Four teens seriously injured in rollover crash on I-435

Troopers say four teens were seriously injured when the pickup truck they were riding in rolled over near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Interstate 435 Tuesday evening in Shawnee.

Emergency crews were called to the northbound lanes of Interstate 435 just north of the Shawnee Mission Parkway bridge about 5:35 p.m.

Recorded radio traffic from police dispatchers indicated they received numerous 911 calls reporting the crash and that several people had been ejected from the vehicle.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says a 2001 Ford F-350 was driving on the entrance ramp from westbound Shawnee Mission Parkway to northbound I-435.

“The driver of vehicle one lost control on the entrance ramp,” according to KHP’s crash log. “After vehicle one left the roadway, the vehicle overturned onto I-435.”

Troopers say the driver and three passengers were not wearing seat belts and all four ejected onto the Interstate.

Johnson County Med-Act transported three of the injured to Overland Park Regional Medical Center and one to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Troopers have all injuries classified as “suspected serious injury.”

Operation 100 News has reached out to Johnson County Med-Act for more accurate conditions of the injured at the time of their transports.

The driver is a 16-year-old Shawnee resident. Two of his passengers are 15; the other is 16. One of the 15-year-olds is also a Shawnee resident. The other two passengers are both from Lake Quivira.

Troopers continue to investigate the crash.

The Lenexa Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Two killed, seven others injured in crash with tree

Lenexa Police are investigating after an attempted traffic stop led to a crash that killed two teenagers and left seven others injured.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez of the Lenexa Police department says, "at approximately 4:35 a.m. a Lenexa patrol officer observed a vehicle traveling in the 15700 block of West 87th Street with its lights off."

"The officer lost sight of the vehicle and turned off his emergency equipment, disregarding the traffic stop," Chavez said. "A short time later the officer came upon the vehicle which was wrecked into a tree at 80th Street and Maurer."

Recorded scanner audio indicates that the officer attempted to make a traffic stop a white Mitsubishi Galant near 85th Street and Maurer Road. The officer can be heard telling his dispatcher that the vehicle is "blacked out," or driving without any lights. The officer reported the Galant was driving "about 80" miles per hour.

Seconds later a supervisor can be heard asking the officer for an update on speeds, the officer replies, "I'm at 50, they're going about 90." 

The supervisor then tells the officer to "disregard." The officer found the car crashed with multiple people trapped inside less than a minute later.

The Lenexa Fire Department and Johnson County Med-Act responded to the scene and reported nine people were inside the car. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, three were transported to area hospitals in critical condition and four others had minor injuries.

Police have identified the deceased as Isaiah Stoble, 15, and Angelito X. Espinosa, 13, both of Kansas City, Kansas. Chavez says the other occupants of the vehicle are all between the ages of 13 and 15. All are believed to be from Kansas City, Kansas.

The Lenexa Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances and cause of Sunday's crash.

"This investigation involves the initial responding patrol officers, as well as detectives and traffic crash investigators," Chavez says. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased, as well as to all others involved in this tragic situation."

Man critically injured after being struck by train in Johnson County

A man is in critical condition this morning after being struck by a train south of Olathe.

Officials say shortly before 3 a.m. a man was walking on the railroad tracks near U.S. 169 Highway south of 167th Street when he was struck by a train. Once the slow moving Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was able to stop, the engineer called for help and located the man, unconscious.

Sheriff's Deputies arrived on scene and confirmed the man was unconscious, but breathing. Firefighters from the Olathe Fire Department and Johnson County Fire District No. 2, along with Johnson County Med-Act arrived on scene and reported critical injuries.

The man, only described as being in his late 20's or early 30's was transported to an area trauma center for treatment.

Northbound lanes on U.S. 169 highway were closed for a short time while crews were on the scene. The highway has since reopened. All rail traffic is being diverted around the area as the investigation continues, according to a BNSF spokesperson.

The Sheriff's Office says the man's injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

No other information is currently being released. Authorities say they are investigating why the man was walking on the tracks and what, if any, role alcohol may have played in the accident.

Hit & Run crash seriously injures man in Roeland Park

Roeland Park Police are investigating after a vehicle struck a pedestrian, and fled from the scene. Police say the accident occurred around 1:50 a.m., near the intersection of 48th Street and Roe Boulevard.

Johnson County Med-Act reported the victim to be a male in his "mid 30's" with serious injuries. Witnesses to the accident tell Investigators that the collision threw the man about 20-30 feet.

The suspect vehicle, only described as a yellow or orange hatchback, was last seen southbound on Roe Boulevard. Police say the vehicle will have "significant damage to the front end and likely a damaged windshield."

Pedestrian killed when struck by a train in Johnson County

Merriam Police are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a train just east of the intersection of 57th Street and Kessler Lane. Police received a call from the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe reporting one of their trains had struck a pedestrian around 1:55 a.m..

Police arrived on scene and had located the pedestrian by 2 a.m.. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The railroad crossing just west of Interstate 35 on Johnson Drive was closed for about five hours as the involved train stopped at the scene for Police to investigate the accident.

The trains engineer tells Police that he saw a male lying on the tracks but, was unable to stop the train to avoid hitting the man. Investigators believe the train was traveling 30-35 miles per hour when the man was spotted on the tracks.

Police ask anyone who may have been in the area around the time the incident occurred to contact them. Officers are also checking with surrounding businesses equipped with security cameras that may have captured the incident on tape.

Death investigation underway in Gardner

Gardner Police and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office are investigating after what is only being described as a "Death Investigation" in Gardner.

Police were called to the address near 184th Street and Juniper Terrace around 4:10 a.m. Thursday. Officers confirmed that one person was deceased at the address and began their investigation.

No other information is currently available.

Second pool related accident turns fatal in Overland Park

UPDATE: Overland Park Police confirm that the 6-year-old boy rescued from an Overland Park pool a week ago, today, has died. The boy lived in the Four Winds apartment complex in the 8000 block of Perry Street. Officials say the boy went missing from his family's apartment for about 10 minutes before he was located in the pool. He was transported by Johnson County Med-Act to an area hospital in critical condition after paramedics and family members performed CPR.

Overland Park Police are investigating after two separate pool related accidents on Friday.

Police say the first occurred around 5:30 p.m., at the Econo Lodge located at 7508 Shawnee Mission Parkway. A man was pronounced deceased on that scene after he was pulled from the pool. Police have not released any further information regarding this incident or the circumstances surrounding it.

The second incident occurred before 8 p.m., at the Four Winds Apartments in the 8000 block of Perry Street. Police say the family of a 6-year-old boy were searching for him throughout the complex. The boy was found by another resident after that resident "stumbled" over the boy on the bottom of the pool. The boy was pulled from the pool and emergency crews performed CPR for an "extended period" according to Johnson County Med-Act. As of this report, Police say the boy is in critical condition at an area hospital.

Stabbing reported in Shawnee

Shawnee Police are investigating after a stabbing was reported in the 6600 block of Park Street. Police and Med-Act were dispatched just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Johnson County Med-Act reported that one person had been stabbed and was in serious condition.

Police Officer suffers medical emergency

This morning shortly before 4 a.m., Lenexa Police were called to investigate a disturbance at an apartment complex in the 9100 block of Renner Boulevard. After the Police confirmed that the situation was stable, Johnson County Med-Act was requested to respond to the scene for a battery victim.

After arriving on scene Med-Act reported a Police Officer was having a "near syncopal episode", more commonly known as fainting. Med-Act assessed the battery victim's injuries to be minor and has requested a second Med-Act ambulance for the Police Officer.


Police are not currently confirming or commenting on this report. Scanner traffic indicates that the officer is serious but, stable at this time. The Officer is reported to be a male in his early 40's and he has been transported to an area hospital for treatment. No other details were immediately available.

Firefighters report heavy fire showing from Olathe house

Crews from Olathe and Lenexa are on the scene of a house fire at 561 E 126th Terrace in Olathe. First arriving crews reported heavy smoke showing and then spotted flames visible on the rear of the two story home. The fire was reported shortly before 9:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Upon further investigation, Firefighters reported a rear porch was "fully involved" with fire. The fire also spread to the second floor and attic. Those firefighters also reported a downed power line in the backyard. A second-alarm was added to the call at 10 minutes into the incident.

A Battalion Chief on the scene sent a crew to ventilate the roof while another attacked the fire from the inside. As soon as the vent hole was cut into the roof, fire poured from inside.

The fire was declared to be under control at 10:01 a.m.. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available.

Firefighters from the Shawnee and Overland Park Fire Departments, along with Johnson County Fire District No. 2 are filling in at Olathe fire stations currently.

Fire reported at Overland Park home

Overland Park and Lenexa Firefighters are on scene of a house fire in the 10500 block of W 92nd Place.

Firefighters were dispatched at 8:20 a.m. for a reported fire in the laundry room of the house. Upon arrival crews reported heavy smoke from two sides of the split level home.

Further investigation led fire crews to a fire in a basement wall with extension to a first floor kitchen closet. Crews are also making access to the attic to check for extension. Crews were able to confirm, with the homeowner, that everyone was evacuated safely.

No other details were immediately available and no injuries have been reported.

This is the second fire that Overland Park and Lenexa firefighters have responded on this morning. The first fire was reported around 6:40 a.m., more information on that fire can be found here.

One person critically injured in violent crash

The Overland Park Police Department's Traffic Unit is investigating after a driver was critically injured in a rollover accident near 87th Street and Conser Street around 2:15 a.m., Tuesday.

Police arrived on the scene, about two minutes after being dispatched, to find one vehicle on its roof and the driver partially ejected from the rolled Jeep Cherokee. An Overland Park Fire Department unit arrived and reported heavy damage to the vehicle. Fire crews worked about 20 minutes to extricate the critically injured driver, who was partially pinned under the overturned Jeep.


Police say the Jeep Cherokee was stolen, sometime overnight, from an address in Overland Park. The same Jeep was also involved in a hit and run accident, of at least one parked car, in the 8300 block of Robinson Street. A witness to that crash then followed the suspect. That witness tells Police that the suspect turned off all of the vehicles lights and tried to speed away. The suspect attempted to turn eastbound on 87th Street from Robinson when the vehicle rolled over.

The driver has only been identified as a male in his 20's with extremely critical injuries. Officers say the man did not have any form of identification with him.

Woman arrested after man is stabbed

Update: Lenexa Police say that a 50-year-old woman has been arrested in connection to this morning's stabbing. The male victim was treated and released from an area hospital. Police also say that the man and woman lived together in the apartment where the disturbance took place. The female suspect has not been formally charged at this time, records show she faces a charge of "Aggravated Battery causing great bodily harm."

Lenexa Police are investigating after a man was stabbed around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the 12800 block of Lord Nelson Drive, south of 95th Street, just east of Interstate 35. A witness reported two people fleeing in a red passenger car, northbound from the apartment complex. Officers located that vehicle and conducted a felony car stop near 96th Terrace and Westgate Street. Two people have been taken into custody for further questioning.

The victim is said to be a male in his early 50's with at least two puncture wounds. One wound is said to be "superficial" on his left hand and another wound to his "lower right rib cage." The man was transported to an area trauma center for further treatment.

Police continue to investigate and no other details are currently available.

Grease fire causes $15,000 worth of damages to assisted living facility

The Olathe Fire Department was called to Aberdeen Village Assisted Living and Retirement Center at 3:20 p.m. Thursday. A 911 call reported a fire in the first level kitchen area. The facility is located at 17500 W 119th Street in Olathe.

Firefighters and Olathe Police assisted in evacuations of some of the residents. Crews ordered a second alarm response due to the size of the facility and the number of residents who live on the site.

The fire is said to have been contained to the kitchen area and was extinguished by the building's sprinkler system before fire crews arrived. Crews checked attic spaces and reported that the fire had not spread into the attic or the building's roof. 


Firefighters from the Lenexa Fire Department responded on the second alarm to assist with the call.

Investigators say the fire was a grease fire and started in the facility's commercial kitchen. Damage is estimated at $15,000. No injuries were reported.

Police Officer injured in morning accident

A Gardner Police Officer was involved in a two vehicle accident Saturday morning. The accident occurred around 7:30 a.m., in the 700 block of E Main Street.

Fire crews, from Johnson County Fire District No. 1, reported that two vehicles were involved in the accident and both had sustained moderate damage.

Johnson County Med-Act reported that a Police Officer and a civilian were said to have suffered minor injures in the accident and were transported, by Med-Act, to an area Hospital to be checked out.

Due to the accident involving a Gardner Police Officer, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident.

Hit & Run accident involving a motorcycle

Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers say, at approximately 11:10 p.m., Friday, a motorcycle was struck by another vehicle causing the motorcycle to crash.

A preliminary accident report shows that both the motorcycle and the second vehicle were traveling southbound on Interstate 35, near mile marker 226.6 or near 75th Street in Overland Park. The motorcycle, a 2005 Honda, was being driven by a, 41-year-old, Gardner, Kansas man when an unknown vehicle struck the motorcycle from behind, causing the crash. The unknown vehicle did not stop at the scene and continued traveling southbound on Interstate 35.

Troopers say that the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet and sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash.

No other information was immediately available regarding the crash or the suspect vehicle. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Suspicious death investigation in Lenexa

Updated Story: Dominic Camacho has been arrested and charged with First-degree murder in his wife's death. He is being held on $1,000,000 bond. Prosecutors allege that Dominic Camacho strangled his wife, Leslie Camacho, to death inside their Lenexa home early Wednesday morning.

Lenexa Police are investigating a suspicious death this morning in the 13000 block of West 94th Place.

Police say they were called to an address in the 13000 block of West 94th Place before 2 a.m., Wednesday, after receiving a report of a possible Domestic Disturbance. When Officers arrived they found a woman, later identified as, 35-year-old, Leslie Ann Camacho, dead inside the home. Camacho's husband was found in the home and was taken to Lenexa Police Headquarters for questioning.

Johnson County Med-Act responded to the scene shortly after 2 a.m.. One person was reported to be deceased at the address.

Officers secured the home until a search warrant could be obtained. Johnson County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigators arrived on scene shortly before noon, Wednesday, when the search warrant arrived.

Dairy Creamer spill snarls traffic in Johnson County

The Kansas Highway Patrol says that at approximately 1:42 p.m., a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, with five occupants, was traveling northbound on the inside lane of Interstate 35 when it hydroplaned on the wet pavement and struck the inside concrete barrier.

A 2006 Western Semi-tanker was also traveling northbound, in the middle lane, when the Suburban crashed. The driver of the semi-tanker attempted an evasive maneuver, struck the Suburban, then crashed into the concrete barrier wall. The tanker trailer detached and went over the barrier wall, overturned and came to rest on the inside lane of southbound Interstate 35, where it began to spill its liquid load.

Johnson County Med-Act confirms that one adult, the Suburban's driver, was critically injured. The other occupants of the Suburban, including three pediatrics and a second adult also suffered minor injuries. The tractor trailer's driver refused medical treatment at the scene.

Firefighters confirmed, with the truck's driver, that the leaking liquid is "dairy creamer" and that it is not a hazard.

The accident and dairy creamer spill that followed caused both northbound and southbound traffic to be completely shut down. Northbound lanes were reopened just before 3:15 p.m., and the southbound lanes were able to be reopened about an hour later.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says, 38-year-old, James Martin, of Gardner, Kansas, was driving the Chevrolet Suburban. His passengers were; 34-year-old Cimberly Martin, 7-year-old Pierson Martin, 12-year-old Tristen Martin, and 9-year-old Gaven Martin.

Troopers also say that 64-year-old, Terry Dean Shea, of Longmont, Colorado, was driving the semi-tanker.

Single vehicle accident critically injures one in Overland Park

At 2:10 a.m., Overland Park Police received a report of a vehicle versus tree accident in the area of 154th Street and Kenneth Road. 

Callers to 911 reported that a vehicle had crashed into a tree and the vehicle was on fire. There were conflicting reports as to whether the driver was trapped in the vehicle, ejected from the vehicle or had escaped on their own from the vehicle. Police arrived and reported that bystanders pulled the driver from the vehicle. Officers also reported that on their arrival the vehicle was fully involved with fire.

Overland Park Fire and Johnson County Med-Act arrived on scene and reported the victim to be in critical condition. Med-Act described the victim as a 23-year-old female. The female was transported to an area trauma center by Johnson County Med-Act.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that there was an odor of Alcohol coming from the driver. Overland Park Police say they are investigating whether or not alcohol played a role in the accident.

Two killed in Shawnee apartment building fire

Update: Shawnee Fire Chief John Mattox says that food in a pan on the stove sparked the fire which killed two people Friday morning. Mattox identified the victims as 23-year-old JaMaur Smith and 21-year-old Jay'd Griffin, both are said to have died from smoke inhalation. There was a smoke detector in the apartment but, the batteries had been removed, according to Mattox.

Chief Mattox also says that one of the victims was found in the living room, indicating they may have been trying to escape but were overcome by toxic smoke, which doesn't take long. The other victim was found on the bedroom floor. Both victims lost died from carbon monoxide toxicity, otherwise known as smoke inhalation.

"This fire is Shawnee's first citizen fatalities from a fire in more than 10 years," Mattox said.

According to Mattox, "the first thing to go to sleep on you is your olfactory system, you stop smelling things. One of the last things to wake up on you is your olfactory system. That's why it's so important to have early detection."

The building, built in the 1970's, passed its annual fire alarm test in May 2011. Firefighters confirm that the alarm was sounding when they arrived. Dispatchers also reported receiving reports from 911 callers that the alarms were working.

At 5:32 a.m. fire crews from Shawnee and Overland Park were dispatched on a reported apartment building fire at 11601 W 75th Terrace, Carlyle Apartments in Shawnee. Three apparatus and crews were sent from Shawnee Fire along with two apparatus and crews from Overland Park Fire.

Johnson County Emergency Communications Center Dispatchers say they received multiple 911 calls about smoke in the two story building and also received an automatic fire alarm.

Shawnee Police arrived on the scene and reported that the smoke was heaviest in the basement.

Shawnee Fire crews arrived, reporting light haze visible inside. Crews located a small fire in a basement level apartment which had filled with heavy smoke. As those crews were extinguishing the fire, two victims were located. With the assistance of crews from Overland Park Fire both victims were carried out of the building.

According to Shawnee Fire Chief John Mattox, "Firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act attempted CPR, but it was too late." Mattox also says it is likely that the victims succumbed to the smoke.

Firefighters reported the fire was extinguished at 6:08 a.m.. Crews also reported fire alarms were sounding throughout the building.

No other injuries were reported.

Fire Investigators as well as Police Detectives are investigating the cause of the fire as well as a damage estimate.

The Red Cross is also on scene with apartment management assisting the displaced residents.
