Lenexa Police are investigating after a man died from a gunshot wound early Thursday morning.

The incident occurred on the south side of 87th Street Parkway and Long Street, just across the street from Lenexa Police Department headquarters.

A black 2013 Ford Focus with Missouri license plates was stopped just south of the intersection with the driver's door open.

A yellow tarp was draped over the car's interior.

At 1:19 a.m. an officer called out "shots fired" over the radio.

Master Police Officer Dan Friesen says, "a two-officer unit on patrol saw a black Ford Focus sitting in the middle of the road on Long Street, just south of 87th Street Parkway. When officers pulled up behind the vehicle they heard a single gunshot."

Johnson County Med-Act responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Police have identified the him as a 31-year-old from Kansas City, Missouri. Police have released his name, however Operation 100 News is choosing not to release it.

Friesen says, "there were no shots fired by officers and they had not contacted the man previously."

MPO Friesen has confirmed to Operation 100 News that prior to officers arriving, the Ford Focus had collided with a median at 87th Street Parkway and Rosehill Road. The vehicle ran over a median sign and left behind several large pieces of bumper and a fender well.

Police had the eastbound lanes of 87th Street Parkway closed at Rosehill Road for about 90 minutes.

Operation 100 News was at this scene for approximately an hour this morning, attempting to speak with officers at the scene and was told that no one was available to share any information.

Friesen says "typically officers on scene do not release information to media in order to avoid conflicting information being given or providing information that could compromise an investigation."

Had Operation 100 News simply been informed that this was a suspected suicide, there would not have been any reason to proceed with a report.

Operation 100 News does not typically report suicides, however as this one occurred just across the street from the Lenexa Police headquarters, in front of officers, and along busy 87th Street Parkway it is being reported.

Single vehicle crash kills driver in northern JoCo

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after a Shawnee man was killed in a single vehicle crash in Mission this morning.

Troopers say Matthew S. Doan, 33, was killed when his truck crashed just before 4 a.m.

Mission police were dispatched to check on a report of an unknown accident on the ramp from northbound Interstate 35 to northbound Interstate 635, just after 4:00 a.m. Friday.

Troopers say Doan was driving, a 2004 Chevrolet Silverardo 1500, on the ramp from southbound Interstate 35 to northbound Interstate 635 when the truck hit a guard rail.

The driver overcorrected, drove through a ditch and then went airborne across the northbound lanes of Interstate 635. The truck came to rest in the east ditch of the ramp from northbound Interstate 35 to northbound Interstate 635, according to the highway patrol's report.

Another driver reportedly witnessed the truck crash and called 911. Arriving officers immediately requested Johnson County Med-Act to respond to the scene.

Overland Park firefighters arrived at the scene to report one pickup truck with heavy damage.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The ramp reopened shortly after 7 a.m.

Officers from Merriam and Overland Park also assisted at the scene.

Missing Overland Park man found, Silver Alert canceled

UPDATE: 

Operation 100 News has confirmed that Mr. Collins has been located. A person driving in the area of 95th Street and Hardy reported a Honda Civic, with the same license plate, driving slowly on 95th Street. The driver followed the slow moving car until police could catch up. Officers are in contact with him and are working to reunite him with his family. He is currently being evaluated by Johnson County Med-Act, checking to make sure he is OK.

Overland Park Police have issued a Silver Alert for, 85-year-old, Alva 'Al' Collins.

Police say Mr. Collins told his family Friday evening the he was going to visit his wife in the area of 110th Street and Nall Avenue, but never showed up.

Mr. Collins is described as 5ft 6in tall, 140 pounds, with gray hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing black pants and a dark gray, short sleeve, button up shirt.

Collins is believed to be driving a silver 2012 Honda Civic 4-door with Kansas license plate 762CGP.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Mr. Collins is asked to call local police or the Overland Park Police Department at 913-895-6300.

Charges filed against teen involved in deadly Overland Park crash

Update:

The Johnson County District Attorney's office has charged 17-year-old Conner Estrella of Overland Park with one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of aggravated battery. The charges stem from an August 7th crash in Overland Park. Prosecutors have also filed a motion for Estrella to be tried as an adult.

Kevin Moroney, 52, was standing near a parked vehicle along the street with his girlfriend Maureen Hoag. The crash killed Moroney and critically injured Hoag.

Overland Park Police are investigating after one person was killed and another was injured in a vehicle versus pedestrian accident.

Police and fire crews were called to an address in the 8400 block of Tomahawk Road at 11:57 Thursday night.

First units arrived on the scene just after midnight to report one vehicle with major damage.

Johnson County Med-Act reported one person deceased and another with critical injuries.

Overland Park Police have called out their Traffic Safety Unit for accident investigation.

Sergeant Scott Ferguson says a black car, being driven by a 17-year-old male, was traveling southbound on Tomahawk Road. Both pedestrians were standing on the west side of the street, near a parked white car, when they were struck.

The southbound vehicle struck both pedestrians and the parked car.

Police confirm a male pedestrian was killed and a female pedestrian was seriously injured.

The driver of the black car remained at the scene with minor injuries. Police are investigating if he was impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Six vehicle accident forces closure of I-435 in JoCo

Overland Park Police and Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers are investigating after five passenger vehicles and a tractor trailer were involved in an accident early Monday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the eastbound lanes of Interstate 435 east of Quivira Road around 12:30 p.m. Monday on a reported rollover injury accident.

Overland Park Fire spokesperson Jason Rhodes tells Operation 100 News that four people were injured.

All of the injured were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.

Police closed all westbound lanes of I-435 and diverted traffic to US-69. All lanes reopened around 2:30 p.m..

OP man killed in early morning motorcycle crash

Overland Park Police are investigating the city's first fatal traffic accident of 2014.

Police were called to an address in the 15300 block of Quivira Road around 3 a.m. Tuesday on reports of a motorcycle crashed into a retaining wall.

No one is believed to have witnessed the accident. A resident in the area found a motorcycle crashed in a driveway and the rider lying in the grass on the other side of a retaining wall.

Johnson County Med-Act arrived on scene a short time later and pronounced the man dead.

Overland Park Police have identified the rider as R. "Brock" Rodgers, 24, of Overland Park. Police say he was wearing a helmet.

Officer Gary Mason tells Operation 100 that the motorcycle is a Triumph Speed Triple.

The Overland Park Police Traffic Safety Unit believes the speed was a factor in the crash and they continue to investigate exactly what happened.

Two-alarm house fire in Lawrence

Lawrence firefighters are on the scene of a house fire in the 1400 block of Kentucky Street.

The call was dispatched at 4:15 a.m. after dispatchers received a 911 call reporting the front porch of the home was on fire. A second 911 caller reported the entire front of the home was on fire.

Residents of the home, said to be three college students, were alerted by a passerby that their front porch was on fire.

Arriving fire crews reported fire visible on the front of the three story structure. Interior crews found that the fire had spread into a third floor wall and to the attic space.

All residents of the home were able to get out before emergency crews arrived.

The incident commander requested a second alarm to the scene for additional firefighters and equipment at 4:20 a.m..

An additional aerial apparatus was dispatched to the scene shortly after 5 a.m. as crews on the scene backed out of the structure to put water on the fire from the outside only.

Firefighters went back into the structure around 6:30 a.m. to continue hitting hot spots.

No injuries have been reported.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical has also requested an emergency callback for off-duty personnel to fill several Lawrence fire stations and reserve apparatus.

Silver Alert lifted for missing Douglas County man

Deputies confirm that Mr. Cranwell was located in Butler County, near the city of El Dorado. He is uninjured and arrangements are being made for him to be reunited with his family.

El Dorado is nearly two hours southwest of Douglas County.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has issued a Silver Alert for Covert C. Cranwell, 90, of Lecompton. He has the onset of dementia and left without his medications.

Authorities say Cranwell was last seen leaving his Lecompton home in the 2000 block of East 100 Road around 9 p.m. Wednesday. He was driving a gray 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with Kansas license plates 122CFP.

Mr. Cranwell is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds. He has blue eyes, white hair and was last seen wearing blue jeans and a pale striped shirt.

Family believes that he may be heading for a family home near Lyndon, Kansas. Lyndon is about 30 miles south of Topeka, in Osage County.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Douglas County Sheriff's Office at 785-832-7509 or 785-841-0007.

105-year-old woman rescued from Leavenworth County house fire

Firefighters in Tonganoxie rescued an elderly woman from her burning home just before 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Crews were called to the home at 116 East Sixth Street around 4:50 a.m..

Police arrived on the scene to report heavy smoke coming from the roof of the single story home. A family member, who lives next door, told officers that there was an elderly female in a front bedroom who was unable able to make it out on her own.

Firefighters arrived to report the fire was just inside the front door. After about five minutes, firefighters reported that the woman had been rescued from the structure and was with an EMS unit that was standing by at the scene.

Operation 100 has learned that the female is 105-years-old and she was transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

A second EMS unit has been called to the scene to standby as firefighters work to extinguish the fire.

No one else was injured.

NEW PHOTO: Police still looking for man who robbed JoCo convenience store

Shawnee Police continue to seek information regarding the robbery of the TempStop convenience store earlier this month.

On Friday, May 2nd, officers were called to the store, located at 13515 W. 63rd Street, at 1 a.m. on reports of a robbery.

The clerk told officers that an older, light-skinned black male reached over the counter and grabbed cash when the register was open, no weapon was displayed.

The suspect is described as 40-50 years old, about 5-feet tall with short gray hair and a mustache. He was last seen wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt with white drawstrings and black pants.

Later that morning, Shawnee Police Department spokesperson Major Bill Hisle told Operation 100, "the suspect acted as if he was going to make a purchase. When the clerk opened the drawer, the subject reached into the cash register and pulled out what money he could."

The man left the area in a silver sedan, which was last seen westbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway from Pflumm Road.

No one was injured in the robbery.

Olathe firefighters have rescued a woman from inside her burning home.

Firefighters were called to the address in the 2000 block of E. Mohawk Drive shortly before 7 a.m..

Initial reports indicated that two people were trapped inside.

Olathe Fire Department Captain Mike Hall says one woman was rescued from the home by firefighters. A man and the family dog were both able to get out on their own.

Both residents are said to have very minor injuries.

Crews battled heavy fire and requested a second alarm response, as the fire spread into the attic of the two story home. A Battalion Chief at the scene reports that ammunition stored inside the home was firing off due to the heat of the fire.

A total of three Johnson County Med-Act ambulances were called to the scene.

Firefighters from the Overland Park fire department are also on the scene assisting.

A neighbor tells Operation 100 News that Johnson County Med-Act is at the home frequently for various different reasons.

The Red Cross has been called to assist the three adults who were displaced by the fire.

One killed, another critical in tractor-trailer crash on I-70 in Leavenworth County

A 30-year-old Aurora, Colo., man was identified as the driver killed early Saturday morning after his tractor-trailer crashed into a Kansas Turnpike tollbooth at the Tonganoxie interchange on westbound Interstate 70.

Sergiy Angelchev died at the scene of the crash, which occurred just before 3 a.m. Saturday, according to a Kansas Turnpike Authority accident report.

Meanwhile, a turnpike authority official said Saturday that a passenger, Roman Ilyaich, 25 of Aurora, Colo., is in critical condition after being airlifted from the scene and taken to a Kansas City-area trauma center.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports two men were in the truck that hit the tollbooth at highway speeds, never slowing down before crashing. The truck's cab wrapped around the tollbooth and the engine landed about 50 yards from the tollbooth. The tollbooths that the truck hit are not manned by personnel.

Around noon turnpike officials said the terminal was down to one lane westbound because of the accident investigation and advised motorists to expect delays. The turnpike authority is still investigating the accident and expects delays as it continues to direct traffic through the toll booth's K-tag lane.

A turnpike official meanwhile said it is still not known for whom the men worked.

Firefighters and medics were dispatched to the toll plaza just after 3 a.m.. near milepost 217 for an injury accident involving a tractor-trailer.

Kansas Troopers arrived to report one person, later identified as Angelchev, had been ejected from the truck and was unconscious. A second injured person, Ilyaich, was still inside the truck cab with critical injuries. Angelchev died at the scene and Ilyaich transported to Kansas University Medical Center.

A LifeStar helicopter landed in the eastbound lanes of I-70, temporarily blocking several lanes through the toll plaza for a short time. Those lanes reopened around 4 a.m. All westbound lanes were closed before re-opening around 5:45 a.m. Lanes closed again around noon for the investigation.

At the toll plaza, both left and center westbound toll lanes are blocked and drivers must use the K-tag lane.

The westbound toll plaza's center cement barriers are demolished and there are no skid marks on the road. The cab appears to have split the barriers and wrapped itself around the tollbooth.

The truck was hauling garden hoses. Hundreds are strewn across a 50-yard area at the scene among the debris.

Troopers asked a Highway Patrol helicopter to respond to the scene after sunrise to photograph the accident scene from above.

Eight people injured in 22 vehicles accident | Numerous accidents throughout the area

Emergency crews from at least five area agencies responded on a big accident Sunday morning.

The accident was first reported just before 6:30 a.m. on the overpass from southbound Interstate 35 to to southbound U.S. 69 Highway.

Lenexa Police arrived to report 15-20 vehicles involved in an accident that was completely blocking the highway.

Firefighters from Overland Park, Lenexa and Merriam all responded when the incident was upgraded to a Level I MCI (mass-casualty incident).

Johnson County Med-Act says eight people were injured and transported to an area hospital.

Ambulances transported nearly 20, who were not injured, to a nearby fire station to keep warm.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says at least 22 vehicles were involved in the accident, least 15 of those vehicles were towed away from the scene.

Both southbound lanes reopened to traffic at 9:50 a.m. Sunday.

Other accidents:

Sunday morning's rain and snow caused traffic problems across the Kansas City area. Accidents were reported in various locations around the south side of the Interstate 435 loop, Kansas Highway 10 near De Soto and Interstate 70 near Lawrence.

Around 3 a.m., Lawrence fire medical crews, police and Kansas Turnpike troopers responded on at least four accidents on the Interstate 70 turnpike. Two people were seriously injured in a rollover accident. A total of six people were treated for minor injuries in various different accidents on I-70 in Douglas County. Just after 3 a.m., Lenexa police closed the flyover ramp from westbound I-435 to southbound I-35 following a seven vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

Around 3:15 a.m., Overland Park police were forced to close both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-435 after several accidents caused by vehicles travelling too fast over the Metcalf bridge. One of these accidents involved a vehicle crashing into the back of an Overland Park police department vehicle that was on the scene of an earlier accident. The officer was not injured. No serious injuries were reported.

At 3:20 a.m., Leawood police and fire crews, along with Kansas City, Missouri police closed all eastbound and westbound lanes of I-435 at State Line Road following several accidents and slide offs. One of the accidents involved four vehicles. No serious injuries were reported.

VIDEO: Two injured in high speed crash through a Mass Street storefront

Lawrence Police and Fire Medical crews responded on a serious car accident in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street early Saturday morning.

Crews were called about 3:10 a.m. on reports of a vehicle crashed through a storefront near 1029 Massachusetts Street, Pyramid Pizza.

Police arrived quickly and immediately reported injuries at 1025 Massachusetts Street, Strong's Antiques. Fire units arrived to confirm that one person was pinned in the vehicle and would need to be extricated. A second person was ejected from the vehicle.

Both people have serious injuries, including long bone (arms/legs) fractures.

A LifeStar helicopter picked up the driver of the vehicle at the Liberty Memorial Central Middle School landing zone. This person was only described as a 37-year-old male. He was reportedly thrown from the vehicle in the crash and suffered a possible head injury.

The second injured person, said to be a 22-year-old female, was transported by ground after being extricated from the vehicle. Medics reported that she was "extremely combative."

Both injured people were transported to the University of Kansas hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

Police believe the accident was a "high speed crash." There were no reports of anyone inside the lower level of the building when the crash occurred.

Gary Strong, owner of Strong's Antiques, tells my news partners at the Lawrence Journal-World that the vehicle was traveling north on Massachusetts Street at high speeds when it struck a concrete planter in front of his store.

Strong says the crash damaged his storefront along with glassware and antiques inside. The car's motor flew through the building in the crash and landed on a Steinway piano inside.

The residents of 1025.5 Massachusetts Street reported a smoke odor inside their apartment following the accident. Firefighters responded to that upstairs apartment and were able to determine that there was no fire. The residents were kept out of the building as a precaution, until the structural integrity of the building could be confirmed.

Police report damaged windows and railings at neighboring businesses and significant damage to a concrete planter.

Due to the large response from Lawrence Fire Medical crews, some off-duty personnel were called in to staff reserve units and handle other calls throughout the city. Lawrence Police held over their late swing shift officers to help with the accident and handling other calls for service. Those officers were allowed to go off-duty around 4:30 a.m..

Police have identified the driver that was killed in the accident as Julio Cesar Romero-Zepeda, 22, of Olathe, Kansas.

Operation 100 News has spoke to one of the people who called 9-1-1 to report the accident, Darla Williams of Gardner, Kansas. Williams says that she was on her way home from babysitting her grandson in Olathe when she came upon the crash.


Williams said, "It was so dark, I could only hear the screams and I told 911 to send at least three ambulances, maybe more."


Olathe Police have not released any other information regarding the accident's cause or any other circumstances surrounding the crash.

There were no updates available on the other victims of the crash early Tuesday afternoon.

Olathe Police are investigating if a wrong way vehicle may have caused a serious accident this morning on Interstate 35.

The crash was reported shortly before 2:30 Sunday morning in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near Sheridan Street, north of Old U.S. 56 highway.

Police arrived on the scene to report two vehicles with heavy damage and several people trapped inside of a van.



Olathe fire crews reported one of the involved vehicles had rolled over following the crash and had sustained very heavy damage. Firefighters extricated at least three people from vehicles.

Johnson County Med-Act transported three people with critical injuries and at least two others are said to have serious injuries. A total of five ambulances were involved on the call.

The injured people were transported to three different area hospitals.

At 3:52 a.m., Operation 100 News was able to confirm that one of the critically injured, a 22-year-old male, had passed away at an area hospital.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 at Santa Fe (135th Street) were closed until around 6 a.m. Sunday for the accident scene to be investigated and cleaned up.

During the clean up, a mini-van crashed into a barricade that was blocking the southbound lanes. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the driver was not injured in this secondary accident.

Woman suffers smoke inhalation during two-alarm fire

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews were called to an apartment building fire in the 200 block of Pinecone Drive early Saturday.

The fire was reported just before 2:20 a.m. at 269 Pinecone Drive. A resident reported black smoke coming from the second story of the building, but did not know what was on fire. The residents of the address reported that everyone had made it out safely. Two dogs were said to still be inside.

Lawrence Police arrived on the scene and quickly confirmed that there was black smoke coming from the building.


A responding Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical division chief upgraded the incident to a second alarm response for additional manpower.

Firefighters arrived to find black smoke pushing from the second floor windows of the two story apartment building and began to make their attack.

Crews had the fire knocked down in just under 10 minutes and reported the fire to be under control about five minutes later.

Medics transported a 44-year-old female resident suffering from smoke inhalation, to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment. No other injuries have been reported.

Firefighters located and removed one dog from the building and requested a representative from the Lawrence Humane Society be contacted.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

One person shot in Lawrence early Sunday

Lawrence Police are investigating after one person was shot early this morning.

The incident was reported around 1:25 Sunday morning in the 2300 block of Murphy Drive, just southeast of 23rd and Iowa in central Lawrence.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter called police to report that he had just shot a subject that was attempting to break into his vehicle.

Dispatchers say they received numerous 911 calls reporting gunshots heard in the area. Lawrence Police Department's call log show 18 units were assigned to the call.

The shooting victim, only described as a 20-year-old man, ran from the scene and was located by police in the 2300 block of Ridge Court.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews report the shooting victim's injuries to be serious and not immediately life-threatening. He reportedly has wounds on his right side, including his shoulder and arm. Medics transported the man to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Witnesses tell Operation 100 News that they heard three shotgun blasts, which were fired from a second floor apartment. The shotgun is said to have been firing birdshot shells.

Around 1:15 a.m. Monday, Lawrence fire crews were called to the Burger King at 1107 W. 6th Street on reports of smoke from the roof of the building. This address is on the southeast corner of 6th and Missouri Streets

Firefighters arrived and quickly found visible fire on the roof and then in the attic area of the building. Employees told arriving crews that everyone had made it out of the building.

Incident command ordered a second alarm response at 1:20 a.m..

At 1:40 a.m., crews reported that they had knocked down the bulk of the fire. Crews are making their way back inside the building to extinguish hot spots after initially fighting the fire from the exterior only.

The fire was reported to be under control shortly after 2 a.m..

Lawrence Police have requested barricades to close 6th Street between Arkansas and Maine Streets. Missouri Street between 6th and 7th is also closed.

One dead, two others injured in JoCo accident

Olathe Police are investigating following a fatal accident this morning.

Police say the accident was reported around 7:10 Friday morning near the intersection of 159th Street and Lone Elm Road, just south of Interstate 35.

The incident involved a semi-dump truck and a Lincoln Town Car. The semi T-boned the Town Car on the passenger's side of the vehicle.

Sources familiar with the accident confirm to Operation 100 News that the driver of the vehicle was an 81-year-old man. The driver's injures are said to be serious but non life-threatening. Firefighters had to extricate the driver from the Town Car. It is not believed that he was wearing a seat belt.

Police say the passenger in the Town Car was an 83-year-old, female. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene after declining further treatment.

Investigators believe the Town Car was traveling northbound on Lone Elm Road and the semi-dump truck was traveling westbound on 159th Street.

Police have closed the westbound lanes of 159th Street and the northbound lanes of Lone Elm Road.

Fully engulfed house fire in rural Douglas County

At 4:06 a.m. Palmyra Township fire was dispatched to respond on house fire at 358 E. 2073 Road. 

The address is about three miles northeast of Baldwin City.

Initial reports indicate that the resident returned home to find his residence on fire and called 911.

A Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter advised dispatchers that the structure was fully engulfed, just one minute after firefighters were dispatched. The highway patrol's helicopter had been in Johnson County assisting in the search for a man who ran from a stolen vehicle on Interstate 35 near the Gardner-Edgerton area. 

The helicopter pilot told dispatchers that his earlier area search was about nine miles to the east and they could see the 'glow' starting around 4 a.m.. When the helicopter was available from their search, they went to investigate the glow and learned that the fire had already been reported to Douglas County authorities.

Fire crews arrived within five minutes to confirm that the home was fully engulfed and crews would be using a defensive attack to keep it from spreading.

Palmyra Township fire requested a county-wide tender (water tanker) response and assistance from several township fire departments, Baldwin City fire and Wellsville Fire from Franklin County.

No injuries have been reported.
