Off-duty police officer killed in Wednesday morning crash

Update:

Lawrence Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed early Wednesday evening that the man killed in this morning's accident was an off-duty Lawrence police officer.

Troopers say Officer Matthew Edward Klock, 29, was killed when his 2012 Nissan Altima collided with a pole near W. 6th Street and Wakarusa Drive.

The Kansas Highway Patrol crash log of the incident says that Klock's vehicle was eastbound on the inside lane of 6th Street, when the vehicle went left of center and struck a light pole on the east side of the intersection with Wakarusa Drive. Klock was not wearing a seat belt. Troopers continue to investigate what, if any, role alcohol or slick roads may have played in the accident's cause.

Klock joined the Lawrence Police Department in 2007.

Lawrence Police Sergeant Trent McKinley told 6 News Lawrence that "a member of the force drove to Derby, Kansas, where Klock grew up, to personally notify family members this morning."

Lawrence Police are investigating this morning after one person was fatally injured in an apparent single vehicle accident.

Officers were initially dispatched on a non-injury accident at the intersection of W. 6th Street and Wakarusa Drive just after 2:15 Wednesday morning.

On arrival at 2:20 a.m., officers reported the lone occupant of the vehicle was unconscious. Medics were immediately dispatched to the scene and upon their arrival reported one vehicle with "major damage".

The occupant was initially said to be in critical condition as of 2:30 a.m.. Medics pronounced the person to be deceased at the scene, just before 2:40 a.m..

Police have shutdown the intersection completely as they investigate the accident.

Very few details were immediately available. It remains unclear what the vehicle struck.

One person shot outside Lawrence night club

Updated Story: March 17, 2012 As of 11:00 a.m., Lawrence Police confirm to Operation 100 News' reporting partners at LJWorld.com that one person was arrested early Saturday morning in connection with this shooting.

The Journal-World reports that the shooting occurred at the Taste Lounge, Bar and Grill, located at 804 W 24th Street around 1:30 a.m..

Douglas County Jail booking logs show a 20-year-old Topeka man was arrested at the same location as the shooting, in the same time frame, in the same location as the shooting. The man who has been arrested is facing charges of aggravated battery, possession of controlled substance and possession of stolen property. Bond has not currently been set.

The Journal-World also reports that this morning's shooting is the third firearms-related incident near the Taste  Lounge, Bar and Grill since October. On December 9th, a Lawrence man was arrested for firing a weapon from a vehicle near the establishment. Two Leavenworth men were arrested for a shooting incident that occurred at the same location on October 9th.

Lawrence Police are investigating after a 30-year-old, Lawrence man was shot in the 800 block of W 24th Street early Saturday morning.

Police tell my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World, the shooting occurred between 1:30 and 2 a.m. Saturday morning. Captain Bill Cory says the victim was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by a bystander at the scene. The victim's injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

Officers continue investigating the incident and have apprehended two suspects for questioning, according to LJWorld.com. No arrests have been reported as of 4 a.m..

Earlier radio transmissions indicated that Officers had located a single casing at the scene of the shooting. A bystander was reported to have followed a believed suspect vehicle from the scene, that vehicle was stopped by Police a short time later. It was not clear if this vehicle was connected to the incident as the bystander believed.

The Lawrence Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in their investigation into the Sunday, November 6, 2011 injury accident around 2:11 a.m., at 19th Street and Iowa Street.

Police say the driver of a westbound vehicle on 19th Street is a possible witness to the accident and would like to talk with the driver for possible information regarding the accident.

Three being treated after overdosing

Lawrence Police say they are still investigating the incident that sent three people to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for suspected drug overdoses. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that at about 3:39 a.m., police were dispatched to the 3400 block of Scioto Drive for a medical emergency. When they arrived they found two 27-year-old Lawrence men and a 25-year-old Lawrence woman who were unresponsive according to police reports. All three were treated and have since been released from the hospital. Police are still investigating to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.

Lawrence Police are investigating a multiple overdose, involving three subjects in the 3400 block of Scioto Drive this morning. Police and Fire/Medical were dispatched just before 3:40a.m.

Police arrived and found three subjects, all unresponsive at the scene, reportedly from "recreational drug use."

Three medic units are were dispatched to the scene and all transported unresponsive patients away from the scene.

Initial reports indicate the subjects, two males and a female all in their "early 20's", used a mixture of illegal and prescription drugs with alcohol. Unconfirmed information indicates that the subjects consumed unknown amounts of "GHB, Ecstasy, Adderall and alcohol." Police are investigating.

Lawrence shots fired call results in 2 arrests

Two men have been arrested by Lawrence Police after a report of shots fired in the 800 block of W 24th Street at 12:31 a.m.. Police were informed that the shots were fired from a gray Cadillac. Witnesses were unable to tell officers if the shots were fired at a person, an object or fired randomly into the air.

Officers were able to locate a vehicle matching the description of the Cadillac witnesses reported seeing. The vehicle was spotted in the 1800 block of W 23rd Street. Numerous Lawrence Police Officers converged on the vehicle and conducted a felony stop. Two male occupants were taken into custody at gunpoint.

No injuries were reported related to the initial incident or the vehicle stop and arrest.

The men have now been booked into the Douglas County Jail and are awaiting arraignment on charges. Both men show to live in Leavenworth. The first man, a 21-year-old, is being without bond on charges of Criminal Discharge of a Firearm and Aggravated battery. The second man, a 19-year-old, is being held on a $2000 bond on a charge of Aiding a Felon.

Two alarm residential structure fire, Lawrence

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews were called to a structure fire at 1300 block of Tennessee Street, shortly after 6:10 Sunday morning. Upon arrival crews reported heavy fire involvement. Crews were able to make entry into the three story structure and search the first two floors to confirm that all occupants were out. Upon reaching the third floor, crews were confronted by heavy fire.

Just after 6:20 a.m. Fire Command requested a 2nd Alarm response to the scene to assist. Crews were ordered to evacuate the structure at 6:30 a.m. due to rapidly spreading fire in the attic area. All crews inside the structure safely evacuated and began fighting the fire defensively.

Scanner reports indicate that at least one neighboring structure has also been evacuated as a precaution.

Police and Fire crews say that all 10 occupants are accounted for at this time. One resident was treated on scene for minor smoke inhalation. No other injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
