Fully engulfed house fire in rural Douglas County

At 4:06 a.m. Palmyra Township fire was dispatched to respond on house fire at 358 E. 2073 Road. 

The address is about three miles northeast of Baldwin City.

Initial reports indicate that the resident returned home to find his residence on fire and called 911.

A Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter advised dispatchers that the structure was fully engulfed, just one minute after firefighters were dispatched. The highway patrol's helicopter had been in Johnson County assisting in the search for a man who ran from a stolen vehicle on Interstate 35 near the Gardner-Edgerton area. 

The helicopter pilot told dispatchers that his earlier area search was about nine miles to the east and they could see the 'glow' starting around 4 a.m.. When the helicopter was available from their search, they went to investigate the glow and learned that the fire had already been reported to Douglas County authorities.

Fire crews arrived within five minutes to confirm that the home was fully engulfed and crews would be using a defensive attack to keep it from spreading.

Palmyra Township fire requested a county-wide tender (water tanker) response and assistance from several township fire departments, Baldwin City fire and Wellsville Fire from Franklin County.

No injuries have been reported.

Vacant house fire causes heavy damage and injures firefighter

Firefighters were called to an address in the 221 S Central Street in Olathe around 4:40 Tuesday morning.

Olathe Police arrived to find fire visible inside the home. A neighbor told officers that the previous resident had been evicted and no one is believed to be living at the address.

Responding firefighters reported smoke visible from Santa Fe Street (135th Street) and Interstate 35, approximately a third of a mile away. The first fire unit to arrive at the address reported the attached garage of the single story home was fully involved with flames visible through the roof.

Firefighters have conducted a primary and secondary search of the home and confirmed that there is no one inside.

Dispatchers confirm, the fire was declared "under control" at 5:06 a.m..

Olathe Fire officials confirm one firefighter was transported to an area hospital with a back injury. That injury is said to be non life-threatening. Officials say the fire appears to have sparked when the furnace's natural gas  line broke and was ignited by the water heater's pilot light. The fire caused approximately $80,000 in damages.

Firefighters were called back to the scene around 1:30 Tuesday morning afternoon. Dispatchers say that was a false alarm and the fire had not rekindled.

Fully involved house fire in Tonganoxie

Crews from around Leavenworth County are battling a house fire in Tonganoxie this morning. The fire was reported at 505 Laughlin Drive just after 5:30 a.m..

Tonganoxie Police were the first to arrive on the scene and report the rear of the home to be fully involved with fire. Officers also reported that the elderly residents had evacuated the home.

Firefighters reported electrical lines down onto a metal fence near the home. Tonganoxie city firefighters have requested mutual aid from several surrounding Townships for aerial apparatus and manpower.

The fire was reported to be under control at 6:15 a.m.. Authorities say both residents escaped the home safely. No injuries were reported.
