Man arrested following short car and foot chase in Shawnee

A man in his 40s is in police custody after leading Shawnee officers on a short car chase early Saturday morning.

An officer spotted the car driving without a front tire on westbound 75th Street near Switzer Road about 4:45 a.m.

Officers caught up with the car near Quivira Road and attempted to make a traffic stop. The driver continued driving westbound at speeds of 15-45mph on 75th Street and then onto Blackfish Parkway.

The car came to a stop on Blackfish Parkway just west of Cottonwood Street. As the officer waited on backup before approaching the car, the driver jumped out and ran north into the neighborhood.

Officers searched the suspect's car after his arrest.

A responding Shawnee officer spotted the man running between houses along 73rd Street and took him into custody after a brief struggle.

Several Lenexa officers also responded to assist with the foot chase.

Only identified as a man in his early 40s, the suspect was transported by Johnson County Med-Act with minor injuries from the scuffle with police.

No officers were injured, and no other details were immediately available.

One dog killed, three residents displaced after Sunday afternoon apartment fire

In a news release, Lenexa Deputy Fire Chief Scott Hoch says firefighters arrived at 3:27 to find a fire in one first-floor apartment of the three-story building.

Lenexa Police assisted firefighters with evacuating 16 apartments in the building.

Deputy Chief Hoch says firefighters rescued one dog as they worked to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters attempted to resuscitate the dog in front of the building, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

The fire was reported to be under control at 3:40 p.m. and out at 3:51 p.m. Other residents of the building were able to return to their apartments after the fire was extinguished.

Damage from the fire, smoke, and water was confined to one first floor apartment according to the news release.

Fire investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire, and a damage estimate has not been determined.

The Red Cross is assisting three residents who were displaced.

12 displaced, four rescued from late-night apartment fire

The Lenexa Fire Department says they rescued four people from balconies and a window when they arrived on the scene of an apartment fire late Tuesday night.

Firefighters were dispatched to the London House Apartments, 12801 Lord Nelson Drive at 10:19 p.m. The apartment complex is located immediately northwest of 99th Street and Rosehill Road.

In a news release, Deputy Fire Chief Scott Hoch says the first firefighters arrived on scene at 10:22 and reported light smoke visible from the front of the building.

"Personnel immediately identified trapped occupants on the second floor of the building at a front window and rear balcony with an active fire in the common hall at the rear of the structure," Hoch says in the release.

Two residents of an apartment on the first floor self-evacuated and were then treated by Johnson County Med-Act paramedics for smoke inhalation. One of those residents, only identified as a woman in her 50s, was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for additional treatment. Her condition was described as "stable."

Fire officials say the fire was confined to the first and second floor common hallway and was reported under control at 10:43 p.m.

Four apartments were damaged by smoke and heat according to the fire department.

Twelve residents were displaced and are all receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

Firefighters rescued a cat from the building as they worked to extinguish the fire. A second cat was located and removed from the building after the fire was out.

"Preliminary damage estimates to the structure and contents exceed $100,000," Hoch says in the release. "The cause of the fire is currently under investigation."

The Overland Park Fire Department also responded to assist with the fire.

One person killed in fiery western Lenexa crash

The Lenexa Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is investigating after one person was killed in a fiery crash on Prairie Star Parkway late Wednesday evening.

It happened about 9:15 p.m. in the median of Prairie Star Parkway just east of Tallgrass Drive in western Lenexa.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez says officers arrived to find the car engulfed in flames.

Lenexa firefighters worked for about five minutes to extinguish the flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. An extensive search of the immediate area was conducted to ensure no one had been ejected from the car. No one was located in the search.

Police believe the car was driving westbound at high speed when it left the road.

"[The car] left the roadway into the center median and struck large landscaping boulders," Ofc. Chavez said. "We don't have any info on the deceased yet."

The crash forced officers to close Prairie Star Parkway in both directions between Lone Elm Road and Prairie Creek Road for several hours.

One man critically injured in fiery crash with tree

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez says officers were called by a passing motorist who saw the vehicle crashed into a tree and on fire.

"When officers arrived, they extinguished the fire with their in-car fire extinguishers," Ofc. Chavez said in an emailed response to questions. "The driver was transported by Med-Act to the hospital for numerous burns."

Shawnee woman arrested after allegedly trying to stab male acquaintance

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez of the Lenexa Police Department says officers were called to the victim's apartment about 10:15 p.m.

"An adult female attempted to stab an adult male acquaintance at an apartment in the 9500 block of Monrovia," Ofc. Chavez said. "The female left prior to our arrival, but was located a short time later by Shawnee officers in their city."

Major Jason Brunner of the Shawnee Police Department did not answer any questions about Shawnee's involvement in the incident, saying that officers assisted Lenexa and all inquiries should be directed to them.

Shortly after midnight, Shawnee's K-9 located the female suspect in the backyard of the home.




She was taken into police custody and then transported to an area hospital by Johnson County Med-Act for treatment of a minor injury.

Johnson County court records show the suspect, Patricia Hernandez, has been charged with felony aggravated assault, felony obstruction of legal process, and misdemeanor violation of a protection order. She's being held on a $2,500 bond, her next court appearance is scheduled for April 9.

Motorcyclist critically injured in fiery crash with SUV

A man on a motorcycle was transported to an area hospital early Sunday evening after he was hit by an SUV while riding his motorcycle in Lenexa.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics were called to the intersection of 95th Street and Monrovia Street about 5:15 p.m.

Lenexa Police were first to arrive on the scene and reported that the motorcycle was off the road and on fire. The rider was still on the road. An officer applied a tourniquet to stop the injured motorcyclist's leg from bleeding.

The motorcyclist, only identified as a 19-year-old man, was transported by Johnson County Med-Act to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center in critical condition. His injuries included a broken leg and a partially amputated ankle.

A witness, who didn't want to be identified, tells Operation 100 News that the motorcycle was traveling eastbound on 95th Street and the SUV was southbound on Monrovia.

The witness was unsure which vehicle had the green light, but said that the motorcycle was driving fast just before the crash. He says that the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.

The driver and passenger of the SUV did not report any injuries.

The crash was recorded by a traffic camera at the intersection.

Police directed traffic through the intersection as the crash was investigated. Eastbound 95th Street was taken down to only one through lane during that time and both directions of Monrovia, south of the intersection were closed. The intersection reopened to normal traffic just before 8:30 p.m.

One person injured in early morning crash in Shawnee

A man in his 30s was transported to an area trauma center after he was found lying on the ground approximately 20 feet from his crashed SUV on Shawnee Mission Parkway just west of Interstate 435 in Shawnee.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics were called to the scene about 1:50 Sunday morning. Firefighters arrived to find one vehicle with substantial front end damage on the right shoulder of westbound Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Recorded radio traffic indicates the man, who was believed to be heavily intoxicated, told first responders that he was not the driver.

Police and firefighters diverted all westbound traffic onto northbound Interstate 435 as they searched for a second person who had possibly been ejected in the crash. The man later told paramedics that he was alone in the SUV.

Radio traffic indicated paramedics believed the injured man might have been ejected from the SUV. His injuries were described as serious but not immediately life-threatening. Johnson County Med-Act transported him to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

The Lenexa Police Department assisted with searches of the area of the possibility of another ejected person with a drone and with a K-9. No one was located during those searches.

The westbound lanes of Shawnee Mission Parkway reopened shortly after 3:30 a.m.

Police are investigating the crash as being DUI related. No other details were immediately available.

Officers were called to the business at 16675 Midland Drive just before 11 p.m.

Recorded radio traffic indicates a man entered the business and threatened the clerk with an ax handle. The clerk reportedly gave the suspect cash and cigarettes.

A K-9 from the Lenexa Police Department was called in to assist with a search of the area. The suspect was not located during the K-9 search.

Radio traffic described the suspect as a white male with red hair. He was last seen wearing a blue ‘Colorado’ hoodie. The clerk told officers that he left the business on foot and was walking east.

Man stabbed, woman arrested following domestic disturbance

Lenexa Police are investigating a domestic disturbance which ended with a man being stabbed and a woman under arrest.

It happened in The Crossing Apartments, 12300 block of West 85th Terrace around 7 p.m. Saturday.

Officers were dispatched on reports of a man who had been stabbed multiple times. The suspect, only described as an Asian woman, reportedly stabbed the man before running to a nearby apartment.

Recorded radio traffic indicates officers arrived to find the man with stab wounds outside of the building. As officers were searching for the alleged suspect, firefighters were dispatched to the same building for a possible building fire.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez of the Lenexa Police Department confirms the incident was a domestic disturbance.

"Adult male sustained non-life threatening injuries," Chavez said in an emailed response to questions. "Female currently in custody."

Johnson County Med-Act transported a man in his early 40s to an area trauma center with serious, but non-life threatening stab wounds to his hands and one to his leg.

Firefighters from Lenexa, Overland Park, and Shawnee responded for the reported fire. Those firefighters were allowed to disregard the call shortly after they arrived on the scene.

Olathe man arrested after brief car chase in Lenexa

Lenexa Police arrested a 54-year-old Olathe man after he allegedly failed to yield for a traffic stop on Interstate 35 just after 9:30 Thursday evening.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez of the Lenexa Police Department says an officer tried to stop the vehicle in the 8700 block of southbound Interstate 35 for a lighting violation.

"The vehicle got off on the 95th Street ramp, where our officers disregarded the traffic stop," Chavez said.

Officers tailed the vehicle, a 2002 Chevrolet Impala, as it drove west on 95th Street to Pflumm Road, where the driver turned north. The suspect turned east on Santa Fe Trail Drive, and then south on Quivira Road.

"At times, officers were able to see the direction the vehicle was headed and we successfully deployed stop sticks in the 9400 block of Quivira," Chavez said.

After hitting the stop sticks, the driver continued to westbound 95th Street and back to northbound Pflumm Road. He drove through several parking lots near 87th Street and Pflumm then returned to southbound Pflumm Road.

"We were also receiving calls from citizens about the location of the vehicle," Chavez said. "The vehicle was eventually located abandoned in the 9400 block of Pflumm."

A witness who was driving behind the suspect vehicle gave officers a description of the suspect and told them he ran east along 94th Street.

Officers quickly set a perimeter to contain the suspect and deployed a K-9 to search for him.

"We received a call from a citizen in the 13400 block of West 94th Street who said that an unknown male was sitting on his front porch," Chavez said. "Our officers contacted this male and he was eventually arrested for numerous warrants."

Kilgore is awaiting his first appearance in court on new charges related to the pursuit. His pending charge shows to be a felony for reckless fleeing from a law enforcement officer. He's also being held on charges from a 2017 obstruction case in which he failed to appear for his court date.

Two women injured, man arrested after trying to elude police

Lenexa Police arrested an Olathe man after he attempted to avoid a traffic stop shortly after 10 p.m. Monday.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez says an officer attempted to stop a car near 95th Street and Quivira Road because the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

"The car fled into the Oak Park Mall parking lot, where two adult passengers jumped from the moving car, one of which was partially dragged by the car," Chavez said.

Recorded radio traffic indicates the officer stopped to check on the women who jumped out of the fleeing car and temporarily lost sight of the suspect vehicle.

The car was found in the parking lot near the Macy's Furniture and Mattress Gallery, 11201 West 95th Street, but the driver was no longer with the car.

Officers began saturating the area and prepared to search with police dogs. Witnesses at the nearby Houlihan's, 11851 West 95th Street, pointed out the suspects hiding spot just outside the building. The suspect was arrested just outside the Houlihan's building.

Johnson County Med-Act and the Overland Park Fire Department responded to check on both of the women who jumped from the moving car. Officer Chavez says both were treated for minor injuries.

The suspect, only identified as a 33-year-old Olathe man, has yet to be formally charged. Court records show pending charges of felony aggravated battery, felony fleeing a law enforcement officer-reckless, felony obstruction of the legal process, and misdemeanor driving while suspended. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.

The same suspect has an extensive criminal record in Johnson County with previous cases dating back to 2003 with charges including domestic violence, theft, and felony possession of methamphetamine.

OP police seeking information on suspect vehicle from Oak Park Mall shots fired

Overland Park police say they no longer need to identify the two persons of interest from Wednesday's shots fired incident outside Oak Park Mall.

Police are asking for information about a possible suspect vehicle, only described as a "dark SUV crossover."

Captain Brian Houlahan of the Overland Park Police Department says officers responded to the mall, 11121 West 95th Street, about 8:30 p.m. after receiving a report of possible gunshots inside the building.

"Multiple police departments from Johnson County, Kansas responded to the area to assist," Capt. Houlahan said. "Officers found no evidence of any shooting or injured individuals inside the mall."

Officers from Lenexa, Shawnee, Olathe, Leawood, and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office were among those who responded to assist with the call.

While investigating officers learned that an unoccupied vehicle in the northeast parking lot of the mall had been hit multiple times by gunfire. The northeast parking lot is near the food court.

"There have been no individuals coming forward to advise they were injured as a result of this shooting," Capt. Houlahan said.

Shortly before midnight, Overland Park Police Department Public Information Officer John Lacy advised that officers had cleared the area of the incident.

15-year-old girl recovering after Sunday evening shooting

Lenexa police say a shooting victim who was transported to the hospital from an address in their city was reportedly shot in Shawnee.

Around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Lenexa officers were dispatched to respond with Johnson County Med-Act for a female who had been shot.

Deputy Police Chief Dawn Layman of the Lenexa Police Department says the shooting is believed to have happened in Shawnee.

"We notified Shawnee, and Shawnee PD responded to the Overland Park Regional and contacted the victim," Dep. Chief Layman told Operation 100 News on Monday morning.

Sources have confirmed to Operation 100 News that the shooting victim is a 15-year-old girl who was shot once in the chest. She was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Several Shawnee officers were dispatched to check the area of the Cottonwood Park Apartments, near 63rd Street and Widmer Road. It is unclear if those officers located a scene.

The Shawnee Police Department's online activity log includes a case number classified as "assault/battery" in the 6300 block of Cottonwood Drive. The description of the case number only states, "information on a juvenile."

Major Sam Larson of the Shawnee Police Department says they don't have many details about the incident.

"It was reported to us that the incident occurred in the 6300 block of Cottonwood earlier in the evening last night," Maj. Larson said. "We have no suspect information at this time, and we did not have any calls of shots fired in the area."

According to Larson, the victim was treated and released from the hospital.

"Our detectives in our Investigations Bureau continue to investigate the case," Maj. Larson said.

Elementary student reports possible stranger danger

A Lenexa elementary student reported a possible case of stranger danger to school officials Monday morning.

Mill Creek Elementary School Principal Michelle Lord sent a message to parents on Monday informing them of the reported incident. Mill Creek Elementary is located in the 13900 block of West 79th Street.

"A student on the way to school this morning was approached by an individual in a gray Jeep," Principal Lord said in the message to parents. "The driver waved at the student to get in the vehicle."

Principal Lord said that the student did not engage with the driver, continued on his way to school, and told an adult what happened.

Lenexa Police say the driver of the Jeep was possibly waving to let the student know that he could cross the street since this occurred at an intersection.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez says police are handling this as a suspicious activity incident and they do not consider the driver of the Jeep to be a suspect.

"For the same reason, we are not issuing any kind of 'attempt to locate' on the vehicle," Ofc. Chavez said. "The Shawnee Mission School District Police was also made aware of this incident."

Principal Lord asks that students and parents remain vigilant and report any person who may be acting in a strange manner.

"We need to encourage students to remember: 'if you see something, says something'," Principal Lord said in her message.

Officer Chavez adds, "Children should be reminded of the three basic rules with strangers: don't talk to them, don't take anything from them, don't go with them."

Two killed, seven others injured in crash with tree

Lenexa Police are investigating after an attempted traffic stop led to a crash that killed two teenagers and left seven others injured.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez of the Lenexa Police department says, "at approximately 4:35 a.m. a Lenexa patrol officer observed a vehicle traveling in the 15700 block of West 87th Street with its lights off."

"The officer lost sight of the vehicle and turned off his emergency equipment, disregarding the traffic stop," Chavez said. "A short time later the officer came upon the vehicle which was wrecked into a tree at 80th Street and Maurer."

Recorded scanner audio indicates that the officer attempted to make a traffic stop a white Mitsubishi Galant near 85th Street and Maurer Road. The officer can be heard telling his dispatcher that the vehicle is "blacked out," or driving without any lights. The officer reported the Galant was driving "about 80" miles per hour.

Seconds later a supervisor can be heard asking the officer for an update on speeds, the officer replies, "I'm at 50, they're going about 90." 

The supervisor then tells the officer to "disregard." The officer found the car crashed with multiple people trapped inside less than a minute later.

The Lenexa Fire Department and Johnson County Med-Act responded to the scene and reported nine people were inside the car. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, three were transported to area hospitals in critical condition and four others had minor injuries.

Police have identified the deceased as Isaiah Stoble, 15, and Angelito X. Espinosa, 13, both of Kansas City, Kansas. Chavez says the other occupants of the vehicle are all between the ages of 13 and 15. All are believed to be from Kansas City, Kansas.

The Lenexa Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances and cause of Sunday's crash.

Shawnee Police arrested two men who allegedly fired shots at an undercover Lenexa officer late Wednesday.

The suspects, 29-year-old Ruben Rodriguez and 21-year-old Samir Arrendondoaragon of Kansas City, Kansas have both appeared in Johnson County Court on charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Bond was set for both suspects at $500,000.

In a news release, Major Dan Tennis of the Shawnee Police Department says Lenexa officers were conducting surveillance in Lenexa using an unmarked vehicle just before 10pm.

"While conducting surveillance, the alleged suspect vehicle left the location being watched and was followed by the [Lenexa] police," Tennis said in the release.

The suspect vehicle led the undercover Lenexa officer into Shawnee.

As the officer was trying to get a marked police vehicle to intercept the suspect vehicle Tennis says, "the two people in the suspect vehicle began shooting at the officer."

"They shot multiple rounds at the officer as they were driving," Tennis said.

"Several police officers responded to assist and the suspect vehicle was disabled with a tire deflation device in the city of Shawnee," Captain Diana Mendoza of the Lenexa Police Department said in a news release.


The suspects abandoned their vehicle in the back driveway of a home on the southwest corner of 73rd Street and Charles Street.

Operation 100 News spoke to Shawnee Police Captain Mark Hein at the 73rd Street and Charles Street scene. Captain Hein said the suspects were both taken into custody south of their vehicle, after officers from Shawnee and Lenexa set up a "strong perimeter."

Captain Hein also said that he was told the temporary license plate on the suspect vehicle was stolen, but the vehicle was not stolen.

Crime Scene Technicians from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office Crime Lab processed at least three scenes in Shawnee. Traffic cones marked evidence on the ramp from Maurer Road to eastbound Shawnee Mission Parkway, where Captain Hein says the first shots were fired.

Another traffic cone marked evidence on Lackman Road near 74th Street, just outside of the Maple Ridge of Wedgewood neighborhood.

Crime Scene Technicians also collected the suspect vehicle and Lenexa's undercover vehicle. Both vehicles were towed away from the scene for further processing at the Johnson County Crime Lab in Olathe.

Captain Mendoza says, "at around 2:00am the Lenexa Police Department served a search warrant at the original address. No other suspects were found."

Lenexa Police have not released any additional information regarding the nature of their investigation.

No one was injured during the incident.

Juveniles arrested following burglary and pursuit in western Shawnee

Shawnee Police arrested three juveniles after a western Shawnee resident reported someone was opening her garage door late Wednesday night.

According to Major Dan Tennis, officers were dispatched to the 24200 block of West 67th Terrace on a possible aggravated residential burglary in progress at 11:44 p.m..

A woman called 911 to report that she heard her garage door open, she then closed it only to hear the door open again. The woman and her husband told police that they didn't see anyone. The couple reported a garage door opener had been stolen from a vehicle parked in their driveway.

At 11:53 a Shawnee dispatcher requested a third officer to respond to the area of the call. A police supervisor added himself to the call seconds later.

Due to encryption of police radios, it's unclear where or when officers located the suspects and the suspect car. Police also started their pursuit on an encrypted radio channel, before moving to a regional pursuit channel minutes later.

Radio traffic from a Lenexa Police dispatcher, at 11:54, stated that Shawnee officers were in pursuit of a black passenger car eastbound on 70th near Belmont and that it is related to an aggravated burglary. At least two Lenexa officers, including one K-9, said they would start towards the area of Shawnee's pursuit.

By 11:55 Shawnee radios had been moved to a regional pursuit channel and the pursuit was eastbound on 71st Street from Gleason Road. The suspects drove to the dead-end of 71st Street, east of Hedge Lane Terrace, where they made a U-turn and sped off back to the west.

A Shawnee officer reported speeds of 60 miles-per-hour on westbound 71st Street near Apache Drive. The black 2015 Kia Forte turned north onto Mize Road with speeds around 50 miles-per-hour.

The suspect driver followed Mize Road to 63rd Street, where the road turns east, with speeds around 30. The suspects turned north on Clare Road and slowed to 10 miles-per-hour before coming to a stop, just south of 61st Terrace.

Major Tennis says, "while turning a corner, the vehicle struck a curb or rock which flattened one of the front tires. The vehicle was not able to drive anymore and stopped."

According to radio traffic, the pursuing officer held the car at gunpoint until additional officers could arrive to assist him.

"Three juveniles were taken into custody without incident," Tennis said. "Both males were 17 and the female was 16."

Operation 100 News has independently confirmed two male juveniles and one female juvenile were taken into custody. All three were questioned by police at Shawnee Police headquarters, before being transported to the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center in Olathe around 3 a.m..

Tennis says, "the case is being sent to the Johnson County District Attorney's office this morning for review and charging."

Attempts to contact police immediately following the pursuit were not answered.

This is the second occasion [that Operation 100 is aware of] Shawnee Police have attempted to keep a high-speed pursuit on an encrypted radio channel. An October 2014 pursuit, which started with a Shawnee Police K-9 vehicle being rammed in a QuikTrip parking lot, was heavily encrypted. Shawnee officers led the nearly 40 mile pursuit, which ended 30 minutes later near Blue Springs, Missouri. Previous Operation 100 News report.

VIDEO- Man found dead in car after officers hear a gunshot

Lenexa Police are investigating after a man died from a gunshot wound early Thursday morning.

The incident occurred on the south side of 87th Street Parkway and Long Street, just across the street from Lenexa Police Department headquarters.

A black 2013 Ford Focus with Missouri license plates was stopped just south of the intersection with the driver's door open.

At 1:19 a.m. an officer called out "shots fired" over the radio.

Master Police Officer Dan Friesen says, "a two-officer unit on patrol saw a black Ford Focus sitting in the middle of the road on Long Street, just south of 87th Street Parkway. When officers pulled up behind the vehicle they heard a single gunshot."

Johnson County Med-Act responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Police have identified the him as a 31-year-old from Kansas City, Missouri. Police have released his name, however Operation 100 News is choosing not to release it.

Friesen says, "there were no shots fired by officers and they had not contacted the man previously."

MPO Friesen has confirmed to Operation 100 News that prior to officers arriving, the Ford Focus had collided with a median at 87th Street Parkway and Rosehill Road. The vehicle ran over a median sign and left behind several large pieces of bumper and a fender well.

Police had the eastbound lanes of 87th Street Parkway closed at Rosehill Road for about 90 minutes.

Operation 100 News was at this scene for approximately an hour this morning, attempting to speak with officers at the scene and was told that no one was available to share any information.

Friesen says "typically officers on scene do not release information to media in order to avoid conflicting information being given or providing information that could compromise an investigation."

Had Operation 100 News simply been informed that this was a suspected suicide, there would not have been any reason to proceed with a report.

Operation 100 News does not typically report suicides, however as this one occurred just across the street from the Lenexa Police headquarters, in front of officers, and along busy 87th Street Parkway it is being reported.

Holiday weekend fireworks enforcement

With fireworks being illegal in most of Johnson County, Operation 100 News reached out to several agencies after the July 4th weekend to see how many complaints were received.

Major Dan Tennis with the Shawnee Police Department says they received 68 fireworks complaints. Officers issued five citations and "about half a barrel" of fireworks were confiscated. Tennis says the barrel is estimated to be a 20-30 gallon container.

Shawnee has recently been researching legalization of some fireworks. Here's a report regarding that debate from my reporting partners at the Shawnee Dispatch.

Officer Gary Mason with the Overland Park Police Department says they received 130 calls for service regarding fireworks. Officers issued 31 citations and 26 of the citations also included fireworks being confiscated.

Deputy Claire Young with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office says they received approximately 238 fireworks calls between Friday evening and Sunday evening. Deputy Young says she does not have a number of citations issued or confiscations. The Sheriff's Office handles call taking and dispatching for a large part of Johnson County. Agencies dispatched by the Sheriff's Office include the cities of De Soto, Edgerton, Fairway, Gardner, Lake Quivira, Merriam, Olathe, Mission, Roeland Park, Spring Hill, Westwood, as well as Johnson County Park Police and Johnson County Sheriff's Office in unincorporated areas of the county.

Lawrence, Lenexa, and Olathe police have not responded to the request for information.

None of the responding agencies reported any injuries related to the use of fireworks.
