Operation 100 News has independently confirmed that one person has been found dead at the scene of an early-morning apartment fire.
The fire was reported inside an apartment at 7610 West 59th Terrace just after 4 a.m. Monday. The apartments are located near Johnson Drive and Robinson Lane, or just west of Shawnee Mission North High School.
A resident of the building reported smoke from a neighboring apartment.
Overland Park Police arrived to report flames visible from outside of the building. Two officers made their way into the building to make sure residents had evacuated. Heavy smoke forced the officers to back out and wait for the fire department.
Arriving firefighters also reported flames visible from the second floor of the two story apartment building.
Firefighters located one person down in the apartment where the fire is believed to have originated. Johnson County Med-Act pronounced that person dead at the scene.
The fire was declared under control at 4:32 a.m. and out at 4:47 a.m.. No other injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Merriam and Overland Park fire crews are investigating after an electrical fire forced more than 20 people from their apartments late Monday.
Firefighters were called to the Georgetown Apartments in the 7100 block of Eby Drive just before 10 p.m.. Arriving firefighters reported a fire in an electrical panel in the basement of the two story apartment building.
Overland Park Fire's media manager Jason Rhodes says crews were able to knock down the fire with extinguishers, but because of the electricity, were unable to offensively fight the fire.
KCP&L arrived around 11:30 p.m. and cut power to the building.
After power was cut, firefighters were able to quickly knock the fire down and declared the fire under control about 11:50 p.m..
Rhodes says, "Firefighters did rescue a number of animals from the building. It's believed that 16 units are currently displaced and apartment management is working to relocate residents."
During the fire, power was turned off to the entire apartment complex. KCP&L is working to restore power to the other buildings in the complex, while leaving power off at the fire building.
No injuries were reported.

Shawnee fire officials say careless smoking caused late night fire at the Cottonwood Park Apartments that injured two people.
Crews were called to the complex at 6311 Cottonwood Street shortly before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
Shawnee Police arrived and reported fire visible and one person possibly trapped inside an apartment. An officer was able to quickly locate and remove one man from an apartment.
When firefighters arrived they reported flames were visible from the exterior of the three-story apartment building.
Johnson County Med-Act reported one man was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital's burn center. His injuries were described as serious burns. A female with minor smoke inhalation was transported to Shawnee Mission Medical Center. A third ambulance was dispatched to remain on the scene as crews continued to work the fire.
The fire was reported under control shortly after midnight and then confirmed to be out at 12:42 a.m.
Investigators say the resident of the apartment had been drinking alcohol and fell asleep in bed while smoking a cigarette. Neighbors awoke to the sound of smoke alarms and called 911 for help.
Shawnee fire marshal Corey Sands says, "this fire underscores the extreme dangers of smoking in bed and especially while under the influence."
The Merriam Fire Department and a Battalion Chief from the Overland Park Fire Department assisted on the call.
The Red Cross is assisting residents who were displaced by the fire.

Firefighters from three area departments responded on a house fire Saturday afternoon.
A neighbor reported the fire at 11215 W. 70th Street in Shawnee around 12:45 p.m.. The address is near the intersection of 70th Street and Nieman Road.
Firefighters arrived to find flames visible inside the living room of the two story home.
While conducting an initial search of the residence, crews located a female down inside the room where the fire is believed to have started.
Firefighters rescued the woman and Johnson County Med-Act reported her to be in very critical condition when she was transported to Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
Crews were able to bring the fire under control in about 15 minutes. No other injuries were reported.
Damages are estimated at $80,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire investigators found a smoke alarm inside the home but the battery had been removed.
The female resident, only identified as a female in her 50's, was transferred to the University of Kansas hospital's burn unit around 2:15 p.m..
Shawnee Fire Marshal Corey Sands says, "Our thoughts are with the resident and her family right now. We will continue to investigate to find out how this fire started and why the resident was not able to get out."
The Shawnee Fire Department was assisted on the call by crews from the Overland Park Fire Department and Merriam Fire Department.

Update:
Fire officials believe the fire was sparked by a gas line that feeds a fireplace inside one of the apartments. That gas line was turned on Tuesday. Gas from that line somehow escaped and ignited in a furnace in the apartment, causing an explosion and the fire that followed.
Officials also say that the man who was seriously burned and transported from the scene in critical condition has stabilized but, remains in serious condition. The police officer that was transported from the scene was treated and released.

Firefighters from four different fire departments battled an apartment fire in northern Overland Park Tuesday afternoon.
At 12:15 p.m. multiple 9-1-1 callers reported a possible explosion and then a large fire from the three story building at 5604 Floyd Street. This is at the Metcalf 56 Apartments, just south of Interstate 35 along Metcalf Road.
Overland Park Police were first to arrive and reported very heavy smoke coming from the building. Officers made their way inside to check for residents inside.
Consolidated Fire District No. 2 arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke and fire from the building. Incident command quickly ordered additional fire crews with a second alarm and a third alarm at 12:44 p.m..

Johnson County Med-Act evaluated at least eight people at the scene, two of those people have been transported from the scene.
A man was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital in critical condition with second and third degree burns to his upper body, face, and feet.
An Overland Park police officer was transported to Shawnee Mission Medical Center in serious condition with smoke inhalation related symptoms.
Crews worked to keep the fire from extending to the other half of the building.

Consolidated Fire District No. 2 was assisted by crews from Overland Park Fire, Merriam Fire and Shawnee Fire. Johnson County's Medical Director was also on the scene. Various other fire departments filled-in at stations for crews that were involved on the fire call. Shawnee Fire called in off-duty personnel to fill their stations.
The Shawnee Fire Department's heavy rescue was also on the scene to refill air bottles used by firefighters while inside the building.
As of 2:20 p.m., fire investigators have arrived at the University of Kansas hospital to interview the critically injured man. That man was reportedly in the apartment where the fire started.
A damage estimate was not immediately available, the building is likely a complete loss. Fire officials say at least 10 units were damaged by fire and another six units have smoke damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.

Merriam Police are investigating after a bicyclist was struck by a car Wednesday morning.
The accident was reported around 6:10 a.m. in the 6500 block of E. Frontage Road, near Gold's Gym.
Johnson County Med-Act reports a 49-year-old man with serious injuries. The man has been transported to an area hospital for further treatment. His injuries are said to be to his legs. He was not wearing a helmet.
The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

A Time Warner Cable employee working to install a cable line in Merriam was shocked and burnt by an electric line Saturday morning.
The employee was working in the 10000 block of W 70th Terrace, around 8:30 a.m., when authorities say his arm came into contact with an electrical wire.
Merriam firefighters reported the worker was 20-25 feet up a utility pole when he was shocked.
Johnson County Med-Act transported the 44-year-old man to the University of Kansas Hospital for further treatment. His injuries were said to be serious but, not immediately life threatening.

Crews from three area fire departments extinguished an apartment fire Tuesday evening in Johnson County.
Firefighters were called shortly after 6:30 p.m. to the Four Winds Apartments, located at 10222 W. 80th Street in Overland Park.
Arriving firefighters reported smoke visible from a first floor of the two story apartment building, which was being evacuated on arrival.
The fire was located in a kitchen and was quickly extinguished by firefighters.
A news release says the resident of the damaged apartment told fire investigators that she was cooking and had a grease fire on the stove. She attempted to put it out with flour and then a fire extinguisher, but the fire was too big. She got out of the apartment and called 911.
No injuries were reported and only one unit was uninhabitable Tuesday night.
Crews from the Lenexa Fire Department and Merriam Fire Department also assisted on the fire.
Overland Park Fire says you should keep a cookie sheet near your stove and in the event of a fire, slide it over the top of the pan that is on fire. This will smother the fire. Do not move the pan or put anything else on the fire. Cover the fire, get out and call 911.

Investigators say careless smoking is likely to blame for sparking the fire, which displaced 22 residents.

Firefighters from two area departments battled an apartment fire late Tuesday evening.
Crews were called to the Hillsborough Apartments, 5413 Foxridge Drive, around 8:40 p.m. after dispatchers received multiple 911 calls about fire in the building.
Firefighters arrived to report heavy fire showing from the building. Crews from Consolidated Fire District No. 2 of Northeast Johnson County and the Merriam Fire Department worked for just over an hour to get the fire under control.
Investigators say eight units sustained damage, four of which were heavily damaged. A total of 22 residents were displaced by the fire, including two children. The Red Cross is on scene to provide those residents with assistance.
No injuries were reported.

On Monday Operation 100 News was contacted by one of the residents of the home damaged in this fire. Aaron Kalmer tells me that three cats died in the fire. Two dogs and five reptiles all survived and are "doing great." Kalmer says the reptiles include two snakes and three bearded dragons.

Emergency crews in Overland Park were called to a possible house fire at 7542 Hardy Street just before 2:20 Sunday afternoon.
Overland Park Police arrived at the scene to find the doors to the home locked with dogs barking inside. Officers forced the front door open to attempt to rescue the animals. At least one dog was rescued by officers. The number and status of other pets inside the home was not immediately clear. Police dispatchers informed officers of special use permits to the address for snakes and possibly other reptiles.
Firefighters arrived to report smoke visible from the roof of the single story, ranch style home. Investigation led crews to the attic where they found the majority of the fire to be.
One firefighter was treated at the scene by Johnson County Med-Act after he was exposed to high heat conditions. After being assessed, the firefighter refused further medical treatment and returned to work.
Firefighters were forced to evacuate the structure at one point by heavy smoke and high heat conditions. After about 12 minutes, enough smoke had dissipated and crews were allowed to reenter the structure.
The Merriam Fire Department assisted Overland Park Fire crews on the fire scene.
The fire was declared under control at 3:18 p.m.. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available.

Merriam Police were forced to shut down all lanes of Interstate 35 for about an hour this morning following an injury accident.
Officials say three vehicles were involved in the crash which began after a Jeep spun out and was then struck by another vehicle. A third vehicle then struck the vehicle already involved.
Three people were transported from the scene. One of those injuries was said to be serious but, non-life threatening.
The Interstate was closed at 3:20 a.m. and all lanes were cleared at 4:20 a.m.
Operation 100 News reported this accident and closure to the public as it happened. No information from any other media until after 4 a.m..

Update:
The Kansas Highway Patrol report says that a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee was legally parked on the right shoulder of southbound Interstate 35 near mile marker 227.3 or just north of the 75th Street bridge.
Michelle D. Huff, 50 of Kansas City, Kansas, was traveling southbound in a 2004 Ford Taurus when the she drove onto the right shoulder and rear-ended the parked Jeep Grand Cherokee. Huff was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with critical injuries. She was wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred.
Troopers say the Jeep Grand Cherokee was unoccupied at the time of the collision.

One woman was critically injured this morning when the vehicle she was driving struck a car which was parked on the shoulder of Interstate 35.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says the accident was reported shortly before 6:00 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 just north of the 75th Street overpass, and one person sustained life-threatening injuries.
The injured person is only described as a "female in her 50's".
A Kansas Highway Patrol dispatcher says that the exit ramp from southbound Interstate 35 to 75th Street remains open.
No other information is currently available.

Firefighters from two area departments rescued a woman from a Johnson County well this afternoon.
Crews from the Merriam and Overland Park Fire Department's were called to an address in the 9800 block of Hocker Drive in Merriam at 1:56 Sunday afternoon.
Merriam Firefighters reported the victim, a 72-year-old female, fell into a 20 foot well, which contained approximately 10 feet of water. Crews were able to lower a flotation device to the woman until they could setup rescue equipment.
Officials say the woman was alert and talking to rescuers throughout the ordeal.
Crews had the woman removed from the well in under 10 minutes. She was transported by Johnson County Med-Act to an area trauma center to be checked out. Her injuries were not said to be serious.
Fire crews say they have covered the well.

Firefighters from Shawnee and Merriam are on scene of an apartment building fire this morning.
The call was dispatched just at 7:02 a.m. at 13901 W 63rd Terrace at Cottonwood Park Apartments.
A caller reported that the bathroom ceiling was on fire. Police arrived to report visible fire in the bathroom and began evacuating the building.
Firefighters arrived and located fire in a bathroom wall on the third floor, with extension to the attic. Crews have confirmed that all of the apartments in the building are evacuated.
Crews reported the fire to be under control at 7:22 a.m.
Shawnee Fire Chief John Mattox said Investigators are at the scene but, it appears the fire may have been burning for several hours in the attic space before it was noticed by a resident. Damage was contained to one apartment, all other residents are expected to be able to return home this afternoon.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Merriam Police are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a train just east of the intersection of 57th Street and Kessler Lane. Police received a call from the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe reporting one of their trains had struck a pedestrian around 1:55 a.m..
Police arrived on scene and had located the pedestrian by 2 a.m.. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The railroad crossing just west of Interstate 35 on Johnson Drive was closed for about five hours as the involved train stopped at the scene for Police to investigate the accident.
The trains engineer tells Police that he saw a male lying on the tracks but, was unable to stop the train to avoid hitting the man. Investigators believe the train was traveling 30-35 miles per hour when the man was spotted on the tracks.
Police ask anyone who may have been in the area around the time the incident occurred to contact them. Officers are also checking with surrounding businesses equipped with security cameras that may have captured the incident on tape.

Just after 8:20 p.m., Shawnee firefighters were called to investigate reports of an apartment building fire at building 7606-7608 Goddard Street, Fox Run Apartments.
As fire crews began to arrive in the area, they reported smoke was visible. Once crews reached the building, inside the apartment complex, smoke was visible from the two story apartment building. A short time later, those same crews reported fire was now showing through the roof.
A 2nd-Alarm response was requested just before 8:45 p.m.

Shawnee Fire Department, Fire Prevention Officer, Corey Sands, says Firefighters rescued two people from second floor balconies using ground ladders. Both people were reported to have minor injuries, they were treated on the scene and released. No other injuries were reported.
Sands also says residents of 24 units were displaced by the fire. 12 of those units sustained significant damaged in the blaze. The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage is now estimated at $750,000.

Firefighters from Merriam, Overland Park and Lenexa assisted Shawnee Fire on the scene. The Johnson County Emergency Communications Center Mobile Command Post also responded to the scene.
Two fire crews remained on the scene until around 4:30 a.m., extinguishing hot spots.
Investigators will return to the site this morning to continue the investigation.
