Four teens seriously injured in rollover crash on I-435

Troopers say four teens were seriously injured when the pickup truck they were riding in rolled over near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Interstate 435 Tuesday evening in Shawnee.

Emergency crews were called to the northbound lanes of Interstate 435 just north of the Shawnee Mission Parkway bridge about 5:35 p.m.

Recorded radio traffic from police dispatchers indicated they received numerous 911 calls reporting the crash and that several people had been ejected from the vehicle.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says a 2001 Ford F-350 was driving on the entrance ramp from westbound Shawnee Mission Parkway to northbound I-435.

“The driver of vehicle one lost control on the entrance ramp,” according to KHP’s crash log. “After vehicle one left the roadway, the vehicle overturned onto I-435.”

Troopers say the driver and three passengers were not wearing seat belts and all four ejected onto the Interstate.

Johnson County Med-Act transported three of the injured to Overland Park Regional Medical Center and one to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Troopers have all injuries classified as “suspected serious injury.”

Operation 100 News has reached out to Johnson County Med-Act for more accurate conditions of the injured at the time of their transports.

The driver is a 16-year-old Shawnee resident. Two of his passengers are 15; the other is 16. One of the 15-year-olds is also a Shawnee resident. The other two passengers are both from Lake Quivira.

Troopers continue to investigate the crash.

The Lenexa Fire Department also responded to the scene.

One person injured in early morning crash in Shawnee

A man in his 30s was transported to an area trauma center after he was found lying on the ground approximately 20 feet from his crashed SUV on Shawnee Mission Parkway just west of Interstate 435 in Shawnee.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics were called to the scene about 1:50 Sunday morning. Firefighters arrived to find one vehicle with substantial front end damage on the right shoulder of westbound Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Recorded radio traffic indicates the man, who was believed to be heavily intoxicated, told first responders that he was not the driver.

Police and firefighters diverted all westbound traffic onto northbound Interstate 435 as they searched for a second person who had possibly been ejected in the crash. The man later told paramedics that he was alone in the SUV.

Radio traffic indicated paramedics believed the injured man might have been ejected from the SUV. His injuries were described as serious but not immediately life-threatening. Johnson County Med-Act transported him to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

The Lenexa Police Department assisted with searches of the area of the possibility of another ejected person with a drone and with a K-9. No one was located during those searches.

The westbound lanes of Shawnee Mission Parkway reopened shortly after 3:30 a.m.

Police are investigating the crash as being DUI related. No other details were immediately available.

Stretch of Shawnee Mission Parkway to close briefly Thursday morning

The City of Shawnee says the intersection of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Long Avenue will be closed for a short time Thursday morning.
The closure is expected to begin at 11:00 a.m. and will remain in place for approximately 15 minutes as KCP&L crews run an overhead line across the intersection.

Due to this work, the city says southbound Long Avenue will be closed starting at 9 a.m.

There will not be a marked detour. Drivers are being asked to use alternate routes to get around the closing.

Shawnee Transportation Manager Kevin Manning is encouraging drivers to use Pflumm Road or Quivira Road to access Johnson Drive or 67th Street as alternate routes.

Road closure barricades will be in place between 50ft and 300ft from the closed intersection. The Shawnee Police Department along with Shawnee Public Works will be helping to slow and block traffic.

Elderly woman killed, man injured in Merriam crash

Merriam Police are investigating after an elderly woman was killed in a crash late Tuesday morning.

Police say they were called to the intersection of eastbound Shawnee Mission Parkway and Mackey Street just after 10 a.m.

Captain Troy Duvanel of the Merriam Police Department says the crash involved several vehicle and one of them crashed into a rock wall. An elderly couple was in the car which crashed into the rock wall. 

Capt. Duvanel says the elderly male was driving.

Radio traffic indicates the elderly female was riding in the backseat of the car, behind the driver’s seat, and that both were wearing seatbelts.

Firefighters from Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 2 were first to arrive on the scene and reported heavy damage to one vehicle.

worked to divert all eastbound traffic to Antioch Road.

Capt. Duvanel says the man was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. His wife was pronounced dead at the scene. No one in any of the other vehicles was injured.

 The Shawnee Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit was called in to assist with documenting the crash scene for the investigation into its cause.

Police have the eastbound lanes of Shawnee Mission Parkway closed at Antioch Road as the crash is investigated. All eastbound traffic is being diverted onto Antioch Road. Police say the closure of the eastbound lanes will likely remain in place for several hours.

Firefighters from the Overland Park Fire Department and Shawnee Fire Department were also called to the scene. Police from the Overland Park Police Department and Shawnee Police Department were sent to the area to assist with closing Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Police search for suspect following Thursday disturbance

Shawnee police say they searched twice Thursday evening for a suspect involved in a domestic disturbance.

Major Sam Larson confirms officers responded to the Cottonwood Park Apartments, 6300 block of Widmer Road, for a reported domestic disturbance around 6:45 p.m.

"[There is] not much more information to give on the search, our officers searched the area with one of our K-9s," Maj. Larson said. "We know who the suspect is, we are not going to release a description of him or information about him."

The search took officers into neighborhoods south of Shawnee Mission Parkway along Pflumm Road. The suspect was not located.

"After an initial search of the area, later around 9:45 p.m., we received a call from a resident in the 13500 block of 66th Terrace who thought they heard something suspicious in their backyard, so we checked that area for the suspect," Maj. Larson said.

The suspect was not located in the second search.

Operation 100 News asked if officers saw the suspect at any point. Maj. Larson replied, "yes."

Major Larson also confirmed to Operation 100 News that officers were also out on a call involving the same suspect at the Cottonwood Park Apartments before 2 p.m. Thursday.

Customer finds employee deceased inside Shawnee restaurant

An employee died at the Subway restaurant location on Shawnee Mission Parkway near Nieman Road on Saturday.

According to police, two customers were in the restaurant and were unable to find any employees at about 8:37 a.m. Saturday. One of the customers searched the building and found a female employee face down on the floor and called police.

The two customers and a police officer attempted to revive the woman, but their attempts were unsuccessful.

A police sergeant at the scene said the employee suffered a medical issue and no foul play is suspected.

"It appears to be related to a medical condition and nothing criminal," according the sergeant.

Police tape surrounded the building until early Saturday afternoon as police continued to investigate.

Driver leads Shawnee Police on nearly 30 mile pursuit

A Shawnee officer pursued a vehicle at low speeds for nearly 30 miles early Friday morning.

According to major Dan Tennis with the Shawnee Police Department, Lenexa police saw a suspicious vehicle around a business and initiated a traffic stop on Kansas Highway 7 near 75th Street at about 1:25 a.m.

"The vehicle failed to pull over, but was not driving fast," Tennis said.

According to radio traffic, the Lenexa officer turned off his emergency equipment as he continued to follow the vehicle into Shawnee. The officer requested that Shawnee officers be notified and attempt to get in front of the car with spike strips.

Radio traffic from Lenexa officers indicated that the suspect vehicle was only exceeding the speed limit by about five miles-per-hour over the posted 55 miles-per-hour speed limit on Shawnee Mission Parkway.

"One of our officers deployed stop sticks at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Interstate 435 and then followed the vehicle as the tires disintegrated," Tennis said.

Tire debris shows that one of the vehicle's tires was destroyed and most of the tire's remnants were left at the bottom of the ramp from eastbound Shawnee Mission Parkway to Lackman Road. This is also the same area where a gouge mark begins to appear along the chase route.

The suspect led officers southbound on Lackman Road and then eastbound onto Blackfish Parkway. A Lenexa police supervisor could be heard on the radios telling Lenexa officers to turn off their emergency equipment and only follow the pursuit if they could do so while obeying traffic laws.

At least three Shawnee officers were in pursuit of the car as it continued eastbound on Blackfish Parkway passing Pflumm Road.

The car continued eastbound on Blackfish Parkway, to near Richards, where Blackfish becomes 75th Street. A Lenexa officer reported that he was able to hit at least two of the suspect's tires as the chase passed Quivira Road.

Shawnee officers continued in pursuit as the driver turned southbound on Switzer Road from 75th Street.

As Shawnee officers were calling their pursuit on an encrypted radio channel, Lenexa police dispatchers were relaying the pursuit's location over a regional pursuit channel.

When asked why the Shawnee officer was calling the pursuit on an encrypted radio channel, Major Tennis said, "I do not know why he was on channel 3, or even if he was on that channel."

Vehicle pursuits are normally called out on primary talkgroups, making it easier for officers and dispatchers from surrounding agencies to monitor the location of the pursuit and assist if needed. There is also a regional pursuit channel available, which can be monitored by officers and dispatchers across the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Radio traffic from the Lenexa dispatcher on the regional pursuit channel stated that the suspect vehicle and one Shawnee police vehicle crossed the railroad tracks continuing southbound on Switzer Road. Other Shawnee officers who were in pursuit were cut off from the pursuit by a passing train.

The lone Shawnee officer continued in pursuit into Lenexa. Lenexa officers followed the low-speed pursuit at a distance.

The driver attempted to lose officers by driving a circle through a neighborhood south of 95th Street near Haskins Street. Gouge marks in the pavement show that the vehicle was now missing two tires. The gouge marks leave the road and cross a sidewalk on the southwest corner of Logan Lane and Haskins Street. The driver then headed back to 95th Street and entered Interstate 35, where he led officers southbound into Olathe.

With speeds around 50 miles-per-hour on Interstate 35, Lenexa officers followed the pursuit with rear-facing warning lights activated to alert drivers who would be traveling faster than the pursuit.

The driver exited Interstate 35 at Santa Fe Street in Olathe. An Olathe police supervisor advised his officers to not become involved in Shawnee's pursuit.

At 1:59 a.m. an Olathe police supervisor could be heard on the radio requesting that his dispatcher contact Shawnee police and ask them to "terminate their pursuit if they only have traffic charges."

About four minutes later the Shawnee officer could be heard saying that he had terminated the pursuit. The lone Shawnee officer left the area and returned to Shawnee city limits.

When asked why Shawnee officers continued to pursue the vehicle, even when other departments said they would not be getting involved, Major Tennis said, "we were assisting Lenexa police and once he [the suspect] hit the stop sticks our officers felt like he was a danger to the public driving on a flat tire. There are lots of factors to consider and our on scene sergeant was in the best position to make that call."

The pursuit covered roughly 30 miles in about 40 minutes.

Major Tennis says Shawnee police will have charges of fleeing and eluding for the driver.

"All in all pretty minor, slow speed incident," Tennis said.

Officers from Olathe and Lenexa, along with a Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy continued to check the area for the suspect vehicle.

According to radio traffic, Olathe officers found the vehicle abandoned near the intersection of East Sheridan Street and South Stevenson Drive. A witness told officers that the man who had been driving ran west from the car. Officers and deputies set up a large perimeter and used two Lenexa Police K-9s to search the area for the driver.

After nearly 45 minutes of searching with K-9s, officers called off the search and cleared the perimeter.

Olathe Police Sergeant Bryan Hill says he is "not sure what the pursuit was for. Lenexa ended up recovering the car, so it must have been related to something they had."

Shawnee Police Major Tennis says, "an arrest was made, but I don't have those details."

Johnson County Sheriff's Office booking logs show Lenexa police made an arrest shortly before 2 a.m. It is unclear if that arrest is related to the pursuit. The arrested person is currently charged with felony possession.

Attempts to reach a Lenexa Police Department public information officer were unsuccessful on Friday.

Lenexa man charged following disturbance in Shawnee

Shawnee Police officers were called to the Pho Good Vietnamese Restaurant, 10703 Shawnee Mission Parkway, shortly before 1 a.m. Friday.

"Two adult male acquaintances were having an after work party when they got into a disagreement," Major Dan Tennis said. "The one male tried to get the other out of the business and the alleged suspect broke some things inside and threatened to shoot the victim."

Tennis says the suspect did not show a gun, but the victim believed he had one.

Court records show that the suspect lives at an address in Lenexa. According to radio traffic, Shawnee and Lenexa officers responded to that address around 1:30 a.m. The suspect's vehicle was found in the driveway, but no one came to the door to speak with the officers.

Lenexa officers took the suspect into custody in the driveway of his Lenexa home around 4:25 a.m., according to radio traffic.

Major Tennis confirms that the suspect was located at his home in Lenexa and taken to jail.

"He is expected to have court today and possibly be charged with aggravated assault and criminal damage to property," Tennis said. "The property damage was a glass case and an exit door at the business."

Early Friday afternoon, the Johnson County District Attorney's office has charged Roger Kim, 33, with one count of felony criminal damage to property. The damaged property is estimated to be worth more than $1000 and less than $25000. Damage over $1000 is a felony according to the Kansas statute.

Booking and release logs show that Mr. Kim posted a $3500 surety bond and was released from custody Friday afternoon. His next court date is scheduled for Thursday, February 26 at the Johnson County courthouse in Olathe.

Johnson County booking logs show that Amber Shafer was released from jail on Monday, April 27th. Court records show that she is now on house arrest and being monitored by GPS after posting $10,000 bond.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for May 5th at 4:30 p.m.

A 27-year-old, Kansas City, Kan., woman is facing a charge of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer after hitting an officer with an open car door in the Shawnee Hy-Vee parking lot and then leading officers on a nearly seven-mile car chase early Wednesday.

Major Dan Tennis says a Shawnee officer initiated a parking complaint at Hy-Vee, 13550 West 63rd Street, around 12:40 a.m.

Minutes later that same officer was calling a vehicle pursuit after the driver sped away with a door open, hitting the officer, according to Major Dan Tennis.

"She [the officer] was not knocked down, she held onto the door to keep her balance," Tennis said. "She was not injured, although I am sure she will be sore when she wakes up."

Johnson County Court records show that Amber Shafer was later charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing law enforcement officers, possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. Three felonies and a misdemeanor.

Officers calling the pursuit over the radio reported speeds of nearly 70 miles-per-hour on 63rd Street near Lackman. The suspect vehicle was also reported to be driving without any lights on.

Shafer sped to the dead-end of 63rd Street, west of Maurer Road, where she struck a tree before speeding back towards pursuing officers on the narrow street, according to reports.

A police supervisor near 63rd and Maurer was able to throw out a spike strip in front of the suspect car. The supervisor reported that he thought he hit one of the car's tires.

The woman then led officers south on Maurer Road to Shawnee Mission Parkway and then westbound to Interstate 435.

On northbound Interstate 435, the driver accelerated to nearly 90 miles-per-hour over the Kansas river bridge into Wyandotte County.

The pursuit ended just south of Kansas Highway 32, with the suspect's 2000 Ford Taurus going down a steep embankment on the eastside of Interstate 435. Shafer allegedly jumped from the car as it rolled down the embankment and tried to run from officers, according to police. She was quickly taken into custody.

Edwardsville EMS responded to the scene and transported the woman to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Her injuries were described as non-life threatening and were related to jumping from the moving car.

Officers from Edwardsville and Kansas City, Kansas, were also out at the crash scene with Shawnee officers.

Shafer was released from the hospital around 4 a.m. and then booked into the Johnson County Adult Detention Center just after 4:30 a.m.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a two car crash that ended with a guard rail piercing through one car.

Shawnee Police dispatched officers to the area of Interstate 435 and Midland just before 7:30 Tuesday morning, after dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting an accident. At least one of the callers reported that a vehicle had crossed through the median and struck a guard rail.

Officers located the crash on Interstate 435 between Shawnee Mission Parkway and Midland Drive.

At the scene, one car came to rest on the inside shoulder of northbound I-435 with a guard rail entering the passenger compartment through the engine bay. The end of the guard rail could be seen sticking out of the rear windshield of the car. The second vehicle came to rest in the southbound lanes on I-435.

Johnson County Med-Act reported three minor injuries at the scene. Only one of those injured people was transported by Med-Act to an area hospital.

Troopers say a 2007 Toyota Corolla was southbound in the outside lane, trying to make a lane change, when it was cutoff by an unknown vehicle. The driver of the Toyota swerved to avoid a collision, lost control, and struck a 2007 Cadillac STS, which was also southbound.

The collision forced the Cadillac into the median and the guard rail on the northbound side of the Interstate.

Troopers have identified the driver of the Toyota as a 30-year-old Lenexa woman. There was also a 7-year-old in the Toyota. Both sustained minor injuries, but were not transported by ambulance.

The driver of the Cadillac has been identified as a 64-year-old Topeka man. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his minor injuries.

The Shawnee Fire Department is investigating what caused a late-night duplex fire.

Firefighters were called to 12510 West 62nd Street around 11 Sunday night. The address is just northwest of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Long Avenue.

Arriving firefighters reported fire showing from a lower-level window.

Fire Marshal Corey Sands says, "No one was home at the time of the fire."

"Fire damaged one bedroom, but there is smoke damage throughout the home," according to Fire Marshal Sands.

The fire was under control in about 15 minutes and the cause remains under investigation.

Firefighters from the Overland Park Fire Department's station in Merriam assisted at the scene.

Fairway Police are investigating after a driver was killed in a crash with a tree early Sunday morning.

A Westwood officer reported a vehicle failing to yield to him in the area of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Norwood Road around 2:20 a.m. The officer reported the vehicle was "in excess of 100 miles-per-hour."

The Westwood officer discontinued the pursuit, but continued to drive in the direction where the vehicle was headed.

The car was found crashed and on fire in the 5600 block of Norwood Road seconds later.

Fairway Police Chief Mike Fleming says the Westwood officer attempted to stop the vehicle for traffic charges on Shawnee Mission Parkway near Belinder. The driver pulled into a parking lot and then immediately back onto the street striking another vehicle on Shawnee Mission Parkway.

The driver then accelerated across Shawnee Mission Parkway and went south of Norwood Street at a very high rate of speed.

"In the 5600 block of Norwood the vehicle struck two parked cars and two trees before coming to a rest in the driveway of 5612 Norwood," according to Chief Fleming.

The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Fleming has identified the driver as Grant Oliver McClure, 26, of Overland Park, Kansas.

Shawnee Wendy's robbed late Tuesday

Shawnee Police say they are investigating the armed robbery of the Wendy's restaurant at 11450 Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Major Dan Tennis says officers were called at approximately 11:13 Tuesday night, after a man entered and demanded cash.

"He was armed with a small black handgun," says Maj. Tennis.

Employees complied with the man's demands, handing over an undisclosed amount of cash.

Operation 100 News has learned that the store employees were then locked inside an office, before the man left the business.

Major Tennis says, "a police K-9 searched the area but the suspect was not located."

The suspect was described as a white or Hispanic male, about 6ft tall, 160-200lbs, with black hair. He was last seen wearing a navy blue or black hoodie, black sweat pants, and a navy blue mask.

Employees told police that a black 2003-2010 Chevrolet Impala with dark tinted windows was seen circling the parking lot prior to the robbery.

No injuries were reported.

COURT UPDATE: Suspects in November 2014 carjacking in Shawnee

Court update:

Johnson County court records show the now 18-year-old lived in the Cottonwood Park Apartments in Shawnee and was a suspect passenger in a November 2014 carjacking. In January 2015, he pled guilty to a reduced charge of felony burglary and received a two and a half year sentence for his role in the November 2014 carjacking. According to court records prosecutors dropped the charge of attempted kidnapping against him. Operation 100 News does not release the names of juvenile offenders.

The second suspect, a now 18-year-old Olathe resident, Madio Torrence Bayha remains in custody at the Johnson County Sheriff's Office Adult Detention Center. Court records show Bayha is being tried as an adult. He faces charges of aggravated robbery, kidnapping, recklessly fleeing a law enforcement officer, and battery of a corrections/detention officer. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 9, 2016.

Accident report: November 16, 2014

Operation 100 News has obtained a copy of the Shawnee Police Department's accident report from the November 6th vehicle pursuit and suspect vehicle crash near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Kansas Highway 7.

The six page accident report

The report identifies the driver as a 17-year-old from Olathe, and the passenger as a 17-year-old Shawnee resident. The passenger is listed as resident of an apartment complex two blocks from the Hy-Vee store where the carjacking occurred.

Operation 100 News has chosen to withhold the names of the two juveniles alleged in this case.

Included in the accident report is an illustration (shown below) of the vehicle's path and estimated speeds.

The crash narrative states that the vehicle was traveling westbound, at high speed, on 67th Street, where the driver began braking towards the west end of the Kansas Highway 7 bridge.

"The vehicle skidded several hundred feet before going off road left," the report says.

After leaving the road the car struck a KDOT owned exit sign, a ditch and then went airborne. While airborne, the car struck the top of a KDOT owned fence and rolled over twice, coming back to land on its wheels on the Nachbar Automotive property, 6801 Hedge Lane Terrace.

Officers say all of the vehicle's airbags had deployed.

"It is unknown where [passenger name] was in the vehicle when the crash occurred. He was found in the back seat when [officer name] approached the vehicle," according to the accident report.

The owner of Nachbar Automotive estimates damage done to his property to be $2,000. This includes damage to landscaping and damage to vehicles from crash debris that landed on vehicles in his parking lot.

The report concludes with a list of seven suggested charges, related to only the crash. Those charges do not include the initial carjacking incident at Hy-Vee. Suggested charges include: felony fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, no driver's license, speed too fast for conditions, improper driving, violations of traffic control signals, and reckless criminal damage to property.

Johnson County court records show both juveniles have been charged with aggravated robbery and attempted kidnapping. The driver has also been charged with fleeing a law enforcement officer.

Original Report: November 6, 2014

Shawnee Police are investigating an armed carjacking that occurred in the parking lot of the Shawnee Hy-Vee late Wednesday, November 5th.

Officers were called to the Hy-Vee store, 13550 West 63rd Street, at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday. The victim, a 64-year-old man from Shawnee, told officers that his gray 2010 Honda Accord was stolen by two, younger black men wearing hooded sweatshirts.

The victim said one of the men had a weapon, according to Maj. Dan Tennis of the Shawnee Police Department, but wasn't sure what it was. Tennis said the victim had been shopping at the Hy-Vee, had loaded his groceries into his car and was putting his shopping cart away when he was approached by the suspects. Tennis said the two suspects are 17-years-old.

"They demanded his vehicle keys, phone, wallet and told him to get in the car as well," Tennis said

Tennis said the victim instead ran inside the Hy-Vee where he asked for help and dialed 911. He was not injured.

A Shawnee officer then spotted the stolen Accord, westbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway near Barker Road. The officer attempted to stop the suspects and after initially slowing, the suspects accelerated to nearly 100 miles-per-hour and sped through red lights at Monticello Road and Hilltop Road with officers in pursuit, according to Tennis.

"Due to the high speeds, the car driving without headlights and running red lights, our officer stopped the chase," Tennis said.

Officers lost sight of the car near Kansas Highway 7, according to police. The officer that was leading the pursuit reported that they might have gone south on Kansas Highway 7. The pursuit was called off at 12:06 Thursday morning.

About 20 minutes later, Tennis said, the vehicle was located, wrecked, with the two juvenile suspects still inside.

The crash scene was on the property of Nachbar Automotive, 6801 Hedge Lane Terrace, just west of Kansas Highway 7. The vehicle crashed through a ditch, and a barbed wire highway fence.

Johnson County Med-Act transported both suspects from the crash scene, one with serious injuries. The crash scene was six-and-a-half miles from the Hy-Vee store where the carjacking occurred.

Tennis said the Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit was called out to investigate the crash. One of the juveniles was released from the hospital at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday and was transported by Shawnee Police to the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center in Olathe.
