Police release surveillance images of suspects from Saturday morning armed robbery

The Overland Park Police Department has released surveillance images of the two suspects from Saturday's armed robbery outside of a Shawnee Mission Parkway QuikTrip.

Overland Park Police were called to the QuikTrip at 7400 Shawnee Mission Parkway about 3:45 Saturday morning to investigate an armed robbery.

Recorded radio traffic indicates the driver of a taxi told police that two men, one armed with a handgun, robbed him and ran away. Both men were last seen running north from the QuikTrip parking lot.

Officers from Fairway, Merriam, Mission, and Shawnee responded to assist in holding a perimeter around the area for a K-9 search. Overland Park officers also used a drone to assist with the search.

While searching, officers were informed that one of the victim's credit cards was already being used at the QuikTrip at 4700 Lamar Avenue in Mission.

Officers in Overland Park concluded their search about 4:30 a.m.

Police investigating after men with guns disrupt baby shower at Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center

Officers from several northeastern Johnson County police departments converged
on the community center after receiving reports of an armed disturbance.

Mission Police continue to investigate after two men allegedly walked into a baby shower at the Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center with guns in their waistbands early Saturday evening.

Officers were called to the community center, located at 6200 Martway Street just after 5 p.m.

Person rescued from Sunday evening apartment fire dies overnight

A Sunday evening apartment fire in Mission remains under investigation.

Firefighters from Consolidated Fire District No. 2, the Overland Park Fire Department, along with paramedics from Johnson County Med-Act were dispatched to the Bridges at Foxridge apartments, 6909 West 51st Place in Mission, just before 6:40 p.m. Sunday.

In a news release Monday morning, Consolidated Fire District No. 2 Deputy Chief Steve Chick says the call started as a report of smoke in the building.

"As units arrived on scene, they quickly made the call for a "regular alarm" building fire response," Deputy Chief Chick said in the release. "One victim was located within minutes of entering the structure and immediately removed to the exterior of the structure for assessment."

Firefighters and Med-Act Paramedics initially found that the person was in cardiac arrest, the release says. Resuscitation the victim regain a pulse before being transported from the scene.

The person was transported by Johnson County Med-Act to the University of Kansas Hosptial's Burn Unit.

Deputy Chief Chick says the person died overnight.

The person who died is not being identified at this time.

Consolidated Fire District No. 2's Fire Marshal along with representatives from the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Officer are on scene this morning working to determine what caused the fire.

Single vehicle crash kills driver in northern JoCo

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after a Shawnee man was killed in a single vehicle crash in Mission this morning.

Troopers say Matthew S. Doan, 33, was killed when his truck crashed just before 4 a.m.

Mission police were dispatched to check on a report of an unknown accident on the ramp from northbound Interstate 35 to northbound Interstate 635, just after 4:00 a.m. Friday.

Troopers say Doan was driving, a 2004 Chevrolet Silverardo 1500, on the ramp from southbound Interstate 35 to northbound Interstate 635 when the truck hit a guard rail.

The driver overcorrected, drove through a ditch and then went airborne across the northbound lanes of Interstate 635. The truck came to rest in the east ditch of the ramp from northbound Interstate 35 to northbound Interstate 635, according to the highway patrol's report.

Another driver reportedly witnessed the truck crash and called 911. Arriving officers immediately requested Johnson County Med-Act to respond to the scene.

Overland Park firefighters arrived at the scene to report one pickup truck with heavy damage.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The ramp reopened shortly after 7 a.m.

Officers from Merriam and Overland Park also assisted at the scene.

Silver Alert canceled, missing KCK man found safe

Update:

Overland Park Police have canceled the Silver Alert for John E. Burris, 80, of Kansas City, Kansas.

Police say Mr. Burris was found in Doniphan County, Kansas, near the city of Highland around 6 p.m. Friday.

A news release says, "He was found uninjured and in good health. He was examined by paramedics as a precaution and family are now in route to pick him up."

His maroon or burgundy 1995 Ford Crown Victoria remains missing.

Highland, Kansas is approximately 90 miles from where Mr. Burris told his family that he was shopping for shoes.

Overland Park Police have issued a Silver Alert for John E. Burris of Kansas City, Kansas.

Police say Mr. Burris has Dementia and Alzheimer's. Thursday evening he told family that he was in Overland Park, somewhere alone 119th Street to purchase a new pair of shoes.

Family told police that he seemed confused and was lost trying to get back home.


Police say they believe he may have driven north on Kansas Highway 7 toward Atchinson or Leavenworth.

He is driving a maroon or burgundy 1995 Ford Crown Victoria with Kansas license plate 440BZH.

Mr. Burris is 6-foot 2-inches tall, 180 pounds, brown eyes, gray hair and a full beard. Police do not have a clothing description.

Arrest made after two Lenexa convenience stores were robbed, third robbery in Mission; photos and video

Update: Kansas City, Kansas man arrested and charged in connection with the Lenexa robbery and attempted robbery.

Lenexa Police say at approximately 4:15 a.m., the JB's One Stop Convenience Store, 13094 W. 95th Street was the scene of an attempted robbery. This address is just west of Interstate 35 on 95th Street. A news release says a lone suspect entered the store and eventually approached the clerk. The suspect demanded cigarettes. As the clerk was retrieving the cigarettes, the suspect said that he had a gun, no weapon was displayed. The clerk then told the suspect that he was calling the police. The suspect left the store with no merchandise or cash.

At 4:22 a.m., the same man from the attempted robbery, successfully robbed the Quik Trip at 11070 Pflumm Road in Lenexa. This store is located on the northwest corner of College Boulevard and Pflumm Road.

This time the suspect displayed a yellow box cutting style knife to the clerk and demanded cash and cigarettes. The clerk gave the suspect an undetermined amount of cash and the cigarettes. The suspect walked out of the store towards the west and out of sight of the clerk.

Both incidents in Lenexa involved a black male in his 20's, approximately 5' 10" tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds. He was wearing a dark stocking hat and a dark wool jacket. Police also say that a 1990's model, two door vehicle of an unknown make was seen leaving the JB's One Stop parking lot just after the attempted robbery.

Mission Quik Trip Robbery:

Mission Police are also investigating a robbery with a similar suspect description robbery was the first to occur at Quik Trip, 4700 Lamar Avenue, or just south of Interstate 35 on Lamar Avenue. Police say at approximately 1:56 a.m., a black male entered the store and demanded cash from the clerk. The clerk gave the man money from the register and the suspect left the store. He was last seen on foot in the area.

In a news release Mission Police say their suspect was described as a black male with a mustache  possibly in his early 20's, approximately 5' 10" tall and weighing 170 pounds. The man had a shirt pulled up and covering part of his face.

Lenexa and Mission Police continue to investigate whether the Mission robbery was related to the two Lenexa incidents. Anyone with information regarding any of these incidents is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

Child shot in Mission; nearby school temporarily placed on lock down.

Update:

Mission Police say the teenager and the victim are cousins. The 6-year-old victim is expected to recover from her injuries. Police continue to investigate why the teenager had a handgun.

Police say the case will be forwarded to the Johnson County District Attorney's office who will decide if any charges are filed.

Authorities confirm to Operation 100 News that a child was shot by a teenager in Mission this morning.

The incident occurred in the 6000 block of Martway shortly after 11 a.m.. The child is said to be in serious condition.

Initial reports indicate the shooting to be accidental in nature and that the firearm was recovered and secured at the scene.

A source familiar with the incident tells Operation 100 News that Shawnee Mission Horizons High School, located at Johnson Drive and Lamar, was placed on lock down as a precaution. That lock down was lifted before 12:15 p.m..

Mission Police quickly established a perimeter in the area and used a K-9 from the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department to search the area for the suspect. Multiple agencies assisted Mission Police with the search for the 14-year-old suspect. The immediate searches of the area ended without a suspect being located. He was located and taken into custody at 12:10 p.m., just a short distance from the scene

The child victim is said to a 6-year-old girl, with a single gunshot wound to the lower leg. She has been transported to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

The suspect is described as a 14-year-old, Hispanic male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and possibly did not have shoes. Again, he was apprehended just after 12:10 p.m. a short distance from the scene.

12 people arrested in overnight check lane

Mission Police say they checked 335 cars and tested 61 drivers during this morning's DUI check lane. A total of 12 arrests were made, including six for driving under the influence, two for driving while impaired and six for six for drug related offenses.

A news release this morning did not specify how many of those violations resulted in citations or what other violations may have been cited during the check lane.


The check lane was open from 10 p.m. until 3 a.m. and included officers from Mission, Merriam, Olathe, Prairie Village, Overland Park, Gardner, Spring Hill, and Lenexa. Deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and Troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol also assisted in the operation.

In a statement, Captain David Moloy of the Mission Police Department says, "the effectiveness of sobriety checkpoints lies not only in the fear of being arrested, but also in the number of people who plan in advance to take cabs home after drinking. This has truly made our streets safer by reducing the number of intoxicated drivers on our roadways."

Careless smoking cited as cause for apartment fire

Investigators say careless smoking is likely to blame for sparking the fire, which displaced 22 residents.

Original report:

Firefighters from two area departments battled an apartment fire late Tuesday evening.

Crews were called to the Hillsborough Apartments, 5413 Foxridge Drive, around 8:40 p.m. after dispatchers received multiple 911 calls about fire in the building.

Firefighters arrived to report heavy fire showing from the building. Crews from Consolidated Fire District No. 2 of Northeast Johnson County and the Merriam Fire Department worked for just over an hour to get the fire under control.

Investigators say eight units sustained damage, four of which were heavily damaged. A total of 22 residents were displaced by the fire, including two children. The Red Cross is on scene to provide those residents with assistance.

No injuries were reported.

One person killed in a single vehicle accident

Prairie Village Police are investigating what caused a single vehicle accident this morning.

Police and fire crews were called to the 6700 block of Roe Avenue around 2:10 a.m.. Mission Police had been checking the area following reports of a suspicious vehicle in their city and were first to arrive at the crash scene. Officers reported that the driver appeared to be unresponsive.

Johnson County Med-Act and Consolidated Fire District No. 2 arrived on the scene to report the accident involved one vehicle which was heavily damaged in a front yard. Crews pronounced the male driver dead at the scene a short time later.

Police say the vehicle, a white Suzuki Forenza, was traveling southbound on Roe Avenue when the driver lost control, left the roadway and struck a tree.

Officers are also investigating the possibility that the crashed vehicle is the same one that Roeland Park and Mission officers were looking for following a report of a suspicious vehicle near 51st Street and Roe Boulevard. There are also reports that the vehicle may be stolen.

The Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is assisting with the crash investigation.

Prairie Village Police dispatchers say that Roe Avenue remains closed as the investigation continues.

No other details were immediately available.

Toddler shot in Johnson County

Police say a 3-year-old boy was accidentally shot yesterday afternoon, January 31, 2013, inside an apartment in the 6900 block of W. 52nd Street.

Mission Police say the boy's father was preparing to clean his Glock 9mm handgun. The gun was loaded and left unattended within reach of the young boy.


While the father's back was turned, the boy reached the firearm and pulled it towards himself. While doing so, the firearm discharged. The round traveled through the boy's forearm, into his abdomen and out of his lower body.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the boy to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, in critical condition. As of Friday morning, Police say the boy is now in stable condition.

Police have sent their investigation report to the Johnson County District Attorney's Office, who will review the case and determine if charges are filed. The father is not in custody.

Mission Police are also reminding the public of important firearm safety tips:

• Treat all firearms as if they are loaded
• Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction
• When handling or cleaning a gun, adults should never leave the gun unattended
• Lock the unloaded gun in a secure location. Use a firearm safe, locked box or a trigger or chamber lock to secure firearms. Hiding a gun is not enough to keep it out of reach of chlidren.
• Lock the ammunition and store it apart from the gun.

Mission Police and Project Child Safe have cable-style gun locks available for free to Mission residents upon request. Additional information about Project Child Safe can be found on their website.

Shotgun wielding victim chases burglary suspect

Officers from at least four departments searched for an auto burglary suspect this morning in Merriam.

Police were called to the 8300 block of W. 60th Street around 3:45 a.m.. A caller reported that her husband was chasing a man who was seen inside of a parked vehicle. While Merriam officers were responding on the call, Dispatchers reported that the husband was armed with a gun and chasing the suspect away. Dispatchers reported hearing shots being fired over the phone line.

Merriam Police requested assistance from surrounding agencies including; Mission, Overland Park, and Shawnee. Responding officers established a perimeter around the area to contain the suspect.

The victim of the auto burglary, armed with a shotgun, was located about a block away from his residence. Officers secured the weapon and began interviewing the victim regarding the incident.

The suspect was described as a white male with a medium to heavy build, he is said to have a "scruffy" beard and was wearing a dark red flannel coat and dark pants. He was last seen running west towards Antioch Road.

Shawnee Police had their K-9 unit at the scene and searched the area for the suspect. The area search was concluded at 4:50 a.m., with the suspect remaining at large.

No injuries have been reported and Police continue to investigate.

Suspect in fatal shooting found dead in KCMO

Mission Police say this morning's disturbance was a dispute between two brothers.

Officers were called to 5799 Broadmoor at about 7:14 this morning. Arriving units located, 57-year-old, Todd A. Pruitt of Shawnee, shot in the parking lot. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Investigators say the suspect is Todd's brother, Robert Pruitt, 58 of Merriam. Witnesses reported Robert fleeing the scene in a medium blue Ford Fiesta. That vehicle, a rental car, had been reported stolen.

Around 12:20 p.m., officers searching a park in the area of Interstate 435 and Holmes in Kansas City, Missouri, located the suspect, Robert Pruitt, who had taken his own life.

Police say that the family has been notified. No other details are currently being released.

Mission Police are investigating a shooting this morning.

Police were called to the area of Johnson Drive and Broadmoor Street at 7:15 a.m. on what was initially reported as an armed disturbance. Officers located a subject laying in the parking lot of an office building at 5799 Broadmoor Street with multiple gunshots wounds.

The victim is said to be a male in his late 40's or 50's with as many as five gunshot wounds. Police confirm the victim has died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the forehead and at least three to the chest. Police say they believe the victim knew his attacker.

Officers have confirmed the suspect is a white male in his 40's, approximately 6 feet tall, 180lbs. The suspect reportedly fled in a blue Ford Fiesta hatchback with Illinois license plates. The vehicle fled northbound from the scene on Broadmoor. Police say they have a lead on a suspect, no other details are currently being released. Police say they have several witnesses to the incident.

Police ask anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Mission Police or the TIPS Hotline 816-474-TIPS (8477).

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigators are assisting with the investigation.

Police from across Johnson County respond to assist Overland Park Officer

Overland Park, Kansas Police were called to the Oak Park Mall, at 11149 W 95th Street, shortly before 5:30 a.m. Saturday after Mall Security found a large crowd had gathered near the north Barnes & Noble Bookstore entrance to the mall. Security believed the crowd to have gathered in anticipation of a new Nike "Kevin Durant shoe" being released later this morning.

Police arrived on scene to find a "large crowd" with numerous subjects attempting to hide from officers. Those officers requested emergency assistance from surrounding agencies. An "Assist the Officer" tone sounded for Police across Johnson County.

A Law Enforcement source tells Operation 100 News, "Officers as far away as Gardner, approximately 14 miles away by car, responded to assist."

Overland Park received assistance from the following jurisdictions, just to name a few; Lenexa, Shawnee, Merriam, Mission, Gardner, and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

Officers reported the majority of the subjects were cooperating with officers, however one person was taken into custody. Mall Security reported several subjects hiding in and near dumpsters, a few even reportedly attempted to climb into a trash compactor to avoid being seen by authorities. 

Police swarmed the entire mall building's exterior and checked all of the entrances, again several subjects were seen trying to enter the mall through various doors.

Assisting officers were allowed to clear from the area about 10 minutes after the assist the officer tone sounded.

No injuries were reported.

As of 7 a.m., Police will only say that the release of the new Nike basketball shoe has been pushed back until 10 a.m..

Check lane announced and results from last week's efforts

The Overland Park Police Department announced that they will be conducting a DUI Check Lane, Friday night into early Saturday morning, May 11-12, 2012.

Police say they will have assistance from other local law enforcement agencies including; Lenexa, Merriam, Mission and Olathe.

A statement released Wednesday afternoon encourages people to designate a sober driver.

A similar check lane held last Friday night, May 4th, by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, checked 362 cars. Deputies say they made 12 DUI arrests, two drug arrests, 1 for transporting an open container and one for driving while suspended.

The Olathe Police Department's Traffic Unit conducted a driver's license check lane and saturation patrol last Saturday night, May 5th. A statement released by Olathe police says that Officers issued 68 traffic citations during the effort, 37 of those citations were for no driver's license. Four were for driver's license suspensions, eight seat belt violations, two DUI arrests and two narcotics arrests.

Funding for most of these efforts is provided by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), designed to reduce alcohol related crashes in the State of Kansas

KDOT says, across the State of Kansas, fatality accidents are down 26.2% from the same time last year with much of the credit going to enforcement of the primary seat belt law and DUI enforcement.

April 3rd - Spring General Elections in Johnson County

Today is the Spring General election in several cities in Johnson County. Cities of Leawood, Mission, Prairie Village and Westwood will all go to the polls today. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m..

Leawood and Mission voters will elect four Council Members to four year terms. Prairie Village voters will elect six Council Members to four year terms. Shawnee voters will elect a Mayor and four Council Members to three year terms due to an ongoing transition to an odd year election cycle. Westwood voters will elect a Mayor and two Council Members At-Large to four year terms.

Jackson County, Missouri Prosecutors have charged, 24-year-old Olathe resident, Casey Allen Cordell following the early morning car chase that began in Johnson County. Prosecutors say Cordell was behind the wheel of the stolen red Honda Accord that collided with a KCMO Water Department at 18th and Prospect.

Mission, Kansas Police say that they discontinued their pursuit as the vehicle crossed from Kansas into Missouri. Officers from Fairway and Westwood, both in Kansas, continued in pursuit until they lost the suspect vehicle near Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

A short time later an unmarked Kansas City, Missouri Police car was nearly struck by the same vehicle at Armor Boulevard and Broadway. According to Kansas City, Missouri Police, the officer made a U-turn attempting to catch up with and follow the vehicle. Emergency equipment was not activated and the officer did not catch up with the speeding vehicle until after it had crashed with a Water Department pickup truck.

On Thursday, Casey Allen Cordell was charged with one count of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and one count of second-degree assault. Prosecutors requested that Cordell be held on a $250,000 bond. Prosecutors say Cordell is responsible for the death of, 26-year-old, Christopher Ford who was a passenger in the stolen vehicle.

Friday Morning, Kansas City, Missouri Police now say the second passenger in the stolen vehicle, 19-year-old, Christian M. Howard who was critically injured in the crash, has passed away as a result of his injuries. Prosecutors are reevaluating the current charges at this time, according to a spokesperson.

The driver of the Water Department truck, 51-year-old, Keith Burris is said to have suffered minor injuries in the crash.



Authorities say the red Honda Accord was stolen from an address in Olathe, Kansas and the license plate was also stolen from an address in Lenexa, Kansas.

Court records show that Casey Cordell was released by the Kansas Department of Corrections in December 2011. He served 18 months for drug and theft related offenses. He also has previous run-ins with Johnson County, Kansas law enforcement which include charges of Domestic Battery, and Fleeing/Eluding a Police Officer.

Minutes after 2 a.m. Thursday morning, Mission Police began pursuing a red Honda Accord believed to be displaying a stolen Kansas Veterans license plate. Police attempted to initiate a traffic stop and the vehicle fled eastbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway near Mission Road. The vehicle's speed was reported to be nearing 65 miles per hour. Mission Police say their officer discontinued his pursuit just after crossing into Missouri.

Officers from Fairway and Westwood, both in Kansas, continued in pursuit the vehicle in Kansas City, Missouri. The chase wound through Kansas City, Missouri, eventually making it's way to the area of Children's Mercy Hospital around 2:20 a.m.. Kansas officers lost sight of the vehicle in that area and after passing their information on to Kansas City, Missouri Police, they returned to Kansas.

A short time later, a Kansas City, Missouri Police Officer, in an unmarked vehicle, spotted the same vehicle and began following. Police say that officer was only "observing the vehicle" and not in pursuit. Police also say that the suspect vehicle was involved in a crash with a Kansas City, Missouri Water Department truck at East 18th Street and Prospect Avenue.

The suspect vehicle was occupied by four individuals. One passenger in that vehicle was killed in the crash. Another passenger is said to be in extremely critically condition and had to be extricated from the car. The driver of the suspect vehicle and the driver of the Water Department truck both sustained minor injuries.

Police say the license plate on the vehicle was reported stolen from an address in Lenexa and the vehicle had been stolen from an address in Olathe. Several guns were also reportedly located in the vehicle after the crash.

Police continue to investigate the incident.

One in custody following high speed car chase

Mission Police found themselves involved in a high speed pursuit with a possibly stolen truck early this morning. Police say at 3:07 a.m. Tuesday, an Officer on patrols spotted a red Dodge Ram pickup truck near Broadmoor Street and W 58th Street in Mission. When the Officer attempted to stop the truck, the vehicle took off southbound towards Johnson Drive.

The driver turned westbound onto Johnson Drive and increased his speed to more than 60 miles per hour passing through Overland Park. As the vehicle continued on Johnson Drive into Merriam, a dispatcher reported to the pursuing Officers that the vehicle was reported stolen from an address in Kansas City, Kansas. Speeds reached 65 miles per hour as the driver crossed Antioch road and then under the Interstate 35 bridge.

The chase then crossed into Shawnee with speeds still around 60 miles per hour and westbound on Johnson Drive. At Quivira road, the chase turned north, with speeds reaching nearly 80 miles per hour before crossing W 55th Street. Chasing Officers continued into Kansas City, Kansas, still northbound on Quivira, which becomes S 63rd Street in Kansas City.

Just north of S 63rd Street and Gibbs road, the chase came to an end when the driver stopped and was taken into custody without further incident. The chase lasted just over 12 minutes, covering a distance of just over five and a half miles and passing through five cities. Mission Police were the only agency directly involved in the pursuit.

The male driver was wanted on several charges out of a neighboring jurisdiction and now faces additional charges directly related to the chase, including attempt to flee and elude. He is yet to be formally charged in Johnson County Court. The stolen vehicle was recovered and towed from the scene where the pursuit ended. No traffic collisions or any injuries were reported.

Rollover accident injures one in Johnson County

At 3:20 p.m. Saturday afternoon, a rollover injury accident was dispatched on northbound Interstate 35 just south of Lamar Avenue in Mission.

Crews arrived on the scene about three minutes after being dispatched. The first unit on the scene reported that one vehicle was involved and had came to rest on its side.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says that 34-year-old, Jennifer Zakotnik was driving a 2002 GMC SUV northbound on Interstate 35 when she "for unknown reason" lost control and left the side of the roadway. The vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest on the shoulder of the Interstate. Her injuries are said to be serious. Fire crews also had to extricate Zakotnik from the vehicle. She was transported to an area hospital by Johnson County Med-Act.

The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department also responded on the same accident. Crews determined the accident to be in Johnson County.
