Five people injured in JoCo crash

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating after a two vehicle accident injured five people Friday morning near Gardner.

The accident was reported around 6:10 a.m. at the intersection of 159th Street and Moonlight Road, in Gardner Township. Motorists are urged to avoid the area while the accident is investigated.

Johnson County Fire District No. 1 crews arrived on the scene to report two vehicles involved in the crash with moderate to heavy damage. Two people were said to be pinned in the backseat of one vehicle.

A 38-year-old male was critically injured when the van he was driving struck another vehicle occupied by four people. The occupants of the second vehicle include a three females and one male. Two of the females are 16-years-old, one is 17 and the male is 20-years-old. One of the females is in serious condition, the other three only had minor injuries.

Johnson County Med-Act had three ambulances at the scene to transport all of the injured people to an area hospital.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office says the southbound lanes of Moonlight Road "will remain closed for some time this morning," due to this accident.

Two women found shot to death in JoCo park

Update:

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office now believes the incident to be a double suicide involving twin sisters. The motive of the apparent suicide pact remains under investigation. Deputies have not released the identities of the women.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating after two women were found shot to death along the Gary L. Haller Trail near the Barker Road access point located at 5946 Barker Road in Shawnee.

The trail access point is located about two-tenths of a mile south of Johnson Drive on Barker Road, or just over three-quarters of a mile north of Shawnee Mission Parkway.


Johnson County Sheriff's Office Master Deputy Rick Howell says a visitor alerted Johnson County Park Police of the scene around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Park Police responded and located two women in their 50's with gunshot wounds to their heads. The bodies were approximately 150 yards into the park along the trail.

Authorities also say a vehicle belonging to one of the women was located in the parking lot of the trail access point and they are not looking for any suspects in the case.

The women are said to have known each other but, their identities and relationship to each other has not been released.

SUV crashes into Johnson County home

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating this morning after a Sport Utility Vehicle crashed into a residence on the northeast corner of 167th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Oxford Township.

Dispatchers say the crash was reported just before 8 a.m., at 16695 Metcalf Avenue.

Overland Park Firefighters arrived on scene to find the SUV under a collapsed deck. Crews reported the female driver would need to be extricated from the vehicle. The driver was said to be the only occupant of the vehicle. Her injuries are said to be serious. Rescue crews worked for about 15 minutes to extricate the injured driver.

Deputies reported the vehicle struck a deck before coming to rest against the home's foundation. A building inspector is said to be responding to check the integrity of the structure.

No other injuries were reported.

OPFD provides fire protection for this unincorporated area of county. The Overland Park city limits runs along Metcalf Avenue, everything to the west of Metcalf being in Overland Park.

This accident occurred approximately 100 yards from where another single vehicle accident occurred in June 2012. 23-year-old, Adam P. Baker was killed in that accident when his vehicle left the roadway and began lodged in a tree. More information on the previous accident can be found here.

Fatal accident involving a car lodged in a tree

Authorities have identified the victim as 23-year-old, Adam P. Baker.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal accident in Aubry Township this morning. The call was dispatched around 3:15 a.m. Thursday and initial reports indicated a car had struck a tree. As Overland Park Fire units arrived on scene they reported that the vehicle was actually off of the ground, in a tree, southeast of the intersection of 167th Street and Metcalf Avenue.

Due to the location of the vehicle, rescue crews were unable to immediately make contact with the reportedly injured person. The Overland Park Fire Department's Rescue apparatus along with an Engine company and an Engine company from Johnson County Fire District No. 2 were all called to the scene and requested to bring their hydraulic rescue equipment and ladders. An Overland Park Fire Battalion Chief reported the vehicle to be "lodged up into trees" and that the "vehicle is unstable."

After about 15 minutes at the scene, crews confirmed that one person is deceased following the accident.

A spokesperson says the victim is believed to be a male. That male was pronounced deceased as soon as crews made access to him. An extensive extrication was required to remove the man from the vehicle. The vehicle is approximately nearly 100 feet off of the roadway. Authorities say it is believed that speed played a role in this accident.

Traffic on 167th Street was closed east of Metcalf for several hours.

Check lane announced and results from last week's efforts

The Overland Park Police Department announced that they will be conducting a DUI Check Lane, Friday night into early Saturday morning, May 11-12, 2012.

Police say they will have assistance from other local law enforcement agencies including; Lenexa, Merriam, Mission and Olathe.

A statement released Wednesday afternoon encourages people to designate a sober driver.

A similar check lane held last Friday night, May 4th, by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, checked 362 cars. Deputies say they made 12 DUI arrests, two drug arrests, 1 for transporting an open container and one for driving while suspended.

The Olathe Police Department's Traffic Unit conducted a driver's license check lane and saturation patrol last Saturday night, May 5th. A statement released by Olathe police says that Officers issued 68 traffic citations during the effort, 37 of those citations were for no driver's license. Four were for driver's license suspensions, eight seat belt violations, two DUI arrests and two narcotics arrests.

Funding for most of these efforts is provided by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), designed to reduce alcohol related crashes in the State of Kansas

KDOT says, across the State of Kansas, fatality accidents are down 26.2% from the same time last year with much of the credit going to enforcement of the primary seat belt law and DUI enforcement.

Three of four in Ottawa County jail break back in custody

UPDATE: All four escaped inmates back in custody.

The Kansas Department of Corrections says that Santos Carrera Morales has was apprehended around 11:40 p.m. Thursday.

Santos Carrera Morales was apprehended Thursday 

KDOC says that Carrera Morales was spotted by a citizen in Russell, Kansas. The citizen called authorities, where were able to take him into custody. No other information surrounding the apprehension was immediately available.
Carrera Morales was 17-years-old when he was convicted of first degree murder in the March 2007 deaths of  two Sedgwick County teenagers.

KDOC says all escapees should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on their whereabouts is urged to call 911, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-572-7463 or the Ellsworth Correctional Facility at 785-472-5501.

Jail break reported in Ottawa County, Kansas

UPDATE: All four escaped inmates back in custody.


Operation 100 News is working to learn more on a report of a jail break from the Ottawa County Detention Center in Minneapolis, Kansas, about 20 miles north of Salina. The break is said to have occurred around 4:45 a.m..


The Kansas Highway Patrol says four males, armed with shanks, escaped from the facility. One of the men was quickly captured, the other three fled in a gold or brown, 2002 Nissan Altima. A direction of travel for the vehicle was not known and there were no immediate reports of any injuries.


Ottawa County Officials say that four male inmates overpowered Corrections Officers. The four were armed with shanks (illegal prison made knives). One of the men was apprehended a short time later. Three others remained at large as of Wednesday morning.

All four of the men are prisoners of the Kansas Department of and had been housed at the Ottawa County Detention Center since January.


The Kansas Highway Patrol along with Law Enforcement from Saline County are assisting in the search for the suspects.


Schools from USD 239 were CLOSED Tuesday citing an "unresolved city issue."

Iraq War Veteran from De Soto, Kansas found safe in Illinois

UPDATED: Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies say Matthew Flowers has been located in Illinois. Authorities in Collinsville, Illinois, east of St. Louis, located him hitchhiking and said he was "headed towards Florida." He was last seen in De Soto on Tuesday. Johnson County Deputies say he left voluntarily and was not taken into custody in Illinois.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance in locating a missing Veteran.

Deputies say 28-year-old, Matthew Scott Flowers, of De Soto has been missing from his home for two days.

He is described as a white male, standing 5' 10" tall and weighing approximately 200 pounds, with a shaved head

and blue eyes. Flowers has a tattoo on his left forearm which reads "Madden" and a Chinese symbol on his right arm. He was last seen wearing brown cowboy boots, blue jeans.

Flowers is an Iraq War Veteran who suffered an injury during his deployment. Deputies say he requires medication, which he is not believed to have with him. When he is off of his medication, he may display "erratic or aggressive behavior."

Two men injured after pickup collides with tractor trailer

Update: Last updated April 6, 2012 - 9:27am The Kansas Highway Patrol's initial accident report says a 1992 Nissan Pickup was traveling westbound on U.S. 24 Highway, one-quarter of a mile east of Perry. The pickup pulled onto the shoulder. A westbound 2007 Kenworth Semi-truck approached the stopped pickup and moved into the eastbound lane to pass the stopped pickup truck. At the same time the pickup truck pulled back onto the roadway and attempted to make a U-Turn, crashing into the semi-truck.

Investigators say the pickup truck was occupied by two men; 19-year-old, Gary Koelliker, of Highland, Kansas was reported to have been the driver with 20-year-old Dyllon Butrick, of White Cloud, Kansas as a passenger.

Troopers say both men were not wearing seat belts when the crash occurred and they were ejected when the pickup rolled. Both men reportedly suffered life threatening injuries. Koelliker was transported by Jefferson County EMS to Stormont-Vail in Topeka. Butrick was flow to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

The driver of the semi-truck, a 39-year-old South Bend, Indiana man, was not injured in the accident.

As of this report, Troopers say they are still investigating if alcohol or any other impairment played a role in causing the accident. No updates were available on either of the injured men's conditions.

The accident was reported at 1:44 a.m. on U.S. Highway 24 just west of U.S. Highway 59, between Williamstown and Perry in Jefferson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says that a pickup truck and a tractor trailer collided. Crews on the scene report two people critically injured after they were both ejected.

Crews initially requested that two helicopters respond for transport. LifeStar was sent to the scene from Lawrence and the next closest, available helicopter would have been LifeFlight Eagle, more than 30 minutes from the scene. LifeFlight Eagle was cancelled at that time.

One person was transported to Stormont-Vail in Topeka by Jefferson County EMS. LifeStar transported the second person to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Both victims are said to have suffered head injuries.

KDOT closed all lanes of U.S. Highway 24 between Williamstown and Perry. All westbound traffic was redirected to northbound U.S. Highway 59. Eastbound traffic is blocked at Lecompton Road.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office was also on the scene assisting with traffic control. The Kansas Highway Patrol's Accident Reconstruction Team assisted with investigating the accident.

All lanes were reopened to traffic as 8 a.m. Friday morning.

Crossover on US-69 leads to head on fatality accident

The Kansas Highway Patrol has now identified the driver killed in this accident as 57-year-old, Scott E. Klein of San Clemente, California. Klein was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The other driver has been identified as 45-year-old, Marilyn S, Nickell of Drexel, Missouri. Nickell was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas where she is listed in stable condition.

Troopers say they are still investigating why Nickell's 1997 GMC Safari mini-van crossed the median and drove into oncoming traffic. A preliminary accident report shows that after crossing the center median, Nickell drove on the inside (left) lane of southbound US-69 while traveling northbound. Klein was traveling southbound in that same lane when the accident occurred. Nickell is believed to have driven into oncoming traffic for at least a mile and a half before prior to the accident. Investigators say that both drivers were wearing their seat belts and they continue to investigate whether or not Nickell was impaired by alcohol or a medical condition at the time of the crash.

The Louisburg Fire Department was dispatched at 5:34 a.m. after the Miami County Sheriff's Office received reports of a head on accident on US-69 Highway approximately two miles south of K-68 Highway, near Louisburg. Less than two minutes before the Fire Department was dispatched, Deputies were advised of a mini-van driving northbound in the southbound lanes of US-69 Highway. Highway Patrol Troopers say that a dispatcher was still on the phone with one of the people reporting the wrong-way vehicle when the head-on crash occurred.

Miami County Deputies arrived first at the scene of the accident and reported GMC mini-van on its side in the median with a female trapped inside. A second deputy reported that the other vehicle, a Ford Fusion, had one occupant inside. The male driver of the Ford was confirmed to be deceased by Miami County EMS personnel.

Louisburg Firefighters spent about 50 minutes extricating the female driver from the crashed mini-van. She was then transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, by a LifeFlight Eagle helicopter. Troopers say that she was alert and talking as she was loaded onto the helicopter and is cooperating in the investigation.

A source familiar with the incident tells Operation 100 News that the injured driver is an approximately 45-year-old female. Her injuries were said to serious but, not immediately life threatening, per the source.

The Kansas Highway Patrol and Miami County Sheriff's Office continue to investigate the accident and have not released any further details.

Police Officer injured in morning accident

A Gardner Police Officer was involved in a two vehicle accident Saturday morning. The accident occurred around 7:30 a.m., in the 700 block of E Main Street.

Fire crews, from Johnson County Fire District No. 1, reported that two vehicles were involved in the accident and both had sustained moderate damage.

Johnson County Med-Act reported that a Police Officer and a civilian were said to have suffered minor injures in the accident and were transported, by Med-Act, to an area Hospital to be checked out.

Due to the accident involving a Gardner Police Officer, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident.

No other details were immediately available.

Police impersonator stops at least one vehicle in Miami County

UPDATE: As of 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the Miami County Sheriff's Office reports that the suspect and the vehicle have been located. The man turned himself in after word spread of the incident from media and Facebook, according to Authorities. Deputies say the male suspect is a Law Enforcement Officer from "out of town." He reportedly spotted a strange vehicle and made a traffic stop on that vehicle. The case has been forwarded to the Undersheriff who will decide the outcome of the case.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a person reported being pulled over by a man impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer around 4 a.m., south of Paola, Kansas.

The man was described as a white male with a thin face, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 150-180lbs and wearing oval glasses. He was dressed in a black water resistant jacket and blue jeans with holes in them. The victim also reports that the male was armed with an unknown type handgun.

The suspect vehicle is described as a black or dark colored Chevrolet 2-door, possibly a Cobalt. The vehicle is said to have red/blue "police style" lights on the sun visor and a dealership license plate on the front bumper.

Single vehicle crash in Overland Park critically injures one

It happened just before 2:30 a.m., near Quivira Road and 183rd Street in southern Overland Park.

A 911 caller reported that she witnessed a vehicle crash, possibly into a creek near the intersection, and that she could no longer see the vehicle from her home. Fire/Rescue crews from Johnson County Fire District Number 2 along with Johnson County Sheriff Deputies and Overland Park Police were dispatched to the scene.

Fire crews arrived, at 2:32 a.m. reporting that there was one vehicle, a Kia mini-van, involved which had sustained heavy damage to the front end. One person was found to be trapped inside the vehicle with critical injuries. An additional fire apparatus and Johnson County Med-Act Supervisor were both requested to respond to the scene for assistance with what fire crews called "an extensive extrication."

Crews worked for approximately 25 minutes to remove the trapped driver from the vehicle. The driver is said to be an approximately 30-year-old male.

Rescue crews also reported a "strong smell of Alcohol" from the vehicle.

Police and Firefighters also checked the surrounding area for the possibility that a passenger had been ejected. No other victims were located in their search.

Lenexa McDonalds robbery

UPDATE: Police say that this robbery included an "inside connection" which involved several employees. Five people, ages 15-18 and including one known gang member, face a variety of serious charges in Johnson County Court.

Lenexa Police are investigating this morning after the McDonald's restaurant, in the 15900 block of west 87th Street Parkway, was robbed by two males. Police say the robbery occurred shortly after 2 a.m..

Officers from Lenexa, Shawnee and Johnson County Park Police all assisted in the manhunt. Two suspects were involved in the robbery. Both were described as black males, 20-25 years of age, both were around 5' 11" tall with "skinny" build. The men concealed their faces with masks and both were wearing black sweatshirts. During the robbery one man was armed with a shotgun and the other was armed with a pistol.

A Lenexa Police K-9 unit searched the area immediately after the robbery was reported. While searching, Officers noticed a vehicle that was first seen with one occupant and then a few minutes later with two additional occupants. That vehicle was stopped, near 87th Street Parkway and Lackman Road, just before 3 a.m.. The vehicle's occupants were detained and Police believe at least one of those subjects was "directly involved" in the initial robbery.

Police are not releasing how much money the men are believed to have left the business with and only saying that Detectives and Officers continue to investigate the incident. No injuries were reported.

Single vehicle rollover accident

The Miami County Sheriff's Office is investigating this morning after a vehicle rolled over in southern Miami County.

Miami County EMS, the Louisburg Fire Department along with the Drexel, Missouri Fire Department were dispatched just before 2:25 a.m. to 367th Street approximately one-quarter of a mile west of New Lancaster Road. Drexel Fire reported one vehicle rolled onto its side with one person trapped.

The patient, described as a 25-year-old male, was transported to a Kansas City area trauma center with head and multiple other injuries. The man was in critical condition at the time he was transported.

There have been no updates made available as to his current condition. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Jefferson County shooting

Update: The Lawrence Journal-World is reporting that William Schoonover, 58, from rural Valley Falls, sustained one gunshot wound to the left side of his chest. Schoonover was transported to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka by ambulance. He was in surgery Sunday afternoon.

The man who allegedly shot Schoonover, a 62-year-old from rural Valley Falls, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on suspicion of intentional murder in the second degree. The charges could be revised.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a man was shot. First reports of the shooting were heard shortly after 10:40 a.m. this morning. The victim was reported to be near a "trailer home" in the 6100 block of 142nd Street.

According to scanner traffic, a man called 911 and reported that he had just shot a man who had attacked him. The shooting victim is reported to a male in his 50's  be awake and bleeding heavily from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

A LifeStar Medical helicopter was initially dispatched to respond to transport the man to the hospital. The man was transported to Stormont-Vail in Topeka by ground ambulance and LifeStar's response was cancelled just after 11 a.m..

Deputies on scene have requested a "detective response to scene."

No other injuries have been reported. Further details were not immediately available from anyone that I could reach by phone.

Leawood Officer Involved Shooting investigation

Leawood Police are investigating after shots were fired on a traffic stop.

Police say an officer stopped a white 2005 Ford Mustang on the exit ramp from eastbound Interstate 435 to State Line Road at 3:17 a.m.. While on that traffic stop a second vehicle, a Chevrolet Malibu, pulled in front of the Mustang. The officer walked up to the Malibu to see why they had stopped, at that time a second officer had arrived on scene and witnessed a subject in the Mustang toss a gun out of the window. That officer alerted the first officer, to the gun, who then saw the Mustang driving towards him. The officer opened fire on the fleeing Mustang. Police are not releasing how many shots were fired at the vehicle as this is a continuing investigation.

It was initially not known if the driver of the vehicle was struck. Just before 7 a.m., Police say that a male matching the description of the Mustang's driver has shown up at Truman Medical Center, near 23rd and Holmes in Kansas City, Missouri, with a gunshot wound. This man has been identified as, 32-year-old, Adrian M. Hopper of Wichita, Kansas. Hopper remains in an area hospital and is expected to survive his injuries. The 2005 Ford Mustang was located by Police in Grandview, Missouri.

No other injuries were reported. The officer who fired the shots has been placed on routine administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

Stepped up Holiday Enforcement

Law Enforcement throughout the Douglas and Johnson County area are participating in the Kansas Thanksgiving Traffic Enforcement Campaign. The campaign will begin Monday, November 21 and last through Sunday, November 27, 2011. A grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation will enable area law enforcement to have more officers present on area roadways to aggressively enforce Kansas traffic laws. Officers will be looking especially for impaired drivers and for children, teens, and adults who are not legally and properly secured with a seat belt or child safety restraint system.

According to KDOT, the Thanksgiving holiday weekend (Wednesday-Sunday) commonly outranks all other holidays in its number of alcohol related crashes. Those driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, endanger not only themselves, but also their passengers, other motorists, and pedestrians. Across Kansas, six persons - most of them innocent - are killed or injured in nine alcohol-related crashes each day. KDOT says compared with non-alcohol-related crashes, vehicle occupants in alcohol-related crashes are over two and a half times more likely to be injured or killed. Each week across Kansas over 300 drivers are arrested for driving under the influence. 

Failure to take the time to buckle up is also responsible for needless death and maiming. Those who do not buckle up are about 12 times more likely to be killed and almost twice as likely to suffer injury as those who do buckle up. Even worse is the fact that the injuries suffered by those who are unbuckled are likely to be much more severe or disabling than those suffered by an occupant who is properly restrained. According to KDOT, which tracks all crashes in the state, crashes are most likely to occur within a short distance from home.

Area law enforcement reminds the public that if you are going to be drink, always designate a non-drinking driver. Make arrangements ahead of time.

Sheriff's Office vehicle pursuit leaves one dead

UPDATE: This afternoon, the deceased driver has been identified as 21-year-old, Clayton R. Kessler of Hillsdale, Kansas. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the accident.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a fatality accident on southbound US 169 Highway at 215th Street in Spring Hill. Just before the crash, Deputies were in pursuit of a vehicle which one Deputy reported was "in excess of 140 miles per hour".

Seconds prior to the crash, Johnson County Deputies disregarded chasing the suspect vehicle, only described as a "Dodge Neon SRT-4". The vehicle is reported to have rolled several times and came to rest upside down. When the first Deputy arrived at the vehicle it was reported that the driver had been ejected from the vehicle. Johnson County Fire District 2 units were dispatched to the scene along with Johnson County Med-Act and Miami County EMS. 

After approximately 20 minutes of searching the area a subject was found, matching the description of the registered vehicle owner. That person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash also sparked a grass fire, which was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

As of 2:30 a.m., crews remain at the scene, investigating and working to confirm that there was only one occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Southbound lanes of US-169 Highway is expected to remain closed until 8 or 8:30 a.m., according to an Emergency Dispatcher.

National Take Back Initiative - Saturday, October 29, 2011

This Saturday, October 29, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. is the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) along with state and local law enforcement agencies across the country will be hosting the event to collect unwanted and unused prescription drugs.

Residents are invited to drop off unused, unneeded or expired prescription medications at any of the listed locations, no questions asked. Tablets, capsules, and all other solid dosage forms will be collected. Intravenous solutions, injectable medications, and syringes will not be accepted.

According to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs. Each day more thank 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America.
