Man shot in "accidental discharge" of a gun

Shawnee police, firefighters, and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics were called to the Vapor World, 15941 West 65th Street about 8:30 p.m. Monday to investigate a reported accidental shooting.

"Upon arrival, officers determined there was an accidental discharge of a firearm and a subject was struck by the stray round," Shawnee Police Captain Shaun Miller said in a news release Tuesday morning. "Witness statements and physical evidence indicates there was no altercation prior to the firearm being discharged."

Johnson County Med-Act transported to the man, only described as a 19-year-old, to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center. His injury is described as serious, but not immediately life-threatening.

At the scene on Monday evening, Sergeant Nick Pike confirmed to Operation 100 News that the shooting was not self-inflicted.

Recorded radio traffic indicates an employee was carrying the gun when the shot was fired and the round struck a customer.

The incident was captured on the store's surveillance video, which was reviewed by officers at the scene.

Man in custody after a fight involving a machete

Shawnee Police are investigating after an argument escalated, leaving one of the men with cuts on his neck from a machete.

Officers were called to the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, 11010 west 74th Terrace, at 5:35 Saturday morning.

An employee of the store told police that a man with cuts around his face, walked in and asked for help.

Police arrived at 5:46 a.m. and made contact with the man who told them where the disturbance had occurred.

The victim, only identified as a 39-year-old man, was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Major Doug Orbin said on Monday that "the victim went to the suspect's apartment in the 6800 block of Nieman Road. An argument ensued, at some point the suspect grabbed a knife and during the scuffle cut the victim around the neck area."

The victim left the apartment and went to the Walmart Neighborhood Market, where store employees called the police.

Officers returned to the apartment where the disturbance took place and took the suspect into custody. Johnson County Sheriff's Office booking logs show a 30-year-old Shawnee resident was arrested at the address and faces a charge of aggravated battery.

Olathe Wal-Mart evacuated after bomb threat

Olathe Police say they were called to the Wal-Mart, 395 N. K-7 Highway at 11:57 Sunday night on a reported bomb threat.

Officers contacted an employee who reported the store had received a call from an unknown person who stated there was a bomb in the store. The store was immediately evacuated and the Olathe Fire Department's K-9 was used to check the interior of the store.

Nothing was found during the search and the store was reopened at 2:03 Monday morning, according to a statement from Olathe Police.

The incident remains under investigation by the Olathe Police Department. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Olathe Police at 913-971-6950 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

As of this report, there have been no reports of any similar calls at other area Walmart stores as there was back in July of this year. Previous story on threats received at three Kansas Walmart stores.

Three Kansas Walmart stores report threats

Police are investigating after three Kansas Walmart stores report receiving threats early Sunday morning.

The first call was reported to Police by the Lawrence Walmart at 550 Congressional Drive at 2:27 a.m.. The other Walmart in Lawrence, located at 3300 Iowa Street, reported a similar phone call at 2:27 a.m.. Lawrence Police will only say that incidents remain under investigation and that nothing dangerous was found at either location.

Shortly after 4 a.m., Leavenworth Police responded to the Walmart located at 5000 10th Avenue after a threats call was received. Again, Police are only saying that the incident remains under investigation and that nothing of out of the ordinary was located.

All three stores remain open for business this morning.

Authorities across Missouri responded on similar threats Friday to eight Walmart stores. One Walmart store in Claremore, Oklahoma was closed for a time on Wednesday after receiving a similar threat. All of the incidents remain under investigation.
