Home invasion suspects run from Shawnee officers

Shawnee Police spent nearly six hours searching for suspects involved in a home invasion, which occurred in Independence, Missouri overnight. A vehicle taken during the home invasion was found in a Shawnee backyard.

Major Dan Tennis says Shawnee Police located the stolen vehicle in the 5200 block of Halsey Street around 4 a.m.

"While getting additional units to the scene, another vehicle left the area and two of the three occupants ran on foot from the vehicle," Tennis said in a news release late Saturday morning.

Operation 100 News was monitoring radio traffic and documented that officers called out a felony car stop at 4:50 a.m. near the intersection of 51st Street and Halsey Street. Seconds later an officer could be heard reporting a black male running eastbound behind the houses. See the tweet below this report.

By 5 a.m., officers had surrounded the neighborhood, in order to search for the suspects. Officers involved in the search were instructed to switch their radios to a county-wide tactical channel which utilizes full encryption and can only be monitored by police and fire personnel.

Tennis says, "a perimeter was established to try and locate the two that ran."

At least seven Shawnee police officers, four Lenexa officers, and two officers from Overland Park held a perimeter in the neighborhood for more than two hours. One of the Overland Park units was a K-9 unit, which conducted a search of the area, but was unable to locate anyone.

At 8:40 a.m., Major Tennis told Operation 100 News in an email that officers had contacted one person and were trying to find two more who may have left in another vehicle.

Shawnee Police also called out their Special Tactics And Response team, otherwise known as the STAR Team and a Shawnee K-9 unit. "They were called and then told to disregard. We called them until we figured out we did not have a couple of felons running from the car," Tennis told Operation 100 News.

The final officers returned to service shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday, as a tow truck was removing the stolen vehicle.

Tennis says, "Independence, Mo Police recovered the stolen auto for their case."

Shawnee Police have not released any other information.

Burglary suspect rams Shawnee police vehicle, leads officers on 40-mile chase

Shawnee Police are investigating after a K-9 officer's vehicle was backed into by an aggravated burglary suspect early Tuesday.

At 2:08 a.m. the officer reported that his patrol vehicle had been "rammed" in the parking lot of the QuikTrip at 20605 Shawnee Mission Parkway.


Sgt. Tom Lynch said in a news release that the officer, "observed a white Ford Edge that has been reported used in several aggravated burglaries and criminal use of financial cards in Shawnee and other cities in Johnson County."

According to Sgt. Lynch, "the officer notified Shawnee dispatch he would be checking on a suspicious vehicle, and the white male driver of the Ford Edge backed up and rammed the patrol car, while the officer was inside the vehicle."

The driver of the Ford Edge fled the parking lot eastbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway from Woodland Road at speeds well over the posted speed limit. The suspect turned onto southbound Interstate 435 where he accelerated to 110 miles per hour in his attempt to elude officers.

Two Shawnee police officers continued to pursue the vehicle across the state line into Kansas City, Missouri.

Shawnee officers reported "damp roads" as they passed Holmes Road and continued to the east side of the Interstate 435 loop and northbound towards Interstate 70.

The suspect led officers onto eastbound Interstate 70, passing the Truman Sports complex at around 100 miles per hour.

Kansas City, Missouri officers were able to catch up and join the pursuit east of Blue Ridge Cutoff.

Shawnee officers continued in pursuit as the suspect took the ramp from eastbound I-70 to Noland Road and then immediately re-entered eastbound I-70, to avoid spike strips laid by Independence, Missouri officers.

Other Independence officers were able to get spike strips down in front of the suspect vehicle as they reached the western city limits of Blue Springs, Missouri.

With the vehicle's tires deflating, the chase slowed to around 20 miles per hour as they approached Northeast Adams Dairy Parkway. The vehicle came to a stop just to the east of Adams Dairy Parkway and the driver was taken into custody without further incident.

The pursuit covered about 40 miles, in just over 30 minutes.

Sgt. Lynch says the pursuit was for aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer.

"Neither the suspect, the officers involved, nor any civilians were injured in this incident," Sgt. Lynch said in the news release.

Shawnee officers were assisted by several other agencies including: Kansas City, Missouri Police, Jackson County, MO. Sheriff's Office, Independence Police, and Blue Springs Police.

Several Johnson County agencies attempted to assist in the pursuit. However, due to Shawnee officers initially calling the pursuit on an encrypted radio channel, few officers were able to monitor the approaching chase and did not have enough time to get in place ahead of the suspect vehicle.

Operation 100 News has been able to confirm that the suspect vehicle was displaying a switched license plate and the driver was wanted in connection to at least two aggravated burglaries in Johnson County.

The suspect is being held in Jackson County, Missouri Jail and has not been formally charged in Johnson County, Kansas.

Suspect arrested in JoCo armed robbery

Merriam Police say a 33-year-old woman has been arrested following the armed robbery of a Marshall's department store around 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Amanda Nicole Thompson was apprehended by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office around 3 p.m. Wednesday on an aggravated robbery warrant. Merriam Police confirm that the warrant stems from Tuesday's robbery in their city.

The store is located in the 5800 block of Antioch.

Police allege that Thompson handed the cashier a note which indicated she was armed with a gun and demanded money.



County Jail records show that Thompson has an address in Independence, Missouri. She was booked into the Johnson County Jail charged with aggravated robbery. She is being held on a $100,000 bond.
