Two women injured, man arrested after trying to elude police

Lenexa Police arrested an Olathe man after he attempted to avoid a traffic stop shortly after 10 p.m. Monday.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez says an officer attempted to stop a car near 95th Street and Quivira Road because the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

"The car fled into the Oak Park Mall parking lot, where two adult passengers jumped from the moving car, one of which was partially dragged by the car," Chavez said.

Recorded radio traffic indicates the officer stopped to check on the women who jumped out of the fleeing car and temporarily lost sight of the suspect vehicle.

The car was found in the parking lot near the Macy's Furniture and Mattress Gallery, 11201 West 95th Street, but the driver was no longer with the car.

Officers began saturating the area and prepared to search with police dogs. Witnesses at the nearby Houlihan's, 11851 West 95th Street, pointed out the suspects hiding spot just outside the building. The suspect was arrested just outside the Houlihan's building.

Johnson County Med-Act and the Overland Park Fire Department responded to check on both of the women who jumped from the moving car. Officer Chavez says both were treated for minor injuries.

The suspect, only identified as a 33-year-old Olathe man, has yet to be formally charged. Court records show pending charges of felony aggravated battery, felony fleeing a law enforcement officer-reckless, felony obstruction of the legal process, and misdemeanor driving while suspended. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.

The same suspect has an extensive criminal record in Johnson County with previous cases dating back to 2003 with charges including domestic violence, theft, and felony possession of methamphetamine.

Police from across Johnson County converge on Mission Hills after shots fired

Prairie Village Police say they were called to 3000 block of West 69th Street at 3:33 Saturday morning on a report of a mental disturbance.

A Mission Police Officer armed with a rifle watches the area of Tomahawk Road and Mission Road early Saturday morning as officers search for a man with a gun.

Officers arrived and contacted a man who was armed with a handgun.

"The subject fired shots and fled the area on foot," Prairie Village Police Captain Byron Roberson said in a news release. "A perimeter was set up with the assistance of a number of outside agencies."

Officers from across Johnson County responded to the calls for assistance from the Prairie Village officers who had contacted the man.

Those officers surrounded the north side of the Indian Hills Golf Course and the Country Club at 6847 Tomahawk Road. Several employees were evacuated from the building and moved to a nearby parking lot, just outside of the search area.

Recorded radio traffic from the officers in the area indicated that officers continued to hear sporadic gunfire through the first two hours that they were searching for the man.

The Olathe Police Department sent their MRAP "rescue vehicle" to assist with the search. MRAP is short for Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected.

The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department sent an armored vehicle with a small team of officers to assist, as did the Olathe and Overland Park Police Departments.
Lenexa Police and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office both sent officers with drones to search from above.

Police from as far away as Olathe sent officers to assist in surrounding the search area.

About 6:30 a.m., Prairie Village officers spotted the man going door-to-door along 69th Street, near where officers initially contacted him.

Police say he was then taken into custody without incident.

"The subject was transported to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation and pending charges through the Johnson County District Attorney's Office," Capt. Roberson said in the release.

Police searching for missing woman

Roeland Park Police are asking for the public's assistance in locating a missing woman.

Police say Sandra K. Herron-Burns, 43, was last seen on Monday at the Price Chopper, 4950 Roe Boulevard. Her cell phone and other belongings were found inside her apartment. Police were called to her apartment at The Boulevard Apartments after she did not show up for an appointment with Johnson County Mental Health.

She is described as a white female, 5ft 4in tall, 150lbs, with long black hair. She is schizophrenic with paranoid tendencies and PTSD. She does not have access to a vehicle and is believed to be on foot.

The Kansas Highway Patrol brought in a helicopter with FLIR, or Forward Looking Infared, to assist in searching nearby wooded areas for any signs of body heat. The helicopter search, early Wednesday morning, did not turn up any new leads for police.

Foul play is not suspected in her disappearance.

Body found in Kansas river believed to be swimmer who disappeared early Sunday

A fisherman in Kansas City, Kansas reported finding a body in the Kansas river around 12:40 p.m. Monday.

The discovery was made near the Kansas Highway 32 bridge, just east of S. 59th Lane.

Kansas City, Kansas Police believe this is the man who disappeared in the river while swimming early Sunday morning in Edwardsville. (Original report below.) 

Police have not released the man's name, pending positive identification and family notification.

Firefighters from three area departments searched the Kansas river after a person reportedly fell in the water early Sunday.

A witness told firefighters that the man disappeared in the river near the jetty, which is just east of Interstate 435.

Kansas City, Kansas Fire dispatchers said they received the call shortly after 12:45 a.m. and dispatched Edwardsville Fire to begin a search of the area.

Edwardsville firefighters requested assistance from Kansas City, Kansas Fire with boats and Kansas City, Missouri Police with their helicopter. The Shawnee Fire Department was called to assist about 45 minutes later with additional boats.

Kansas City, Kansas Fire launched one airboat and had two bass boats that they were unable to launch due to shallow water. Shawnee Fire attempted to launch a shallow water boat from the Edwardsville boat ramp. They were also unsuccessful in their attempt to launch.

The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department helicopter was over the river, for about an hour, with a search light and heat sensing cameras.

The missing man is said to be 44-years old. He was last seen wearing dark colored shorts and no shirt. Firefighters say that he was fishing with a group when he fell in and did not resurface.

Firefighters walked along both banks and did not report finding anything. Kansas City, Kansas Fire also had a crew downstream watching the river for any signs of the missing person.

Leavenworth County offered to send boats to assist in the search.

Authorities believe the man was swimming when he disappeared in the water.

Crews called off the search around 2:30 a.m. Sunday due to unsafe water conditions. They returned later Sunday morning and continued searching off and on most of the day.

SILVER ALERT CANCELED | Mark D. Vassershteyn has been located

Overland Park Police say Mr. Vassershteyn has been located. He is safe and back at home. No other details are being released.

Overland Park Police are asking for the public's assistance in locating a missing man with dementia.

Police say 64-year-old, Mark D. Vassershteyn was last seen around 8 p.m., in the area of W. 147th Terrace and Hardy Street. This intersection is between U.S. Highway 69 to the east and Antioch Road to the west.

Mr. Vassershteyn is a white male, approximately 5 feet 7 inches, 135-140lbs, with short grey hair and glasses. He is possibly wearing layered clothing. Police say he walks with a forward lean and only speaks Russian. He does not have access to a vehicle, and should be on foot in the area.

Missing child FOUND following extensive search

Lenexa Police have confirmed that the boy and his dog were found safe in a nearby apartment just before 8 a.m. Police say the boy left his mother's apartment sometime before midnight and walked to family friend's apartment down several doors in the same building. The resident at that apartment attempted to contact the child's mother but, was unable to make contact with her at that time.

The family friend, the boy and his dog spent the morning in the apartment down the hall. Police began knocking on doors in the building around 5 a.m., at that time the friend says she did not hear Police at the door. When officers went door-to-door a second time before 8 a.m., the friend answered and learned that there was a frantic search in progress for the boy.

Police confirmed that the boy was safe and was not in need of any medical care before returning him to his mother.

Lenexa Police are searching for a missing boy this morning after he disappeared from his home in the Oak Park Village apartments sometime overnight. The child was reported missing around 4:45 a.m., according to Police.

Police confirm the child is a three and a half year old white male. He is believed to be wearing a one piece pajama from the Disney movie 'Cars' and is not believed to have a coat. The family dog, described as a tan and white Yorkshire Terrier and Schnauzer mix, is also missing from the apartment. Lenexa Police say the boy has let himself out of the apartment in the past.

The boy was last seen at his home, an apartment in the complex southwest of the intersection of 95th Street and Quivira Road. The actual address is in the 9500 block of Monrovia.

While also unconfirmed, it is believed the boy has not been seen since around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Lenexa firefighters are using thermal imaging cameras to assist in the search. Officers from the cities of Overland Park, Olathe, Merriam and the Kansas Highway Patrol are also assisting with the search.

Officers at the scene have also requested the Kansas Highway Patrol's helicopter to respond from Topeka as soon as it is available at daybreak this morning. A command post is being established in a nearby shopping center parking lot.

Anyone with information is urged to call 911 immediately.

Merriam convenience store robbed

Merriam Police are investigation after two men robbed the gas station near 67th Street and Interstate 35. The robbery was dispatched to officers at 4:08 a.m. at 9500 W. 67th Street.

The suspects are described as Hispanic males, both said to be in their late teen's or early 20's. Both men were wearing hooded sweatshirts and armed with handguns. The men reportedly fled the area in a silver passenger car westbound on 67th Street from the scene.

A witness told Police that the suspect vehicle ran the railroad crossing gates just as a train was approaching.

Shawnee Police received a report that a man with a handgun entered the QuikTrip store at 6637 Nieman Road. The man reportedly walked into the store and immediately ran back outside. An officer arrived at that scene to learn that a customer was the only witness, and that customer had left the area.

Around 4:20, a Shawnee officer reported a silver car traveling at a high rate of speed near W. 69th Street and Switzer Road. The officer lost sight of the vehicle and then spotted it crashed into a parked vehicle in a driveway in the 10100 block of W. 69th Terrace in Merriam. That officer reported a Hispanic male running southbound from the vehicle. Unconfirmed reports indicated officers have located a handgun inside the now crashed vehicle.

The crashed vehicle that one man was seen running from is also reported to have been the suspect vehicle in a Hit-and-Run accident in Kansas City, Kansas earlier in the night.

Shawnee, Merriam and Overland Park Police established a perimeter in the area and searched for the suspect with the assistance of the Shawnee Police Department's K-9 unit. Officers concluded their area search at 5:53 a.m.. Both suspects remain at large.

At 6:10, Merriam Police reported that they have located the cash drawer near the intersection of W 67th Street and Farley Street, about one-quarter of a mile west of the robbery scene.

Several early morning burglaries in Johnson County

Leawood Apple Store burglarized with help of a vehicle

Leawood Police are investigating a burglary at the Apple Store early this morning.

Police say they responded on a burglary alarm at 2:40 a.m.. Arriving officers found a vehicle backed into the front of the Apple Store at 4529 W. 119th Street #283. Authorities suspect the vehicle to be stolen.

Police say no arrests have been made and the vehicle has been towed from the scene.

Lenexa business burglarized

Lenexa Police were are also investigating a burglary this morning.

Police say they responded on a burglary alarm around 3 a.m. in the 11400 block of Strang Line Road. Arriving officers found that front glass on the building was damaged enough for someone to have possibly made entry.

Officers established a perimeter in the area before clearing the interior of the building.

A K-9 unit from the Olathe Police Department also responded to assist in the search. No one was found inside the business or in the surrounding area. No arrests have been made.

Prairie Village auto burglaries

Prairie Village Police were called to the area of 78th Street and Roe Avenue around 3:45 a.m..

Police located several vehicles which were burglarized within a four block area.

Officers requested assistance from the Shawnee Police Department's K-9 unit and one additional patrol unit from the Fairway Police Department. Officers determined that there was no loss worth deploying the K-9 in a search for.

Police conducted a vehicle stop near 75th Street and Delmar Street which was suspected to be related to the auto burglaries. Officers checked three juvenile occupants and eventually released them to their parents. Police did not make any arrests.

Manhunt underway in Olathe neighborhood

Update: A statement released this afternoon by Olathe Police says that at 9:36 a.m., Police were called to an address in the 1300 block of E 120th Street on a report of an Aggravated Burglary in progress. The homeowner told arriving officers that a man confronted him at the front door of the address. That man was armed with a handgun and entered the residence. At that time the homeowner and two small children fled the house through a backdoor. The residents fled to a nearby business to call Police.

Officers quickly established a perimeter throughout the neighborhood and later deployed a robot inside the residence. No one was found to be inside the home and no injuries were reported.

Police say the suspect remains at large this afternoon. The man is described as a heavy set white male, standing approximately 6ft to 6ft 2in tall, with dark hair and dark rimmed glasses. He was last seen wearing black overalls and black shoes.

The case remains under investigation and Olathe Police ask anyone with information to contact them at 913-971-6950 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477 (TIPS).

Olathe Police confirm that they are dealing with a situation near 120th Street and Ridgeview Road. The situation began when a man with a gun entered a residence around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers say an adult and two children were inside when the unknown man broke in. The adult and both children were able to flee from the address safely.

A source familiar with the incident confirms to Operation 100 News that Olathe Fire Department's Bomb Squad responded to provide the Police with a robot to clear the house. Officials have since cleared the house without locating anyone inside.

Police have locked down a large area and continue searching for the suspect. No description of the man was immediately available.

Johnson County Med-Act is also standing by near the scene. As of this report, no injuries have been reported.

Stabbing reported outside of JoCo fast food restaurant

Merriam Police, Fire and Johnson County Med-Act were called to the Wendy's at 10006 W. 75th Street around 2 a.m. Friday after a male told employees that he had been stabbed. Police say the victim and his attacker know each other and the incident likely occurred a short distance away.

Police confirmed a "small puncture wound" to the man's lower left abdomen and after confirming that the suspect had fled the scene, requested that Med-Act respond. Johnson County Med-Act reported that the man's injury was not suspected to be immediately life threatening. The victim was transported to an area hospital for further treatment.

Police conducted an extensive search of a nearby wooded area, which has previously been the location of a homeless camp. Officers from Shawnee and a K-9 unit from Lenexa assisted in the search, which wrapped up around 3:30 a.m.. Police know the suspect's name and continue to be on the lookout for him this morning.

Officers say they believe the two men had an argument at which point the victim was stabbed near the stomach. After being stabbed the victim fled on foot to the Wendy's where he alerted employees to call for Police.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 40's with a beard. He was last seen wearing all black clothing and a black stocking cap. Anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts or about the incident itself is asked to call Merriam Police.

Burglary reported at Lenexa High School

Lenexa Police are investigating after, at least, two adult males reportedly broke into St. James Academy, 24505 Prairie Star Parkway. St. James Academy is a Catholic High School in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas.

A witness reported chasing two males, both wearing white t-shirts inside the building, just after 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. Police arrived and immediately established a perimeter in the area. A K-9 is searching the area for the suspects, who are believed to be on foot in the area. A Lenexa Police Officer reported spotting two males in the wooded area near the school. A passing motorist also reported spotting two subjects matching the description, just inside the wooded area.

Police say there are possibly three suspects involved and they are investigating whether or not a vehicle located in the school's parking lot is involved or not.

As of 6:50 a.m., Police have requested a second K-9 unit to respond to relieve the first K-9. The search began as Police arrived just before 5:40 a.m..

Earlier, Police checked on the availability of helicopters from both the Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. Both of those helicopters were unavailable to assist in the search.

Olathe Police and Troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol are also in the area assisting on securing the perimeter around the area, including at least one Trooper on K-10 highway.

Police broke down their perimeter just after 7:50 a.m.. Officers remain at the school, processing the scene and several officers continue to rove through the area looking for the suspects.

There was no immediate word of any damage or loss of property. Police say classes at St. James Academy ended last week.
