Dryer fire forces partial evacuation of Shawnee assisted living facility

An early morning dryer fire forced the partial evacuation of an assisted living facility in Shawnee.

Firefighters from Shawnee and Lenexa were called to Shawnee Heartland Assisted Living, 16207 Midland Drive, shortly after 1:30 Saturday morning.

Arriving firefighters reported light smoke inside the building upon their arrival. Three Johnson County Med-Act ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

Radio traffic indicates that around 20 residents were evacuated from their rooms to the waiting ambulances and other wings of the building that were clear of smoke.

Shawnee Fire Marshal Corey Sands tells Operation 100 News that there was a dryer fire. One fire sprinkler head activated and extinguished the fire. No one was injured.

All residents were allowed to return to their rooms before 2:15 a.m..

Change in service hours notice

Beginning on Sunday, December 13, 2012, the business hours of Operation 100 News will change.

My new hours will be from 12 a.m. (midnight) until 5 a.m., seven days a week.

The change in hours comes at the request of one media contract who is seeking to fill a gap in their overnight news coverage. I am hopeful that these hours will attract additional media inquiries for overnight and/or weekend morning coverage.

More and more media outlets are being forced to make budget cuts. Operation 100 News is here to help you remain within your budget constraints while remaining on top of breaking news. Additional information for interested media outlets can be found here. Rates are very affordable and flexible based on your specific needs.

As many of my longtime followers know, Operation 100 News is the work of one person with privately purchased equipment. Without media contracts and occasional donations from the public, I would not be able to provide real-time updates to the public at no cost, as I have done on Twitter since July 2009.

I continue to explore the option of making Operation 100 News a paid-subscription based service. This option would allow me to turn a profit, instead of just barely breaking even. While not popular with most current followers, I have to make a living for myself. Any changes to a paid service would be in the future, at least a year away.

Lenexa man killed in rollover crash

Update:

Overland Park Police have identified the 20-year-old man killed in this morning's accident as John Stevens Hauk II of Lenexa, Kansas. Investigators say he was not wearing a seat belt and suffered fatal injuries in the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Friends tell Operation 100 News, Hauk was a 2010 graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School.

The Overland Park Police Department Traffic Safety Unit is investigating what caused a fatal accident this morning.

Police say they were called to northbound US 69 highway just north of Interstate 435 at 1:52 Tuesday morning.

Investigators say one car was involved and rolled after losing control on the ramp from westbound Interstate 435 to northbound US 69 highway. The driver is believed to have over corrected twice before the car rolled an undetermined number of times.

Overland Park Fire units reported the car had come to rest on its top and sustained heavy damage.

The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 20-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene. That man's identity will not been released until his family can be notified.

The northbound lanes of of US 69 were closed, at Interstate 435, as the accident is investigated. Those lanes were reopened around 4:00 a.m.. Police say the ramp from westbound Interstate 435 to northbound US 69 was reopened at 5:48 a.m..

Olathe Wal-Mart evacuated after bomb threat

Olathe Police say they were called to the Wal-Mart, 395 N. K-7 Highway at 11:57 Sunday night on a reported bomb threat.

Officers contacted an employee who reported the store had received a call from an unknown person who stated there was a bomb in the store. The store was immediately evacuated and the Olathe Fire Department's K-9 was used to check the interior of the store.

Nothing was found during the search and the store was reopened at 2:03 Monday morning, according to a statement from Olathe Police.

The incident remains under investigation by the Olathe Police Department. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Olathe Police at 913-971-6950 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

As of this report, there have been no reports of any similar calls at other area Walmart stores as there was back in July of this year. Previous story on threats received at three Kansas Walmart stores.

Large brush fire in west Lawrence

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical was dispatched to a grass fire in the 6000 block of Bob Billings Parkway and George Williams Way at 10:20 a.m.. A media release says that due to extremely dry conditions, wind gusts and an abundance of dry vegetation, the fire began to spread rapidly to the northeast potentially affecting several homes along Palisades Street and Langston Hughes Elementary School. The incident was upgraded to a structure fire with mutual aid requests from numerous neighboring departments.

Mutual aid was received from; Eudora Township, Wakarusa Township, Lecompton Township, Willow Springs Township, and Kanwaka Township.

In addition to the Douglas County departments, mutual aid was also requested from several Johnson County departments which included; Olathe, Lenexa, Overland Park, and Shawnee Fire Departments. Johnson County Med-Act also assisted with emergency medical coverage.

Numerous homes in the 6200 block of Palisades street were evacuated until the fire could be contained. All residents were allowed back into their homes by 12:30 p.m..

No injuries were reported to Fire Department personnel and the American Red Cross provided rehydration assistance to multiple responding agencies.

Investigators say the fire was sparked after a squirrel came into contact with overhead electrical power lines, causing a spark which ignited the vegetation beneath the line.

Officials say there is not a dollar loss associated with the vegetation burned, however minor damages are being assessed of the houses that were adjacent to the burned area.

3-year-old Kansas boy found safe after Amber Alert

Update: Authorities say 3-year-old Anthony Lopez and his non-custodial Father, Francisco Lopez, were both located near Arkansas City, Kansas early Sunday evening. Lopez has been taken into Police custody and the Amber Alert has been canceled. Officials will only say that Anthony Lopez was found safe, no other information regarding the incident has been released at this time.

3-year-old Anthony Hernandez

An Amber Alert has been issued for 3-year-old Anthony Hernandez (10/1/2008). He is described as a white male, standing 2 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 38lbs, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He was last seen wearing a yellow tank top, black shorts with yellow stripes, and yellow 'Spongebob Square Pants' crocks.

He was last seen in the 600 block of S 6th Street in Arkansas City, Kansas, 67005, late Saturday, June 30th, 2012.

Authorities say the suspect is Francisco Lopez, a 33-year-old (January 1979) white male, standing 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 200lbs, with brown hair and a bald head. Lopez was last seen wearing a dark blue t-shirt and dark blue shorts. Lopez is Anthony's non-custodial Father according to local Police.

The suspect owns a white 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier bearing on Oklahoma license plate of 336 HPW. Police say a reflector on the rear of the vehicle between the rear brake lights is broken.

Authorities say the suspect is possibly headed to Yonkers, New York after a domestic dispute in Arkansas City, Kansas. Unknown direction of travel.

Stabbing reported in Shawnee

Shawnee Police are investigating after a stabbing was reported in the 6600 block of Park Street. Police and Med-Act were dispatched just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Johnson County Med-Act reported that one person had been stabbed and was in serious condition.

Police continue to investigate and no other details were immediately available.

Police Officer suffers medical emergency

This morning shortly before 4 a.m., Lenexa Police were called to investigate a disturbance at an apartment complex in the 9100 block of Renner Boulevard. After the Police confirmed that the situation was stable, Johnson County Med-Act was requested to respond to the scene for a battery victim.

After arriving on scene Med-Act reported a Police Officer was having a "near syncopal episode", more commonly known as fainting. Med-Act assessed the battery victim's injuries to be minor and has requested a second Med-Act ambulance for the Police Officer.


Police are not currently confirming or commenting on this report. Scanner traffic indicates that the officer is serious but, stable at this time. The Officer is reported to be a male in his early 40's and he has been transported to an area hospital for treatment. No other details were immediately available.

Firefighters report heavy fire showing from Olathe house

Crews from Olathe and Lenexa are on the scene of a house fire at 561 E 126th Terrace in Olathe. First arriving crews reported heavy smoke showing and then spotted flames visible on the rear of the two story home. The fire was reported shortly before 9:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Upon further investigation, Firefighters reported a rear porch was "fully involved" with fire. The fire also spread to the second floor and attic. Those firefighters also reported a downed power line in the backyard. A second-alarm was added to the call at 10 minutes into the incident.

A Battalion Chief on the scene sent a crew to ventilate the roof while another attacked the fire from the inside. As soon as the vent hole was cut into the roof, fire poured from inside.

The fire was declared to be under control at 10:01 a.m.. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available.

Firefighters from the Shawnee and Overland Park Fire Departments, along with Johnson County Fire District No. 2 are filling in at Olathe fire stations currently.

$75,000 in damages to Lawrence home following fire

Update: Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, Chief Mark Bradford tells my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World, that damage is estimated at $75,000. Investigators determined that the fire was accidental and caused by landscaping mulch covering an in-ground lighting source. The fire extended to inside the house, where crews found fire in lower level utility and storage area. (Link)

Lawrence firefighters were called to an address in the 1700 block of Lake Alvamar Drive around 4:10 a.m. Saturday. Lawrence Journal-World story.

Initial reports from the resident were of a small fire in the basement utility closet of the two story house. Police confirmed that all occupants of the house were safely outside. Officers also reported visible flames at the bottom of the basement stairs.

Upon arrival and preliminary investigation, fire crews confirmed that there was a working fire in the basement. A second alarm response was added to the incident for additional manpower. Firefighters outside of the home reported fire visible on an exterior corner with extension into some landscaping material. The fire inside and outside was quickly knocked down and later was declared to be out, about 30 minutes after crews arrived on the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and a damage estimate has not been released. No injuries were reported.

Fire reported at Overland Park home

Overland Park and Lenexa Firefighters are on scene of a house fire in the 10500 block of W 92nd Place.

Firefighters were dispatched at 8:20 a.m. for a reported fire in the laundry room of the house. Upon arrival crews reported heavy smoke from two sides of the split level home.

Further investigation led fire crews to a fire in a basement wall with extension to a first floor kitchen closet. Crews are also making access to the attic to check for extension. Crews were able to confirm, with the homeowner, that everyone was evacuated safely.

No other details were immediately available and no injuries have been reported.

This is the second fire that Overland Park and Lenexa firefighters have responded on this morning. The first fire was reported around 6:40 a.m., more information on that fire can be found here.

Fire reported at Lenexa apartment complex

Lenexa Firefighters extinguished a small fire in the attic of an apartment building in the 9500 block of Monrovia Street. Initial reports were of smoke in the area. One fire crew responded to the area with police and found light smoke visible from the roof of one building.

That building was quickly evacuated and a small fire was found in the attic of a second floor apartment. A full alarm response was ordered to assist with evacuations of the building. 

Officials say they pulled ceilings in several apartments to confirm that the fire was completely extinguished.

Firefighters from the Overland Park Fire Department were also called and assisted with the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available. No injuries were reported.

Driver identified in fatal Interstate 435 accident

Update: The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified the deceased driver as, 22-year-old, Clayton S. McCully of Bonner Springs, Kansas. Troopers say McCully was traveling southbound on Interstate 435 at milepost 8.8, or .2 miles south of Woodend Avenue in Edwardsville, when his vehicle collided with a stationary construction vehicle.

According to Troopers, the stationary construction vehicle, a 2006 Chevrolet C5500 Truck, was parked inside a construction zone transition area. The area was marked with orange cones, yellow lights, and an arrow board indicating for traffic to move over to the right. For an unknown reason, McCully's 2002 Ford Ranger, continued into the construction area where it crashed into the rear of the parked truck.

Troopers say McCully was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after an early morning fatality accident on Interstate 435 in Wyandotte County.

Troopers say the accident occurred around 2 a.m. when a southbound 2002 Ford Ranger crashed into the back of a parked construction signal truck at the beginning of a construction site.

Dispatchers say the accident was reported just before 2:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 435 near Woodend Road. The accident was reported by the construction crew. No one was in the signal truck when the accident occurred. There are not believed to be any witnesses to the crash.

Edwardsville Fire and Police responded to the scene and reported a small pickup truck had crashed into a construction truck. Command reported that the single occupant of the pickup truck was deceased and would require extended extrication.

The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department also sent units to the scene who assisted with the accident, including a Haz-Mat unit for a fuel spill. The impact of the pickup truck into the construction truck is said to have punctured the construction truck's fuel tank.

The deceased driver has only been identified as a white male in his mid-twenties.

Troopers say the highway was never closed southbound. Traffic was restricted to only one lane for nearly four hours. All lanes reopened to traffic just after 5:45 a.m..

No other information was immediately available.

Check lane announced and results from last week's efforts

The Overland Park Police Department announced that they will be conducting a DUI Check Lane, Friday night into early Saturday morning, May 11-12, 2012.

Police say they will have assistance from other local law enforcement agencies including; Lenexa, Merriam, Mission and Olathe.

A statement released Wednesday afternoon encourages people to designate a sober driver.

A similar check lane held last Friday night, May 4th, by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, checked 362 cars. Deputies say they made 12 DUI arrests, two drug arrests, 1 for transporting an open container and one for driving while suspended.

The Olathe Police Department's Traffic Unit conducted a driver's license check lane and saturation patrol last Saturday night, May 5th. A statement released by Olathe police says that Officers issued 68 traffic citations during the effort, 37 of those citations were for no driver's license. Four were for driver's license suspensions, eight seat belt violations, two DUI arrests and two narcotics arrests.

Funding for most of these efforts is provided by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), designed to reduce alcohol related crashes in the State of Kansas

KDOT says, across the State of Kansas, fatality accidents are down 26.2% from the same time last year with much of the credit going to enforcement of the primary seat belt law and DUI enforcement.

One person critically injured in violent crash

The Overland Park Police Department's Traffic Unit is investigating after a driver was critically injured in a rollover accident near 87th Street and Conser Street around 2:15 a.m., Tuesday.

Police arrived on the scene, about two minutes after being dispatched, to find one vehicle on its roof and the driver partially ejected from the rolled Jeep Cherokee. An Overland Park Fire Department unit arrived and reported heavy damage to the vehicle. Fire crews worked about 20 minutes to extricate the critically injured driver, who was partially pinned under the overturned Jeep.


Police say the Jeep Cherokee was stolen, sometime overnight, from an address in Overland Park. The same Jeep was also involved in a hit and run accident, of at least one parked car, in the 8300 block of Robinson Street. A witness to that crash then followed the suspect. That witness tells Police that the suspect turned off all of the vehicles lights and tried to speed away. The suspect attempted to turn eastbound on 87th Street from Robinson when the vehicle rolled over.

The driver has only been identified as a male in his 20's with extremely critical injuries. Officers say the man did not have any form of identification with him.

Severe weather strikes Douglas & Johnson counties Sunday

This morning, the National Weather Service says two tornadoes briefly touched down in Olathe on Sunday evening.

The first touchdown was reported at 6:10 p.m., near Kansas 7 Highway (K-7) and Santa Fe Street by a Trained Weather Spotter.

About 10 minutes later, another touchdown was, reported at 6:22 p.m., near Interstate 35 and United States Highway 169 (US-169) by Olathe Fire Department personnel. See the YouTube video at the bottom of this post for audio of this report.

Weather Spotters and Law Enforcement also reported rotation and lowering in the area of K-7 south of 119th Street and to the southwest of the K-7 and K-10 interchange. This lowering was not reported to have made contact with the ground.

No injuries or damage were reported directly related to the brief tornado touchdowns.

Severe Weather Reports to the National Weather Service

Hail was also reported just outside of Eudora and in Lawrence. Hail reports in Douglas County varied from Dime to Half Dollar in size. Minor damage was reported to a few vehicles in Douglas County as a result of the hail.

Several hundred were without power for times in both Douglas and Johnson Counties. Westar Energy reported nearly 600 Douglas County customers without power around 6:30 p.m..

Here is a rare glimpse behind the scenes of what was going on here at Operation 100 News as the second touchdown was being reported in Olathe. This recording includes audio from four scanners, with audio from Law Enforcement, Fire Department, and Weather Spotters. Some of the audio is difficult to understand as scanner volumes varied and the camera was closer to the Law Enforcement scanner than it was to the Spotter and Fire Department scanners.

Single vehicle accident leaves one seriously injured

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after a man was seriously injured in a single vehicle accident on Interstate 35 in Lenexa.

Troopers say the accident occurred around 6:00 a.m.. One vehicle left the highway and rolled. Investigators identified the driver as 24-year-old Jason A. Varughese, of Pahrump, Nevada.

Investigators say Varughese was northbound in the right lane of Interstate 35, traffic in front of his vehicle slowed and in attempt to avoid colliding with one of the slowing vehicles, Varughese made an avoidance maneuver to the right. His vehicle went off of the roadway, struck a culvert and overturned. Varughese was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

After crashing Varughese extricated himself from the crashed 2001 Toyota passenger car and began walking northbound along the highway, where he was located by the Kansas Highway Patrol. He was later transported by Johnson County Med-Act to an area hospital, where he was said to be in serious condition Friday morning.

Chase B. Lekan found safe in May 2012

Update: The Olathe Police Department announced this afternoon that Chase B. Lekan was located at 12:50 p.m. today. He is said to be in good health. No further details are being released at this time. In a statement released this afternoon, Police thanked the public for their assistance in the matter.

Police say Chase Lekan has been a resident of an Olathe Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility since August 2011. He was on a weekend pass visiting his family when he ran away from their home in Olathe.

Chase suffers from Bi-polar Disorder, Anxiety Disporder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and ADHD. Chase also has a Heart Arrythmia and is on prescription medications which he left without.

Chase is a 15-year-old, white male, 5'11", and 160-170lbs.

He has also been know to have past violent tendencies, has been suicidal and is a known drug user.

Chase was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt, grey hooded sweatshirt, long khaki shorts, Nike Air Jordan high top shoes, and a blue KC Royals hat.

He is known to frequent Two Trails Park in Olathe and also stated that he was planning on leaving for Texas according to Olathe Police.

Ottawa man struck and killed by a car on I-35 in Lenexa

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after, 23-year-old, Kevin E. Polidore of Ottawa, Kansas, was struck and killed by a vehicle in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near the exit to 87th Street Parkway.

Investigators say the accident occurred at approximately 3:58 a.m., when Lenexa Police received a 911 call following the accident. The caller reported the accident was between 87th and 95th Streets. Officers immediately requested Johnson County Med-Act to respond to the area. The subject was located a short time later, just north of the 87th Street Parkway overpass.

Police and Johnson County Med-Act declared the subject deceased at the scene of what was only described as a "traumatic injury."

Investigators say the vehicle that struck the man, a  2007 Kia Optima, stopped at the scene and the driver was cooperative with the investigation. That driver was not injured. The driver has been identified as 55-year-old, Larry R. Gudgel of Olathe. Troopers say Gudgel was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured. Investigators transported Gudgel to the hospital for a routine post-accident blood draw. No citations have been issued following the accident.

The Lenexa Fire Department remained on the scene to assist Police with traffic control. Police had southbound traffic restricted to just one lane as they investigated.

The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate why Polidore was walking in the roadway.

Grease fire causes $15,000 worth of damages to assisted living facility

The Olathe Fire Department was called to Aberdeen Village Assisted Living and Retirement Center at 3:20 p.m. Thursday. A 911 call reported a fire in the first level kitchen area. The facility is located at 17500 W 119th Street in Olathe.

Firefighters and Olathe Police assisted in evacuations of some of the residents. Crews ordered a second alarm response due to the size of the facility and the number of residents who live on the site.

The fire is said to have been contained to the kitchen area and was extinguished by the building's sprinkler system before fire crews arrived. Crews checked attic spaces and reported that the fire had not spread into the attic or the building's roof. 


Firefighters from the Lenexa Fire Department responded on the second alarm to assist with the call.

Investigators say the fire was a grease fire and started in the facility's commercial kitchen. Damage is estimated at $15,000. No injuries were reported.
