Three detained after high-speed chase into Johnson County

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office tried to stop a vehicle which allegedly committed several traffic violations shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday.

The driver of the silver Nissan Versa refused to stop for officers and accelerated to nearly 90 miles per hour while southbound East 2200 Road, south of Eudora.

Radio traffic indicates deputies pursued the vehicle south to North One Road, or the Franklin County border, where the suspect vehicle turned east.

The suspect vehicle continued to flee from the deputy north on East 2300 Road while accelerating to 100mph. The car then turned east on U.S. 56 Highway into southwest Johnson County.

Once in Johnson County, radio traffic indicates officers were able to spin the suspect vehicle, bringing it to a stop on U.S. 56 Highway north of 191st Street. Three people were detained at that location and transported back to Douglas County. The chase ended about 1:20 a.m.

Police officers from Eudora and Baldwin City assisted with the pursuit.

Four people displaced by early-morning fire

A fire in a Eudora home displaced three adults and one child early Monday morning.

Eudora police and firefighters were dispatched to the two-story house at 918 Church Street at 12:56 a.m. A resident of the home called 911 reporting a fire in a bedroom.

Police officers were on the scene quickly and ran into the home after learning that one of the residents was still inside. The officers were able to get the resident to go outside.

Firefighters arrived to report light smoke visible from one side of the house.

Radio traffic from firefighters indicated they found a mattress on fire in an upstairs bedroom.

Firefighters worked for about 15 minutes to extinguish the fire.

Medics checked on one resident and two police officers for possible smoke inhalation. All refused transport to a hospital.

The Red Cross has been called to assist the displaced residents.

Fire investigators determined that there were no smoke detectors on the floor where the fire started.

The Eudora City Fire Department posted on their Facebook page reminding followers that free smoke detectors are available by calling 785-542-3653 for an appointment.

One person hospitalized following reported stabbing in Lawrence

Police are investigating after two people were found with lacerations in Eudora early Saturday.

Shortly before 3 a.m., Eudora Police and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews were dispatched to an address in the 1500 block of Savage Street, on a reported cutting.

Eudora Police reported that the incident allegedly occurred in Lawrence and the victims were then transported to the Eudora address.

A medic unit transported one person to a Kansas City area trauma center with serious injuries, said to include a laceration to the neck. Two medic units responded on the call, only one transported a victim from the scene.

Lawrence Police continue to investigate and at least one officer is at the hospital trying to get more information from the victim.

It remains unclear where, or when, the incident occurred.

No other details were immediately available.

Lawrence woman arrested after allegedly stabbing a Eudora man

Douglas County authorities are investigating after a man was stabbed late Thursday.

At 11:35 p.m.,  Eudora Police and Fire Medical crews were called to the Grandview Mobile Home Park, 510 E. 10th Street in Eudora. There officers located a man with a chest laceration. He claimed that an ex-girlfriend had cut him inside her Lawrence home and he drove himself to Eudora.

Lawrence Police were sent to the Brookwood Mobile Home Park, 1908 E. 19th Street, where they were able to contact the alleged suspect.

Medics reported the victim's injury to be critical and he was rushed to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. The victim has only been described as a, 44-year-old, man with a laceration to the left side of his chest.

Operation 100's news partners at the Lawrence Journal-World reports that police arrested Virginia June Goff, 43, at 2:44 a.m. Friday at the mobile home on E. 19th Street.

Lawrence Police Department Sgt. Trent McKinley tells the Journal-World the incident was described to them [police] as a domestic violence.

Douglas County law enforcement was involved in a pursuit early Saturday morning.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Kirk Folks tells the Lawrence Journal-World that a vehicle was seen speeding in the area of Club Magic, 804 W. 24th Street, around 1:18 a.m.. Officers stopped the vehicle and attempted to speak with the driver who then sped off, striking the officer with a passenger side mirror.

Lawrence Police initiated the pursuit of the gray Mercury Grand Marquis in east Lawrence around 1:40 a.m.. Officers quickly lost sight of the car on eastbound Kansas Highway 10.

Eudora Police were waiting at the Church Street bridge over K-10 and picked up the pursuit as the vehicle passed.

That officer pursued the vehicle into Johnson County where he was joined by a Douglas County Deputy and Johnson County Deputies.

The Eudora officer reported "speeds are 100 plus," as the vehicle approached De Soto.

The chase continued eastbound on K-10 towards Lenexa, where officers were able to put out spike strips in front of the vehicle and then join the pursuit.

Officers from multiple agencies continued to chase the vehicle as K-10 merged with Interstate 435. The chase continued eastbound into Overland Park. Officers continued to lay out spike strips in front of the suspect car.

The spike strips had flattened both passenger's side tires as the vehicle approached Leawood.

Leawood officers were able to spike the driver's side of the vehicle.

The vehicle continued across the state line into Kansas City, Missouri where their officers joined the chase and Kansas agencies backed off.

Kansas City Police brought in their helicopter and pursued the vehicle northbound on U.S. 71 Highway and eventually to the area of E. 63rd Street and S. Benton Avenue, where the vehicle came to a stop. All three occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody without further incident.

During the pursuit at least one Douglas County deputy had to drop out of the chase after he struck spike strips with his patrol vehicle on K-10 in Johnson County. The patrol vehicle was towed back to Lawrence. Spike strips were also hit by at least one passing car and a tractor trailer, while on I-435.

No injuries were reported.

Eudora home heavily damaged by fire

Firefighters from at least three area departments were called to respond on a report of a structure fire in Eudora.

The call was dispatched around 11:40 p.m. at 2218 Quail Court. The address is on the south side of Kansas Highway 10, just east of Eudora High School.

Law Enforcement arrived on the scene to report the east side of the structure was heavily involved in fire. Fire crews arrived to report heavy flames visible from the south and east sides of the two story home.

The residents of the home told emergency crews that everyone was out of the home safely.



As of 12:10 a.m., firefighters report the roof of the home is nearly fully engulfed. Crews remain inside the home battling the flames from the second story.

Just before 1 a.m., a Fire Safety Officer reported a partial roof collapse. Incident command made radio contact with each firefighter team on the inside of the structure. All crews were clear of the collapse area and continue to put water on the fire.

The fire was reported to be "under control" at 1:07 a.m.. Dispatchers report that crews were on scene for one hour 20 minutes before the fire was brought under control.

Neighbors on one side of the home were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries have been reported.

Johnson County home damaged by early morning fire

Shortly after 1 a.m., firefighters from three area departments were called to a house fire near Kansas Highway 10 and Evening Star Road in Lexington Township, between De Soto and Eudora.

The 911 caller reported a fire on the front side of the home and was evacuating residents at 39905 W. 103rd Street.

A Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy arrived at the scene at 1:11 a.m. to confirm that there was active fire on the home's exterior.

Firefighters from Northwest Consolidated Fire District reported a working fire on their approach to the scene. Once on scene crews reported a single story manufactured home with flames on the front side.

No one was home when the fire was reported. Firefighters did rescue a dog from the structure.

Crews worked for just under 10 minutes to knock the fire down. The fire was reported to be under control at 1:27 a.m. and said to be out at 1:47 a.m..

Firefighters from the Eudora Fire Department and Olathe Fire Department also assisted with the incident and coverage of the NWCFD area.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A damage estimate is not yet available. No injuries were reported.

Large brush fire in west Lawrence

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical was dispatched to a grass fire in the 6000 block of Bob Billings Parkway and George Williams Way at 10:20 a.m.. A media release says that due to extremely dry conditions, wind gusts and an abundance of dry vegetation, the fire began to spread rapidly to the northeast potentially affecting several homes along Palisades Street and Langston Hughes Elementary School. The incident was upgraded to a structure fire with mutual aid requests from numerous neighboring departments.

Mutual aid was received from; Eudora Township, Wakarusa Township, Lecompton Township, Willow Springs Township, and Kanwaka Township.

In addition to the Douglas County departments, mutual aid was also requested from several Johnson County departments which included; Olathe, Lenexa, Overland Park, and Shawnee Fire Departments. Johnson County Med-Act also assisted with emergency medical coverage.

Numerous homes in the 6200 block of Palisades street were evacuated until the fire could be contained. All residents were allowed back into their homes by 12:30 p.m..

No injuries were reported to Fire Department personnel and the American Red Cross provided rehydration assistance to multiple responding agencies.

Investigators say the fire was sparked after a squirrel came into contact with overhead electrical power lines, causing a spark which ignited the vegetation beneath the line.

Officials say there is not a dollar loss associated with the vegetation burned, however minor damages are being assessed of the houses that were adjacent to the burned area.

Severe weather strikes Douglas & Johnson counties Sunday

This morning, the National Weather Service says two tornadoes briefly touched down in Olathe on Sunday evening.

The first touchdown was reported at 6:10 p.m., near Kansas 7 Highway (K-7) and Santa Fe Street by a Trained Weather Spotter.

About 10 minutes later, another touchdown was, reported at 6:22 p.m., near Interstate 35 and United States Highway 169 (US-169) by Olathe Fire Department personnel. See the YouTube video at the bottom of this post for audio of this report.

Weather Spotters and Law Enforcement also reported rotation and lowering in the area of K-7 south of 119th Street and to the southwest of the K-7 and K-10 interchange. This lowering was not reported to have made contact with the ground.

No injuries or damage were reported directly related to the brief tornado touchdowns.

Severe Weather Reports to the National Weather Service

Hail was also reported just outside of Eudora and in Lawrence. Hail reports in Douglas County varied from Dime to Half Dollar in size. Minor damage was reported to a few vehicles in Douglas County as a result of the hail.

Several hundred were without power for times in both Douglas and Johnson Counties. Westar Energy reported nearly 600 Douglas County customers without power around 6:30 p.m..

Here is a rare glimpse behind the scenes of what was going on here at Operation 100 News as the second touchdown was being reported in Olathe. This recording includes audio from four scanners, with audio from Law Enforcement, Fire Department, and Weather Spotters. Some of the audio is difficult to understand as scanner volumes varied and the camera was closer to the Law Enforcement scanner than it was to the Spotter and Fire Department scanners.

National Take Back Initiative - Saturday, October 29, 2011

This Saturday, October 29, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. is the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) along with state and local law enforcement agencies across the country will be hosting the event to collect unwanted and unused prescription drugs.

Residents are invited to drop off unused, unneeded or expired prescription medications at any of the listed locations, no questions asked. Tablets, capsules, and all other solid dosage forms will be collected. Intravenous solutions, injectable medications, and syringes will not be accepted.

According to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs. Each day more thank 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America.

Douglas County K-10 Resurfacing Project set to begin

The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced that the previously scheduled and then delayed K-10 resurfacing project will begin on Monday, October 3rd at 9 a.m. This same project was originally slated to begin on September 21st but was delayed indefinately. KDOT cites "scheduling conflicts" as the reason for the delayed start date.

The project  will cover an 8.5-mile stretch of K-10 from the east city limits of Lawrence to the Douglas/Johnson County Line. Crews will work round the clock with the majority of the work completed during the overnight hours, seven days a week. No work will take place during peak travel times on K-10, between 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m., Monday through Friday. There will also be no work completed on all University of Kansas home football game days.

KDOT says that eastbound and westbound K-10 will be reduced to one lane during work hours on the project. Work will also take place on adjacent interchange ramps, only one set of ramps will close at a time. Traffic will be directed through the work zone using signage. Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes as possible. A 55 MPH speed limit will be posted along with a 14-foot lane width restriction throughout the project work zone during working hours.

Project work will include: pavement repair and resurfacing on all mainline lanes, pavement of shoulders (10-foot outside shoulders and 6-foot inside/median shoulders when completed) and installation of edgeline rumble strips on both inside (median) and outside shoulders. KDOT says the project will smooth the road and fill surface defects that can shorten pavement life.

Hamm Construction of Perry, Kansas is the primary contractor on the $4.3 million resurfacing project. The project is scheduled to be completed by early November 2011, weather permitting. Funding is being provided by T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the Kansas Legislature in May 2010.

KDOT: Construction on K-10 suspended until further notice

The Kansas Department of Transportation announced on Tuesday that work on K-10 from the east city limits of Lawrence to the Douglas/Johnson county line has been suspended until further notice.

KDOT says that the public will be notified at least two days prior to the work beginning. This project is still listed to be completed by November. No word given on the cause for the delay.

K-10 resurfacing project scheduled to begin

KDOT is reminding drivers that they will begin a resurfacing project on an 8.5-mile stretch of K-10 from the east city limits of Lawrence to the Douglas/Johnson County line.



No work will occur during peak travel times of 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday or on University of Kansas home football game days, according to a press release.

The work is scheduled to begin Monday, September 12th and crews will begin the project at the east city limits of Lawrence. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in both the eastbound and westbound lanes during project work hours. There will also be a 14-foot lane width restriction.

KDOT advises drivers to be aware of the reduced speed limit of 55 mph through work zones and delays are expected. Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible.

The project work includes: pavement repair and resurfacing on all mainline lanes, pavement of shoulders (10-foot outside shoulders and 6-foot inside/median shoulders when completed) and installation of "edgeline" rumble strips on both shoulders.

Eudora cement mixer accident on K-10, August 25th

According to a preliminary accident report filed by the Kansas Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. in the westbound lanes of K-10 at mile marker 10.8 in Eudora.

A Tonganoxie man, 44 year-old, Richard Vandruff was driving a 2008 Mack cement mixer which blew a  tire causing Vandruff to lose control. The report states that the truck swerved onto the north shoulder then veered across lanes into the median and then rolled onto it's side while trying to veer back onto the roadway. The vehicle came to rest on its passenger side.

Eastbound and westbound lanes of K-10 were closed while emergency crews worked the scene and traffic was forced to find an alternate route, many traveling through Eudora.

The cement mixer driven by Mr. Vandruff, was the only vehicle involved and he was the lone occupant of the truck. Eudora along with Lawrence Fire Department personnel worked for approximately 45 minutes to free Vandruff from the cab of the truck.

A LifeFlight Eagle Helicopter, out of the Kansas City area, transported Vandruff to a Kansas City area trauma center. At the time of transport, his injuries were described as serious. No further updates of his condition have been made available at the time of this report.

The Kansas Highway Patrol's Commercial Vehicle Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the accident.

All lanes of eastbound and westbound K-10 were reopened just before 10:15 p.m. after being closed for nearly six hours.

Lawrence Police plan DUI check lane Friday, August 26th

Lawrence Police have announced that they will be conducting a DUI check lane within in the city on Friday evening.

The Lawrence Police Department along with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office both taking part in the special enforcement effort which began August 19th and continues until Labor Day, September 5th. Law Enforcement Officers are on the lookout for anyone driving impaired, speeding and seat belt/child restraint violations.

The Kansas Department of Transportation is providing funding for overtime to allow agencies to increase patrols during the special effort.

Kansas Highway Patrol joins other Law Enforcement Agencies to reduce Impaired Driving

Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. campaign will bring more troopers to the road

Beginning last week, the Kansas Highway Patrol and many other law enforcement agencies began participation in the Kansas Department of Transportation's (KDOT) Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), which runs from August 18 through Labor Day, September 5. Troopers will be enforcing Kansas' impaired driving, occupant protection, and other laws.


The KHP is among more than 130 law enforcement agencies across the state who will participate in the Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. STEP campaign. In an effort to drastically reduce the number of preventable deaths and injuries that occur when alcohol is mixed with driving a vehicle or riding a motorcycle, troopers across the state will be participating in saturation patrols and check lanes.


It is illegal in Kansas to drive or attempt to operate a motor vehicle with a blood or breath alcohol concentration of .08 or higher. Penalties for impaired driving include loss of driving privileges, fines, court costs, and possible jail time. The more severe consequences of drinking and driving include injuring or killing yourself, an occupant of your vehicle, or the occupants of another vehicle.
The Patrol suggests taking the following precautions:

• If you plan to drive, do not drink.
• If you plan to drink, designate a non-drinking driver and give that person your keys.
• Never ride with a driver who has been drinking.
• Take a list of phone numbers with you for cabs or friends to call for a sober ride home.
• If possible, plan to spend the night at the event.
• If you are throwing a party, provide non-alcoholic alternatives, and never let guests drive drunk.
• Report impaired drivers to your local law enforcement agency.
• Always buckle up and properly secure children in their safety seats.

August 6th K-10 Fatality Accident Update

The Kansas Highway Patrol has released the names of the two drivers that were involved in Saturday morning's deadly accident on K-10 in Lenexa. The accident occurred on K-10 between Interstate 435 and Renner Road or at the 29.5 milemarker, four tenths of a mile west of I-435.

Troopers say 23-year-old Ezequiel Gallardo-Moncallo of Kansas City, Kansas was driving his 2001 Mazda 626 eastbound in the westbound lanes of K-10 when his vehicle struck a pickup truck head-on, killing Mr. Gallardo-Moncallo and pinning him inside of the vehicle. According to the accident report, he was wearing his seat belt and required extrication from the vehicle.

The truck was driven by 28-year-old Brian Ingalls of Olathe, Kansas. Ingalls was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from his 2002 Ford F-150. His injuries were determined to be in critical by Johnson County Med-Act and he was transported to Overland Park Regional where at last check he remains. Mr. Ingalls condition was not being released as of Sunday morning.

Why Mr. Gallardo-Moncallo was driving into oncoming traffic has not been confirmed by Kansas Highway Patrol investigators. As initially reported here Saturday morning, a reliable source close to the investigation tells Operation 100 News that it appears one of the drivers involved in the accident was "in the middle of typing a text message when the accident occurred." That same source was not willing to comment on whether it was the wrong-way driver who was texting.

The accident remains under further investigation pending toxicology results.

One killed in Head-On Crash on K-10 in Lenexa

Lenexa Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol are investigating after a head-on crash kills one and critically injures another just before 2 a.m. Saturday morning.

The crash occurred in the westbound lanes of the highway just east of Renner Road. Initial reports indicate that one vehicle was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when the accident occurred.

The name of the victim who has died has not been released and is pending notification to next of kin.

A reliable source close to the investigation tells Operation 100 News that it appears one of the drivers involved in the accident was "in the middle of typing a text message when the accident occurred." That source was not willing to comment on whether it was the wrong-way driver who was texting or how that driver began traveling on the wrong side of the highway.

The deceased driver did need to be extricated from the vehicle after the accident. The other driver was ejected from the vehicle according to initial reports
