Alcohol, speed suspected factors in fatal June 7th crash

The accident report regarding this accident was recently updated with new information.

The report states that the dash cam of an officer who was traveling eastbound on Blackfish Parkway captured the events that led up to the westbound truck leaving the road. The truck left the camera's view just before the tree was struck.

A man jogging on the sidewalk, just off the south side of Blackfish Parkway, witnessed the accident in its entirety and was the first to arrive at the crashed truck. That witness told police that the crashed truck's windshield wipers were still on and the truck's engine was still running.

Officers analyzed data retrieved from the truck's computer components and determined that the truck was traveling at 59 miles per hour about two and a half seconds before the crash. The speed at impact with the tree was determined to be closer to 47 miles per hour. The posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour.

The report says that the driver, Colin Michael Pegg, was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the truck.

The investigating officer states that the truck's driver "was traveling too fast for the conditions around the curve on the wet pavement. Toxicology reports are pending and they will determine if drugs or alcohol was also a contributing factor for the crash."

June 14 update:

Operation 100 News has obtained a copy of the accident report for the June 7th accident that killed Colin Michael Pegg, 23, of Lenexa.

The crash narrative states that the truck was westbound on Blackfish Parkway negotiating a curve. The truck spun out on the wet pavement and collided with a curb at a drainage ditch. The truck then left the north side of the roadway where it struck a mailbox and then a tree.

Accident reconstruction illustrations show that the mailbox and the pole it was mounted on were both thrown over 100ft from their original location.

Alcohol is listed in the report as a contributing factor. Final drug and alcohol testing results were still pending when the report was obtained.

The Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is investigating after a single vehicle accident killed a Lenexa man this morning.

An officer patrolling the area found the crash scene in the 13600 block of Blackfish Parkway just before 7:15 Saturday morning.

Police at the scene say the 2007 GMC Sierra pickup was found crashed into a tree with the driver dead inside.

The truck left was traveling westbound on Blackfish Parkway when the driver lost control, travelled off the north side of the roadway, smashed through a mailbox and struck a tree.

Saturday afternoon, Major Doug Orbin identified the driver as 23-year-old, Colin Michael Pegg of Lenexa.

A witness to the aftermath of the accident tells Operation 100 News, "it was obvious that he was not going to be revived."

This is the fourth accident along Blackfish Parkway between Pflumm Road and Park Street since December 2011.

The December 2011 accident involved a home in the 13500 block of Blackfish Parkway. An eastbound car left the roadway, several times, before the car crashed into the front of a home. Previous report with photos.

The home involved in this morning's accident has replaced their mailbox multiple times due to vehicles leaving the roadway and damaging it.

In 2012 a vehicle crashed through the privacy fence just beyond the tree involved in this morning's accident.

More recently, on April 7, 2014, a Lenexa man was injured when his vehicle left the roadway, crashed through a backyard, clipped a house and then struck a tree head on. Previous report with photos.

A 32-year-old Lenexa man was injured Monday morning when he lost control of his vehicle along Blackfish Parkway and brushed against a house before colliding head-on with a tree, authorities said.

The accident occurred around 12:40 a.m. as Matthew Thomas Leeper was traveling west on Blackfish Parkway near Pflumm Road. Leeper's Lexus sedan jumped a curb and drove through a yard on the south side of Blackfish, narrowly missing a wooden privacy fence.

Tire marks in the grass show the car then crossed both lanes of Blackfish to the north side grass, where it ricocheted off of a ground level electrical transformer, plowed through two sides of a wooden privacy fence, scraped along the side of a home's foundation and struck a tree.

Officers at the scene said Leeper was transported to an area hospital with a serious head injury.

No residents were injured and the home that the car struck did not sustain any structural damage.

Shawnee firefighters stood by with the damaged ground transformer until KCP&L could arrive to survey the damage. Several large wires could be seen sticking out of the ground.

A firefighter at the scene said this is the third single car accident that he can remember responding to on the same stretch of Blackfish Parkway. He said the home on the northeast corner of Summit Street and Blackfish Parkway has been struck at least once and another home near the corner of Blackfish Parkway and Pflumm Road was struck in December 2011.

The home involved in the 2011 accident is the same address where the vehicle involved in Monday's accident first left the roadway, narrowly missing the privacy fence. A report, with photos, on the 2011 accident can be found here.

In 2012, a vehicle crashed through a privacy fence of a home at Blackfish Parkway and Park Street. The residents of another home on Blackfish Parkway have replaced their mailbox at least twice due to vehicles leaving the road and crashing into it.

15-year-old driver critically injured in collision with tree

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating after a 15-year-old crashed a car into a tree this morning just outside of Olathe.

The accident was initially dispatched as a car fire, on 167th Street east of U.S. 169 Highway in Olathe Township. Olathe Police arrived on the scene at 1:12 a.m. to find the vehicle fully engulfed. Officers discovered that the driver had been thrown from the vehicle and immediately requested an ambulance.


Johnson County Med-Act and Johnson County Fire District No. 2 reported the driver's injuries to be critical. His injuries are said to include a broken leg.

The vehicle was very heavily damaged in the collision. One source tells Operation 100 News that the vehicle's front bumper was nearly touching the firewall. The tree is said to be 20-25 feet off of the roadway.

The driver has only been identified as a 15-year-old male and Olathe resident. The vehicle involved belongs to his parents and he is believed to have taken off in the car without their permission or knowledge.

Sheriff's Deputies continue to investigate and no other details were immediately available.

Serious injuries reported in separate JoCo crashes

Lenexa Police are investigating two serious injury accidents this morning.

The first crash was reported to authorities just after 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, in the area of 79th Street and Pflumm Road. Officers arrived at the scene quickly and located a vehicle that had left the south side of 79th Street and struck a tree. The driver of the vehicle was unresponsive, still inside the car.

Lenexa firefighters extricated the driver from the vehicle and he was transported by Johnson County Med-Act to an area trauma center. The driver was only described as a male with critical injuries. He was not believed to have been wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred.

Police say the man's injuries are life threatening. Officers continue to investigate what cause the accident.

The scene was on the south side of 79th Street, between Pflumm Road and Noland Road. Officers closed 79th Street to all traffic while crews worked the scene. The road was reopened to all traffic around 3:30 a.m..

Man seriously injured in single vehicle rollover

Emergency crews were called to a second accident in the area of 87th Street and Woodland Road around 2 a.m. Wednesday. This scene is about five miles from the first scene.

A caller reported a vehicle had rolled over on the 87th Street bridge that goes over the railroad tracks, just east of Woodland Road. Again, officers arrived quickly and found the vehicle had came to rest on its side

and blocking both eastbound lanes.

As Lenexa Fire and Johnson County Med-Act arrived at the scene 87th Street was completely shutdown.

A witness tells Operation 100 News that the vehicle way laying on its passenger side and the driver was held in place by his seat belt. "The truck smelled of alcohol," according to the witness.

Firefighters worked for about 15 minutes to stabilize the vehicle and safely remove the driver.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the man, said to be in his 30's, to an area trauma center with serious injuries. Police say the man's injuries are serious but, not immediately life threatening. Officers continue to investigate what caused the accident and if alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

All lanes of 87th Street were reopened as the scene was cleaned up, around 3:30 a.m..

Shawnee Police assisted with blocking off 87th Street during the initial response to the crash.

Two seriously injured in single vehicle accident

Shawnee Police are investigating after a single vehicle accident occurred in the 5400 block of Quivira Road around 5:50 Monday morning.

Shawnee Fire arrived on scene to report a Sport Utility Vehicle had left the roadway and struck a tree. The vehicle sustained "moderate to heavy damage" according to the Fire Department.

Johnson County Med-Act reported one person critically injured and another was seriously injured.

Initial information from a source familiar with the accident indicates that both victims are not believed to have been wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the passenger was reportedly partially ejected. Both of the injured are believed to be in their early 20's.

Shawnee Police continue to investigate the cause of the accident and what role alcohol may have played in it's cause.
