Motorcyclist critically injured in crash with pickup truck

A man in his early 40s was transported to an area trauma center after his motorcycle crashed into the side of a pickup truck Saturday evening in Merriam.

Merriam police, Overland Park firefighters, and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics were called to Antioch Road at the top of the ramps to and from Interstate 35 just before 6:30 p.m.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the motorcyclist, only identified as a 41-year-old man, to the University of Kansas Medical Center in critical condition. He was not wearing a helmet according to the police.

No one in the truck was injured. The driver of the truck remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation.

At the scene, a Merriam Police Sergeant said they're unsure which driver had the green light. Police believe the motorcycle was southbound on Antioch, and the truck was exiting from northbound Interstate 35 to northbound Antioch Road.

The Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit was called in to assist with the crash investigation. Shawnee officers mapped the crash scene using a FARO 3D Laser Scanner and a drone.

Bonner Springs man killed in single-vehicle crash on K-10

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that killed one person in Lenexa Friday morning.

Lenexa Police were called to the area of westbound Interstate 435 near Kansas Highway 10 around 4 a.m. Friday on reports of an overturned vehicle off of the highway.

Firefighters reported the vehicle, a silver Mitsubishi Eclipse, sustained major damage in the crash and the driver was found deceased inside.

Troopers have identified the driver as Arnulfo V. Ramirez, 32, of Bonner Springs, Kansas. He was wearing his seat belt.

Troopers say Ramirez was driving a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse on the ramp from westbound Interstate 435 to westbound Kansas Highway 10 when he lost control in the rain. The vehicle spun to the right, left the roadway and struck a bridge pillar.

75th Street and Interstate 35 construction project update

The Kansas Department of Transportation says the ramps on the south side of 75th Street will reopen on Tuesday, September 2nd. The ramps were closed in July for pavement repair work.

Beginning Tuesday, September 2nd through late October the ramps on the north side of 75th Street will be closed for the same work to be completed.

Marked detours will be provided.

The detour for traffic on southbound Interstate 35 will exit at 67th Street, east to southbound Antioch Road, back to 75th Street.

The detour for drivers trying to get onto northbound Interstate 35 will continue also use Antioch Road and the 67th Street entrance ramp.

Traffic on 75th Street will be shifted to the south side of the bridge, with one through lane in each direction.

KDOT says drivers should expect major delays during peak commute times.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2015 and is being overseen by the city of Overland Park.

More construction this weekend on 75th Street

The intersection of 75th Street and Switzer Road will be closed this weekend for storm drainage repair work.
Overland Park project manager Brian Scovill says the closure will start Friday between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.. Work is expected to keep the intersection closed until around 6 a.m. Sunday, weather permitting.

Miles Excavating will be replacing a storm drainage pipe which runs under the intersection.

Scovill says there will be marked detours and businesses in the area will be open throughout the weekend.

Westbound traffic will be detoured at Antioch Road to Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Eastbound traffic will be detoured at Nieman Road to Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Two alarm house fire in JoCo

Firefighters from three area departments were on the scene of a two alarm house fire early Tuesday.

Leawood Police say a passerby reported flames from the back of a home near College Boulevard and Mission Road at 2:16 a.m.. Police and fire units were dispatched to the area to investigate the report. At 2:19 a.m., dispatchers received an automatic fire alarm from a home at 4109 West 110th Terrace.

Police arrived at 2:21 a.m. and reported visible fire from the home on 110th Terrace. Officers quickly contacted the residents and confirmed that everyone was out of the home.

Fire units started arriving at 2:23 a.m. and reported the fire was through the roof of the single story home. A second alarm was dispatched at 2:32 a.m.. The second alarm brought in additional manpower, equipment, and a Johnson County Med-Act Special Operations Unit. The special Med-Act unit serves as a firefighter rehydration and cooling area.

A neighboring home was evacuated as a precaution.

The fire was reported under control at 2:23 a.m.. The cause remains under investigation.

No injuries have been reported.

Fire crews on the scene were from the Leawood Fire Department, Overland Park Fire Department, and Consolidated Fire District No. 2.

Firefighters from Johnson County Fire District No. 2, the Lenexa Fire Department, and the Olathe Fire Department and are filling in at fire stations in Leawood and Overland Park.

Six vehicle accident forces closure of I-435 in JoCo

Overland Park Police and Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers are investigating after five passenger vehicles and a tractor trailer were involved in an accident early Monday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the eastbound lanes of Interstate 435 east of Quivira Road around 12:30 p.m. Monday on a reported rollover injury accident.

Overland Park Fire spokesperson Jason Rhodes tells Operation 100 News that four people were injured.

All of the injured were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.

Police closed all westbound lanes of I-435 and diverted traffic to US-69. All lanes reopened around 2:30 p.m..

75th Street construction project underway, already causing major delays

Work is underway on a construction project that is sure to cause major traffic delays in Johnson County. On Thursday, July 10th the crews narrowed 75th Street to just one lane in each direction, and shifted traffic to the north side of 75th Street. The project is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2015.

The city of Overland Park is overseeing the project, which spans from Shawnee into Merriam and Overland Park. Work will impact traffic on 75th Street between Switzer Road and E. Frontage Road.

Shawnee officials say 75th Street will be shifted to the north half of the roadway for pavement replacement and bridge work. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Switzer Road and E. Frontage Road.

The Kansas Department of Transportation says the ramps to and from Interstate 35, south of 75th Street will also be closed. Spokesperson Kimberly Qualls says the northbound Interstate 35 exit ramp to 75th Street and the entrance ramp from 75th Street to southbound Interstate 35 will both close at 11 a.m. Thursday. The ramps will remain closed until late August.

Once traffic is shifted to the north half of 75th Street, eastbound traffic will not be able to access northbound 75th Street.

Qualls says there will be a marked detour, utilizing 67th Street and Antioch Road.

Northbound I-35 traffic will detour via 67th Street exit and take eastbound 67th Street to Antioch Road, then southbound Antioch Road to eastbound 75th Street back to I-35. (See KDOT provided map below)

Traffic for the ramp from 75th Street to southbound I-35 will be detoured eastbound on 75th Street to Antioch Road, then northbound on Antioch Road to westbound 67th Street and back to southbound I-35.

In late August, 75th Street traffic will be shifted to the south half of 75th Street and the ramps north of 75th Street will be closed.

The intersection of 75th Street and Switzer Road will also be closed for one weekend for storm drainage work. A date for this closure has not been announced.

Overland Park officials say access to all businesses and properties along the route will be open throughout the construction process according to a news release from the city of Shawnee.

Interstate 435 is back open following an early morning car chase.
 
Overland Park Police started a low speed pursuit of a black Acura passenger car on westbound Interstate 435 around 2:45 Monday morning. Officers reported the vehicle's speed to be 17 miles per hour and approaching the Quivira Road overpass.

Speeds ranged between two and 10 miles per hour for the majority of the 25 minute pursuit. 

Pursuing officers reported the driver nearly struck the concrete jersey barrier at least once.

Overland Park Police were able to get spike strips out in front of the vehicle, just west of Quivira Road. The first set of spikes only hit the right side tires of the vehicle. The driver accelerated to just over 40 mile per hour, with officers right behind him.

As the pursuit crossed into Lenexa, officers were there with a second set of spike strips in the vehicle's path. The second set of spikes deflated all four of the vehicle's tires just before the Interstate 435 intersection with Interstate 35.

The driver continued westbound on I-435 to just before Lackman Road, where his vehicle came to a stop sideways across the highway and only about three miles from where the pursuit had started 25 minutes earlier.

Once stopped, the driver continued to ignore officers and could be seen moving around in the driver's seat of the stopped vehicle.

Police from Overland Park, Lenexa and Shawnee closed both directions of the I-435 between Kansas Highway 10 and Interstate 35. 

About 20 minutes after the vehicle stopped, officers approached in a patrol vehicle and were able to take the driver into custody without further incident.

Johnson County Med-Act was called to check the driver for possible injuries. He refused any treatment at the scene and remained in police custody.

Police are still investigating why the man chose not to stop for officers.

All eastbound lanes were reopened before 4 a.m.. Westbound lanes reopened about 4:17 a.m.. A tow truck removed the suspect vehicle from the right shoulder just before 5 a.m..

Police have identified the driver that was killed in the accident as Julio Cesar Romero-Zepeda, 22, of Olathe, Kansas.

Operation 100 News has spoke to one of the people who called 9-1-1 to report the accident, Darla Williams of Gardner, Kansas. Williams says that she was on her way home from babysitting her grandson in Olathe when she came upon the crash.


Williams said, "It was so dark, I could only hear the screams and I told 911 to send at least three ambulances, maybe more."


Olathe Police have not released any other information regarding the accident's cause or any other circumstances surrounding the crash.

There were no updates available on the other victims of the crash early Tuesday afternoon.

Olathe Police are investigating if a wrong way vehicle may have caused a serious accident this morning on Interstate 35.

The crash was reported shortly before 2:30 Sunday morning in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near Sheridan Street, north of Old U.S. 56 highway.

Police arrived on the scene to report two vehicles with heavy damage and several people trapped inside of a van.



Olathe fire crews reported one of the involved vehicles had rolled over following the crash and had sustained very heavy damage. Firefighters extricated at least three people from vehicles.

Johnson County Med-Act transported three people with critical injuries and at least two others are said to have serious injuries. A total of five ambulances were involved on the call.

The injured people were transported to three different area hospitals.

At 3:52 a.m., Operation 100 News was able to confirm that one of the critically injured, a 22-year-old male, had passed away at an area hospital.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 at Santa Fe (135th Street) were closed until around 6 a.m. Sunday for the accident scene to be investigated and cleaned up.

During the clean up, a mini-van crashed into a barricade that was blocking the southbound lanes. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the driver was not injured in this secondary accident.

Overland Park firefighters responded on a struck natural gas line Friday evening.

Atmos Energy was digging near the intersection of 151st Street and Switzer Road before 8 p.m. Friday, when a backhoe struck a four-inch natural gas line.

The strike broke the gas line and the escaping gas ignited. Atmos crews immediately notified the Overland Park Fire Department of the break and fire.

Overland Park Fire officials say firefighters cleared the area and stood by, while Atmos crews stopped the flow of gas through the line.

The fire was extinguished around 10 p.m., the intersection remained closed at that time so that KCP&L crews could inspect possible damage to nearby poles and equipment.

One home was evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

As of 7:15 a.m., Saturday, the intersection remained closed for KCP&L crews to repair damage. KCP&L says no one is without power due to the repairs.

One person killed in early morning motorcycle accident

The Olathe Police Department's Traffic Unit is investigating after a man was killed in a motorcycle crash this morning.

Police say the accident was reported shortly after 4 a.m., in the area of Northgate Street and South Nelson Road.

Olathe Police arrived to find one sport bike down in the roadway and a person lying in the nearby grass.

Olathe Fire and Johnson County Med-Act arrived at the scene and reported that the person was deceased.

Police say the rider is a white male in his 40's. Initial reports from Police indicate that the male was traveling northbound on Northgate when his motorcycle left the roadway near Nelson road and crashed in the median.

Anyone with information regarding the accident is asked to call Olathe Police at 913-782-0720.

One officer from the Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit was at the crash scene assisting with the investigation.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Police have not released the victim's name.

Shawnee man killed in motorcycle accident

The Kansas Highway Patrol says a 38-year-old, Shawnee man was killed in a motorcycle accident Monday morning on Interstate 35 in Lenexa.

The Highway Patrol's accident report says the accident happened at approximately 1:25 a.m. on the northbound Interstate 35 exit ramp to 75th Street. The accident scene was just before the long tunnel which runs under U.S. 69 Highway, just inside of Lenexa.


Troopers have identified the rider as Jason M. Gearhart of Shawnee, Kansas. Gearhart was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident report says Gearhart's 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle left the roadway for an unknown reason and went into the right ditch. The motorcycle then struck the rock boulders and the rider was thrown.

Troopers say Gearhart was not wearing a helmet.

Another motorcyclist was following Gearhart when the accident occurred and stopped to report the accident. Troopers say speed may have played a role in the accident, no other vehicles contributed to the accident's cause.

The ramp was closed by Lenexa Police at 1:30 a.m. and reopened to all traffic shortly before 7 a.m..

DUI check lane announced in Johnson County

Olathe Police will be conducting a DUI check lane on Friday, March 29th from 11 p.m. until 3 a.m..

Police say that during the check lane, all motorists in the designated area will be stopped and contacted in an effort to look for signs of impairment. Any drivers found in violation of the intoxicating liquor laws will be arrested. Drivers will also be checked for valid driver's licenses.

The check lane is a joint effort by the Olathe Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Highway Patrol and other Johnson County municipal agencies.

The location of the check lane is not released and Operation 100 News WILL NOT report to location of the check lane.

Water main break in Johnson County

An eight inch water main break has forced lane restrictions on a stretch of Antioch Road in Overland Park.

Overland Park Police were called to the area of W. 102nd Street and Antioch Road shortly before 2 a.m. Friday to check on a report from a passing motorist of a possible water main break. The arriving officer reported that there was water coming from under the pavement and that it had caused a section of the roadway to become impassable. Officers immediately closed Antioch Road to all traffic between 101st Street and 103rd Street.

As of 4:30 a.m., the roadway has since partially reopened. There is currently only one lane of traffic in each direction getting through the stretch

Crews from Johnson County WaterOne were called and are working to repair the water main and the roadway surface.

The work is expected to last until around 10 a.m.. Drivers in the area should expect delays and congested traffic.

Off-duty police officer killed in Wednesday morning crash

Update:

Lawrence Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed early Wednesday evening that the man killed in this morning's accident was an off-duty Lawrence police officer.

Troopers say Officer Matthew Edward Klock, 29, was killed when his 2012 Nissan Altima collided with a pole near W. 6th Street and Wakarusa Drive.

The Kansas Highway Patrol crash log of the incident says that Klock's vehicle was eastbound on the inside lane of 6th Street, when the vehicle went left of center and struck a light pole on the east side of the intersection with Wakarusa Drive. Klock was not wearing a seat belt. Troopers continue to investigate what, if any, role alcohol or slick roads may have played in the accident's cause.

Klock joined the Lawrence Police Department in 2007.

Lawrence Police Sergeant Trent McKinley told 6 News Lawrence that "a member of the force drove to Derby, Kansas, where Klock grew up, to personally notify family members this morning."

Lawrence Police are investigating this morning after one person was fatally injured in an apparent single vehicle accident.

Officers were initially dispatched on a non-injury accident at the intersection of W. 6th Street and Wakarusa Drive just after 2:15 Wednesday morning.

On arrival at 2:20 a.m., officers reported the lone occupant of the vehicle was unconscious. Medics were immediately dispatched to the scene and upon their arrival reported one vehicle with "major damage".

The occupant was initially said to be in critical condition as of 2:30 a.m.. Medics pronounced the person to be deceased at the scene, just before 2:40 a.m..

Police have shutdown the intersection completely as they investigate the accident.

Very few details were immediately available. It remains unclear what the vehicle struck.

Standoff comes to an end in Shawnee apartment complex

Shawnee Police called out their Special Tactics and Response (STAR) Team to assist with a situation at the Shawnee Station Apartments, late Thursday morning.

The apartments are on the northeast corner of W. 65th Street and Maurer Road.

Police were reportedly called to the area around 10:15 Thursday morning to check the welfare of a subject.

Around 11:30 a.m., Police could still be seen in the area of the apartment complex awaiting the arrival of the STAR Team.

Shortly after noon, Shawnee Police spokesperson Captain Dan Tennis told Operation 100 News, "there is currently an Operation 100 [situation involving a barricaded subject] going on at the Shawnee Station Apartments. There is a suicidal subject allegedly armed with a gun."

Johnson County Med-Act and Shawnee Fire were seen at the staging area near the Command Post.

Officials say the incident came to an end shortly after 2 p.m. when Police entered the apartment and found the man had taken his own life.

Two injured in head-on crash

Leavenworth County authorities are investigating after two vehicles collided head-on this morning south of Tonganoxie.

The accident was reported around 5:15 a.m. on U.S. Highway 24-40, also known as Chieftain Road, just to the south of 222nd Street. The crash scene was approximately one mile south of Tonganoxie.

First responders arrived at the scene to report two trucks were involved and both had sustained heavy damage. Each vehicle was said to have been occupied by only a driver. Crews had to extricate both men from their trucks.

A responding EMS unit reported thick fog with visibility of under 0.25 miles. Due to the decreased visibility, one medic unit was dispatched to respond from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical. That Lawrence medic unit was cancelled prior to their arrival at the scene.

Officials say the injuries are serious and both men have been transported to a Kansas City area trauma center.

Initial reports indicate that one man was wearing a seat belt, the other was not. It is estimated that both trucks were traveling at approximately 50 miles per hour when they collided head-on.

Officials are working to determine what led up to the accident and what role the weather may have played. As standard procedure, authorities are also investigating if either driver was possibly intoxicated.

U.S. Highway 24-40 was shut down to all traffic while crews were on the scene. As of 6:30 a.m., there has been no official confirmation as to whether or not the roadway has reopened.

Three people injured in crossover crash on K-10

The Kansas Highway Patrol has confirmed that this morning's accident was a crossover.

Troopers say at approximately 7 a.m., a 2005 Ford pickup truck was traveling in the right lane of eastbound K-10. The second vehicle, a 2005 Hyundai Elantra was traveling in the left lane next to the Ford truck.

The driver of the Ford truck attempted to change lanes to the left, causing the driver of the Hyundai to make an avoidance maneuver to the left. The Ford's driver lost control of the vehicle and crossed the center median. The Hyundai's driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle and came to a stop in the center median.

A third vehicle, a 2005 Scion XB, was traveling westbound on K-10 and swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid the out of control Ford truck. The Scion broadsided the Ford truck in the driver's door. Both vehicles came to rest off of the right shoulder of the westbound lanes of K-10.

Troopers have identified the driver of the Ford truck as, 62-year-old, Martin Bruce of Baldwin City. Bruce was wearing his seat belt when the accident occurred. He was transported to an area hospital.

The driver of the Hyundai Elantra has been identified as, Lawrence resident, Rachel Debes, 25. She was not injured in the incident and was wearing a seat belt.

Investigators say there were three people in the Scion. Those people have been identified as Olathe residents, Luis Elias-Sanchez, 29; Juan Moreno-Lopez, 22; and Carlos Torres-Oliva, 19. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol's accident report, Elias-Sanchez was not injured in the accident and was wearing a seat belt. Moreno-Lopez and Torres-Oliva were both injured in the crash and, according to the report, it is unknown if they were wearing seat belts. Both were transported to an area hospital. 

Troopers did not provide any updates on the conditions of the injured people.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a serious accident on K-10 in De Soto.

The accident was reported to authorities at 7:05 a.m. and is in the westbound lanes of K-10 just east of Kill Creek Road.

Initial reports indicated the crash began in the eastbound lanes of K-10 with a car and truck colliding. The truck then reportedly crossed the center median and collided with a westbound vehicle. This information has not been confirmed by authorities as of this report.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office say three vehicles, two with heavy damage, were involved in the accident.

Northwest Consolidated Fire District crews responded to the scene with Johnson County Med-Act. Reports from the scene indicated; one person with critical injuries, two others are said to have serious injuries and a fourth person with minor injuries is refusing treatment.

Dispatchers tell Operation 100 News that the accident scene has been cleared and traffic is returning to normal.

Driver critically injured in collision with parked vehicle

The Kansas Highway Patrol report says that a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee was legally parked on the right shoulder of southbound Interstate 35 near mile marker 227.3 or just north of the 75th Street bridge. 

Michelle D. Huff, 50 of Kansas City, Kansas, was traveling southbound in a 2004 Ford Taurus when the she drove onto the right shoulder and rear-ended the parked Jeep Grand Cherokee. Huff was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with critical injuries. She was wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred.

Troopers say the Jeep Grand Cherokee was unoccupied at the time of the collision.

One woman was critically injured this morning when the vehicle she was driving struck a car which was parked on the shoulder of Interstate 35.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the accident was reported shortly before 6:00 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 just north of the 75th Street overpass, and one person sustained life-threatening injuries.

The injured person is only described as a "female in her 50's".

A Kansas Highway Patrol dispatcher says that the exit ramp from southbound Interstate 35 to 75th Street remains open.

No other information is currently available.

Child on bicycle struck by vehicle in Olathe

Olathe Police are investigating after a 9-year-old boy on a vehicle was struck by a vehicle this morning.

Police say they were called to the 1800 block of Dennis Avenue at 8:13 Monday morning. The juvenile is said to have been crossing Dennis Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle that was traveling eastbound.

Johnson County Med-Act says the boy was transported to an area hospital for evaluation and his injuries were considered minor.

Investigators say the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, uninjured, and is cooperating with the investigation.
