Three injured in Massachusetts Street rollover crash

Three women were injured when the vehicle they were riding in crashed and rolled onto its top late Saturday night in Downtown Lawrence.

Lawrence Police and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews were called to the intersection of 13th Street and Massachusetts Street, just before midnight, where they found a vehicle on its roof.

Radio traffic from the scene indicates none of the injured women were wearing seatbelts and one of them was thrown out of the vehicle when it rolled over.

The women range in age from 17-20 years old. One was transported by ambulance to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The other two were transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are investigating the crash.

No other details were immediately available.

Man arrested after 120mph pursuit from Lawrence to KCK

One person was arrested early Sunday morning after a Lawrence police officer attempted to make a traffic stop in North Lawrence.

econd Street and North Street around 1:30 a.m. The driver of the car refused to stop and accelerated towards the turnpike.

Radio traffic indicates the pursuit went eastbound on Interstate 70 with speeds ranging from 75 to 120 miles per hour.

A Kansas Turnpike Authority Trooper was able to get stop sticks out in front of the suspect vehicle just before it reached Kansas Highway 7 in eastern Leavenworth County.

The Trooper told his dispatcher that he hit the driver’s side tires of the suspect vehicle with the stop sticks.

Radio traffic from the Lawrence officer who was chasing the vehicle stated that his patrol vehicle was also hit by the stop sticks and that speeds had decreased to only 75 miles per hour.

The suspect vehicle stopped about one mile east of the Kansas Highway 7 interchange in western Kansas City, Kansas about 1:45 a.m.

Troopers reported that the suspect driver was detained by Lawrence officers and no one else was inside the vehicle.

Radio traffic indicates the vehicle has expired registration and the suspect's driver's license is suspended. The vehicle was previously registered to the suspect.

Man arrested in Thursday morning pursuit was shot by police in 2014

UPDATED REPORT:
The man arrested after a Thursday morning car chase in Lawrence has been identified as a person shot by police in 2014.

According to my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World, Zachary James Ortiz, 28, was shot by Lawrence police in 2014 after pointing a shotgun at an officer.
In July 2016, he was sentenced to 19 months in state prison for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He was released from prison on August 3, 2017.

His arrest Thursday morning came after he failed to stop for an officer who witnessed a traffic violation in the 600 block of Massachusetts Street according to Lawrence police.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office booking logs show Ortiz was booked on suspicion of his third DUI, tampering with an ignition lock device, fleeing police, and interference with law enforcement.

One man was arrested after leading police on a pursuit which started in Downtown Lawrence early Thursday.

An officer tried to stop the black Honda Civic in the 700 block of New Hampshire Street just after 1:20 a.m., but the driver didn't stop.

Radio traffic indicates the suspect led officers west on Seventh Street, north on Massachusetts Street, and then west on Sixth Street.

Pursuing officers reported speeds between 30 and 35 miles per hour. Speeds reached 48 miles per hour briefly.

From Sixth Street the chase went north on Indiana, west on Fourth, and then north on Maine Street.

The suspect vehicle continued north on Maine Street, passing Second Street to the dead-end where the car hit a large rock and became high-centered.

Radio traffic from officers reported that they had the suspect at gunpoint still inside his vehicle. Officers pulled the man from his car and placed him under arrest.

Medics responded for the suspect who sustained minor injuries during his arrest. As of this report, the suspect remains in police custody while at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

The reason for the pursuit was not immediately known.

Lawrence Police investigating early-morning shooting

Lawrence Police now say that 33-year-old, Demetris Reese of Lawrence accidentally shot himself early Wednesday.

Sergeant Trent McKinley tells Operation 100 News reporting partners at the Journal-World that, "Reese was arrested on suspicion of criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon Wednesday after showing up at Lawrence Memorial Hospital around 3 a.m. with a gunshot wound to his leg."

Lawrence Police are investigating after a man with a gunshot wound showed up at Lawrence Memorial Hospital this morning.

Police were called to LMH by hospital staff at 3 a.m. after a man with a single gunshot wound to the leg arrived in the emergency room.

The victim told officers that the shooting occurred in the parking lot of Allstars Gentlemen's Club, 913 North 2nd Street in North Lawrence, around 1:45 a.m.

Lawrence Police are investigating the incident and are still trying to determine where the shooting occurred.

No suspect information or any other details have been released.

Four arrested after early-morning burglaries

Lawrence police arrested four people following several burglaries early Thursday.

Police were called to an address in the 3700 block of Stetson Drive shortly before 12:30 Thursday morning for a residential burglary in progress. The residents of the address was asleep inside the home when the suspects attempted to get in. One of the residents went downstairs to investigate the sounds and saw the silhouette of someone standing outside the kitchen window and called police, Lawrence Police Sgt. Trent McKinley tells my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World.

An arriving officer was involved in a brief foot chase with one of the suspects, who was found trying to hide in a vehicle. A second person was arrested just minutes later near the same vehicle.

While investigating officers found evidence suggesting that the suspects had damaged window screens and broken a basement window, all in attempt to get inside the home.

During a search of the vehicle, officers found items that belonged to the home next door. Police say the resident of that home awoke to her dog barking, when she went to investigate she saw a man standing in her living room. She screamed and the man ran off.

Officers searching the suspect vehicle also located a laptop that belonged to an address in the 300 block of Sharon Drive. Officers responded to that address and found obvious signs that the home had been broken into.

A garage door opener, belonging to a home in the 300 block of Stockade was also found in the suspect's vehicle. Officers say that opener was taken from a vehicle that was burglarized in front of the address. Police are still investigating whether or not that opener was used to enter the home.

At 3:45 a.m., police received a report of someone attempting to enter a home through a side door in the 3800 block of Sierra Court. The resident of that address armed himself with a handgun, called police and the suspect fled according to Sgt. McKinley.

A short time after, officers spotted a man attempting to break into a vehicle in the 3800 block of Overland Drive. The man was quickly arrested.

The Journal-World reports that the fourth suspect was located just before 7 a.m. near the Hy-Vee in the 4000 block of West Sixth Street. He attempted to flee, McKinley said, and was arrested after a lengthy foot chase.

The suspects have been identified as Tyler Snipes, 18, of Lawrence, Michael Dale Eller, 20, of LaCynge, and Stephan Thompson, 21, and Stafan Davis, 21, both of Parker.

Two injured in alleged central Lawrence stabbing

Lawrence Police are investigating a reported stabbing on Redbud Lane this morning.

Officers were called to an apartment in the 2500 block of Redbud Lane just before 2:20 Tuesday morning.

Police located a 38-year-old female with a laceration to her forearm. Medics transported the woman to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.


The victim and witnesses were able to give police a name and description of the alleged suspect. Officers were familiar with the alleged suspect and quickly located her in an apartment on building north of where there altercation occurred. The suspect was taken into custody for aggravated battery.

A second ambulance was dispatched to the 2500 block of Redbud Lane at 2:43 a.m., for the alleged suspect to be looked at. The suspect refused treatment from medics and was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by police.

The incident remains under investigation.

Couple attacked, man stabbed in Lawrence park

Lawrence Police are investigating after a man was found stabbed at Centennial Park early Monday.

Officers were called to the west side of the park, located in the 600 block of Rockledge Road, around 1:30 a.m. on reports of a man injured from a fight.

Lawrence Medics reported the man had been stabbed multiple times and described his injuries as serious. He was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police spokeswoman Kim Murphree tells Operation 100 News' reporting partners at 6 News Lawrence, a 31-year-old male and a 26-year-old female met officers in the park to report that the man had been attacked. When police arrived they found the victim injured from multiple lacerations.

6 News reports, the couple reported that they were walking from the Hillcrest Shopping Center at 9th and Iowa Streets to the man's home in the 3000 block of West 7th Street when they were approached by man. Little details are known about what was said, but at some point the two men got into a physical fight.

According to the victim, the suspect didn't steal from the couple or threaten them in any way. However, the victim also told police that he and the woman he was with were having a verbal argument as they walked across the Pool Room parking lot toward the park.

Police officers determined that the fight took place near the southwest corner of the park in a grassy area.

The victim was only able to give police a very vague description of an approximately 6ft tall, 200lbs man.

No one has been arrested and police continue to investigate.

Arrest made in Saturday morning homicide | Police continue to investigate

A 29-year-old Lawrence man faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in the 2400 block of Cedarwood Avenue early Saturday.

The shooting was reported just before 3:10 a.m.. Officers located a male, now identified as Patrick D. Roberts, 39, with a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews reported the Roberts' injuries to be critical. Medics rushed him to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A resident in the area told police that a person ran from the building eastbound and then northbound towards 23rd Street. That person was only described as a male wearing a black jacket.

Police detained two people for questioning shortly after the shooting. One ran from an officer in the area of 27th Street and Redbud Lane. He was apprehended at 4:25 a.m..

The second person that was detained for questioning was released later Saturday morning.

One person hospitalized following reported stabbing in Lawrence

Police are investigating after two people were found with lacerations in Eudora early Saturday.

Shortly before 3 a.m., Eudora Police and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews were dispatched to an address in the 1500 block of Savage Street, on a reported cutting.

Eudora Police reported that the incident allegedly occurred in Lawrence and the victims were then transported to the Eudora address.

A medic unit transported one person to a Kansas City area trauma center with serious injuries, said to include a laceration to the neck. Two medic units responded on the call, only one transported a victim from the scene.

Lawrence Police continue to investigate and at least one officer is at the hospital trying to get more information from the victim.

It remains unclear where, or when, the incident occurred.

No other details were immediately available.

Officer injured early Sunday in Lawrence

A Lawrence Police Officer suffered a head injury after falling during a foot chase early Sunday.

Just after 1:45 a.m., officers reported a subject running from them near 11th and Indiana Streets. The subject was said to be running west, towards Memorial Stadium. A call for emergency assistance was then sent out to the same area after the officer fell.


Other officers quickly apprehended the the suspect, near 11th and Mississippi Streets, and requested medics to the same intersection for the officer.

Medics reported the officer's injury to be serious but not immediately life threatening. He was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. The officer is said to be 27-years old.

It is unclear what caused the officer to fall.

Off-duty police officer killed in Wednesday morning crash

Update:

Lawrence Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed early Wednesday evening that the man killed in this morning's accident was an off-duty Lawrence police officer.

Troopers say Officer Matthew Edward Klock, 29, was killed when his 2012 Nissan Altima collided with a pole near W. 6th Street and Wakarusa Drive.

The Kansas Highway Patrol crash log of the incident says that Klock's vehicle was eastbound on the inside lane of 6th Street, when the vehicle went left of center and struck a light pole on the east side of the intersection with Wakarusa Drive. Klock was not wearing a seat belt. Troopers continue to investigate what, if any, role alcohol or slick roads may have played in the accident's cause.

Klock joined the Lawrence Police Department in 2007.

Lawrence Police Sergeant Trent McKinley told 6 News Lawrence that "a member of the force drove to Derby, Kansas, where Klock grew up, to personally notify family members this morning."

Lawrence Police are investigating this morning after one person was fatally injured in an apparent single vehicle accident.

Officers were initially dispatched on a non-injury accident at the intersection of W. 6th Street and Wakarusa Drive just after 2:15 Wednesday morning.

On arrival at 2:20 a.m., officers reported the lone occupant of the vehicle was unconscious. Medics were immediately dispatched to the scene and upon their arrival reported one vehicle with "major damage".

The occupant was initially said to be in critical condition as of 2:30 a.m.. Medics pronounced the person to be deceased at the scene, just before 2:40 a.m..

Police have shutdown the intersection completely as they investigate the accident.

Very few details were immediately available. It remains unclear what the vehicle struck.

Two seriously injured in Lawrence crash

Lawrence Police and Fire Medical crews were called to the intersection of W. 23rd Street and Naismith Drive at 2:52.

Arriving police officers reported two vehicles were involved and one person would need to be extricated from the crashed vehicle. Fire Medical crews arrived to report both vehicles sustained "moderate damage." Two people were injured, one in each vehicle, those injuries were both initially said to be serious. One of the injured driver's condition was upgraded to critical after further assessment by units at the scene.

Incident Command requested a LifeStar Helicopter respond to the scene at 3:05. The air-ambulance arrived over the scene at 3:18 and safely landed in the Hobby Lobby parking lot (1801 W. 23rd Street) at 3:20. Crews worked for about 20 minutes to extricate the pinned driver of one vehicle.

The critically injured person, only described as a male in his mid 20's, was transported by ambulance to the helicopter and was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Initial reports from investigators indicate he was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.

The seriously injured person, only described as a female in her late 30's, was transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Initial reports indicate that she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Lawrence Police continue to investigate the accident.

Man run over and dragged in Oct. 19 accident

Update:

A Lawrence Police accident report, obtained by the Lawrence Journal-World, says that, 22-year-old, Elbert Davis Jr., had fallen face-down on North Seventh Street, just north of Ash Street. Davis has medical issues and had been drinking alcohol before the fall.

About 1:30 a.m., a Dodge Stratus driven by Wade Briscoe, 21, of Lawrence, turned the corner on Ash Street and headed north on North Seventh Street. Briscoe ran over Davis, dragging him 56 feet.

Lawrence Police suspect Briscoe had been drinking alcohol, and administered tests. The results of those tests are pending and Briscoe has not been arrested or charged.

Davis was transported to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka, the Journal-World reports that an update on Davis' condition has not been available.

Lawrence Police are investigating this morning after a subject was run over by a vehicle.

Police and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews were dispatched to the intersection of N 7th Street and Ash Street at 1:23 a.m. after a caller reported that a person was lying in the street when a vehicle "rolled over" the subject.

Medics reported finding one person in critical condition near the intersection and requested the availability of a LifeStar helicopter. Dispatchers reported that the helicopter was unavailable due to high winds.

The injured person, was transported to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka.

The vehicle which struck the person reportedly remained at the scene. No other details have been released.

One person airlifted following single vehicle accident in Lawrence

Lawrence Police are investigating after a single vehicle crash seriously injured one person this morning.

Police arrived on scene at the intersection of E 15th Street and Pennsylvania Street at 1:05 to report a mini van, "on its side and on top of a tree."

Officers reported the female driver of the vehicle fled from the scene on foot, and was last seen westbound. Police caught up with that subject later in the morning and have arrested her. She faces numerous charges including; Leaving the Scene of an Injury Accident, and Driving While Suspended. County booking records show she is being held on a $4600 bail.

One Medic unit was initially dispatched to the scene, and arrived to report the vehicle had sustained heavy damage. Medics requested a fire crew and rescue crew be added to the call, along with a LDCFM Division Chief.

Police at the scene reported a female with an apparent broken leg and hand.

A LifeStar Helicopter was requested to respond to the athletic field at South Junior High, 15th and Massachusetts Streets.

The injured female, only described as being a "21-year-old", was transported by LifeStar to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas after 2 a.m..

No other injuries were reported.

Fire and rescue crews remained on the scene until 2:12 a.m.. Police continue to investigate and have not released any other information as of this report.
