Three of four in Ottawa County jail break back in custody

UPDATE: All four escaped inmates back in custody.

The Kansas Department of Corrections says that Santos Carrera Morales has was apprehended around 11:40 p.m. Thursday.

KDOC says that Carrera Morales was spotted by a citizen in Russell, Kansas. The citizen called authorities, where were able to take him into custody. No other information surrounding the apprehension was immediately available.
Carrera Morales was 17-years-old when he was convicted of first degree murder in the March 2007 deaths of  two Sedgwick County teenagers.

KDOC says all escapees should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on their whereabouts is urged to call 911, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-572-7463 or the Ellsworth Correctional Facility at 785-472-5501.

Sex offender escapes from Lansing

The Kansas Department of Corrections says around 3 a.m., Wednesday, April 18th, Gary Leslie Furthmyer escaped from the minimum security facility in Lansing, Leavenworth County, Kansas. He was on a minimum security job assignment at the facility's steam plant

Furthmyer was serving a sentence of up to 25 years for Indecent Liberties with a child. He was sentenced in 1986, according to KDOC records. His earliest possible release date was October 2014. KDOC records also show Furthmyer has previously escaped, from a Louisiana prison in 1988, he was apprehended five years later in Texas.

He is described as a fair skinned white male, 5'9" tall, 185lbs, with blue eyes and brown hair.

KDOC says that all escapees should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Gary Leslie Furthmyer is urged to call 911 or the Lansing Correctional Facility at 913-727-3235.

Jail break reported in Ottawa County, Kansas

UPDATE: All four escaped inmates back in custody.


Operation 100 News is working to learn more on a report of a jail break from the Ottawa County Detention Center in Minneapolis, Kansas, about 20 miles north of Salina. The break is said to have occurred around 4:45 a.m..


The Kansas Highway Patrol says four males, armed with shanks, escaped from the facility. One of the men was quickly captured, the other three fled in a gold or brown, 2002 Nissan Altima. A direction of travel for the vehicle was not known and there were no immediate reports of any injuries.


Ottawa County Officials say that four male inmates overpowered Corrections Officers. The four were armed with shanks (illegal prison made knives). One of the men was apprehended a short time later. Three others remained at large as of Wednesday morning.

All four of the men are prisoners of the Kansas Department of and had been housed at the Ottawa County Detention Center since January.


The Kansas Highway Patrol along with Law Enforcement from Saline County are assisting in the search for the suspects.


Schools from USD 239 were CLOSED Tuesday citing an "unresolved city issue."

Police impersonator stops at least one vehicle in Miami County

UPDATE: As of 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the Miami County Sheriff's Office reports that the suspect and the vehicle have been located. The man turned himself in after word spread of the incident from media and Facebook, according to Authorities. Deputies say the male suspect is a Law Enforcement Officer from "out of town." He reportedly spotted a strange vehicle and made a traffic stop on that vehicle. The case has been forwarded to the Undersheriff who will decide the outcome of the case.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a person reported being pulled over by a man impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer around 4 a.m., south of Paola, Kansas.

The man was described as a white male with a thin face, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 150-180lbs and wearing oval glasses. He was dressed in a black water resistant jacket and blue jeans with holes in them. The victim also reports that the male was armed with an unknown type handgun.

The suspect vehicle is described as a black or dark colored Chevrolet 2-door, possibly a Cobalt. The vehicle is said to have red/blue "police style" lights on the sun visor and a dealership license plate on the front bumper.

Missing Olathe man found dead in Miami County

The Olathe Police Department reports that at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, October, 15th, with the assistance of the Miami County Sheriff's Department and Kansas Highway Patrol, located the body of an adult male in a wooded area near 239th Street in Miami County, Kansas.

The deceased man has been identified as Samuel J. Hargrove, a white male born, December 29, 1990. Hargrove was reported missing from Olathe on October 13th, 2011. Police advise there were no indications of criminal activity.

Olathe Homicide, September 18

Olathe Police have provided a press release this morning regarding a homicide that occurred last night in the 500 block of East Brier Drive. The suspect is in custody and currently awaiting charges at the New Century Adult Detention Center.

On Sunday September 18th at 8:01 pm Olathe Police officers were dispatched to 516 East Brier Drive on a reported shooting.

Upon arrival, officers observed a male victim who was found deceased from a gunshot wound. Information received indicated that a male suspect had fled the residence and possibly was still in the area on foot.

At approximately 10:35 PM, officers located the male suspect in a wooded area a few blocks away from the residence. He was taken into custody and later transported to the Johnson County Adult Detention Center where he will be held pending formal charging by the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office.

As this investigation unfolded, the Olathe Police Department employed the assistance of several law enforcement agencies to include; The Johnson County Sheriff's Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

This investigation continues and anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Olathe Police Department at 913-782-0820 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).

Johnson County Sheriff's Office hosting a Heavy Equipment Theft Summit

Lenexa, Kan. – The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Theft Reports of Agricultural and Construction Equipment (T.R.A.C.E.) program is hosting a first of its kind Heavy Equipment Theft Summit in Johnson County on September 20, 2011.  This summit is designed to bring together law enforcement officers, equipment owners, dealers, rental companies and insurance adjusters and agents together to discuss ways to prevent heavy equipment theft and enhance recovery. 

The summit will feature break-out classes with presentations from top industry experts from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, National Equipment Register and law enforcement.  During these sessions they will discuss the growing problem of construction and agricultural equipment theft, the challenges that hinder equipment recovery and the latest in equipment security technologies.  In addition, equipment will be on hand for participants to practice the techniques they learn to locate data necessary to identify and unite it with the owners.

The summit will be held September 20, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 12601 W. 95th Street, Lenexa, KS, 66215.  Media is welcome at this event and interviews with field experts will be available.  Those who have not already registered are welcome to attend and may register the day of the event.

The T.R.A.C.E. program began in early 2010 and now has over 300 registered participants throughout the metro area, Kansas and Missouri.  The program intends to efficiently get information regarding stolen farm equipment, livestock theft, livestock recovery, construction equipment and suspicious activities distributed across Johnson and the surrounding counties.  The objective is to quickly inform all participants of suspicious activities and crime in their neighborhood, farming community and construction sites.

Scammers posing as Sheriff's Deputies

Olathe, Kan. – Scammers posing as Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputies have stolen thousands of dollars from area businesses in the last two years.  And this trend continued with at least two more scam attempts in recent weeks involving businesses in Olathe.  

The scam begins with a phone call to a business and in most cases a restaurant.  The caller then requests to speak to the manager on duty.  The caller tells the manager they are with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and one of their employees has been arrested and is in jail.  The caller usually has the name, the reason for the arrest and a very good description of the person they claim to need bail money for.  They then request the manager wire money to bond their employees out of jail.  The request is to a specific place which is always outside of the Johnson County area.  

It should be stressed that the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office does not under any circumstances request money from anyone concerning a bond.  The person making requests for bond money should be the person arrested and in need of bail.

Anyone receiving a call from anyone identifying themselves as a deputy with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office requesting bail money be wired to a location should gather as much information from the caller as they can, hang up, call 911 and report this attempted crime.
