Two people escape after being alerted of fire by neighbors

A neighbor alerted two adults that their home had caught fire Thursday evening in Overland Park.

Firefighters from Overland Park and Lenexa were called to the home at 8901 West 93rd Street just after 7 p.m.

Overland Park Fire Department Media Manager Jason Rhodes says firefighters arrived to report heavy fire visible from the split-level, single-family home.

“Crews began an offensive fire attack on exterior fire before transitioning to an interior attack, where they found significant fire in the attic of the home,” Rhodes said. “It took about 40 minutes to bring the fire under control as there were several hard to reach pockets of fire that required significant work to access.”

Both residents escaped without injury. The home sustained significant fire and smoke damage according to the fire department. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

“The exact cause of the fire is under investigation, but the residents reported lighting the fireplace and shortly thereafter being called by neighbors who told them their house was on fire,” Rhodes said. “The residents said they were aware of slight damage to the chimney and that they intended to have it repaired soon.”

The Red Cross will be assisting the displaced residents.

“Overland Park Fire hopes this unfortunate incident can serve as a reminder to the rest of us that as temperatures drop and we begin using heat sources to warm our homes, we should have furnaces and chimneys inspected annually by trained professionals,” Rhodes said.

Eight displaced by Saturday afternoon duplex fire in Shawnee

Eight people are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross after their duplex was heavily damaged by fire Saturday afternoon. At least three children were among the displaced.

Firefighters from Shawnee, Overland Park, and Lenexa were dispatched to the fire at 11319 West 71st Terrace just before 2 p.m.

Arriving firefighters found heavy fire coming from the garage of the two-story building.

Shawnee Fire Marshal Corey Sands says an unknown man alerted the residents in the western half of the duplex by pounding on the back of the house and breaking several windows. Sands says the broken window likely contributed to the rapid growth of the fire.

Firefighters worked for about 20 minutes to get the majority of the fire knocked down.

All residents and their pets escaped safely.

Johnson County Med-Act called in their firefighter rehabilitation unit due to the hot weather. No firefighters were injured.

As of Saturday evening, Fire Marshal Sands said investigators had concluded that the fire started in the garage on the west side of the building, but were still working to determine an exact cause.

A total of six fire rigs responded to the call.

Four people displaced by early-morning fire

A fire in a Eudora home displaced three adults and one child early Monday morning.

Eudora police and firefighters were dispatched to the two-story house at 918 Church Street at 12:56 a.m. A resident of the home called 911 reporting a fire in a bedroom.

Police officers were on the scene quickly and ran into the home after learning that one of the residents was still inside. The officers were able to get the resident to go outside.

Firefighters arrived to report light smoke visible from one side of the house.

Radio traffic from firefighters indicated they found a mattress on fire in an upstairs bedroom.

Firefighters worked for about 15 minutes to extinguish the fire.

Medics checked on one resident and two police officers for possible smoke inhalation. All refused transport to a hospital.

The Red Cross has been called to assist the displaced residents.

Fire investigators determined that there were no smoke detectors on the floor where the fire started.

The Eudora City Fire Department posted on their Facebook page reminding followers that free smoke detectors are available by calling 785-542-3653 for an appointment.

Careless smoking cited as cause for apartment fire

Investigators say careless smoking is likely to blame for sparking the fire, which displaced 22 residents.

Firefighters from two area departments battled an apartment fire late Tuesday evening.

Crews were called to the Hillsborough Apartments, 5413 Foxridge Drive, around 8:40 p.m. after dispatchers received multiple 911 calls about fire in the building.

Firefighters arrived to report heavy fire showing from the building. Crews from Consolidated Fire District No. 2 of Northeast Johnson County and the Merriam Fire Department worked for just over an hour to get the fire under control.

Investigators say eight units sustained damage, four of which were heavily damaged. A total of 22 residents were displaced by the fire, including two children. The Red Cross is on scene to provide those residents with assistance.

No injuries were reported.

Severe Weather Awareness Week 2012

In 2011 there were 68 tornadoes in Kansas, three people were killed and seven others injured. The first tornado  of the 2011 season was an EF0 on February 27th in Cowley county and the last of the year was and EF1 on October 8th in Haskell county.

March 12-16, 2012 is this year's Severe Weather Awareness Week in Kansas, conducted by the Kansas Division of Emergency Management and local emergency management agencies throughout the state. The National Weather Service says, the 2012 severe weather season has already become quite active across the country so it is imperative you prepare now. Severe Weather Awareness Week is a week when the public is encouraged to review their severe weather safety plans.

• Monday, March 12th is "Preparedness Day." The National Weather Service suggest three simple steps to complete. First, Identify the severe weather hazards you may face. Second, Set up your plan. Third, Practice your plan. More information on these three steps. 

• Tuesday, March 13th is "Tornadoes Day." Emergency Management agencies throughout Kansas will be taking part in a Tornado Safety Drill at 1:30 p.m. local time. Outdoor warning sirens will sound and the public, including schools and businesses, are encouraged to put their tornado safety plans into action as if there was a tornado warning issued. • Wednesday, March 14th is "Flash Flood Day." In the past 10 years, flooding has accounted for 14 deaths and $41 million in damages in Kansas alone. "Turn around, Don't Drown!" More information on Flood Safety.

• Thursday, March 15th is "Thunderstorm Day." All severe thunderstorms have the potential to produce damaging winds and large hail. Winds and hail can and do severely damage property every year in Kansas. More information on Hail and Damaging Winds.

• Friday, March 16th is "NOAA Weather Radio Day." Outdoor warning sirens are intended to provide tornado warnings only for those who are outdoors. Outdoor sirens may not wake you in the night and alert you of approaching severe weather. A NOAA Weather Radio can alert you to severe storms. NOAA Weather Radios are received from the National Weather Service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Metropolitan Emergency Managers Committee (MEMC) partnered with Midland Radio and Price Chopper, launched Project Community Alert (PCA) in 2002, to offer NOAA All-Hazard Weather Radio Receivers to the public at-cost. 2-Alarm apartment building fire in Shawnee

Just after 8:20 p.m., Shawnee firefighters were called to investigate reports of an apartment building fire at building 7606-7608 Goddard Street, Fox Run Apartments.

As fire crews began to arrive in the area, they reported smoke was visible. Once crews reached the building, inside the apartment complex, smoke was visible from the two story apartment building. A short time later, those same crews reported fire was now showing through the roof.

A 2nd-Alarm response was requested just before 8:45 p.m.

Shawnee Fire Department, Fire Prevention Officer, Corey Sands, says Firefighters rescued two people from second floor balconies using ground ladders. Both people were reported to have minor injuries, they were treated on the scene and released. No other injuries were reported.



Sands also says residents of 24 units were displaced by the fire. 12 of those units sustained significant damaged in the blaze. The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage is now estimated at $750,000.

Firefighters from Merriam, Overland Park and Lenexa assisted Shawnee Fire on the scene. The Johnson County Emergency Communications Center Mobile Command Post also responded to the scene.

Two fire crews remained on the scene until around 4:30 a.m., extinguishing hot spots.

Investigators will return to the site this morning to continue the investigation.
