More construction this weekend on 75th Street

The intersection of 75th Street and Switzer Road will be closed this weekend for storm drainage repair work.
Overland Park project manager Brian Scovill says the closure will start Friday between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.. Work is expected to keep the intersection closed until around 6 a.m. Sunday, weather permitting.

Miles Excavating will be replacing a storm drainage pipe which runs under the intersection.

Scovill says there will be marked detours and businesses in the area will be open throughout the weekend.

Westbound traffic will be detoured at Antioch Road to Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Eastbound traffic will be detoured at Nieman Road to Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Store employee accidentally shoots himself

Shawnee Police are investigating after a man accidentally shot himself inside a business early Thursday afternoon.

Police say they were called to Boost Mobile, located at 10329 West 75th Street, just before 12:40 p.m. on reports of an accidental shooting.

Officers arrived to find a 25-year-old employee of the business had shot himself in the right foot.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the man to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Initial reports indicate that the gun was a 9mm.

Police continue to investigate the incident and no other details were immediately available.

75th Street construction project underway, already causing major delays

Work is underway on a construction project that is sure to cause major traffic delays in Johnson County. On Thursday, July 10th the crews narrowed 75th Street to just one lane in each direction, and shifted traffic to the north side of 75th Street. The project is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2015.

The city of Overland Park is overseeing the project, which spans from Shawnee into Merriam and Overland Park. Work will impact traffic on 75th Street between Switzer Road and E. Frontage Road.

Shawnee officials say 75th Street will be shifted to the north half of the roadway for pavement replacement and bridge work. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Switzer Road and E. Frontage Road.

The Kansas Department of Transportation says the ramps to and from Interstate 35, south of 75th Street will also be closed. Spokesperson Kimberly Qualls says the northbound Interstate 35 exit ramp to 75th Street and the entrance ramp from 75th Street to southbound Interstate 35 will both close at 11 a.m. Thursday. The ramps will remain closed until late August.

Once traffic is shifted to the north half of 75th Street, eastbound traffic will not be able to access northbound 75th Street.

Qualls says there will be a marked detour, utilizing 67th Street and Antioch Road.

Northbound I-35 traffic will detour via 67th Street exit and take eastbound 67th Street to Antioch Road, then southbound Antioch Road to eastbound 75th Street back to I-35. (See KDOT provided map below)

Traffic for the ramp from 75th Street to southbound I-35 will be detoured eastbound on 75th Street to Antioch Road, then northbound on Antioch Road to westbound 67th Street and back to southbound I-35.

In late August, 75th Street traffic will be shifted to the south half of 75th Street and the ramps north of 75th Street will be closed.

The intersection of 75th Street and Switzer Road will also be closed for one weekend for storm drainage work. A date for this closure has not been announced.

Overland Park officials say access to all businesses and properties along the route will be open throughout the construction process according to a news release from the city of Shawnee.

Goat stolen from Deanna Rose Farmstead recovered at Olathe McDonald’s

Overland Park Police are investigating after five teenagers stole a goat from the Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead and then took the goat to an Olathe McDonald's.

Olathe Police were called to the McDonald's near 151st Street and Black Bob Road around 1:30 a.m. after a group of juveniles reportedly walked the stolen goat into the restaurant. The manager asked the teenagers to leave and called police.

Olathe officers arrived to find a group of teenagers with a goat, walking through the parking lot. Eventually one of the teenagers admitted that the goat had been taken from the Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead, located at 13800 Switzer Road in Overland Park. Officers contacted Overland Park Police who responded to the McDonald's with an animal control truck and gave the goat a ride home.

Overland Park Police say five teenagers were arrested and could face charges of trespassing and theft. The goat was returned and appears unharmed.

It is unclear how the teenagers got into the farmstead to begin with.

VIDEO: Cigarette and gusty winds likely cause of JoCo house fire

Overland Park Fire Investigators believe a carelessly discarded cigarette and gusty winds sparked a house fire this morning.

Crews were called to a home in the 9600 block of W. 128th Terrace just before midnight Sunday. A resident reported fire on the side of the house.

First crews on the scene reported smoke and fire visible from around a second level window. All occupants of the home were outside when crews arrived.

The fire was quickly knocked down and mostly contained to the home's exterior.

A news release says there is minor fire damage to the inside of the home.

No injuries were reported.

One crew from the Olathe Fire Department assisted on the call.

Overland Park Fire says the dry and windy conditions are causing an increased fire risk. "If you smoke, you should always fully extinguish cigarettes in sand or water."

Time Warner Cable worker shocked, burnt by live wire

A Time Warner Cable employee working to install a cable line in Merriam was shocked and burnt by an electric line Saturday morning.

The employee was working in the 10000 block of W 70th Terrace, around 8:30 a.m., when authorities say his arm came into contact with an electrical wire.

Merriam firefighters reported the worker was 20-25 feet up a utility pole when he was shocked.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the 44-year-old man to the University of Kansas Hospital for further treatment. His injuries were said to be serious but, not immediately life threatening.

Overland Park firefighters responded on a struck natural gas line Friday evening.

Atmos Energy was digging near the intersection of 151st Street and Switzer Road before 8 p.m. Friday, when a backhoe struck a four-inch natural gas line.

The strike broke the gas line and the escaping gas ignited. Atmos crews immediately notified the Overland Park Fire Department of the break and fire.

Overland Park Fire officials say firefighters cleared the area and stood by, while Atmos crews stopped the flow of gas through the line.

The fire was extinguished around 10 p.m., the intersection remained closed at that time so that KCP&L crews could inspect possible damage to nearby poles and equipment.

One home was evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

As of 7:15 a.m., Saturday, the intersection remained closed for KCP&L crews to repair damage. KCP&L says no one is without power due to the repairs.

Man accidentally shoots himself while handling a firearm

Johnson County authorities are investigating after a man accidentally shot himself in the stomach this morning in Overland Park.

Police, Fire and Med-Act crews were dispatched to a duplex in the 9400 block of Taylor Drive shortly before 1 a.m. Monday. The address is just to the northeast of 95th Street and Switzer Road.



A source familiar with the incident tells Operation 100 News that a 25-year-old man was attempting to unload a firearm, when it discharged. The round struck the man in the stomach area.

Johnson County Med-Act crews say the man's injury is serious but, not immediately life threatening.

The man was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center for further treatment.

Overland Park Police continue to investigate the incident and are not currently releasing any other details.

Two people injured in head-on collision

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating after two vehicles collided head on this morning.

The accident was reported at approximately 6:15 a.m. on 199th Street about one-quarter of a mile east of Switzer Road in Aubry Township.

Initial reports indicate that one driver may have been driving erratically and crossed the center line in attempt to pass another vehicle just before the collision occurred. There are also reports that the roadway is slippery, possibly patches of black ice in the area.

Johnson County Fire District No. 2 and Johnson County Med-Act responded to the scene where the found two people injured. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, one ended up in the ditch off the side of the roadway. One person had to be extricated from the vehicle that came to rest in the ditch.

One driver is said to be a male in his mid 50's with an apparent broken leg. He was wearing a seat belt and was pinned in his vehicle when first responders arrived. Crews worked for about 15 minutes to extricate that him from the vehicle. His injuries are said to be serious.

The second driver is said to be a male in his mid 20's. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, possible back injury.

Sheriff's Deputies and Overland Park Police have shutdown both directions of 199th Street between Switzer Road and Antioch Road.

Dispatchers tell Operation 100 News that the roadway will remain closed for an extended period of time.

VIDEO: Overland Park armed robbery

Overland Park Police are investigating after a Cricket Wireless store was robbed early Saturday evening.

Police say at approximately 5:35 p.m., they were called to the business at 10221 W. 75th Street following an armed robbery. This address is on the southeast corner of the intersection of W. 75th Street and Switzer Road.

The store employee told officers that a man came into the store, displayed a black handgun and ordered the employee to the ground, he then took money from the cash register and also took some cell phones. The suspect then fled from the address on foot.

Police say the suspect is a white male in his late 20's, approximately 200lbs, 5 feet 9 inches tall. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie with a short sleeved, red striped shirt over the hoodie, and blue jeans. The man was also wearing black sunglasses and is said to be clean shaven.

No injuries were reported during the robbery.
