Six unlocked vehicles burglarized in western Shawnee

Shawnee police say six unlocked vehicles were burglarized early Monday morning in a western Shawnee neighborhood.

Major Sam Larson of the Shawnee Police Department says officers were called around 1:30 a.m. to a home in the 5500 block of Lakeridge Drive, in the Symphony at Monticello neighborhood, on a report of a possible auto burglary. The neighborhood is located near the intersection of Johnson Drive and Monticello Road.

"A citizen called reporting suspicious activity and thought someone was trying to break into a vehicle at their home," Maj. Larson said.

Officers searched the area with a K-9 but were unable to locate the suspect.

A resident of the neighborhood called the police again around 3:30 a.m. after seeing the suspect walking in the area. A responding officer spotted the suspect near 56th Street and Millridge Street.

"The male suspect, an 18-year-old Kansas City, Kansas resident, fled from officers on foot," Maj. Larson said. "He was taken into custody a short time later."

Johnson County Sheriff's Office booking logs show the suspect was arrested at 3:54 a.m. and then booked into the Adult Detention Center in Olathe at 7:55 a.m.

Maj. Larson say officers have already taken six case numbers which are believed to be associated with this suspect.

Police say all six of the vehicles burglarized were left unlocked.

"The vast majority of the auto burglaries we investigate are to unlocked vehicles, help to greatly reduce your chance of being a theft victim by locking your cars," Maj. Larson said. "We ask that all residents take the time to remove valuables from vehicles and to ensure that their vehicles are locked."

Maj. Larson adds that it's always a good idea to double check that your garage door is closed and car doors are locked before going to bed.

Police are asking anyone who believes their vehicle may have been burglarized or entered over the weekend to call them, 913-631-2150, to report the crime.

The suspect remains in the custody of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and is awaiting formal charges. Operation 100 News will update this report to identify the alleged suspect once he is charged on Tuesday afternoon.

Four arrested after early-morning burglaries

Lawrence police arrested four people following several burglaries early Thursday.

Police were called to an address in the 3700 block of Stetson Drive shortly before 12:30 Thursday morning for a residential burglary in progress. The residents of the address was asleep inside the home when the suspects attempted to get in. One of the residents went downstairs to investigate the sounds and saw the silhouette of someone standing outside the kitchen window and called police, Lawrence Police Sgt. Trent McKinley tells my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World.

An arriving officer was involved in a brief foot chase with one of the suspects, who was found trying to hide in a vehicle. A second person was arrested just minutes later near the same vehicle.

While investigating officers found evidence suggesting that the suspects had damaged window screens and broken a basement window, all in attempt to get inside the home.

During a search of the vehicle, officers found items that belonged to the home next door. Police say the resident of that home awoke to her dog barking, when she went to investigate she saw a man standing in her living room. She screamed and the man ran off.

Officers searching the suspect vehicle also located a laptop that belonged to an address in the 300 block of Sharon Drive. Officers responded to that address and found obvious signs that the home had been broken into.

A garage door opener, belonging to a home in the 300 block of Stockade was also found in the suspect's vehicle. Officers say that opener was taken from a vehicle that was burglarized in front of the address. Police are still investigating whether or not that opener was used to enter the home.

At 3:45 a.m., police received a report of someone attempting to enter a home through a side door in the 3800 block of Sierra Court. The resident of that address armed himself with a handgun, called police and the suspect fled according to Sgt. McKinley.

A short time after, officers spotted a man attempting to break into a vehicle in the 3800 block of Overland Drive. The man was quickly arrested.

The Journal-World reports that the fourth suspect was located just before 7 a.m. near the Hy-Vee in the 4000 block of West Sixth Street. He attempted to flee, McKinley said, and was arrested after a lengthy foot chase.

The suspects have been identified as Tyler Snipes, 18, of Lawrence, Michael Dale Eller, 20, of LaCynge, and Stephan Thompson, 21, and Stafan Davis, 21, both of Parker.

Eight vehicles burglarized, one set on fire in JoCo neighborhood

Overland Park Police continue to investigate after numerous vehicles were burglarized in a neighborhood early Sunday morning, one was set on fire by the burglars.

Police were called to an address just west of 145th Terrace and Metcalf Avenue on reports of a car fire in the driveway around 2:35 a.m.. Overland Park firefighters arrived about three minutes later to find the car engulfed in flames.

As police were on the scene of the of the fire call, a resident just down the street found a vehicle in their driveway had been broken into and some items were missing.

Police found several other vehicles in the same neighborhood had been burglarized and called Leawood Police for assistance with a K-9 search.

Officers from Overland Park and Leawood searched the neighborhood for nearly two hours. No suspects were located.

Overland Park Police public information officer Gary Mason says, "we have eight victims now and one vehicle was set on fire. We believe it was involved with the burglaries, although not usually something these burglars would do to draw attention to themselves."

Police also remind everyone to remove valuables from their vehicles overnight and lock parked vehicles.

"They make it too easy" says Officer Mason.

Shotgun wielding victim chases burglary suspect

Officers from at least four departments searched for an auto burglary suspect this morning in Merriam.

Police were called to the 8300 block of W. 60th Street around 3:45 a.m.. A caller reported that her husband was chasing a man who was seen inside of a parked vehicle. While Merriam officers were responding on the call, Dispatchers reported that the husband was armed with a gun and chasing the suspect away. Dispatchers reported hearing shots being fired over the phone line.

Merriam Police requested assistance from surrounding agencies including; Mission, Overland Park, and Shawnee. Responding officers established a perimeter around the area to contain the suspect.

The victim of the auto burglary, armed with a shotgun, was located about a block away from his residence. Officers secured the weapon and began interviewing the victim regarding the incident.

The suspect was described as a white male with a medium to heavy build, he is said to have a "scruffy" beard and was wearing a dark red flannel coat and dark pants. He was last seen running west towards Antioch Road.

Shawnee Police had their K-9 unit at the scene and searched the area for the suspect. The area search was concluded at 4:50 a.m., with the suspect remaining at large.

No injuries have been reported and Police continue to investigate.
