Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers investigating the crash

A Leavenworth man died in a fatal crash on northbound Interstate 435 at Johnson Drive Thursday morning.

The wreck happened about 6:45 a.m. when Gregory Sifferman, 51, of Leavenworth swerved off the roadway and struck the bridge pillar for northbound I-435 at Johnson Drive, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. He was driving a black 2000 Dodge Durango.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Traffic was limited to one lane as Troopers investigated the scene Thursday morning. All lanes were open shortly after 8 a.m.

Suspect charged in JoCo double homicide

Lenexa Police say they have arrested a person of interest in last week's triple shooting which left two men dead and another critically injured.

Johnson County booking records show that Alex Wayne Brune, 27, of Lenexa was arrested around 8:30 Wednesday evening.

Brune faces two counts of premeditated first-degree murder and is being held on $2,000,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon.

The criminal complaint shows that Brune is also charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated burglary.

The complaint alleges that Brune was attempting to rob Brian Baskind and his step-father Clifford Preston.

During the failed robbery attempt, Brune allegedly killed both Baskind and Preston. Brune was also shot during the incident and he called 911 to report that he had been shot. The 911 call brought officers to the home, where Brune told officers that two men were dead inside. At that time, Brune claimed that he did not know who had shot him or the other men.

Lenexa Police are investigating after three men were found shot inside a home.

Master Police Officer Dan Friesen says at 10:08 p.m. Wednesday, Lenexa Police Communications received a 911 call from an individual who said he had been shot.

The man was not able to provide dispatchers with an address. Dispatchers kept the man on the phone and plotted his location, using cell phone pings, to the 8500 block of Hallet Street.

Officers located the injured man in the front yard of the home and transported him to a Med-Act ambulance that was staged nearby.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the man in critical condition to an area trauma center. The man remains hospitalized Thursday afternoon.

MPO Friesen says, "during the initial response, officers learned there may be additional victims inside a residence. It was later determined two individuals inside the residence were deceased."

Police say Brian S. Baskind, 47, and Clifford E. Preston, 79, were found dead inside the home. The man who was wounded has not been officially identified.

"The relationship between the three individuals is unknown," according to MPO Friesen.

The Crime Scene Investigations Unit from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office Criminalistics Laboratory continues to process the scene.

Man killed in accident at Shawnee FedEx facility identified

Shawnee Police are investigating after a 21-year-old died from injuries sustained at a FedEx Ground sorting facility Tuesday morning.

Police have identified the man as Nicholas Huston.

Johnson County Med-Act was called to the facility, located at 8000 Cole Parkway in southwest Shawnee, just before 8 a.m. on reports of a person injured after a fall. Before emergency crews could arrive, personnel at the facility reported that the injured man had stopped breathing. Security and other FedEx personnel conducted CPR until Shawnee firefighters arrived.

Captain Jodi Andrews of the Shawnee Police Department says, "upon arrival, officers found a male subject lying on the pavement."

Huston was resuscitated at the scene and said to be in critical condition with a head injury. Johnson County Med-Act, with the assistance of Shawnee Fire, rushed the Huston to an area trauma center where he later passed away as a result of his injuries.

Witnesses told police that the Huston had fallen out of a golf cart.

Major Bill Hisle says there were four men riding in a golf cart, when one fell out for some reason. Officers are still investigating exactly what happened.

Tuesday's accident is the third fatal incident at this same FedEx Ground sorting facility since March 2013. Links to previous Operation 100 News reports can be found below.

Lawrence woman killed in rural Douglas County accident

Deputies say a 68-year-old Lawrence woman died at the scene of a single vehicle accident in rural Douglas County early Friday.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office Lt. Steve Lewis tells my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World, deputies responding on the crash just before 2 a.m. and discovered the woman's body about 30 yards from a wrecked 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

The accident occurred in the 600 block of U.S. Highway 56, near the unincorporated community of Globe.

Deputies believe the vehicle was traveling westbound at high speed and went into the north ditch for unknown reasons.

The car then struck a pasture driveway and went airborne, about 20 feet in the air, tearing down a power line. The driver was ejected through the passenger window as the car flipped end over end. The woman was the only occupant of the car and was not wearing a seatbelt.


The accident was reported by a passerby who spotted the car crashed off of the highway.

VIDEO: Man dies after being rescued from inside burning home

A man rescued from his burning home Saturday morning in Overland Park, has passed away.

A neighbor alerted firefighters of smoke pouring from a home in the 10300 block of Reeds Drive just after 9 a.m.. Saturday. The address is west of Nall Avenue and south of 103rd Street.

Firefighters entered the home where they reported a working fire. About a minute later a second crew entered the home and located a male victim. Firefighters removed the man from the home, to the care of Johnson County Med-Act.

Med-Act personnel along with an Overland Park Fire paramedic performed life-saving measures on the scene and rushed the man to an area hospital in critical condition.

Overland Park Fire officials confirmed, Saturday evening, that the man had passed away from his injuries.

Investigators say the male victim was found in the same room as the fire. His exact cause of death remains under investigation, pending an autopsy.

Firefighters reported the fire to be under control at 9:40 a.m.. The fire heavily damaged the home's main floor and there is smoke damage throughout the structure.

The fire is believed to have been sparked by improperly disposed smoking materials. Investigators believe there were no working smoke alarms in the home.

Consolidated Fire District No. 2 was also on the scene assisting Overland Park Fire.

No other injuries were reported.

Shawnee Mission West Junior killed in crossover crash

A crossover accident on Interstate 435 near Lackman Road in Lenexa took the life of a Shawnee Mission West High School Junior on Tuesday afternoon.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the accident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. when, 17-year-old, Houston St. John was traveling eastbound on Interstate 435 when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving, a 2006 Pontiac G6. The vehicle spun out and crossed the median into the westbound lanes of the interstate when it was struck, in the driver's door, by a westbound 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck. The driver of the Dodge truck, a 62-year-old Leavenworth, Kansas man, sustained minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene.

Troopers say both drivers were wearing seat belts and both vehicles were heavily damaged.

St. John's friends tell Operation 100 News that he enjoyed participating in musicals and other performing arts at Shawnee Mission West, YouTube video below. He also played on the football team in the past as a middle linebacker and wore the number 57.

Lawrence man killed in K-10 crossover accident

One person was killed in a four vehicle accident on Kansas Highway 10 in Lenexa, early Tuesday evening.

Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers say the accident occurred at approximately 4:50 p.m. on K-10 in between Renner Boulevard and Ridgeview Road in Lenexa.



Troopers say a 2006 Ford Passenger Van sideswiped a 1983 Dodge Pickup while both were traveling eastbound on K-10. The collision caused the truck's driver to lose control and the truck began to spin. The spinning truck crossed the grassy median and entered the westbound lanes of traffic.

A westbound 2010 Dodge Pickup struck the driver's door of the out of control truck. The westbound truck was then struck on the passenger's side by a westbound 2001 Lexus SUV.

The driver of the 1983 Dodge Pickup that crossed the median and was struck in the driver's door, was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified the driver that was killed as, 52-year-old, Randy R. Schimmel of Lawrence. Troopers say Schimmel was not wearing a seat belt.

The 2006 Ford Passenger Van was driven by a 27-year-old, Raytown, Missouri man. He was not injured and Troopers say he was not wearing a seat belt. The 2010 Dodge pickup was being driven by a 42-year-old, Lenexa man and the 2001 Lexus SUV was driven by a 55-year-old, Shawnee woman. Both of these drivers did not report any injuries and were wearing seat belts.

A fifth vehicle, an Acura passenger car, swerved off of the right shoulder of the highway to avoid the accident. That vehicle did not make contact with any other vehicles and the driver was not injured or identified.

During the crash investigation and clean up, all lanes of K-10 were closed in both directions. The highway was reopened to normal traffic shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Woman injured in two-alarm house fire dies

Update:

The Leawood Fire Department confirmed Friday morning that, 53-year-old, Diane Jakobe passed away as a result of the injuries she suffered in Tuesday's house fire.

Officials say the age of the home made the fire harder to extinguish. Firefighters found several layers of roofing, keeping the fire contained inside the home. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A Leawood woman was critically injured when her house caught fire Tuesday evening.

The call was dispatched around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at 9441 Meadow Lane, just west of Lee Boulevard and north of 95th Street, in Leawood. (Map below)

Fire crews reported flames visible from one corner of the home on their arrival and received reports that a woman lived in the home alone.

Crews quickly located an unresponsive woman and rescued her from the structure. Johnson County Med-Act reported that the woman was not breathing and began CPR. Med-Act transported the woman to an area hospital in critical condition.

A second alarm was dispatched, just after the woman was rescued, and all crews were ordered to evacuate from the structure due to the threat of the roof collapsing. Crews reported heavy fire in the homes attic with flames visible through the roof.

Two firefighters were also injured, a Leawood Fire Department spokesperson said, "they might need a few stitches but, they were not seriously injured."

The fire was reported to be under control around 8:30 p.m.. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available.

The Leawood Fire Department was assisted by the Overland Park Fire Department and Consolidated Fire District No. 2.

Leavenworth County teenager killed in crash

One person has died following a crash in Leavenworth County earlier today.

Troopers say at approximately 7:30 a.m., a 2002 Ford Explorer was northbound on 166th Street when the 16-year-old driver failed to yield to a tractor trailer that was westbound on U.S. Highway 24-40. The tractor trailer struck the passenger's door of the Explorer and both vehicles came to rest off of the roadway.

Both occupants of the Ford Explorer had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters.

The driver of the Explorer has been identified as Tristan Hayes of Tonganoxie. He suffered serious injuries in the crash. His passenger, identified as 15-year-old, Sehalyn Hayes of Tonganoxie was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital where she died Tuesday afternoon.

The tractor trailer's driver, Wilban Araujo, 45 of Pensacola, Florida, was not injured in the crash.

One person killed in a single vehicle accident

Prairie Village Police are investigating what caused a single vehicle accident this morning.

Police and fire crews were called to the 6700 block of Roe Avenue around 2:10 a.m.. Mission Police had been checking the area following reports of a suspicious vehicle in their city and were first to arrive at the crash scene. Officers reported that the driver appeared to be unresponsive.

Johnson County Med-Act and Consolidated Fire District No. 2 arrived on the scene to report the accident involved one vehicle which was heavily damaged in a front yard. Crews pronounced the male driver dead at the scene a short time later.

Police say the vehicle, a white Suzuki Forenza, was traveling southbound on Roe Avenue when the driver lost control, left the roadway and struck a tree.

Officers are also investigating the possibility that the crashed vehicle is the same one that Roeland Park and Mission officers were looking for following a report of a suspicious vehicle near 51st Street and Roe Boulevard. There are also reports that the vehicle may be stolen.

The Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is assisting with the crash investigation.

Prairie Village Police dispatchers say that Roe Avenue remains closed as the investigation continues.

No other details were immediately available.

Suspect in fatal shooting found dead in KCMO

Mission Police say this morning's disturbance was a dispute between two brothers.

Officers were called to 5799 Broadmoor at about 7:14 this morning. Arriving units located, 57-year-old, Todd A. Pruitt of Shawnee, shot in the parking lot. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Investigators say the suspect is Todd's brother, Robert Pruitt, 58 of Merriam. Witnesses reported Robert fleeing the scene in a medium blue Ford Fiesta. That vehicle, a rental car, had been reported stolen.

Around 12:20 p.m., officers searching a park in the area of Interstate 435 and Holmes in Kansas City, Missouri, located the suspect, Robert Pruitt, who had taken his own life.

Police say that the family has been notified. No other details are currently being released.

Mission Police are investigating a shooting this morning.

Police were called to the area of Johnson Drive and Broadmoor Street at 7:15 a.m. on what was initially reported as an armed disturbance. Officers located a subject laying in the parking lot of an office building at 5799 Broadmoor Street with multiple gunshots wounds.

The victim is said to be a male in his late 40's or 50's with as many as five gunshot wounds. Police confirm the victim has died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the forehead and at least three to the chest. Police say they believe the victim knew his attacker.

Officers have confirmed the suspect is a white male in his 40's, approximately 6 feet tall, 180lbs. The suspect reportedly fled in a blue Ford Fiesta hatchback with Illinois license plates. The vehicle fled northbound from the scene on Broadmoor. Police say they have a lead on a suspect, no other details are currently being released. Police say they have several witnesses to the incident.

Police ask anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Mission Police or the TIPS Hotline 816-474-TIPS (8477).

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigators are assisting with the investigation.

Victim identified in fatal hit-and-run accident

Overland Park Police have identified the victim of last night's accident as 35-year-old Tiana J. Beall of Overland Park, Kansas. 

Authorities say they have located the vehicle involved in the accident. No arrests have been made in the case at this time. Detectives are actively pursuing leads and no other information is currently available.

Overland Park Police are investigating after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, late Tuesday night.

Around 10:40 p.m. emergency personnel responded to the area of W. 71st Street, just to the east of Metcalf Avenue on reports of a hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian.

A 35-year-old, white female, was found critically injured. Johnson County Med-Act transported her to a local hospital, where she later died as a result of her injuries. The victim has not been identified.

The Overland Park Police Department's Traffic Safety Officers continue to investigate the accident.

Police identify men killed in Saturday crash

Overland Park's traffic unit is investigating after a two vehicle crash killed two men Saturday morning.

Dispatchers say the accident was reported around 5:40 Saturday morning at the intersection of 103rd Street and Nall Avenue.

First fire crews arrived on the scene to report two vehicles involved and one had rolled onto its side. Police reported both vehicles would require extrication. A fire crew reported one vehicle would require extensive extrication.

Police say a Ford F-250 pickup truck was southbound on Nall Avenue when it ran a red light and struck a Buick passenger car which was traveling westbound on 103rd Street. The collision caused the pickup truck to roll onto its side.

Authorities have identified the driver of the Ford F-250 as, 49-year-old, Wayne A. Willeford of Prairie Village and the driver of the Buick as, 77-year-old, William G. Pennington of Overland Park.

Willeford was pronounced deceased at the scene, while Pennington was transported to an area hospital where he died a short time later, according to Overland Park Police.

Domestic disturbance call results in one man's death

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been called to investigate after a domestic disturbance this morning in Miami County turned fatal. A statement released this morning has identified the deceased man as 32-year-old, Travis L. Maupin.

Authorities confirm the Osawatomie Police Department responded on a report of a domestic disturbance in the 1100 block of Chestnut Avenue shortly before 1:30 this morning. Officers found a female who reported she had been strangled during a disturbance with Mr. Maupin.

Maupin had barricaded himself inside a home. Osawatomie Police requested assistance from the Miami County Sheriff's Office at the scene. As that backup was arriving, Maupin emerged from the residence and ran from officers on foot.

Officers caught up with Mr. Maupin about a block away from the scene, where he continued to resist arrest. One officer deployed a Taser and Maupin was taken into custody. Prior to being transported to jail, officers reported that Maupin had become unresponsive.

Miami County EMS was already on the scene treating the female who was injured in the initial disturbance. Medics reported Maupin had stopped breathing and requested a second ambulance respond "emergency" to the scene on Chestnut. He was rushed to Miami County Medical Center, where he later died.

A statement released this morning says it is normal protocol for the KBI to be brought in to investigate a death that occurs while a subject is in police custody.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Maupin was discharged, at the completion of his sentence, from the Lansing Correctional Facility in December 2008. He was convicted in Anderson County, Kansas on charges of Forgery and Aggravated Battery from 2006.

Pedestrian killed when struck by a train in Johnson County

Merriam Police are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a train just east of the intersection of 57th Street and Kessler Lane. Police received a call from the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe reporting one of their trains had struck a pedestrian around 1:55 a.m..

Police arrived on scene and had located the pedestrian by 2 a.m.. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The railroad crossing just west of Interstate 35 on Johnson Drive was closed for about five hours as the involved train stopped at the scene for Police to investigate the accident.

The trains engineer tells Police that he saw a male lying on the tracks but, was unable to stop the train to avoid hitting the man. Investigators believe the train was traveling 30-35 miles per hour when the man was spotted on the tracks.

Police ask anyone who may have been in the area around the time the incident occurred to contact them. Officers are also checking with surrounding businesses equipped with security cameras that may have captured the incident on tape.

Driver identified in early morning fatal accident

Shawnee Police are investigating after a single vehicle accident killed a driver in western Shawnee early Tuesday morning.

The call was dispatched at 2:21 a.m., with a report of an accident involving a pickup truck which had left the roadway and struck a tree near Mize Elementary School at 7301 Mize Road. Initial reports indicated the driver was partially ejected from the truck and unresponsive.

Johnson County Med-Act arrived on scene and reported a pickup truck versus a tree. Shawnee Fire reported that the truck had sustained heavy damage in the crash. The driver was confirmed to be deceased a short time later.

The Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is on scene handling the investigation. No other injuries were reported.

Tuesday afternoon Police have identified the victim as, 21-year-old, Damian Cody Hall of Shawnee. Hall was the only occupant of the 2006 Ford F-150 which left the roadway struck a light pole and then a tree. Hall was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say Hall was driving home from work when the accident occurred.

Officers continue to investigate the accident.

Two fatal and two others critically injured in Kansas City crash

Update: The Kansas Highway Patrol says that a Roeland Park Police Officers spotted a vehicle driving around, acting suspicious in the Walmart parking lot. The Officer followed the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to yield to the officer, and continued northbound on Roe lane at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control of the SUV on a curve and crashed into a bridge pillar. All seven occupants were ejected from the vehicle, which caught fire and burned.

Authorities have identified the two fatalities as; 19-year-old Alexis J. Medina and 18-year-old Karla Robledo, both of Kansas City, Missouri. Medina was pronounced deceased at the crash scene, Robledo was transported to an area hospital where she later died.

The other victims range in age from 15 to 19 years of age. Troopers say no one in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt.

Shortly after 3 a.m. Roeland Park Police reported a vehicle at a high rate of speed northbound on Roe Lane approaching County Line Road. The officer reported that the vehicle failed to yield for him and that he was not in pursuit of the vehicle. The officer requested that dispatchers notify Kansas City, Kansas Police. Seconds later the Roeland Park officer reported the vehicle had crashed on Roe Lane under Interstate 35. Officers immediately requested an emergency response from Kansas City, Kansas Fire and EMS for several ejections and a car fire.

Kansas City, Kansas Fire initially dispatched a two fire apparatus response for a car fire at the location, that response was then upgraded to include a Shift Commander and one ambulance. The first fire apparatus to arrive reported one vehicle "fully involved" with fire. A short time later Incident Command requested a total of five ambulances to the scene. Police say six of the vehicle's seven occupants were ejected during the crash.

One male was pronounced deceased at the scene. A female, said to be in her "late teens", was transported from the scene with extremely critical injuries, she has since passed away at an area hospital. Two others remain in critical condition. A total of five people were transported by KCK EMS from the scene to area hospitals.

Victim's ages are said to range from 15 to mid 20's and include both males and females. Investigators from the Kansas Highway Patrol say only one vehicle was involved.

The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the accident.

Car vs train accident kills one person north of Lawrence

Around 2:20 a.m. Douglas County Emergency Dispatchers received a report of a car versus train injury accident north of Lawrence. The accident occurred just west of the U.S. Highway 24-40 and U.S. 24-59, which is known as Tee Pee Junction. The accident scene is just before the entrance to Riverfront Park.

Sheriff's Deputies arrived and, upon locating the involved vehicle, immediately reported that one person was deceased. Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical has since confirmed that the one occupant is deceased. Emergency crews report that with the train's crew, they have walked the length of the train and confirmed that only one person was in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The involved train was reportedly a southbound Union Pacific "coal train" which struck the victim's vehicle on the passengers side as it was traveling westbound, crossing between the railroad gates. No one on the train reported being injured.

Initial reports indicated that the train's conductor witnessed the vehicle drive around the crossing gates just before the accident.

The victim has be identified as, 40-year-old, Aimee Ziegler of Lawrence. The Lawrence Journal-World reports Ziegler was a counselor at Lawrence Free State High School.

Fatal shooting reported in Prairie Village

The Prairie Village Police Department is investigating after a reported shooting at an address in the 8000 block of Cornith Drive shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday.

A crew with Consolidated Fire District No. 2 of Northeast Johnson County reported that one person was deceased at the scene.

No other details were immediately available.

Suspicious death investigation in Lenexa

Updated Story: Dominic Camacho has been arrested and charged with First-degree murder in his wife's death. He is being held on $1,000,000 bond. Prosecutors allege that Dominic Camacho strangled his wife, Leslie Camacho, to death inside their Lenexa home early Wednesday morning.

Lenexa Police are investigating a suspicious death this morning in the 13000 block of West 94th Place.

Police say they were called to an address in the 13000 block of West 94th Place before 2 a.m., Wednesday, after receiving a report of a possible Domestic Disturbance. When Officers arrived they found a woman, later identified as, 35-year-old, Leslie Ann Camacho, dead inside the home. Camacho's husband was found in the home and was taken to Lenexa Police Headquarters for questioning.

Johnson County Med-Act responded to the scene shortly after 2 a.m.. One person was reported to be deceased at the address.

Officers secured the home until a search warrant could be obtained. Johnson County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigators arrived on scene shortly before noon, Wednesday, when the search warrant arrived.
