Police release surveillance images of suspects from Saturday morning armed robbery

The Overland Park Police Department has released surveillance images of the two suspects from Saturday's armed robbery outside of a Shawnee Mission Parkway QuikTrip.

Overland Park Police were called to the QuikTrip at 7400 Shawnee Mission Parkway about 3:45 Saturday morning to investigate an armed robbery.

Recorded radio traffic indicates the driver of a taxi told police that two men, one armed with a handgun, robbed him and ran away. Both men were last seen running north from the QuikTrip parking lot.

Officers from Fairway, Merriam, Mission, and Shawnee responded to assist in holding a perimeter around the area for a K-9 search. Overland Park officers also used a drone to assist with the search.

While searching, officers were informed that one of the victim's credit cards was already being used at the QuikTrip at 4700 Lamar Avenue in Mission.

Officers in Overland Park concluded their search about 4:30 a.m.

One killed, another injured in late-evening crash on Metcalf

One man is dead and another is recovering at an area hospital after a three-vehicle crash near 77th Street and Metcalf Avenue on Tuesday evening.

Overland Park Police say the crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. in the 7700 block of Metcalf Avenue.

In an initial email to the media, Overland Park Police Captain Tom Fredrickson says one person was killed and another was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries.

A later news release from Overland Park Police Department Traffic Safety Unit Sergeant Keith Hruska says the motorcyclist died at the scene and none of the other drivers suffered serious injuries.

At the scene, an SUV with significant front end damage came to rest facing south in the northbound lanes and a sportbike came to rest near a utility pole off the east side of the road.

Johnson County Med-Act ambulance transported the elderly male driver of the SUV to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

All lanes of Metcalf Avenue were closed between 75th Street and 79th Street as the crash was investigated. Metcalf was reopened about 1:45 Wednesday morning.

The Overland Park Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is handling the crash investigation. At least one Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper was on scene assisting with traffic control.

"At this time, the investigation is in the preliminary phase and the cause of the crash is still being determined," Sgt. Hruska said in the release.

The name of the motorcyclist has not been released.

Burglary suspect rams Shawnee police vehicle, leads officers on 40-mile chase

Shawnee Police are investigating after a K-9 officer's vehicle was backed into by an aggravated burglary suspect early Tuesday.

At 2:08 a.m. the officer reported that his patrol vehicle had been "rammed" in the parking lot of the QuikTrip at 20605 Shawnee Mission Parkway.


Sgt. Tom Lynch said in a news release that the officer, "observed a white Ford Edge that has been reported used in several aggravated burglaries and criminal use of financial cards in Shawnee and other cities in Johnson County."

According to Sgt. Lynch, "the officer notified Shawnee dispatch he would be checking on a suspicious vehicle, and the white male driver of the Ford Edge backed up and rammed the patrol car, while the officer was inside the vehicle."

The driver of the Ford Edge fled the parking lot eastbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway from Woodland Road at speeds well over the posted speed limit. The suspect turned onto southbound Interstate 435 where he accelerated to 110 miles per hour in his attempt to elude officers.

Two Shawnee police officers continued to pursue the vehicle across the state line into Kansas City, Missouri.

Shawnee officers reported "damp roads" as they passed Holmes Road and continued to the east side of the Interstate 435 loop and northbound towards Interstate 70.

The suspect led officers onto eastbound Interstate 70, passing the Truman Sports complex at around 100 miles per hour.

Kansas City, Missouri officers were able to catch up and join the pursuit east of Blue Ridge Cutoff.

Shawnee officers continued in pursuit as the suspect took the ramp from eastbound I-70 to Noland Road and then immediately re-entered eastbound I-70, to avoid spike strips laid by Independence, Missouri officers.

Other Independence officers were able to get spike strips down in front of the suspect vehicle as they reached the western city limits of Blue Springs, Missouri.

With the vehicle's tires deflating, the chase slowed to around 20 miles per hour as they approached Northeast Adams Dairy Parkway. The vehicle came to a stop just to the east of Adams Dairy Parkway and the driver was taken into custody without further incident.

The pursuit covered about 40 miles, in just over 30 minutes.

Sgt. Lynch says the pursuit was for aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer.

"Neither the suspect, the officers involved, nor any civilians were injured in this incident," Sgt. Lynch said in the news release.

Shawnee officers were assisted by several other agencies including: Kansas City, Missouri Police, Jackson County, MO. Sheriff's Office, Independence Police, and Blue Springs Police.

Several Johnson County agencies attempted to assist in the pursuit. However, due to Shawnee officers initially calling the pursuit on an encrypted radio channel, few officers were able to monitor the approaching chase and did not have enough time to get in place ahead of the suspect vehicle.

Operation 100 News has been able to confirm that the suspect vehicle was displaying a switched license plate and the driver was wanted in connection to at least two aggravated burglaries in Johnson County.

The suspect is being held in Jackson County, Missouri Jail and has not been formally charged in Johnson County, Kansas.

Shawnee QuikTrip held up by armed man

Shawnee Police are investigating an early morning robbery at a local convenience store.

Officers were called to the QuikTrip, 11915 Johnson Drive, at 1:12 a.m.. The store is located on the southwest corner of Johnson Drive and Quivira Road. The clerk reported that an unknown man had robbed the store and then fled on foot.



The suspect is described as a white male around 50-years old, with short gray hair. He was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and boots.

Police say the man entered the store and asked the clerk for a pack of cigarettes. As the cigarettes and suspect's cash were exchanged, the suspect displayed a "rusty, silver revolver" and demanded cash from the drawer. The clerk handed over the cash, estimated to only be about $20, and was not harmed in the incident.

The suspect was last seen walking west and then south from the store.

Lenexa Police brought in a K-9 unit and conducted an area search. No one was located during the search.

Police continue to investigate.

Arrest made in Lenexa robbery, attempted robbery

Lenexa Police say calls to the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline led to the arrest of the suspect in connection Monday morning's robbery and attempted robbery.

Darryl Leroy Scott, 49, of Kansas City, Kansas was arrested Tuesday evening and appeared in court Wednesday.

The Johnson County District Attorney has charged Scott with two counts of aggravated robbery. Bond has been set at $100,000. He remains in custody at the Johnson County Adult Detention Center in Olathe.

Arrest made after two Lenexa convenience stores were robbed, third robbery in Mission; photos and video

Update: Kansas City, Kansas man arrested and charged in connection with the Lenexa robbery and attempted robbery.

Lenexa Police say at approximately 4:15 a.m., the JB's One Stop Convenience Store, 13094 W. 95th Street was the scene of an attempted robbery. This address is just west of Interstate 35 on 95th Street. A news release says a lone suspect entered the store and eventually approached the clerk. The suspect demanded cigarettes. As the clerk was retrieving the cigarettes, the suspect said that he had a gun, no weapon was displayed. The clerk then told the suspect that he was calling the police. The suspect left the store with no merchandise or cash.

At 4:22 a.m., the same man from the attempted robbery, successfully robbed the Quik Trip at 11070 Pflumm Road in Lenexa. This store is located on the northwest corner of College Boulevard and Pflumm Road.

This time the suspect displayed a yellow box cutting style knife to the clerk and demanded cash and cigarettes. The clerk gave the suspect an undetermined amount of cash and the cigarettes. The suspect walked out of the store towards the west and out of sight of the clerk.

Both incidents in Lenexa involved a black male in his 20's, approximately 5' 10" tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds. He was wearing a dark stocking hat and a dark wool jacket. Police also say that a 1990's model, two door vehicle of an unknown make was seen leaving the JB's One Stop parking lot just after the attempted robbery.

Mission Quik Trip Robbery:

Mission Police are also investigating a robbery with a similar suspect description robbery was the first to occur at Quik Trip, 4700 Lamar Avenue, or just south of Interstate 35 on Lamar Avenue. Police say at approximately 1:56 a.m., a black male entered the store and demanded cash from the clerk. The clerk gave the man money from the register and the suspect left the store. He was last seen on foot in the area.

In a news release Mission Police say their suspect was described as a black male with a mustache  possibly in his early 20's, approximately 5' 10" tall and weighing 170 pounds. The man had a shirt pulled up and covering part of his face.

Lenexa and Mission Police continue to investigate whether the Mission robbery was related to the two Lenexa incidents. Anyone with information regarding any of these incidents is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

Fourth JoCo convenience store robbed in eight days

Shawnee Police are investigating the armed robbery of another area convenience store, the fourth such robbery in eight day's time. Links to earlier stories can be found below.

Officers were dispatched to the QuikTrip, 11915 Johnson Drive, at 2:36 a.m. Tuesday. The store is located on the southwest corner of Johnson Drive and Quivira Road.

Police say a male suspect entered the store and displayed a handgun. The suspect ordered the clerk to give him the money out of the cash register, the clerk complied and the suspect left in an unknown direction.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6'2" tall and 200 lbs. He was last seen wearing dark pants, a dark hooded sweatshirt, ski mask or bandanna and sunglasses.

Officers searched the area with a K-9 but, were unable to locate a suspect.

No injuries were reported.

This morning's robbery is the fourth armed robbery of a Johnson County convenience store in the last eight days. The first was reported February 12th in Shawnee [link]. The next two both occurred in Overland Park on February 16th [link] and 17th [link]. Shawnee Police say they continue to investigate the possibility that this robbery is related to other robberies that have occurred recently in the Johnson County area.

Three JoCo convenience stores robbed in less than a week

Overland Park Police are investigating following the armed robbery of a convenience store. The third such robbery in less than a week's time. Links to the earlier stories can be found below.

Police say they were called to the Kicks 66 at 8150 W. 151st Street at approximately 6:30 a.m..

Two males entered the store and demanded money and other merchandise from the clerk. Both men were wearing ski masks, one was armed with a rifle and the other had a black handgun.

The pair ordered the clerk to the floor before they fled in a red mid-size vehicle. The vehicle was last seen turning northbound onto U.S. 69 Highway.

Police say the man carrying the rifle was last seen wearing a dark hooded jacket, blue jeans, tennis shoes and a black ski mask. The man with the handgun was wearing a brown jacket, red shirt, white shoes, black gloves and ski mask.

The clerk did not report any injuries in the incident.

This incident is the third convenience store robbery in just under a week, two of them just this weekend. The first was in Shawnee on Tuesday, February 12th, the second was in Overland Park on Saturday, February 16th. Currently no word from Police on whether any of the robberies may be connected.

Johnson County Quik Trip robbed

Overland Park Police are investigating after a man held up the Quik Trip gas station and convenience store on Shawnee Mission Parkway just to the west of Metcalf Avenue this morning.

Police were called to the store, 7400 Shawnee Mission Parkway just before 3:10 a.m.. The clerk told Police that a black male entered the store, displayed a handgun and demanded money.

The suspect is only described as a black male. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie with the hood up, dark colored pants and a mask. The man is said to be armed with a silver handgun. He fled through the rear door of the business and was last seen running northbound.

Police established a perimeter and searched the area with a K-9. As of this report, no arrests have been reported.

Tanker spills gasoline into JoCo storm drain

Overland Park authorities are investigating after a tanker truck spilled approximately 100 gallons into a storm drain while attempting to refill underground storage tanks at a gas station. The incident was dispatched at 4:16 a.m..

The scene is the QuikTrip, located at 9200 Santa Fe Drive just west of 87th Street & Antioch Road.

Crews from the Overland Park Fire Department are on scene working to contain the spilled gasoline.

The fire department's hazardous material team is on the scene.

The Kansas Department of Emergency Management and Johnson County's Department of Health and Environment have both been notified of the spill and are responding to assess the spill and begin clean up.

Officials say that firefighters have been monitoring the air in the storm drains to make sure that there no danger of an explosion. At this time, levels are said to be safe.

Police have closed several streets in the area. The QuikTrip parking lot and fuel pumps are partially blocked off, but the store and a few pumps remain open.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the spill remains under investigation.
