Four teens seriously injured in rollover crash on I-435

Troopers say four teens were seriously injured when the pickup truck they were riding in rolled over near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Interstate 435 Tuesday evening in Shawnee.

Emergency crews were called to the northbound lanes of Interstate 435 just north of the Shawnee Mission Parkway bridge about 5:35 p.m.

Recorded radio traffic from police dispatchers indicated they received numerous 911 calls reporting the crash and that several people had been ejected from the vehicle.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says a 2001 Ford F-350 was driving on the entrance ramp from westbound Shawnee Mission Parkway to northbound I-435.

“The driver of vehicle one lost control on the entrance ramp,” according to KHP’s crash log. “After vehicle one left the roadway, the vehicle overturned onto I-435.”

Troopers say the driver and three passengers were not wearing seat belts and all four ejected onto the Interstate.

Johnson County Med-Act transported three of the injured to Overland Park Regional Medical Center and one to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Troopers have all injuries classified as “suspected serious injury.”

Operation 100 News has reached out to Johnson County Med-Act for more accurate conditions of the injured at the time of their transports.

The driver is a 16-year-old Shawnee resident. Two of his passengers are 15; the other is 16. One of the 15-year-olds is also a Shawnee resident. The other two passengers are both from Lake Quivira.

Troopers continue to investigate the crash.

The Lenexa Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Man critically injured in rollover crash late Saturday

A man in his 30’s was critically injured when the SUV he was driving crashed into a ditch in Shawnee late Saturday night.

Shawnee police, firefighters, and Johnson County Med-Act were called to the 14200 block of Midland Drive shortly before 11 p.m. on a reported rollover crash.

Firefighters had to remove the passenger’s door to safely extricate the driver, who was found lying across the passenger’s seat.

The man was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with critical injuries.

Recorded radio traffic indicates officers suspect alcohol may have been involved.

Midland Drive was closed between 67^th Street and 68^th Terrace for about two hours as emergency crews worked the scene.

Shawnee Police continue to investigate the crash.

Man dies after ATV collides with deer, woman remains critical

The 22-year-old man involved in an ATV crash near Vinland died as a result of his injuries on Sunday, according to Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lieutenant Steve Lewis.

Hospital officials at the University of Kansas Hospital tell my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World that the 19-year-old female remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Two people were critically injured when their ATV struck a deer in rural Douglas County early Saturday.

A driver found the ATV, on its side, in the middle of North 700 Road around 4:25 Saturday morning and called 911 for help. The crash was located between East 1600 Road and East 1650 Road, near Vinland.

The scene is approximately two and a half miles north of Baldwin City or approximately five miles south of Lawrence.

Deputies were first to arrive on the scene and found a man and a woman, both unconscious, after being thrown from the ATV.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical triaged both of the injured to be in critical condition. First responders from Baldwin City Fire and Lawrence Fire are also on scene.

A 22-year-old man was transported by ambulance to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. A 19-year-old woman was transported by ambulance to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

Life Star and other medical helicopters are grounded due to current weather conditions.

Overland Park Regional spokesperson Chris Hamele tells the Journal-World that the man remains in critical condition Saturday afternoon.

The woman is in serious condition according to Douglas County Sheriff's Office public information officer Steve Lewis.

KCK man killed after trying to outrun police in JoCo

Gardner Police and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office are investigating after a police pursuit ended in a fatal accident Wednesday morning.

Gardner Police were called to a gas station near 188th and Gardner Road just after midnight on reports of an intoxicated person driving an SUV. There was a second report of a possibly intoxicated driver in a dark-colored SUV that was traveling southbound on Gardner Road.

Officers spotted a dark-colored SUV getting on northbound Interstate 35 from Gardner Road. The driver did not stop when officers attempted a traffic stop. Gardner officers began to pursue the vehicle.

The driver turned around near 175th Street and sped off southbound on Interstate 35 around 12:10 Wednesday morning. Officers reported the SUV was driving erratically with speeds between 60 and 70 miles-per-hour as they continued in pursuit.

Master Deputy Jill Koch of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office says, "Gardner officers observed continuous erratic behavior that posed a great risk to public safety. Repeated attempts to stop the vehicle were unsuccessful."

The driver of the 1996 Toyota 4Runner then exited at Homestead Lane and continued northbound onto the property of BNSF Railway's Logistics Park Kansas City Intermodal Facility at 32880 West 191st Street.

The pursuit then left the Intermodal Facility, returned southbound on Homestead Lane and then westbound on 199th Street.

Gardner Police continued in pursuit as Sheriff's Deputies tried to get in front of the pursuit from the west side of Edgerton. Deputies were trying to get into position to use spike strips on the suspect vehicle's tires.

The suspect vehicle crashed near Mildale Farms at 35250 West 199th Street just after 12:15 a.m.. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Gardner officers reported the driver had been ejected from the vehicle and immediately requested Med-Act to respond.

Johnson County Fire District No. 1 and Johnson County Med-Act were dispatched and arrived in less than five minutes. The first fire unit to arrive at the crash scene reported the car was off of the road and on its side.

Master Deputy Koch confirmed in a news release on Wednesday, that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

A news release on Friday identified the driver as Arthur Lee Wright, 65, of Kansas City, Kansas.

The pursuit covered about 10 miles in just under 10 minutes.

Two people were transported to area hospitals following three different crashes this morning in Shawnee.

The first crash was reported around before 2:30 a.m. in the area of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Noland Road. Arriving officers reported the car was on its roof, on 62nd Terrace west of Richards Drive.

Shawnee firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act reported the person's injuries to be minor. The driver was the only occupant, and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Police at the scene would not answer any questions regarding the accident or the condition of the driver.

Major Dan Tennis tells Operation 100 that the driver's injuries were "very minor."

Officers could be seen photographing an aluminum street light pole that had been knocked down and snapped in half, between Shawnee Mission Parkway and 62nd Terrace. A fence, a speed limit sign, and a concrete retaining wall on the west side of Shawnee Cycle Plaza were also damaged in the crash.

Although officers would not confirm, it appears the Toyota Corolla was westbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway when the car jumped a curb, struck a light pole, crossed 62nd Terrace, struck a speed limit sign, crashed through a chain-link fence post and a concrete retaining wall, causing the car to roll and land on its roof in the east parking lot entrance of PowerPlay Family Entertainment Center.

The second accident was reported around 3:15 a.m. on the ramp from northbound Kansas Highway 7 to westbound 67th Street. Again, one vehicle had rolled, and came to rest off of the highway in a grassy area.

Major Tennis says, "the driver was going the wrong way on the off ramp from northbound K-7 to Shawnee Mission Parkway."

The driver of the second crash was not injured.

The third accident was reported shortly before 3:30 a.m. on northbound Kansas Highway 7, south of Johnson Drive. A vehicle left the right shoulder of the road. It is unclear what the vehicle struck. One occupant of the vehicle was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Dense fog may have contributed to the accidents on Kansas Highway 7. Shawnee and the rest of Johnson County remain under a dense fog advisory until 9 a.m. Saturday.

Major Tennis says "alcohol may be a factor in both, more so than the fog."

All three crashes remain under investigation. Shawnee Police have not released any additional information.

Two people injured in rollover accident

Olathe Police are investigating a serious accident this morning.

Emergency crews were called to the 600 block of S. Chestnut Street just after 2 a.m. Saturday. The scene is just to the north of E. Southgate Street and S. Chestnut Street.

Police arrived to report one vehicle crashed with two people possibly thrown from the vehicle.


Olathe Fire crews confirmed the vehicle came to rest on its roof on the railroad tracks.

Johnson County Med-Act reported two people with serious injuries and two people with minor injuries. Both of the people with minor injuries refused treatment at the scene.

Only one person was partially ejected from the vehicle, said to be a 21-year-old woman. She was a front seat passenger in the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt.

The vehicle was reportedly driven by a 32-year-old man. He was reportedly wearing a seat belt.

Police are investigating if alcohol was involved.

Railroad traffic has been stopped in the area until the vehicle can be removed and the tracks can be inspected.

No other information was immediately available.

Two people are critical after a rollover accident

Two people were critically injured when their vehicle left the roadway and rolled over. The vehicle came to rest on its roof in a creek.

The accident was reported shortly before 3:15 a.m. in the 25800 block of Hospital Drive in Hillsdale Township.

Fire crews from Johnson County Fire District No. 2 reported two people were injured and both were in critical condition.

A LifeFlight Eagle helicopter responded to the scene and transporting one of the injured from the scene to a Kansas City trauma center. The second person was transported by Miami County EMS to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

No other information was immediately available.

Man critical after tractor trailer crash in Prairie Village

Prairie Village Police were called to the 7700 block of Roe Avenue, near Briar Drive, shortly before 4:30 Tuesday morning.

Officers arrived to find a tractor trailer crashed, on its side, in the roadway. The driver of the truck was pinned inside.

Crews from Consolidated Fire District No. 2 and Johnson County Med-Act extricated the man and rushed him to a Kansas City, MO trauma center in critical condition.

Sources tell Operation 100 News that police are investigating the possibility that the man suffered a seizure, causing the accident. There were also reports of a possible domestic issue, involving the driver's daughter. The daughter was apparently dropped off by her father before the accident. She is currently with police and said to be unharmed.

The truck was loaded with beer, some of which broke through the trailer's roof and spilled onto the roadway.

Lenexa Police are investigating two serious injury accidents this morning.

The first crash was reported to authorities just after 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, in the area of 79th Street and Pflumm Road. Officers arrived at the scene quickly and located a vehicle that had left the south side of 79th Street and struck a tree. The driver of the vehicle was unresponsive, still inside the car.

Lenexa firefighters extricated the driver from the vehicle and he was transported by Johnson County Med-Act to an area trauma center. The driver was only described as a male with critical injuries. He was not believed to have been wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred.

Police say the man's injuries are life threatening. Officers continue to investigate what cause the accident.

The scene was on the south side of 79th Street, between Pflumm Road and Noland Road. Officers closed 79th Street to all traffic while crews worked the scene. The road was reopened to all traffic around 3:30 a.m..

Man seriously injured in single vehicle rollover

Emergency crews were called to a second accident in the area of 87th Street and Woodland Road around 2 a.m. Wednesday. This scene is about five miles from the first scene.

A caller reported a vehicle had rolled over on the 87th Street bridge that goes over the railroad tracks, just east of Woodland Road. Again, officers arrived quickly and found the vehicle had came to rest on its side

and blocking both eastbound lanes.

As Lenexa Fire and Johnson County Med-Act arrived at the scene 87th Street was completely shutdown.

A witness tells Operation 100 News that the vehicle way laying on its passenger side and the driver was held in place by his seat belt. "The truck smelled of alcohol," according to the witness.

Firefighters worked for about 15 minutes to stabilize the vehicle and safely remove the driver.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the man, said to be in his 30's, to an area trauma center with serious injuries. Police say the man's injuries are serious but, not immediately life threatening. Officers continue to investigate what caused the accident and if alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

All lanes of 87th Street were reopened as the scene was cleaned up, around 3:30 a.m..

Shawnee Police assisted with blocking off 87th Street during the initial response to the crash.

Update: Critical injuries in Anderson County accident

Update:

The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified the two men injured in this morning's accident.

Troopers say Ryan Stone, 37, of Meadville, Missouri and Isiah Jones, 55, of Poplar Bluff, Missouri were both critically injured in a single vehicle accident early Friday.

Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper say the men were riding in a 2001 International and were westbound on K-58, approximately 5 miles west of Colony, Kansas. The truck went off the right side of the roadway and struck two signs, the vehicle then crossed back to the left side of the road, where it struck a tree, in the ditch.

The vehicle was heavily damaged and both men were extricated from the vehicle by local firefighters.

Mr. Stone was transported to a Kansas City area trauma center and Mr. Jones was transported to a Topeka trauma center. Both men remained in serious condition at last check.

Anderson County authorities are investigating after two people were critically injured in a rollover accident this morning.

The accident was reported shortly after 12:30 Friday morning, on K-58 near SW Colorado, or approximately five miles west of US-169 highway, outside of Colony, Kansas.

First responders arrived to find a two-ton railroad maintenance truck with very heavy damage. Crews worked for more than 30 minutes to extricate both occupants from the truck.

Two medical helicopters responded and transported both of the injured to trauma centers for further treatement.

The intersection remained closed until around 2:30 a.m..

The accident scene is about 70 miles south of Downtown Lawrence, or 80 miles southwest of the intersection of 75th Street and Interstate 35 in Overland Park.

Law enforcement and firefighters from Allen County and Coffey County assisted Anderson County on the call.

Man killed in single car accident identified

Update:

Shawnee Police have identified the driver as James Katajwa, 26, of Shawnee.

Major Bill Hisle says, "Katajwa was westbound on 75th Street just east of Nieman Road when his car left the roadway, hit a light pole, and flipped. Katajwa was pronounced dead at the scene."

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Shawnee Police are investigating after a man was killed in a single vehicle rollover accident Thursday afternoon.

The accident was reported just before 3:10 p.m., on the northeast corner of 75th Street and Nieman Road. Police arrived to find the vehicle on its top in front of the former, VIP Car Wash.

Firefighters worked for about 15 minutes to extricate the driver from the wreckage.


The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and has only been identified as an adult male.

The Lenexa Fire Department also responded and assisted the Shawnee Fire Department at the scene.

Shawnee Police Department Major Bill Hisle says the cause of the accident is under investigation by the department's Traffic Safety Unit.

Maj. Hisle also urged the public to avoid the intersection through the rush hour as the investigation continued.

Five injured in JoCo rollover crash

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after five people were injured in a rollover accident Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred in the median of Interstate 435, south of the Renner Road bridge and north of the 79th Street bridge in Shawnee, around 6:15 a.m..

A witness tells Operation 100 News that the vehicle was northbound on Interstate 435 and left the east side of the highway near the 79th Street overpass. The vehicle then crossed the northbound lanes into the median, hit a crossover lane and rolled several times before landing near the southbound lanes.

Troopers have confirmed what a witness told Operation 100 earlier this morning. Troopers say the vehicle was a 2007 Dodge Caliber SXT and was traveling northbound on Interstate 435. As the highway curves to the left, the driver did not turn, causing the vehicle to leave the right side of the highway. The driver swerved back onto the highway and the vehicle began a counter-clockwise spin.

Troopers say the vehicle crossed all of the northbound lanes and entered the grassy median. In the median the vehicle overturned several times and one occupant was ejected. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels, just off of the southbound lanes.

Dispatchers confirm that four adults and an infant were injured in the crash. One adult has life threatening injuries. The infant and three other adults are said to have non life threatening injuries.

Shawnee Firefighters extricated two people from the wreckage. The other vehicle occupants were able to get out of the crashed vehicle on their own.

A total of five Med-Act ambulances were dispatched to the scene. All but one of those ambulances transported injured people from the scene.

Troopers say the driver of the vehicle suffered a medical condition. It is unclear if that medical condition may have contributed to the accident's cause or if the medical issue was after the crash.

The driver has been identified as a, 39-year-old, Lenexa woman. Troopers say she was wearing a seat belt. Passengers in the vehicle are aged 1, 18, 21, and 22.

Other area media reported that four people were ejected in the crash, this is false according to multiple calls to dispatchers and the preliminary accident report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Shawnee Police say the accident is being investigated by the Kansas Highway Patrol. Lenexa Police also assisted on the scene with traffic control.

Rollover crash critically injures one in Johnson County

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a serious one car accident this morning.

Emergency crews were called to a rollover accident in the 19000 block of U.S. 69 Highway at approximately 2:10 a.m., in Aubry Township. The car was reportedly traveling northbound on the highway when it left the roadway and rolled several times down an embankment.

Johnson County Fire District #2 crews found the car on its side and leaning against a shed in the backyard of an address in the 19000 block of Lowell Avenue. Firefighters estimated the car to be 100-150 feet from the highway, with "extremely heavy damage."

The driver, said to be a female in her 40's, was the only occupant of the red BMW convertible and was partially pinned under the vehicle for a short time. She suffered critical injuries and has been transported to an area trauma center for further treatment.

A source familiar with the accident tells Operation 100 News that the driver reported that she swerved to miss a skunk that was crossing the highway.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate and has not confirmed any other details.

Life threatening injuries reported in Overland Park crash

Overland Park Police are investigating following a single vehicle crash early this afternoon.

The accident was reported just after noon in the area of W. 143rd Street and Hemlock Street.

Police say that the preliminary investigation shows that the driver was traveling eastbound on W. 143rd Street and lost control. The vehicle rolled several times according to police.

The driver was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Overland Park Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit continues to investigate the accident. No other details were immediately available.

Two injured in rollover accident on Interstate 70

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating following a one vehicle accident on the Interstate 70 Turnpike in Lawrence this morning.

The accident was reported shortly before 2 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near mile marker 201.2, between the west and east Lawrence interchanges. Troopers reported one vehicle rolled over and came to rest on its top.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical units arrived on the scene to report only one vehicle involved, which had sustained heavy damage.

Initially two helicopters were requested to the scene. The second helicopter, based southeast of Kansas City, was canceled after reporting an estimate of nearly 30 minutes to arrive on the scene.

A Lawrence fire unit established a safe landing zone for the LifeStar helicopter in the Hallmark Cards production center parking lot, 101 McDonald Drive.

A male and a female, both in their early 20's, were said to have suffered serious injuries. The male possibly had a broken leg, and the female who was transported by LifeStar air-ambulance was said to have a head injury. Their injuries were said to be serious but not immediately life threatening.

The female was said to be wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, it is unclear if the male was wearing a seat belt.

The accident remains under investigation.

Driver critically injured in rollover accident; vehicle also struck a tree

Overland Park Police say they are investigating after a vehicle rolled and collided with a tree shortly at approximately 5:35 this morning.

The accident occurred in the 11500 block of Mastin Street. Police arrived on the scene to report that it appeared the vehicle had rolled and came to rest upright.

In a statement, Police Public Information Officer Gary Mason says "preliminary investigation indicates the driver was traveling at a high speed and lost control. The vehicle rolled over and struck a tree."

Officer Mason also confirms that the male driver suffered critical injuries. The man is said to be in his late 20's.

The department's Traffic Safety Unit continues to investigate.

Woman rescued after crashing vehicle into a tree and ravine

Firefighters from two area departments worked the scene of a single vehicle accident in Kansas City, Kansas this morning.

The accident was reported shortly before 2 a.m. on County Line Road between S. 59th Street and S. 63rd Street. On the Johnson County side, County Line Road is known as W. 47th Street, while S. 59th Street is Nieman Road, and S. 63rd Street is Quivira Road.

Shawnee Police arrived on the scene at 1:58 a.m., to report one vehicle had left the roadway and partially rolled over. Fire units from Kansas City, Kansas and Shawnee were both dispatched to the area.

Initial reports from the scene indicated that the vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree, and then partially rolled into a ravine.

Shawnee Fire arrived on the scene to report the involved vehicle had sustained heavy damage in the crash and was occupied by one person.

Kansas City, Kansas Fire 'Heavy Rescue 1' and Shawnee Fire 'Rescue 71' responded to the scene for assistance in stabilizing the vehicle and extricating the driver. Crews from both Fire Departments worked for just over 20 minutes to stabilize the vehicle and extricate the driver. The vehicle's airbags deployed in the accident and the driver was wearing a seat belt.

The female driver, said to be in her early 50's, sustained non-life threatening injuries. She was transported by Kansas City, Kansas EMS to a Kansas City trauma center.

Kansas City, Kansas Police are investigating if alcohol may have played a role in the accident's cause.

Johnson County teenager killed in ATV accident

One person was killed and another injured when the ATV they were riding on crashed in rural Miami County this morning.

Authorities were called to a field, just south of 395th Street and Victory Road around 3 a.m.. The accident scene is approximately one mile to the southeast of Fontana in south central Miami County. EMS personnel immediately pronounced one person deceased and another critically injured.

A LifeFlight Eagle helicopter was responded to the scene and transported a seriously injured female to a metro area trauma center. Authorities say her injuries are non-life threatening.

Miami County Authorities believe the Polaris ATV was being driven with four people on it when when it rolled, killing one person and injuring the driver. The person killed has been identified as, 17-year-old, Tyler Rathbun of Westwood, Kansas. The driver has not been identified and remains hospitalized.

A friend of Rathbun's tells Operation 100 News that Tyler was a Senior at Shawnee Mission East High School, in Prairie Village, and was also the Captain of the Soccer team.

The accident remains under investigation.

Lenexa man killed in rollover crash

Update:

Overland Park Police have identified the 20-year-old man killed in this morning's accident as John Stevens Hauk II of Lenexa, Kansas. Investigators say he was not wearing a seat belt and suffered fatal injuries in the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Friends tell Operation 100 News, Hauk was a 2010 graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School.

The Overland Park Police Department Traffic Safety Unit is investigating what caused a fatal accident this morning.

Police say they were called to northbound US 69 highway just north of Interstate 435 at 1:52 Tuesday morning.

Investigators say one car was involved and rolled after losing control on the ramp from westbound Interstate 435 to northbound US 69 highway. The driver is believed to have over corrected twice before the car rolled an undetermined number of times.

Overland Park Fire units reported the car had come to rest on its top and sustained heavy damage.

The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 20-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene. That man's identity will not been released until his family can be notified.

The northbound lanes of of US 69 were closed, at Interstate 435, as the accident is investigated. Those lanes were reopened around 4:00 a.m.. Police say the ramp from westbound Interstate 435 to northbound US 69 was reopened at 5:48 a.m..

Police identify men killed in Saturday crash

Overland Park's traffic unit is investigating after a two vehicle crash killed two men Saturday morning.

Dispatchers say the accident was reported around 5:40 Saturday morning at the intersection of 103rd Street and Nall Avenue.

First fire crews arrived on the scene to report two vehicles involved and one had rolled onto its side. Police reported both vehicles would require extrication. A fire crew reported one vehicle would require extensive extrication.

Police say a Ford F-250 pickup truck was southbound on Nall Avenue when it ran a red light and struck a Buick passenger car which was traveling westbound on 103rd Street. The collision caused the pickup truck to roll onto its side.

Authorities have identified the driver of the Ford F-250 as, 49-year-old, Wayne A. Willeford of Prairie Village and the driver of the Buick as, 77-year-old, William G. Pennington of Overland Park.

Willeford was pronounced deceased at the scene, while Pennington was transported to an area hospital where he died a short time later, according to Overland Park Police.
