DUI suspected in late night crash with tree along Metcalf

A man in his mid-30s was seriously injured in a crash with a tree near 66th Terrace and Metcalf late Wednesday in Overland Park.

Police and firefighters were called to the 6600 block of Metcalf about 10:05 p.m. following reports that a truck had crashed into a tree.

"Witnesses reported vehicle one was traveling at a high rate of speed and at times driving southbound in the northbound lanes," Officer John Lacy of the Overland Park Police Department said. "Vehicle one ran off the road to the west and struck a tree."

At the scene, firefighters worked for about 10 minutes to extricate the driver from the crashed truck. The man suffered serious injuries to his legs.

Johnson County Med-Act and Overland Park firefighters transported the man to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

Officer Lacy confirms the man sustained severe injuries and is suspected of driving under the influence.

Firefighters from Consolidated Fire District No. 2 and Mission police officers also responded to the call.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Man critically injured in rollover crash late Saturday

A man in his 30’s was critically injured when the SUV he was driving crashed into a ditch in Shawnee late Saturday night.

Shawnee police, firefighters, and Johnson County Med-Act were called to the 14200 block of Midland Drive shortly before 11 p.m. on a reported rollover crash.

Firefighters had to remove the passenger’s door to safely extricate the driver, who was found lying across the passenger’s seat.

The man was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with critical injuries.

Recorded radio traffic indicates officers suspect alcohol may have been involved.

Midland Drive was closed between 67^th Street and 68^th Terrace for about two hours as emergency crews worked the scene.

Shawnee Police continue to investigate the crash.

Shawnee Fire Department trains for mass casualty crash

For three consecutive days last week, all 66 Shawnee Firefighters worked their way through a mock mass casualty crash. Each day the scenario involved a school bus, several vehicles, and volunteers playing the role of injured and hysterical people at the scene.

Last Wednesday’s scenario involved 17 victims with varying levels of injury spread among three passenger vehicles and the school bus. 11 volunteers filled the school bus, which in the drill had been rear-ended in as part of a chain-reaction crash. One car was partially under the rear of the bus. A second car was on its roof and partly on top of the first car. A third car was rolled onto its side near the front of the bus and was blocking all access to the door of the bus.

Firefighters arrived on the scene of the simulation to find a school bus involved in a crash with three other vehicles and multiple victims trapped.

Firefighters had to use struts, straps, and large chains to stabilize all involved vehicles before they could begin the work of safely removing all of the injured. A firefighter and a Johnson County Med-Act paramedic were lifted through the emergency window of the bus to start evaluating injuries inside as other firefighters worked to cut a hole in the wall of the bus.

One-by-one the injured passengers of the bus were lifted off and then moved across the scene to Johnson County Med-Act’s triage area where their injuries would be evaluated further.

After all of the victims had been removed from the vehicles, firefighters and paramedics gathered to discuss the drill and assess their response and handling of the various aspects.

Shawnee Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Pyle addressed everyone who participated in the exercise after its conclusion.

Deputy Fire Chief Sal Scarpa told Operation 100 News this drill was the first time they had the opportunity to use a school bus.

“On a three or four vehicle crash we may see five or six people with injuries,” Scarpa said. “The school bus changes everything, and we have to be prepared for that.”

The school bus was donated to the department for use in the scenario by the Kincaid Group which operates school buses for the Shawnee Mission School District as DS Bus Lines. Several Kansas City area towing companies donated the passenger vehicles.

VIDEO: Vehicle crashes through JoCo storefront, injuring employee inside

Olathe Police are investigating after a vehicle crashed through the front of a payday loans and check cashing business this morning.

The incident was reported around 10:15 Thursday morning at Ameribest Payday Loans & Check Cashing, located at 12705 S. Mur-Len Road. The business is on the southeast corner of 127th Street and S. Mur-Len Road.

Olathe Fire crews arrived to report the vehicle was completely inside the business and had pinned a female employee's legs against a file cabinet.

Firefighters worked for just under 10 minutes to free the woman's legs. Her injuries are said to be minor and she has been transported to an area hospital for further treatment.

Olathe Police say the driver of the vehicle was a 65-year-old female that was attempting to park her vehicle when the accident occurred. The vehicle crashed through the front of the business where a female employee in her 50's was working.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured and was released at the scene.

Lenexa Police are investigating two serious injury accidents this morning.

The first crash was reported to authorities just after 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, in the area of 79th Street and Pflumm Road. Officers arrived at the scene quickly and located a vehicle that had left the south side of 79th Street and struck a tree. The driver of the vehicle was unresponsive, still inside the car.

Lenexa firefighters extricated the driver from the vehicle and he was transported by Johnson County Med-Act to an area trauma center. The driver was only described as a male with critical injuries. He was not believed to have been wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred.

Police say the man's injuries are life threatening. Officers continue to investigate what cause the accident.

The scene was on the south side of 79th Street, between Pflumm Road and Noland Road. Officers closed 79th Street to all traffic while crews worked the scene. The road was reopened to all traffic around 3:30 a.m..

Man seriously injured in single vehicle rollover

Emergency crews were called to a second accident in the area of 87th Street and Woodland Road around 2 a.m. Wednesday. This scene is about five miles from the first scene.

A caller reported a vehicle had rolled over on the 87th Street bridge that goes over the railroad tracks, just east of Woodland Road. Again, officers arrived quickly and found the vehicle had came to rest on its side

and blocking both eastbound lanes.

As Lenexa Fire and Johnson County Med-Act arrived at the scene 87th Street was completely shutdown.

A witness tells Operation 100 News that the vehicle way laying on its passenger side and the driver was held in place by his seat belt. "The truck smelled of alcohol," according to the witness.

Firefighters worked for about 15 minutes to stabilize the vehicle and safely remove the driver.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the man, said to be in his 30's, to an area trauma center with serious injuries. Police say the man's injuries are serious but, not immediately life threatening. Officers continue to investigate what caused the accident and if alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

All lanes of 87th Street were reopened as the scene was cleaned up, around 3:30 a.m..

Shawnee Police assisted with blocking off 87th Street during the initial response to the crash.

Police have identified the driver that was killed in the accident as Julio Cesar Romero-Zepeda, 22, of Olathe, Kansas.

Operation 100 News has spoke to one of the people who called 9-1-1 to report the accident, Darla Williams of Gardner, Kansas. Williams says that she was on her way home from babysitting her grandson in Olathe when she came upon the crash.


Williams said, "It was so dark, I could only hear the screams and I told 911 to send at least three ambulances, maybe more."


Olathe Police have not released any other information regarding the accident's cause or any other circumstances surrounding the crash.

There were no updates available on the other victims of the crash early Tuesday afternoon.

Olathe Police are investigating if a wrong way vehicle may have caused a serious accident this morning on Interstate 35.

The crash was reported shortly before 2:30 Sunday morning in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near Sheridan Street, north of Old U.S. 56 highway.

Police arrived on the scene to report two vehicles with heavy damage and several people trapped inside of a van.



Olathe fire crews reported one of the involved vehicles had rolled over following the crash and had sustained very heavy damage. Firefighters extricated at least three people from vehicles.

Johnson County Med-Act transported three people with critical injuries and at least two others are said to have serious injuries. A total of five ambulances were involved on the call.

The injured people were transported to three different area hospitals.

At 3:52 a.m., Operation 100 News was able to confirm that one of the critically injured, a 22-year-old male, had passed away at an area hospital.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 at Santa Fe (135th Street) were closed until around 6 a.m. Sunday for the accident scene to be investigated and cleaned up.

During the clean up, a mini-van crashed into a barricade that was blocking the southbound lanes. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the driver was not injured in this secondary accident.

Man killed in single car accident identified

Update:

Shawnee Police have identified the driver as James Katajwa, 26, of Shawnee.

Major Bill Hisle says, "Katajwa was westbound on 75th Street just east of Nieman Road when his car left the roadway, hit a light pole, and flipped. Katajwa was pronounced dead at the scene."

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Shawnee Police are investigating after a man was killed in a single vehicle rollover accident Thursday afternoon.

The accident was reported just before 3:10 p.m., on the northeast corner of 75th Street and Nieman Road. Police arrived to find the vehicle on its top in front of the former, VIP Car Wash.

Firefighters worked for about 15 minutes to extricate the driver from the wreckage.


The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and has only been identified as an adult male.

The Lenexa Fire Department also responded and assisted the Shawnee Fire Department at the scene.

Shawnee Police Department Major Bill Hisle says the cause of the accident is under investigation by the department's Traffic Safety Unit.

Maj. Hisle also urged the public to avoid the intersection through the rush hour as the investigation continued.

Man critically injured and pinned in vehicle after collision with tree

Lawrence Police are investigating after a single vehicle crash critically injured one person.

The crash was reported at approximately 4:35 a.m., in the 1000 block of N. 3rd Street, to the south of the Interstate 70 bridge in North Lawrence.

Reports from the scene indicated that the driver was pinned inside the vehicle and a passenger, against the advise of emergency dispatchers, was trying to free the driver from the wreckage.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical units arrived on the scene to confirm a single vehicle versus a tree. The vehicle was said to have heavy front end damage. Medics confirmed that the driver of the vehicle was in critical condition and "pinned under the dash."

Crews worked for about 15 minutes to extricate the driver from the vehicle.

The driver, said to be a male in his early to mid-30's, was transported by Medics to Lawrence Municipal Airport where a LifeStar helicopter was standing by and transported the man to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

Investigators say the man was not wearing a seat belt. I was not immediately clear if the passenger was wearing a seat belt or not. The passenger of the vehicle refused any medical treatment or transport by Medics from the scene.

Head-on crash on K-10 seriously injures one person

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office tells the Lawrence Journal-World the accident occurred about 5:40 a.m..

A westbound Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Jakob Devore, 21 of Ottawa, drifted into the eastbound lane.

An eastbound Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Lauro Salas Garcia, 51 of Topeka, collided head-on with Devore's car. The Sivlerado overturned, trapping Garcia.

Sergeant Steve Lewis of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office tells the Journal-World that Garcia was transported by air ambulance to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. The extent of his injuries were unknown. Devore refused medical treatment.

Douglas County authorities are investigating a head on collision on Kansas Highway 10 bypass this morning just outside of Lawrence.

The crash was reported just before 5:40 a.m. on the South Lawrence Trafficway (K-10 bypass) just to the south of Clinton Parkway.

Deputies arriving at the scene reported two vehicles involved, one had rolled onto its roof and sustained heavy damage. The driver of that vehicle was extricated from the wreckage.

One person was transported from the scene to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka by a LifeStar air-ambulance.

A second person, said to have minor injuries, refused medical treatment.

Authorities closed K-10 to all traffic due to debris being scattered across the highway and for the LifeStar helicopter to land on the roadway. All lanes were reopened at 6:45 a.m. and the crash scene was completely clear by 7:45 a.m..

Two injured in head-on crash

Leavenworth County authorities are investigating after two vehicles collided head-on this morning south of Tonganoxie.

The accident was reported around 5:15 a.m. on U.S. Highway 24-40, also known as Chieftain Road, just to the south of 222nd Street. The crash scene was approximately one mile south of Tonganoxie.

First responders arrived at the scene to report two trucks were involved and both had sustained heavy damage. Each vehicle was said to have been occupied by only a driver. Crews had to extricate both men from their trucks.

A responding EMS unit reported thick fog with visibility of under 0.25 miles. Due to the decreased visibility, one medic unit was dispatched to respond from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical. That Lawrence medic unit was cancelled prior to their arrival at the scene.

Officials say the injuries are serious and both men have been transported to a Kansas City area trauma center.

Initial reports indicate that one man was wearing a seat belt, the other was not. It is estimated that both trucks were traveling at approximately 50 miles per hour when they collided head-on.

Officials are working to determine what led up to the accident and what role the weather may have played. As standard procedure, authorities are also investigating if either driver was possibly intoxicated.

U.S. Highway 24-40 was shut down to all traffic while crews were on the scene. As of 6:30 a.m., there has been no official confirmation as to whether or not the roadway has reopened.

Fatal accident involving a car lodged in a tree

Authorities have identified the victim as 23-year-old, Adam P. Baker.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal accident in Aubry Township this morning. The call was dispatched around 3:15 a.m. Thursday and initial reports indicated a car had struck a tree. As Overland Park Fire units arrived on scene they reported that the vehicle was actually off of the ground, in a tree, southeast of the intersection of 167th Street and Metcalf Avenue.

Due to the location of the vehicle, rescue crews were unable to immediately make contact with the reportedly injured person. The Overland Park Fire Department's Rescue apparatus along with an Engine company and an Engine company from Johnson County Fire District No. 2 were all called to the scene and requested to bring their hydraulic rescue equipment and ladders. An Overland Park Fire Battalion Chief reported the vehicle to be "lodged up into trees" and that the "vehicle is unstable."

After about 15 minutes at the scene, crews confirmed that one person is deceased following the accident.

A spokesperson says the victim is believed to be a male. That male was pronounced deceased as soon as crews made access to him. An extensive extrication was required to remove the man from the vehicle. The vehicle is approximately nearly 100 feet off of the roadway. Authorities say it is believed that speed played a role in this accident.

Traffic on 167th Street was closed east of Metcalf for several hours.

Driver identified in fatal Interstate 435 accident

Update: The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified the deceased driver as, 22-year-old, Clayton S. McCully of Bonner Springs, Kansas. Troopers say McCully was traveling southbound on Interstate 435 at milepost 8.8, or .2 miles south of Woodend Avenue in Edwardsville, when his vehicle collided with a stationary construction vehicle.

According to Troopers, the stationary construction vehicle, a 2006 Chevrolet C5500 Truck, was parked inside a construction zone transition area. The area was marked with orange cones, yellow lights, and an arrow board indicating for traffic to move over to the right. For an unknown reason, McCully's 2002 Ford Ranger, continued into the construction area where it crashed into the rear of the parked truck.

Troopers say McCully was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after an early morning fatality accident on Interstate 435 in Wyandotte County.

Troopers say the accident occurred around 2 a.m. when a southbound 2002 Ford Ranger crashed into the back of a parked construction signal truck at the beginning of a construction site.

Dispatchers say the accident was reported just before 2:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 435 near Woodend Road. The accident was reported by the construction crew. No one was in the signal truck when the accident occurred. There are not believed to be any witnesses to the crash.

Edwardsville Fire and Police responded to the scene and reported a small pickup truck had crashed into a construction truck. Command reported that the single occupant of the pickup truck was deceased and would require extended extrication.

The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department also sent units to the scene who assisted with the accident, including a Haz-Mat unit for a fuel spill. The impact of the pickup truck into the construction truck is said to have punctured the construction truck's fuel tank.

The deceased driver has only been identified as a white male in his mid-twenties.

Troopers say the highway was never closed southbound. Traffic was restricted to only one lane for nearly four hours. All lanes reopened to traffic just after 5:45 a.m..

No other information was immediately available.

Woman gives birth after serious accident, remains in critical condition

Update: The Kansas Highway Patrol says that 33-year-old, Nikki McClure, was driving northbound on Interstate 35 in the right lane at normal highway speeds. McClure's vehicle, a 2000 Hyundai, approached the rear of a slower moving tractor trailer, also in the right lane. The Hyundai struck the rear of the tractor trailer and left the east side of the highway. The vehicle came to a stop against a KDOT fence, while the tractor trailer continued northbound.

McClure was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center where she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. The baby is said to be doing just fine. McClure remains in critical but stable condition according to a statement from her husband.

Troopers continue to seek information regarding the tractor trailer which was struck in the accident. Witnesses reported that the trailer was white or gray and that the truck was white, both were described as very dirty. Troopers say the rear end protection of the trailer should have significant damage, possibly with a piece of the victim's vehicle impaled. Witnesses have reported spotting a possible tractor trailer as far north as the Missouri-Iowa state line on Interstate 35.

The Kansas Highway Patrol would like to speak with the driver and/or occupants of the involved tractor trailer, as well as anyone who might have witnessed the incident around 7 a.m., Wednesday morning. Emergency crews are on the scene of a serious accident in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 near 167th Street, just north of Gardner. The accident was reported just before 7 a.m..

Johnson County Fire District No. 1 arrived on scene and reported one vehicle off of the highway with heavy damage and one person trapped in the vehicle.

Crews worked for just under 20 minutes to extricate the, 33-year-old, woman from the vehicle. The woman is also said to be 7-8 month pregnant. The Kansas Highway Patrol confirms that her injuries are critical. As of 7:30 a.m., the woman has arrived at a Kansas City area Hospital for treatment.

Law Enforcement from Gardner, Johnson County Sheriff's Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol are all in the area. Initial reports indicate that the vehicle was forced off of the roadway by or possibly struck a tractor trailer. That tractor trailer did not stop at the scene and Law Enforcement has very limited information on the involved tractor trailer.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says that it is possible the driver of the tractor trailer was unaware that an accident had occurred.

According to a statement from the Kansas Highway Patrol, the tractor trailer is described as "closed box trailer" and "evidence at the scene suggests the truck may also have icy built up on it from traveling through icy areas." The rear of the trailer should also have "significant damage to the rear end protection system." Witnesses were unable to provide a color or any significant markings on the truck or trailer. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Kansas Highway Patrol at 913-782-8100.

Single vehicle crash in Overland Park critically injures one

It happened just before 2:30 a.m., near Quivira Road and 183rd Street in southern Overland Park.

A 911 caller reported that she witnessed a vehicle crash, possibly into a creek near the intersection, and that she could no longer see the vehicle from her home. Fire/Rescue crews from Johnson County Fire District Number 2 along with Johnson County Sheriff Deputies and Overland Park Police were dispatched to the scene.

Fire crews arrived, at 2:32 a.m. reporting that there was one vehicle, a Kia mini-van, involved which had sustained heavy damage to the front end. One person was found to be trapped inside the vehicle with critical injuries. An additional fire apparatus and Johnson County Med-Act Supervisor were both requested to respond to the scene for assistance with what fire crews called "an extensive extrication."

Crews worked for approximately 25 minutes to remove the trapped driver from the vehicle. The driver is said to be an approximately 30-year-old male.

Rescue crews also reported a "strong smell of Alcohol" from the vehicle.

Police and Firefighters also checked the surrounding area for the possibility that a passenger had been ejected. No other victims were located in their search.

Wrong way driver causes rollover crash

At 2:36 a.m., Saturday morning, fire crews from Merriam Fire and Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 2, along with Police from Merriam and Overland Park were called to investigate a rollover accident in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 near Antioch Road in Overland Park.

Merriam Fire arrived on scene at 2:42 a.m., and reported two vehicles involved, one of which had rolled over and both vehicles sustained moderate to heavy damage.

Each vehicle was occupied by only the driver and both vehicles required extrication to free occupants. Firefighters worked for about 15 minutes to safely remove the injured drivers.

Police say that a vehicle, driven by a 25-year-old female, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 when she struck a northbound vehicle causing that vehicle to roll over. Authorities say the northbound vehicle was being driven by a 29-year-old female.

Both women's injuries are said to be serious but non-life threatening. Med-Act crews reported that the wrong way driver was believed to be intoxicated. However, Police will only say that their investigation is ongoing.

All lanes of northbound Interstate 35 were reopened at 4:30 a.m..

2 Seriously injured in Interstate 35 collision

Just before 2:15 a.m. Lenexa Police along with Olathe Police and Fire were called to the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 between College Boulevard (111th Street) and Interstate 435.

Lenexa Police arrived on scene and reported that there were two cars and a tractor trailer involved in the accident. 

Olathe Fire arrived on scene reporting two vehicles were involved with heavy damage. Crews initially reported two people injured, one critically and another seriously. A short time later, after further assessment, both of the injured were said to have serious injuries. Dispatchers also confirmed that two people were seriously injured.

One Rescue apparatus, from the Olathe Fire Department, was requested to respond to the scene to assist with extrication. Johnson County Med-Act also sent two ambulances and a Battalion Chief to the scene.

A 30-year-old male is said to have been the driver of a pickup truck which was facing the wrong way on the Interstate when units arrived on the scene. That driver is not believed to have been wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The second injured driver is said to be a 31-year-old male who was wearing a seat belt.

Both men are said to have serious but, non-life threatening injuries. Unconfirmed reports indicate that one of the drivers may have been intoxicated. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

As of 6:00 a.m., two inside (left) lanes remain closed as Police continue to investigate the cause of the accident. The right lane remains open to northbound traffic.

Lenexa Police say that all lanes are open to traffic as of 6:40 a.m..

Car vs tractor trailer accident in JoCo

One person is critically injured after a vehicle crashed into the rear of a tractor trailer that was stopped at a stoplight in Gardner. The accident occurred shortly before 8:00 a.m. Thursday at US 56 Highway at the intersection with N Cedar Niles Road.

Fire crews reported that the vehicle was under the tractor trailer and that the vehicle sustained heavy damage. A Police Officer on the scene reports that the vehicle is "under the trailer all the way to the backseat." Officers on the scene have requested a "Truck Inspector" to respond to the scene.

Crews had to extricate the driver, who is said to have critical head and neck injuries. The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle. Unconfirmed reports from the scene indicate that the driver is a male and was conscious when EMS arrived. The tractor trailers driver was not injured.

Police are investigating and no information regarding the driver's age/sex has been released or confirmed.

Two critically injured after I-35 crash in JoCo

Just before 1:20 a.m. early Sunday morning, Olathe Fire, Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover accident. The accident occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 under 119th Street.

Fire units arriving on scene reported that the vehicle had sustained "significant damage" and that two occupants would need to be extricated from the vehicle.

All three northbound lanes of the interstate were shut down while crews worked the scene, traffic was diverted onto 119th Street.

Two men, one in his "mid 30's" and another in his "mid 40's" suffered critical injuries in the accident.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.

All three northbound lanes were reopened to traffic shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday morning.

Rollover accident on Interstate 35, December 11th

At 7:55 a.m., Olathe Fire, Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol were dispatched to a rollover traffic accident on Interstate 35 in Olathe. Police were first to arrive on the scene and reported two vehicles were involved. Both vehicles came to rest on the outside shoulder of the Interstate, just north of 127th Street.

Olathe Fire arrived and confirmed that there were two vehicles involved, one of which sustained "heavy damage" when it rolled over and the other with "moderate damage."

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 24-year-old, Daniel Guevara-Hernandez, of Olathe, was driving a 1997 Nissan passenger car northbound on Interstate 35. Guevara-Hernandez allegedly lost control in the wet conditions and struck the second vehicle causing it to roll.


The second vehicle was a 2000 Isuzu SUV occupied by 42-year-old, Fernando Kuripet and 40-year-old, Josefina Diaz, both of Olathe.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says that Diaz suffered serious injuries, when the vehicle rolled, and had to be extricated from the SUV by the Olathe Fire Department. Guevara-Hernandez and Kuripet both suffered minor injuries. All three people were properly restrained at the time of the accident and were transported to an area hospital by Johnson County Med-Act.
