Motorcyclist critically injured in fiery crash with SUV

A man on a motorcycle was transported to an area hospital early Sunday evening after he was hit by an SUV while riding his motorcycle in Lenexa.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics were called to the intersection of 95th Street and Monrovia Street about 5:15 p.m.

Lenexa Police were first to arrive on the scene and reported that the motorcycle was off the road and on fire. The rider was still on the road. An officer applied a tourniquet to stop the injured motorcyclist's leg from bleeding.

The motorcyclist, only identified as a 19-year-old man, was transported by Johnson County Med-Act to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center in critical condition. His injuries included a broken leg and a partially amputated ankle.

A witness, who didn't want to be identified, tells Operation 100 News that the motorcycle was traveling eastbound on 95th Street and the SUV was southbound on Monrovia.

The witness was unsure which vehicle had the green light, but said that the motorcycle was driving fast just before the crash. He says that the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.

The driver and passenger of the SUV did not report any injuries.

The crash was recorded by a traffic camera at the intersection.

Police directed traffic through the intersection as the crash was investigated. Eastbound 95th Street was taken down to only one through lane during that time and both directions of Monrovia, south of the intersection were closed. The intersection reopened to normal traffic just before 8:30 p.m.

Troopers identify man killed in Sunday morning crash in Olathe

The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified a 35-year-old Kansas City, Kansas man as the person killed in a crash with a tractor-trailer early Sunday morning.

Troopers say the crash occurred about 12:02 a.m. Sunday on northbound Interstate 35 just north of the 119th Street overpass.

The Highway Patrol's crash log says a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 was traveling northbound in an unknown lane when the driver lost control, ran off the road to the left, struck the median barrier wall, and became disabled in the left lane.

Troopers say a 2014 International semi-power unit was also traveling northbound in the left lane. The driver of the tractor-trailer did not see the disabled pickup and crashed into it.

The Olathe Fire Department and Johnson County Med-Act responded to the crash scene with Olathe Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol. The pickup's driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Monday, Troopers identified the driver of the pickup truck as Nolvin Nain Lopez-Flores, 35, of Kansas City, Kansas. The crash log says Lopez-Flores was not believed to have been wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was identified as a 62-year-old man from Buckner, Missouri. He was not injured in the crash. While this driver is named in the crash log, Operation 100 News will not be releasing his name as he has not been charged or accused of wrongdoing.

A law-enforcement officer at the scene confirmed to Operation 100 News that the tractor-trailer's driver remained on scene, called for help, and is cooperating with the investigation.

The Highway Patrol's crash log says next of kin notification was made by two Troopers about 11:50 p.m. Sunday.

Radio traffic from the investigating Troopers indicated the Highway Patrol was having difficulty locating a next of kin. The pickup truck involved was registered to Flores-Lopez's employer.

Elderly woman killed, man injured in Merriam crash

Merriam Police are investigating after an elderly woman was killed in a crash late Tuesday morning.

Police say they were called to the intersection of eastbound Shawnee Mission Parkway and Mackey Street just after 10 a.m.

Captain Troy Duvanel of the Merriam Police Department says the crash involved several vehicle and one of them crashed into a rock wall. An elderly couple was in the car which crashed into the rock wall. 

Capt. Duvanel says the elderly male was driving.

Radio traffic indicates the elderly female was riding in the backseat of the car, behind the driver’s seat, and that both were wearing seatbelts.

Firefighters from Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 2 were first to arrive on the scene and reported heavy damage to one vehicle.

worked to divert all eastbound traffic to Antioch Road.

Capt. Duvanel says the man was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. His wife was pronounced dead at the scene. No one in any of the other vehicles was injured.

 The Shawnee Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit was called in to assist with documenting the crash scene for the investigation into its cause.

Police have the eastbound lanes of Shawnee Mission Parkway closed at Antioch Road as the crash is investigated. All eastbound traffic is being diverted onto Antioch Road. Police say the closure of the eastbound lanes will likely remain in place for several hours.

Firefighters from the Overland Park Fire Department and Shawnee Fire Department were also called to the scene. Police from the Overland Park Police Department and Shawnee Police Department were sent to the area to assist with closing Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Overland Park woman killed in late-night crash

Overland Park Police say they're investigating after a woman was killed in a crash on U.S. 69 Highway late Monday.

In a news release, Public Information Officer John Lacy says police were called about 11:10 p.m. for a possible injury accident.

"A 19-year-old Overland Park woman was killed when she struck a concrete wall as she was exiting southbound U.S. 69 Highway at College Boulevard," Ofc. Lacy said in the release.

The woman's name will not be released until her family can be notified.

The Overland Park Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the crash. Anyone with information regarding this crash can contact Overland Park Police at 913-895-6300.

Shawnee Fire Department trains for mass casualty crash

For three consecutive days last week, all 66 Shawnee Firefighters worked their way through a mock mass casualty crash. Each day the scenario involved a school bus, several vehicles, and volunteers playing the role of injured and hysterical people at the scene.

Shawnee firefighters peel back the roof of a vehicle to remove a dummy that was trapped in the simulated crash with a school bus.

Last Wednesday’s scenario involved 17 victims with varying levels of injury spread among three passenger vehicles and the school bus. 11 volunteers filled the school bus, which in the drill had been rear-ended in as part of a chain-reaction crash. One car was partially under the rear of the bus. A second car was on its roof and partly on top of the first car. A third car was rolled onto its side near the front of the bus and was blocking all access to the door of the bus.

Firefighters arrived on the scene of the simulation to find a school bus involved in a crash with three other vehicles and multiple victims trapped.

Firefighters had to use struts, straps, and large chains to stabilize all involved vehicles before they could begin the work of safely removing all of the injured. A firefighter and a Johnson County Med-Act paramedic were lifted through the emergency window of the bus to start evaluating injuries inside as other firefighters worked to cut a hole in the wall of the bus.

One-by-one the injured passengers of the bus were lifted off and then moved across the scene to Johnson County Med-Act’s triage area where their injuries would be evaluated further.

After all of the victims had been removed from the vehicles, firefighters and paramedics gathered to discuss the drill and assess their response and handling of the various aspects.

Shawnee Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Pyle addressed everyone who participated in the exercise after its conclusion.

Deputy Fire Chief Sal Scarpa told Operation 100 News this drill was the first time they had the opportunity to use a school bus.

“On a three or four vehicle crash we may see five or six people with injuries,” Scarpa said. “The school bus changes everything, and we have to be prepared for that.”

The school bus was donated to the department for use in the scenario by the Kincaid Group which operates school buses for the Shawnee Mission School District as DS Bus Lines. Several Kansas City area towing companies donated the passenger vehicles.

Alcohol, speed cited in April 3 crash that injured three

April 21 update:

Operation 100 News has obtained a copy of the accident report for the April 3rd crash that injured three teenagers on Pflumm Road.

The report shows that the 2015 Honda Civic, occupied by three 18-year-old men, was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Pflumm Road at approximately 10:50 p.m.

Shawnee Police have charged Alexander Kiegerl, of Lenexa, with speeding, preliminary breath test refusal, and DUI.

According to the report, police estimate that the vehicle was traveling between 62.05 miles-per-hour and 68.57 miles-per-hour when the car crossed the centerline of Pflumm Road, just north of 67th Street. The posted speed limit on Pflumm Road is 30 miles-per-hour. The report states that the driver lost control, went off of the right side of the road, and struck the east curb. The car crossed the centerline a second time, spun 180 degrees, and then went off the west side of the road, crashing through a chain-link fence, and finally coming to rest when the rear of the car struck a tree.

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, a blood alcohol concentration of .02 percent or greater is a crime in Kansas for drivers under 21 years of age. The accident report states that Kiegerl, 18, tested .09 percent according to the accident report. The legal limit for drivers 21 and older is .08 percent. The accident report identifies the two 18-year-old passengers, one of Lenexa and one of Shawnee. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash. Operation 100 News is not releasing their names as the police report does not list any charges against them.

Three teenagers were injured in an crash late Friday night in Shawnee.

The crash happened at about 11 p.m. near the intersection of 65th Street and Pflumm Road.

Joe Petersen, who lives nearby, said that the car involved in the crash was northbound on Pflumm Road and "doing some fast and furious stuff."

Petersen says police returned to the scene Saturday morning, marking the path of the vehicle.

The spray paint markings left behind on the road indicate that the car was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Pflumm Road, just past 67th Street. Markings then weave back to the correct side of the road where a curb was struck. The collision with the curb appears to have sent the car back across the southbound lane, over a curb, through a chain link fence and finally coming to rest nearly head-on against a tree.

At least two of the fence posts were pulled out of the ground, with their concrete base, several fence posts were sheared in half.

Major Dan Tennis of the Shawnee Police Department said that evidence at the scene of the crash indicates that the car was traveling faster than 50 miles-per-hour. The posted speed limit is 30 miles-per-hour.

Police say the driver of the 2015 Honda Civic involved in the crash an 18-year-old Lenexa man, was arrested on charges of DUI.

Public records show that the driver was processed and then released with a notice to appear. He was not booked into the county jail.

Petersen says there were three teenagers in the car and several beer cans could be seen in the grass near the tree where the car came to rest.

According to Petersen, all three teenagers got out and started to walk away from the crashed car. The crash was witnessed by a woman who was traveling south on Pflumm Road when the car crossed in front of her and then through the fence.

"She slammed on her brakes to avoid hitting them," Petersen said.

One of the teenagers was bleeding, as indicated by a trail of blood droplets on the sidewalk near where the car was left wrecked.

Petersen says two of the teenagers were found near the crashed car and the third was located at his home in Shawnee.

A parent of one teenager involved in the crash, who requested that his name not be used, said that his son was still in the hospital late Saturday morning. His injuries included a broken arm. The parent says his son was a passenger in the 2015 Honda Civic.

Petersen said that he believes the fence saved lives Friday night.

"Had that fence not been there, they would have hit that tree at full steam," he said.

Two people were transported to area hospitals following three different crashes this morning in Shawnee.

The first crash was reported around before 2:30 a.m. in the area of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Noland Road. Arriving officers reported the car was on its roof, on 62nd Terrace west of Richards Drive.

Shawnee firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act reported the person's injuries to be minor. The driver was the only occupant, and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Police at the scene would not answer any questions regarding the accident or the condition of the driver.

Major Dan Tennis tells Operation 100 that the driver's injuries were "very minor."

Officers could be seen photographing an aluminum street light pole that had been knocked down and snapped in half, between Shawnee Mission Parkway and 62nd Terrace. A fence, a speed limit sign, and a concrete retaining wall on the west side of Shawnee Cycle Plaza were also damaged in the crash.

Although officers would not confirm, it appears the Toyota Corolla was westbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway when the car jumped a curb, struck a light pole, crossed 62nd Terrace, struck a speed limit sign, crashed through a chain-link fence post and a concrete retaining wall, causing the car to roll and land on its roof in the east parking lot entrance of PowerPlay Family Entertainment Center.

The second accident was reported around 3:15 a.m. on the ramp from northbound Kansas Highway 7 to westbound 67th Street. Again, one vehicle had rolled, and came to rest off of the highway in a grassy area.

Major Tennis says, "the driver was going the wrong way on the off ramp from northbound K-7 to Shawnee Mission Parkway."

The driver of the second crash was not injured.

The third accident was reported shortly before 3:30 a.m. on northbound Kansas Highway 7, south of Johnson Drive. A vehicle left the right shoulder of the road. It is unclear what the vehicle struck. One occupant of the vehicle was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Dense fog may have contributed to the accidents on Kansas Highway 7. Shawnee and the rest of Johnson County remain under a dense fog advisory until 9 a.m. Saturday.

Major Tennis says "alcohol may be a factor in both, more so than the fog."

All three crashes remain under investigation. Shawnee Police have not released any additional information.

One dead, two others injured in JoCo accident

Olathe Police are investigating following a fatal accident this morning.

Police say the accident was reported around 7:10 Friday morning near the intersection of 159th Street and Lone Elm Road, just south of Interstate 35.

The incident involved a semi-dump truck and a Lincoln Town Car. The semi T-boned the Town Car on the passenger's side of the vehicle.

Sources familiar with the accident confirm to Operation 100 News that the driver of the vehicle was an 81-year-old man. The driver's injures are said to be serious but non life-threatening. Firefighters had to extricate the driver from the Town Car. It is not believed that he was wearing a seat belt.

Police say the passenger in the Town Car was an 83-year-old, female. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene after declining further treatment.

Investigators believe the Town Car was traveling northbound on Lone Elm Road and the semi-dump truck was traveling westbound on 159th Street.

Police have closed the westbound lanes of 159th Street and the northbound lanes of Lone Elm Road.

One person killed in early morning motorcycle accident

The Olathe Police Department's Traffic Unit is investigating after a man was killed in a motorcycle crash this morning.

Police say the accident was reported shortly after 4 a.m., in the area of Northgate Street and South Nelson Road.

Olathe Police arrived to find one sport bike down in the roadway and a person lying in the nearby grass.

Olathe Fire and Johnson County Med-Act arrived at the scene and reported that the person was deceased.

Police say the rider is a white male in his 40's. Initial reports from Police indicate that the male was traveling northbound on Northgate when his motorcycle left the roadway near Nelson road and crashed in the median.

Anyone with information regarding the accident is asked to call Olathe Police at 913-782-0720.

One officer from the Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit was at the crash scene assisting with the investigation.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Police have not released the victim's name.

KHP identifies Lawrence woman killed on the South Lawrence Trafficway

A truck struck and killed a bicyclist Sunday evening on the South Lawrence Trafficway, also known as the Kansas Highway 10 Bypass.

Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers say the accident occurred just before 8:15 p.m. at the intersection of the K-10 Bypass and North 1350 Road, which becomes 27th Street in Lawrence.



A LifeStar air ambulance was dispatched to the scene but, was canceled after the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Highway Patrol's preliminary accident report has identified the bicyclist as Hayley M. Berrios, 29, of Lawrence, Kansas.

Troopers say the Berrios was crossing the K-10 Bypass on a bicycle, headed eastbound to 27th Street. A 1974 Chevrolet truck was traveling northwest on the Bypass when it struck and killed Berrios.

The driver of the truck has been identified as a Lawrence man, he was not injured.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports, the South Lawrence Trafficway was closed between Kasold Drive and the Clinton Parkway exit, near the entrance to Clinton State Park.

Shawnee Police are investigating after a, 12-year-old, Kansas City, Kansas boy was struck by a vehicle this morning. The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m..

Police say the boy was riding a bicycle southbound on Halsey Street and was attempting to cross 51st Street when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle.

The driver who struck the boy, stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

The boy was seriously injured. His injuries are not life-threatening. He was transported to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri by Johnson County Med-Act.

The Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety unit continues to investigate.

Shawnee man killed in motorcycle accident

The Kansas Highway Patrol says a 38-year-old, Shawnee man was killed in a motorcycle accident Monday morning on Interstate 35 in Lenexa.

The Highway Patrol's accident report says the accident happened at approximately 1:25 a.m. on the northbound Interstate 35 exit ramp to 75th Street. The accident scene was just before the long tunnel which runs under U.S. 69 Highway, just inside of Lenexa.


Troopers have identified the rider as Jason M. Gearhart of Shawnee, Kansas. Gearhart was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident report says Gearhart's 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle left the roadway for an unknown reason and went into the right ditch. The motorcycle then struck the rock boulders and the rider was thrown.

Troopers say Gearhart was not wearing a helmet.

Another motorcyclist was following Gearhart when the accident occurred and stopped to report the accident. Troopers say speed may have played a role in the accident, no other vehicles contributed to the accident's cause.

The ramp was closed by Lenexa Police at 1:30 a.m. and reopened to all traffic shortly before 7 a.m..

One seriously injured after vehicle smashes into 'The JO' commuter bus

Shawnee Police are investigating after a car crashed into the side of a commuter bus on Quivira Road.

The accident was reported just after 5:45 Wednesday morning near the intersection of 76th Street and Quivira Road.

Police reported the car involved had sustained heavy damage and the driver was "in and out of consciousness."

Johnson County Med-Act reported the female driver to be seriously injured. No one on 'The JO' bus was injured.

A county inspector is said to be responding to see if the bus remains "drive-able" or if it will need to be towed from the scene. Police are directing traffic near the crash scene.

The Lenexa Fire Department also assisted with the incident.

Rollover accident kills one near Leavenworth and Jefferson County line

Emergency crews from Leavenworth and Jefferson Counties were dispatched on a possible fatality accident in the 25000 block of Ragtown Road in western Leavenworth county around 4:45 Sunday morning. The accident scene is about three miles northeast of McLouth or approximately six miles to the northwest of Tonganoxie.

First responders from Union Township of Jefferson County were first to arrive on the scene and reported a person, possibly deceased, pinned under an overturned vehicle.

Late Sunday afternoon, Leavenworth County Sheriff's Deputies tell Operation 100 News a 25-year-old man from rural Jefferson County was killed in this morning's accident.

Deputies say the 25-year-old man was a passenger in a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old man from the Topeka area. The vehicle, for an unknown reason, left the roadway and overturned east of 251st Street on Ragtown Road.

The 25-year-old was killed in the accident, the driver sustained only minor injuries and was cooperating with the investigation. Deputies say the driver is not being held in custody as the investigation continues.

Deputies continue to investigate if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident's cause. The man killed in the accident has not been officially identified as of late Sunday afternoon.

Off-duty police officer killed in Wednesday morning crash

Update:

Lawrence Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed early Wednesday evening that the man killed in this morning's accident was an off-duty Lawrence police officer.

Troopers say Officer Matthew Edward Klock, 29, was killed when his 2012 Nissan Altima collided with a pole near W. 6th Street and Wakarusa Drive.

The Kansas Highway Patrol crash log of the incident says that Klock's vehicle was eastbound on the inside lane of 6th Street, when the vehicle went left of center and struck a light pole on the east side of the intersection with Wakarusa Drive. Klock was not wearing a seat belt. Troopers continue to investigate what, if any, role alcohol or slick roads may have played in the accident's cause.

Klock joined the Lawrence Police Department in 2007.

Lawrence Police Sergeant Trent McKinley told 6 News Lawrence that "a member of the force drove to Derby, Kansas, where Klock grew up, to personally notify family members this morning."

Lawrence Police are investigating this morning after one person was fatally injured in an apparent single vehicle accident.

Officers were initially dispatched on a non-injury accident at the intersection of W. 6th Street and Wakarusa Drive just after 2:15 Wednesday morning.

On arrival at 2:20 a.m., officers reported the lone occupant of the vehicle was unconscious. Medics were immediately dispatched to the scene and upon their arrival reported one vehicle with "major damage".

The occupant was initially said to be in critical condition as of 2:30 a.m.. Medics pronounced the person to be deceased at the scene, just before 2:40 a.m..

Police have shutdown the intersection completely as they investigate the accident.

Very few details were immediately available. It remains unclear what the vehicle struck.

Interstate 35 reopens following three vehicle crash

Merriam Police were forced to shut down all lanes of Interstate 35 for about an hour this morning following an injury accident.

Officials say three vehicles were involved in the crash which began after a Jeep spun out and was then struck by another vehicle. A third vehicle then struck the vehicle already involved.

Three people were transported from the scene. One of those injuries was said to be serious but, non-life threatening.

The Interstate was closed at 3:20 a.m. and all lanes were cleared at 4:20 a.m.

One person seriously injured in early morning crash

The Overland Park Police Department is investigating what led up to a serious crash on Metcalf Avenue early this morning.

First responders were called to the 7600 block of Metcalf Avenue shortly after 2:30 a.m., Thursday. Firefighters arrived on the scene to report one of the vehicles had been heavily damaged.

One person had to be extricated from the vehicle, which was believed to have struck a utility pole. That person's injuries were said to be serious but, non-life threatening.

Two other people were said to have sustained minor injuries.

Police are investigating if alcohol may have played a role in the accident.

No other details were immediately available.

Two seriously injured in Lawrence crash

Lawrence Police and Fire Medical crews were called to the intersection of W. 23rd Street and Naismith Drive at 2:52.

Arriving police officers reported two vehicles were involved and one person would need to be extricated from the crashed vehicle. Fire Medical crews arrived to report both vehicles sustained "moderate damage." Two people were injured, one in each vehicle, those injuries were both initially said to be serious. One of the injured driver's condition was upgraded to critical after further assessment by units at the scene.

Incident Command requested a LifeStar Helicopter respond to the scene at 3:05. The air-ambulance arrived over the scene at 3:18 and safely landed in the Hobby Lobby parking lot (1801 W. 23rd Street) at 3:20. Crews worked for about 20 minutes to extricate the pinned driver of one vehicle.

The critically injured person, only described as a male in his mid 20's, was transported by ambulance to the helicopter and was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Initial reports from investigators indicate he was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.

The seriously injured person, only described as a female in her late 30's, was transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Initial reports indicate that she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Lawrence Police continue to investigate the accident.

Victim identified in fatal hit-and-run accident

Overland Park Police have identified the victim of last night's accident as 35-year-old Tiana J. Beall of Overland Park, Kansas. 

Authorities say they have located the vehicle involved in the accident. No arrests have been made in the case at this time. Detectives are actively pursuing leads and no other information is currently available.

Overland Park Police are investigating after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, late Tuesday night.

Around 10:40 p.m. emergency personnel responded to the area of W. 71st Street, just to the east of Metcalf Avenue on reports of a hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian.

A 35-year-old, white female, was found critically injured. Johnson County Med-Act transported her to a local hospital, where she later died as a result of her injuries. The victim has not been identified.

The Overland Park Police Department's Traffic Safety Officers continue to investigate the accident.

Lawrence man killed in early morning accident

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office confirms to Operation 100 News reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World that at 34-year-old Lawrence man was killed in this accident at 2:10 a.m..

Deputies say David Leroy Smart was driving northbound near the 2000 block of County Road 1045 when his 1997 Chevrolet truck drifted into a ditch and struck a culvert.

Sergeant Steve Lewis tells the Journal-World that Mr. Smart was pronounced dead at 3:52 a.m. by emergency room staff at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews were called just before 2:30 to the 2000 block of E 1400 Road (County Road 1045) for a single vehicle accident.

Deputies arrived at the scene to find on vehicle had left the roadway and crashed into a culvert. The driver of the vehicle sustained critical injuries and was pinned in the crash.

Fire Medical crews arrived to report the vehicle on its side off of the roadway with "major damage." Medical crews confirmed the driver to be pinned with critical injuries and immediately requested a LifeStar helicopter respond to the scene.

Crews worked approximately 30 minutes to extricate the injured driver from the vehicle.

At 3:30, LifeStar's pilot reported that the patient had "coded", meaning they had stopped breathing, and that the injured person would be transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by ground ambulance. LifeStar's medic crew rode on the ambulance to assist with patient care.

Sheriff's Deputies closed all lanes of E 1400 Road between N 2000 Road and N 2100 Road and LifeStar was landed on the roadway. The roadway remains closed as the accident investigation continues. Deputies have requested public works to bring barricades to assist with blocking the roadway.
