Two detained following nearly four hour manhunt

Law enforcement officers from at least seven different agencies searched for a suspect in an early morning burglary and at least one vehicle theft.

Around 1:40 a.m., Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies attempted to stop a white Chevrolet Tahoe that had been reported stolen. The vehicle crashed through a fence and took off southbound on Metcalf  Road near 199th Street.

Deputies discontinued their pursuit as the driver turned off all of the vehicle's lights and continued speeding into Miami County, still on Metcalf.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office confirms they were called to a home near 255th Street and Metcalf Road around 2 a.m. after a resident reported had struggled with an unknown man in his garage. The unknown man fled in the resident's tan Acura SUV. A deputy responding to the call quickly located the Acura SUV northbound on Metcalf Road and began to pursue it near 331st Street.

The pursuit went off road and into a field just south of 227th Terrace in Wea Township. The suspect crashed into a tree, heavily damaging the stolen SUV. As the deputy drove to the crash scene, he reported the suspect was running eastbound into the field and the vehicle was on fire.

Miami County Deputies requested assistance from Johnson County agencies to set up a large perimeter in the area.

Deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, along with officers from numerous Johnson County departments including; Gardner, Leawood, Olathe, Overland Park and Spring Hill.

Those agencies surrounded an area from Metcalf Road east to Rockville Road (Nall in Johnson County) and from 223rd Street south to 231st Street. At least two K-9 units were brought in to search the area.

After about an hour of searching, around 1:50 a.m., a man turned himself in to deputies near the vehicle fire, where the search started.

Deputies arrested a second man in the 21000 block of Metcalf Road for an outstanding warrant. Johnson County Deputies say he was not related to the car chase.

Officers continued to hold their perimeter positions as the area was checked for the possibility of other suspects. A resident in the area reported his dogs had barked at someone in the area. Around 5:00 a.m., all agencies released perimeter positions.

Miami County officials say only one subject was involved in the car chase. The suspect has not been officially identified. Deputies say he was booked on several charges including burglary.

The white Chevrolet Tahoe that was involved in the Johnson County pursuit, was recovered abandoned near the Miami County home where the Acura SUV was stolen.

Two people are critical after a rollover accident

Two people were critically injured when their vehicle left the roadway and rolled over. The vehicle came to rest on its roof in a creek.

The accident was reported shortly before 3:15 a.m. in the 25800 block of Hospital Drive in Hillsdale Township.

Fire crews from Johnson County Fire District No. 2 reported two people were injured and both were in critical condition.

A LifeFlight Eagle helicopter responded to the scene and transporting one of the injured from the scene to a Kansas City trauma center. The second person was transported by Miami County EMS to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

No other information was immediately available.

Silver Alert canceled after missing man found dead

Update:

A Silver Alert was issued late Monday for a missing 92-year-old, Earl "Andy" Anderson.

This morning Paola Police say the Silver Alert has been canceled after he was found dead less than a mile from the nursing home that he walked away from. Officials say he was located near the railroad tracks.

No other details were immediately available from authorities.

Earl "Andy" Anderson is said to have walked away from a nursing home in Paola on Monday. The nursing home is the Country Club Estates at 2 Lewis Drive. He was last seen around 7:30 Monday evening according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

He suffers from Dementia and easily becomes confused.

Anderson is a white male, 5 feet 5 inches tall, 167lbs, with gray hair. He was last seen wearing a light gray sweatshirt, suspenders, dark colored pants, dark coat and glasses. He does not have access to a vehicle.

As of 12:25 a.m., there was a search in progress. Paola Police and Fire Department, along with several Search and Rescue K-9 from Johnson County were searching the area where he was last seen.

Shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday, Police have called off the search for the night, with plans to resume at 7 a.m.. A source familiar with the search tells Operation 100 News that there is a group headed to Paola from Wichita to help when the search resumes in the morning.

Johnson County teenager killed in ATV accident

One person was killed and another injured when the ATV they were riding on crashed in rural Miami County this morning.

Authorities were called to a field, just south of 395th Street and Victory Road around 3 a.m.. The accident scene is approximately one mile to the southeast of Fontana in south central Miami County. EMS personnel immediately pronounced one person deceased and another critically injured.

A LifeFlight Eagle helicopter was responded to the scene and transported a seriously injured female to a metro area trauma center. Authorities say her injuries are non-life threatening.

Miami County Authorities believe the Polaris ATV was being driven with four people on it when when it rolled, killing one person and injuring the driver. The person killed has been identified as, 17-year-old, Tyler Rathbun of Westwood, Kansas. The driver has not been identified and remains hospitalized.

A friend of Rathbun's tells Operation 100 News that Tyler was a Senior at Shawnee Mission East High School, in Prairie Village, and was also the Captain of the Soccer team.

The accident remains under investigation.

Domestic disturbance call results in one man's death

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been called to investigate after a domestic disturbance this morning in Miami County turned fatal. A statement released this morning has identified the deceased man as 32-year-old, Travis L. Maupin.

Authorities confirm the Osawatomie Police Department responded on a report of a domestic disturbance in the 1100 block of Chestnut Avenue shortly before 1:30 this morning. Officers found a female who reported she had been strangled during a disturbance with Mr. Maupin.

Maupin had barricaded himself inside a home. Osawatomie Police requested assistance from the Miami County Sheriff's Office at the scene. As that backup was arriving, Maupin emerged from the residence and ran from officers on foot.

Officers caught up with Mr. Maupin about a block away from the scene, where he continued to resist arrest. One officer deployed a Taser and Maupin was taken into custody. Prior to being transported to jail, officers reported that Maupin had become unresponsive.

Miami County EMS was already on the scene treating the female who was injured in the initial disturbance. Medics reported Maupin had stopped breathing and requested a second ambulance respond "emergency" to the scene on Chestnut. He was rushed to Miami County Medical Center, where he later died.

A statement released this morning says it is normal protocol for the KBI to be brought in to investigate a death that occurs while a subject is in police custody.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Maupin was discharged, at the completion of his sentence, from the Lansing Correctional Facility in December 2008. He was convicted in Anderson County, Kansas on charges of Forgery and Aggravated Battery from 2006.

Miami County Sheriff's Office confirms train derailment

The Miami County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that around 2:15 a.m., Wednesday, approximately 22 rail cars derailed east of Osawatomie.

A statement released this morning by the Sheriff's Office says the Union Pacific train was carrying grain when it partially derailed just to the south of the intersection of 347th Street and Lookout Road. Two or three of the 22 derailed rail cars are said to have fallen into the Marais Des Cygnes river.

Officials say that due to the location of the derailment, it is not causing any traffic issues, and no roads have been closed.

A spokesperson for Miami County EMS confirms to Operation 100 News that there were no reports of injuries.

Weather: HIGH RISK of severe storms today

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, Oklahoma has stuck with their earlier prediction of "Life-Threatening High Risk" of severe weather for Saturday.

The highest risk area for severe weather today is across most of central and eastern Nebraska, parts of north central Kansas and western Iowa. There is also a high risk for later this afternoon and evening for parts of south central Kansas and north central Oklahoma.

Areas included in the "Moderate Risk" include the remainder of central and eastern Nebraska, western Iowa, northwestern Missouri, central and eastern Kansas, along with parts of northern and central Oklahoma.

A slight risk area includes a large portion of the central and southern plains, from Texas north to southern parts of Minnesota and South Dakota.

Maps: Areas within the black hatching are considered the most likely areas for the activity to occur.

The SPC predicts that weather conditions should be favorable for "supporting long-lived supercells capable of producing strong tornadoes" for areas of Kansas, Oklahoma and stretching into north central and northwestern Texas. Forecasters also warn of the potential for strong wind gusts in excess of 70 miles per hour and very large hail of 2 inches in diameter or greater.

Anyone living within this region should insure that they have a way to receive severe weather warnings late Saturday afternoon and into the overnight hours, including while they are asleep. Please do not rely solely on outdoor warning sirens. 


Remember to charge cell phones in advance of the storm. After the storm remember that using text messaging and social media is much easier on wireless (cell phone) networks. Wireless calling consumes more bandwidth than text messaging. Using a wireless call for a non-emergency conversation may be enough to keep someone who needs emergency assistance from easily accessing 911 to get the help they need. If you are not in immediate danger please consider using text messaging or social media to inform family and friends that you are safe. 

Those located within the predicted areas are encouraged to stay tuned to local media and/or NOAA Weather Radios and have a safety plan in place as this is a potentially deadly situation.

Weather: Violent tornado outbreak likely this weekend

This is not something that I normally report on but, I believe this is going to be significant enough that an early heads up will be useful.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, Oklahoma has issued a "High Risk" of severe weather for their Day 2 (Saturday) forecast period. This is an extremely rare occurrence for the SPC to issue a "High Risk" in a Day 2 forecast.

Anyone living within the black hatched areas, of the second map, should expect severe weather Saturday evening into early Sunday morning.

The SPC warns of the potential for; very large hail of 2 inches in diameter or greater, strong wind gusts in excess of 70 miles per hour, and potentially long track tornadoes. This includes areas of Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. The highest risk areas are expected to be along Interstate 35 from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma extending north to near Salina, Kansas. Wichita, Kansas is also within the highest risk area. Areas of Kansas between Salina and Kansas City should be prepared for the approaching storms. This includes Lawrence, Emporia, Ottawa, and the Kansas City area.

Storms are expected to begin in the area by late afternoon Saturday and last through the evening and overnight hours as they move East/Northeast. The storms are expected to maintain their severe potential after dark, making this storm especially dangerous.

Crossover on US-69 leads to head on fatality accident

The Kansas Highway Patrol has now identified the driver killed in this accident as 57-year-old, Scott E. Klein of San Clemente, California. Klein was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The other driver has been identified as 45-year-old, Marilyn S, Nickell of Drexel, Missouri. Nickell was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas where she is listed in stable condition.

Troopers say they are still investigating why Nickell's 1997 GMC Safari mini-van crossed the median and drove into oncoming traffic. A preliminary accident report shows that after crossing the center median, Nickell drove on the inside (left) lane of southbound US-69 while traveling northbound. Klein was traveling southbound in that same lane when the accident occurred. Nickell is believed to have driven into oncoming traffic for at least a mile and a half before prior to the accident. Investigators say that both drivers were wearing their seat belts and they continue to investigate whether or not Nickell was impaired by alcohol or a medical condition at the time of the crash.

The Louisburg Fire Department was dispatched at 5:34 a.m. after the Miami County Sheriff's Office received reports of a head on accident on US-69 Highway approximately two miles south of K-68 Highway, near Louisburg. Less than two minutes before the Fire Department was dispatched, Deputies were advised of a mini-van driving northbound in the southbound lanes of US-69 Highway. Highway Patrol Troopers say that a dispatcher was still on the phone with one of the people reporting the wrong-way vehicle when the head-on crash occurred.

Miami County Deputies arrived first at the scene of the accident and reported GMC mini-van on its side in the median with a female trapped inside. A second deputy reported that the other vehicle, a Ford Fusion, had one occupant inside. The male driver of the Ford was confirmed to be deceased by Miami County EMS personnel.

Louisburg Firefighters spent about 50 minutes extricating the female driver from the crashed mini-van. She was then transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, by a LifeFlight Eagle helicopter. Troopers say that she was alert and talking as she was loaded onto the helicopter and is cooperating in the investigation.

A source familiar with the incident tells Operation 100 News that the injured driver is an approximately 45-year-old female. Her injuries were said to serious but, not immediately life threatening, per the source.

The Kansas Highway Patrol and Miami County Sheriff's Office continue to investigate the accident and have not released any further details.

Severe Weather Awareness Week 2012

In 2011 there were 68 tornadoes in Kansas, three people were killed and seven others injured. The first tornado  of the 2011 season was an EF0 on February 27th in Cowley county and the last of the year was and EF1 on October 8th in Haskell county.

March 12-16, 2012 is this year's Severe Weather Awareness Week in Kansas, conducted by the Kansas Division of Emergency Management and local emergency management agencies throughout the state. The National Weather Service says, the 2012 severe weather season has already become quite active across the country so it is imperative you prepare now. Severe Weather Awareness Week is a week when the public is encouraged to review their severe weather safety plans.

• Monday, March 12th is "Preparedness Day." The National Weather Service suggest three simple steps to complete. First, Identify the severe weather hazards you may face. Second, Set up your plan. Third, Practice your plan. More information on these three steps. 

• Tuesday, March 13th is "Tornadoes Day." Emergency Management agencies throughout Kansas will be taking part in a Tornado Safety Drill at 1:30 p.m. local time. Outdoor warning sirens will sound and the public, including schools and businesses, are encouraged to put their tornado safety plans into action as if there was a tornado warning issued. • Wednesday, March 14th is "Flash Flood Day." In the past 10 years, flooding has accounted for 14 deaths and $41 million in damages in Kansas alone. "Turn around, Don't Drown!" More information on Flood Safety.

• Thursday, March 15th is "Thunderstorm Day." All severe thunderstorms have the potential to produce damaging winds and large hail. Winds and hail can and do severely damage property every year in Kansas. More information on Hail and Damaging Winds.

Police impersonator stops at least one vehicle in Miami County

UPDATE: As of 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the Miami County Sheriff's Office reports that the suspect and the vehicle have been located. The man turned himself in after word spread of the incident from media and Facebook, according to Authorities. Deputies say the male suspect is a Law Enforcement Officer from "out of town." He reportedly spotted a strange vehicle and made a traffic stop on that vehicle. The case has been forwarded to the Undersheriff who will decide the outcome of the case.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a person reported being pulled over by a man impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer around 4 a.m., south of Paola, Kansas.

The man was described as a white male with a thin face, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 150-180lbs and wearing oval glasses. He was dressed in a black water resistant jacket and blue jeans with holes in them. The victim also reports that the male was armed with an unknown type handgun.

The suspect vehicle is described as a black or dark colored Chevrolet 2-door, possibly a Cobalt. The vehicle is said to have red/blue "police style" lights on the sun visor and a dealership license plate on the front bumper.

Teenager shot by Deputy during disturbance

The Miami County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a Deputy involved shooting occurred Friday morning.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m., Miami County Sheriff's Deputies were called to an address in the 31000 block of west 287th Street in Stanton Township, an area approximately five miles west of Paola. The calling party reported some type of disturbance at the address.

Two Deputies arrived to investigate and were confronted by a 15-year-old male with a pick ax, according to a source familiar with the incident, the teenager threw a pick ax at one of the patrol vehicles. One of the Deputies reportedly shot the teenager in the upper thigh, after the juvenile attacked the Deputies with a baseball bat. The juvenile's injuries were said to be serious and he was transported by Miami County EMS to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

The involved Sheriff's Deputies were also treated for minor injuries, with the Deputy who was struck by the pick ax, being transported to an area hospital for evaluation. The other Deputy refused EMS transport from the scene.

A LifeFlight Eagle Helicopter was dispatched to respond to the scene for transport of the male juvenile. That transport was cancelled shortly after Miami County EMS units arrived on the scene.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office advises that the incident is under investigation and they would not currently comment on the status of, or circumstances, surrounding their investigation.

Police say Ashley Harlan, located and safe

Updated: Olathe Police say that Ashley has been located and is safe. Police will not be releasing any further information regarding the case and no charges are expected. She was confirmed located December 22nd. Harlan had not been seen since she ran away from a foster home on December 6, 2011.

Olathe Police say, 16-year-old Ashley K. Harlan ran away from a foster home on December 6, 2011. She has not been seen since.

Ashley is described as a white female with blonde hair and hazel eyes. She is 5'2" tall and 160lbs. Ashley is known to have friends in Johnson County and Miami County as well as at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Single vehicle rollover accident

The Miami County Sheriff's Office is investigating this morning after a vehicle rolled over in southern Miami County.

Miami County EMS, the Louisburg Fire Department along with the Drexel, Missouri Fire Department were dispatched just before 2:25 a.m. to 367th Street approximately one-quarter of a mile west of New Lancaster Road. Drexel Fire reported one vehicle rolled onto its side with one person trapped.

The patient, described as a 25-year-old male, was transported to a Kansas City area trauma center with head and multiple other injuries. The man was in critical condition at the time he was transported.

There have been no updates made available as to his current condition. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Sheriff's Office vehicle pursuit leaves one dead

UPDATE: This afternoon, the deceased driver has been identified as 21-year-old, Clayton R. Kessler of Hillsdale, Kansas. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the accident.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a fatality accident on southbound US 169 Highway at 215th Street in Spring Hill. Just before the crash, Deputies were in pursuit of a vehicle which one Deputy reported was "in excess of 140 miles per hour".

Seconds prior to the crash, Johnson County Deputies disregarded chasing the suspect vehicle, only described as a "Dodge Neon SRT-4". The vehicle is reported to have rolled several times and came to rest upside down. When the first Deputy arrived at the vehicle it was reported that the driver had been ejected from the vehicle. Johnson County Fire District 2 units were dispatched to the scene along with Johnson County Med-Act and Miami County EMS. 

After approximately 20 minutes of searching the area a subject was found, matching the description of the registered vehicle owner. That person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash also sparked a grass fire, which was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

As of 2:30 a.m., crews remain at the scene, investigating and working to confirm that there was only one occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Southbound lanes of US-169 Highway is expected to remain closed until 8 or 8:30 a.m., according to an Emergency Dispatcher.

No further information was immediately available.

Several Burn Bans lifted

Follow up to previous story: Johnson County Burn Bans

Several area Fire Department's issued Burn Ban's over the past several weeks due to the extended period of dry conditions. With last week's rainfall, a few of those have now been lifted.

Burn Bans for the city of Olathe and Unincorporated Douglas County have been lifted.

Always remember that prior to any open or recreational burning, you are responsible for checking with your local fire department and acquiring any required permits or special permissions that may be required in your area.

Many area fire departments also have special guidelines that must be followed when burning. Fines for failing to comply with burning regulations can range from $50 to $500 or more.

Deffenbaugh garbage truck crash in Miami County kills one, critically injures another

UPDATE:
The Miami County Sheriff's Office today says that the Deffenbaugh truck was traveling westbound on 223rd Street when it left the roadway and drove into a ditch, the truck then swerved back onto the road, the driver over corrected and crashed into the same ditch. While the victim's names have not been released, the Sheriff's Office says that the driver of the truck is expected to recover and the passenger of the truck was killed in the accident. Both had to be extricated from the truck after the crash.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatality accident at 223rd Street and Quivira Road, near Bucyrus. The accident is reported to have occurred just after 12:45 on Monday afternoon. Fire crews arriving on the scene reported the involved truck sustained "extremely heavy damage."

Emergency Dispatchers confirm that one truck was involved in the accident. That truck was occupied by two people. One is reported to be in critical condition and the other was pronounced deceased at the scene. Extensive extrication was required. A heavy rescue rig from the Overland Park Fire Department along with a "large tow truck" responded to the scene for additional assistance with extrication.

Crews were on scene for just over 1 hour and 10 minutes before the patient was fully extricated from the truck. During extrication, one firefighter is reported to have suffered an eye injury. That firefighter was transported to an area hospital for treatment, reported to be "hydraulic fluid" in the eye.

A LifeFlight Eagle helicopter responded to the scene and transported one patient to a Kansas City area trauma center.

A dispatcher advised that from the time the call was received until the extrication was completed, 1 hour and 34 minutes had elapsed.

Deffenbaugh Industries has confirmed, by phone, that one of their vehicle's was involved in the accident. That vehicle was assigned a two person crew, according to a spokesperson.

Fire services are provided to this area of Miami County by Johnson County Fire District No. 2. Emergency Medical transport services are provided my Miami County EMS.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Missing Olathe man found dead in Miami County

The Olathe Police Department reports that at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, October, 15th, with the assistance of the Miami County Sheriff's Department and Kansas Highway Patrol, located the body of an adult male in a wooded area near 239th Street in Miami County, Kansas.

The deceased man has been identified as Samuel J. Hargrove, a white male born, December 29, 1990. Hargrove was reported missing from Olathe on October 13th, 2011. Police advise there were no indications of criminal activity.

Gunshot to the leg results in serious injuries

Shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday morning, Miami County Sheriff Deputies and EMS crews were called to the 1000 block of North 2nd Street East in Louisburg on reports of a subject with a gunshot wound. Deputies arrived on scene and confirmed that the scene was secure for Medics to respond in.

Upon arrival at the address, Medics confirmed that the subject had a serious gunshot wound to a leg. Initially a Life Flight Eagle medical helicopter was dispatched to respond due to the distance between trauma centers and the scene. That helicopter was cancelled after Medics arrived on scene. 

The Sheriff's Department continues to investigate and few details are available regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident. No other injuries were reported.

Believe it or not, Operation 100 News is the work of only one person. It all started with one 100 channel analog scanner back in 1996. At that time I only monitored Law Enforcement in Johnson County, along with Fire Departments and Med-Act of Johnson County. Today, Operation 100 News has six scanners, four of which are capable of monitoring Digital P25 Radio Systems, an outdoor, roof mounted antenna, and two dedicated computers. I have been tracking Johnson County since 1996 and Douglas County since 2002.


Operation 100 News has been around since 2003 as a dream of immediate public notification of unfolding emergency situations in your neighborhood, letting you know what is happening nearby to keep you and your family aware and safe. 


I currently monitor Police, Sheriff, Fire and Medical county-wide for Douglas and Johnson County.

Operation 100 News is a 100% free service to the General Public, with more than 50 hours dedicated to its operation each week by one person and funding is extremely tight. Currently funded by personal funds, occasional public donations and news media contracts. 


At first Operation 100 News called and notified other news media's news desks to unfolding situations and responded to incident scenes. After several failed attempts at cooperation with KC area media, this changed to a by contract only service for local media. Previous efforts were mainly one-sided with KC media outlets taking whatever information I could offer them, very few realizing the potential of what Operation 100 News could provide. Several news outlets within my coverage area have since contracted with me. Those outlets receive a phone call to their contact person when news breaks that they have contracted me to notify them of.
