Police identify the Lenexa man hit and killed by vehicle

Lenexa police are investigating after a man in his 70s was hit and killed by a vehicle on Pflumm Road Tuesday evening.

The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. at 75th Terrace and Pflumm Road, just south of the Shawnee and Lenexa city limits.

Police say, Ronald G. Roberts, 77, of Lenexa, was walking westbound across Pflumm Road at 75th Terrace when he was hit by a southbound vehicle.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez says arriving officers found two citizens were attempting lifesaving measures on Roberts.

Johnson County Med-Act pronounced Roberts dead at the scene.

Green spraypaint on Pflumm Road marks where the vehicle stopped after hitting the man.

The driver of the vehicle stopped and is cooperating with police during their investigation.

Firefighters from Shawnee and Lenexa responded, along with Johnson County Med-Act.

Lenexa police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash with the assistance of the Shawnee Police Department.

Elementary student reports possible stranger danger

A Lenexa elementary student reported a possible case of stranger danger to school officials Monday morning.

Mill Creek Elementary School Principal Michelle Lord sent a message to parents on Monday informing them of the reported incident. Mill Creek Elementary is located in the 13900 block of West 79th Street.

"A student on the way to school this morning was approached by an individual in a gray Jeep," Principal Lord said in the message to parents. "The driver waved at the student to get in the vehicle."

Principal Lord said that the student did not engage with the driver, continued on his way to school, and told an adult what happened.

Lenexa Police say the driver of the Jeep was possibly waving to let the student know that he could cross the street since this occurred at an intersection.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez says police are handling this as a suspicious activity incident and they do not consider the driver of the Jeep to be a suspect.

"For the same reason, we are not issuing any kind of 'attempt to locate' on the vehicle," Ofc. Chavez said. "The Shawnee Mission School District Police was also made aware of this incident."

Principal Lord asks that students and parents remain vigilant and report any person who may be acting in a strange manner.

"We need to encourage students to remember: 'if you see something, says something'," Principal Lord said in her message.

Officer Chavez adds, "Children should be reminded of the three basic rules with strangers: don't talk to them, don't take anything from them, don't go with them."

Shawnee Police investigating Monday armed robbery

Shawnee Police say they're investigating after three masked suspects robbed a business near 75th Street and Nieman Road on Monday evening.

Major Sam Larson says officers were called to the Azteca Imports, 11226 West 75th Street, around 8 p.m.

Larson says three suspects entered the store, two of them were armed with handguns, and robbed the business.

"We conducted a K-9 track of the area for the suspects with our K-9 unit," Maj. Larson said. "Lenexa PD assisted us with their drone and searched the area as well."

No suspects were located during the search.

"Our Investigations Bureau is working the case and will be reviewing evidence and surveillance cameras in the area," Maj. Larson said.

No suspect descriptions have been released.

Two killed, seven others injured in crash with tree

Lenexa Police are investigating after an attempted traffic stop led to a crash that killed two teenagers and left seven others injured.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez of the Lenexa Police department says, "at approximately 4:35 a.m. a Lenexa patrol officer observed a vehicle traveling in the 15700 block of West 87th Street with its lights off."

"The officer lost sight of the vehicle and turned off his emergency equipment, disregarding the traffic stop," Chavez said. "A short time later the officer came upon the vehicle which was wrecked into a tree at 80th Street and Maurer."

Recorded scanner audio indicates that the officer attempted to make a traffic stop a white Mitsubishi Galant near 85th Street and Maurer Road. The officer can be heard telling his dispatcher that the vehicle is "blacked out," or driving without any lights. The officer reported the Galant was driving "about 80" miles per hour.

Seconds later a supervisor can be heard asking the officer for an update on speeds, the officer replies, "I'm at 50, they're going about 90." 

The supervisor then tells the officer to "disregard." The officer found the car crashed with multiple people trapped inside less than a minute later.

The Lenexa Fire Department and Johnson County Med-Act responded to the scene and reported nine people were inside the car. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, three were transported to area hospitals in critical condition and four others had minor injuries.

Police have identified the deceased as Isaiah Stoble, 15, and Angelito X. Espinosa, 13, both of Kansas City, Kansas. Chavez says the other occupants of the vehicle are all between the ages of 13 and 15. All are believed to be from Kansas City, Kansas.

The Lenexa Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances and cause of Sunday's crash.

"This investigation involves the initial responding patrol officers, as well as detectives and traffic crash investigators," Chavez says. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased, as well as to all others involved in this tragic situation."

Olathe Police are investigating after a man was shot to death inside a bar late Wednesday.

Sergeant Bryan Hill says police were called to the Double Nickel, 189 S. Rogers Road, at 11:39 p.m. on reports of shots fired.

"Officers arrived and found a 38-year-old man who was suffering a gunshot wound to the chest," Sgt. Hill said in a news briefing near the scene. "Despite their efforts, the person passed away here at the Double Nickel."

Police have identified the shooting victim as 38-year-old William Ray Schutkesting of Olathe, Kansas.

Witnesses told police that the suspect ran out of a back door after the shooting. An Olathe Police K-9 tracked down the 28-year-old male suspect across Interstate 35 from the bar, where he was taken into custody.

Police have identified the suspect as 28-year-old Michael Chinn of Augusta, Kansas. Chinn is being held at the New Century Adult Detention Center near Gardner, where he is awaiting his first court appearance.

Sgt. Hill says the shooting occurred inside the Double Nickel Bar & Grill and officers continue to interview witnesses. Officers are still investigating whether or not the victim knew the suspect.

Officers from the Lenexa Police Department, along with Deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office assisted Olathe Police with holding a perimeter during the suspect search.

Lenexa K-9 Team awarded at national competition

Lenexa Police Department's K-9 Team participated in the National Police Canine Association seminars and competition in October, held in Fort Myers, Florida.

Officer Jim Harris and K-9 Speedy were awarded first place in the patrol category. Officer Tim King and K-9 Wrecker earned fifth place in the narcotics competition, Wrecker joined the Lenexa Police Department only four months ago.

Corporal Ryan Sumner and K-9 Diesel were awarded fifth place in the patrol category. Cpl. Sumner was also elected as National Police Canine Association representative for our region, which covers several states.

"Ryan will be responsible for all the memberships in the region and will be a part of the decisions made at the national level,"said Sergeant Greg Bogart. "The top dog trainers in the country are involved in the selection of the representatives. They all respect Ryan and his abilities, and this is a great honor for him, the K-9 Unit and Lenexa."
