.m. Approximately 10 a.m. the fire had a Third Alarm response added to the incident a Fourth Alarm was added at 10:20 a.m. Incident Command declared the fire to be Under Control at 10:41 a.m. and then declared the fire to be out at 10:47 a.m.

The Salvation Army responded to the scene to assist in hydrating/feeding firefighters and displaced residents.

A caller on the scene tells me, a hotel employee was treated by a Johnson County Med-Act unit and it appeared to be related to smoke inhalation or possibly an asthma attack. That injury was described as minor and no one has been transported from the scene.

Fire crews searched room to room confirming that all occupants were out. Flames did make their way through the roof at one point. Crews were able to contain the fire at a fire wall and were chasing the fire through several pipe runs and below bathtubs in interior walls of the building.

A source familiar with the incident tells me by phone that approximately 23 of the buildings 64 rooms were occupied last night. Numerous people were evacuated by Police and Fire crews as they were arriving at the scene.

Two alarm residential structure fire, Lawrence

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews were called to a structure fire at 1300 block of Tennessee Street, shortly after 6:10 Sunday morning. Upon arrival crews reported heavy fire involvement. Crews were able to make entry into the three story structure and search the first two floors to confirm that all occupants were out. Upon reaching the third floor, crews were confronted by heavy fire.

Just after 6:20 a.m. Fire Command requested a 2nd Alarm response to the scene to assist. Crews were ordered to evacuate the structure at 6:30 a.m. due to rapidly spreading fire in the attic area. All crews inside the structure safely evacuated and began fighting the fire defensively.

Scanner reports indicate that at least one neighboring structure has also been evacuated as a precaution.

Police and Fire crews say that all 10 occupants are accounted for at this time. One resident was treated on scene for minor smoke inhalation. No other injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
