Troopers identify two men killed in K-10 crossover accident

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after two people were killed in a head-on accident on Kansas Highway 10 in De Soto.

The accident was reported shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday in the eastbound lanes of K-10, east of Kill Creek Road.

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies arrived at the scene to report two vehicles with heavy damage.

Johnson County Med-Act reported two people dead at the scene.

Both eastbound lanes of the highway were closed, with traffic being diverted to Kill Creek Road. All lanes reopened to traffic at 6:15 a.m..

Troopers say, 45-year-old, Johnnie Royce Jackson of Kansas City, Missouri, was driving his 2007 Chevrolet Silverado westbound in the eastbound lanes of K-10 after crossing the grassy center median. The wrong way truck then crashed nearly head-on into an eastbound 2013 Toyota Avalon. The Toyota was being driven by, 20-year-old, Robert Anthony Zevenbergen of Kansas City, Kansas. 

An accident report says Jackson was not wearing a seat-belt and was ejected from the truck. Zevenbergen was properly restrained and had to be extricated from his car.

Trooper Howard Dickinson says the crash was not survivable because of the force of two vehicles traveling at 70 mph and crashing into each other.


The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate if alcohol played a role in the accident's cause.

Johnson County home damaged by early morning fire

Shortly after 1 a.m., firefighters from three area departments were called to a house fire near Kansas Highway 10 and Evening Star Road in Lexington Township, between De Soto and Eudora.

The 911 caller reported a fire on the front side of the home and was evacuating residents at 39905 W. 103rd Street.

A Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy arrived at the scene at 1:11 a.m. to confirm that there was active fire on the home's exterior.

Firefighters from Northwest Consolidated Fire District reported a working fire on their approach to the scene. Once on scene crews reported a single story manufactured home with flames on the front side.

No one was home when the fire was reported. Firefighters did rescue a dog from the structure.

Crews worked for just under 10 minutes to knock the fire down. The fire was reported to be under control at 1:27 a.m. and said to be out at 1:47 a.m..

Firefighters from the Eudora Fire Department and Olathe Fire Department also assisted with the incident and coverage of the NWCFD area.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A damage estimate is not yet available. No injuries were reported.

Accidental shooting reported in De Soto

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a shooting this morning.

Shortly after midnight, Deputies were called to an address in the 34000 block of Orchard Drive in De Soto on reports of an accidental shooting. Deputies found an 18-year-old man with a single gunshot wound to his genital area.

The man was reportedly asleep on a couch when the gun that a man on a different level of the home was handling accidentally discharged. A single round is said to have been fired through the floor and then "grazing" the genital area of the sleeping man.

Johnson County Med-Act and Northwest Consolidated Fire District crews reported the man's injuries to be non-life threatening. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Deputies continue to investigate the incident. No other details were immediately available.

Several animals killed in De Soto house fire

Northwest Consolidated Fire District crews are battling a house fire in De Soto this morning. The structure is a single wide trailer home at 8820 Waverly Road.

Crews were called to the scene around 2:10, Wednesday morning after a resident reported a fire under the home.

A Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy arrived to report that the residents were making their way out of the structure and smoke was visible.

Firefighters arrived to report a working fire on the rear side of the structure. Crews began an interior attack but, were forced to evacuate after conditions inside deteriorated.

A Safety Officer reported that there was fire visibly "blowing through" three or four windows on the rear side and the fire appeared to extend the entire length of the structure. Crews began defensive operations from the exterior of the home.

Residents reported that their pets were believed to still be inside the structure.

The Lenexa Fire Department has one fire crew and a Battalion Chief at the scene assisting with fighting the fire. One Olathe Fire Department crew is standing by at Northwest Consolidated Fire District Station 1 for coverage of the area.

The fire was declared to be under control at 3:20 a.m.. An official cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Authorities say the Red Cross will be assisting the three adult residents. The structure has been declared a total loss. Several animals died in the fire including; a bird, dog and a snake. A cat remains unaccounted for. The homeowner is said to be a veterinarian.

Three people injured in crossover crash on K-10

The Kansas Highway Patrol has confirmed that this morning's accident was a crossover.

Troopers say at approximately 7 a.m., a 2005 Ford pickup truck was traveling in the right lane of eastbound K-10. The second vehicle, a 2005 Hyundai Elantra was traveling in the left lane next to the Ford truck.

The driver of the Ford truck attempted to change lanes to the left, causing the driver of the Hyundai to make an avoidance maneuver to the left. The Ford's driver lost control of the vehicle and crossed the center median. The Hyundai's driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle and came to a stop in the center median.

A third vehicle, a 2005 Scion XB, was traveling westbound on K-10 and swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid the out of control Ford truck. The Scion broadsided the Ford truck in the driver's door. Both vehicles came to rest off of the right shoulder of the westbound lanes of K-10.

Troopers have identified the driver of the Ford truck as, 62-year-old, Martin Bruce of Baldwin City. Bruce was wearing his seat belt when the accident occurred. He was transported to an area hospital.

The driver of the Hyundai Elantra has been identified as, Lawrence resident, Rachel Debes, 25. She was not injured in the incident and was wearing a seat belt.

Investigators say there were three people in the Scion. Those people have been identified as Olathe residents, Luis Elias-Sanchez, 29; Juan Moreno-Lopez, 22; and Carlos Torres-Oliva, 19. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol's accident report, Elias-Sanchez was not injured in the accident and was wearing a seat belt. Moreno-Lopez and Torres-Oliva were both injured in the crash and, according to the report, it is unknown if they were wearing seat belts. Both were transported to an area hospital. 

Troopers did not provide any updates on the conditions of the injured people.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a serious accident on K-10 in De Soto.

The accident was reported to authorities at 7:05 a.m. and is in the westbound lanes of K-10 just east of Kill Creek Road.

Initial reports indicated the crash began in the eastbound lanes of K-10 with a car and truck colliding. The truck then reportedly crossed the center median and collided with a westbound vehicle. This information has not been confirmed by authorities as of this report.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office say three vehicles, two with heavy damage, were involved in the accident.

Northwest Consolidated Fire District crews responded to the scene with Johnson County Med-Act. Reports from the scene indicated; one person with critical injuries, two others are said to have serious injuries and a fourth person with minor injuries is refusing treatment.

Dispatchers tell Operation 100 News that the accident scene has been cleared and traffic is returning to normal.

Firefighters make quick work of JoCo house fire

Firefighters made quick work of a De Soto house fire.

Dispatchers say the call was dispatched just before 6:30 a.m. when they received a call from a resident.

Firefighters from Northwest Consolidated Fire District arrived on the scene to report nothing showing from the single story home at 8155 Wea Street.

Crews located a working fire in the home's attic at 6:38 a.m. and reported that fire to be under control at 6:48 a.m..

One crew from the Lenexa Fire Department responded to the scene to assist with the incident.

The American Red Cross has been requested to assist three adults and four children who were displaced by the fire.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Iraq War Veteran from De Soto, Kansas found safe in Illinois

UPDATED: Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies say Matthew Flowers has been located in Illinois. Authorities in Collinsville, Illinois, east of St. Louis, located him hitchhiking and said he was "headed towards Florida." He was last seen in De Soto on Tuesday. Johnson County Deputies say he left voluntarily and was not taken into custody in Illinois.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance in locating a missing Veteran.

Deputies say 28-year-old, Matthew Scott Flowers, of De Soto has been missing from his home for two days.

He is described as a white male, standing 5' 10" tall and weighing approximately 200 pounds, with a shaved head

and blue eyes. Flowers has a tattoo on his left forearm which reads "Madden" and a Chinese symbol on his right arm. He was last seen wearing brown cowboy boots, blue jeans.

Flowers is an Iraq War Veteran who suffered an injury during his deployment. Deputies say he requires medication, which he is not believed to have with him. When he is off of his medication, he may display "erratic or aggressive behavior."

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Matthew Scott Flowers is asked to call the Johnson County Sheriff's Office at 913-782-0720.

Unincorporated JoCo Burn Ban issued

The Board of Johnson County Commissioners has issued a burn ban covering the unincorporated areas of Johnson County.

The news release cites continued excessively dry conditions. The release also states that the ban is effective immediately and will remain in effect indefinitely, until fire conditions improve.

Burn Permits previously issued have been suspended and new Permits will not be issued until after the ban is lifted.

The Board's decision adds to the burn ban which the Northwest Consolidated Fire District put into effect on October 3rd.

More construction coming to K-10

The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced that on Monday, October 31st, a contractor will begin work on an emergency bridge repair project along K-10. Locations effected by the repair work include the westbound K-10 bridges over Lexington Avenue, Kill Creek and Mill Creek, in Johnson County. The work  will occur during daylight hours, Monday through Friday.

The project will begin at 7 a.m. on Monday, October 31st and westbound K-10 will be reduced to one lane, 24/7, round the clock, from Ridgeview Road to Woodland Avenue (approximately one mile), in Lenexa and from the Kill Creek bridge to Lexington Avenue (approximately one and a half miles) in De Soto. Concrete barriers will be in place and a 55 mph speed limit posted throughout the project work zone. A 12-foot lane width restriction will also be in place, as well as no shoulder availability over bridges throughout the length of the project.

Advance signage will be in place to alert drivers to the lane closures. Drivers through the area should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes as possible.

PCI Roads will be the primary contractor for the $91,094 bridge repair project. The project is scheduled to be fully compelted by mid-November 2011, weather permitting. This project is funded by T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the Kansas Legislature in May 2010. KDOT reminds all motorists to be alert, obey warning signs and "Give 'Em a Brak!" when approaching and driving through project work zones.
