Smoke alarms alert blind resident of smoldering fire

The Shawnee Fire Department says smoke alarms alerted a blind resident of a smoldering fire next to a water heater on Thursday evening.

Firefighters from Shawnee and Overland Park were called to the home at 10831 West 76th Street just after 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

"Fire crews found a smoldering fire next to the water heater for the home and quickly extinguished the fire," said Shawnee Fire Marshal Corey Sands. "It appeared that combustible items were stored next to the water heater."

The resident safely exited the home before firefighters arrived. Firefighters located two cats and were able to get them out of the house, and into a neighbor's garage.

No injuries were reported and damage is estimated at $1,500.

One seriously injured after vehicle smashes into 'The JO' commuter bus

Shawnee Police are investigating after a car crashed into the side of a commuter bus on Quivira Road.

The accident was reported just after 5:45 Wednesday morning near the intersection of 76th Street and Quivira Road.

Police reported the car involved had sustained heavy damage and the driver was "in and out of consciousness."

Johnson County Med-Act reported the female driver to be seriously injured. No one on 'The JO' bus was injured.

A county inspector is said to be responding to see if the bus remains "drive-able" or if it will need to be towed from the scene. Police are directing traffic near the crash scene.

The Lenexa Fire Department also assisted with the incident.
