Roadside fight victim identified as Bonner Springs man

Updated: August 24, 2012 - 2:17am

Lenexa Police have identified the man who died early Wednesday morning along Interstate 435 as Joshua N. Williams, 34, of Bonner Springs. Authorities say the van was traveling from Eudora to the Kansas City area.

Police spokesman Master Police Officer Dan Friesen tells Operation 100 News reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World that Williams was with three other people in the minivan, when he got into an argument - for an unknown reason - with another person in the back seat of the mini van.

The argument became physical, prompting the driver to stop in the east bound lanes on I-435 just west of Lackman Road.

Williams and others exited the vehicle south of the highway where the fight continued, and at some point during the altercation Williams collapsed. Other occupants of the vehicle called for medical assistance at 3:47 a.m.

Johnson County Med-Act transported Williams to an area hospital where he later died. Officers questioned three people with the vehicle and released them.

"No charges have been filed pending autopsy results and further review by the Johnson County district attorney's office," Firesen said.

Early morning fire at popular JoCo watering hole

Posted: August 21, 2012 - 3:01am
Updated: August 21, 2012 - 4:46am

Lenexa firefighters were called to Jerry's Bait Shop, 13412 Santa Fe Trail Drive, shortly before 2:40 a.m., after employees reported an odor of smoke in the bar area on the first floor. One fire unit was dispatched to investigate the source of the odor. By 2:45 a.m., that fire crew ordered a full alarm response for a building fire, after locating heavy smoke on the second floor.

Several other Lenexa Fire units along with one from the Overland Park Fire Department, responded to assist on the call. Units on scene reported fire visible from the exterior sides of the building.

The fire was reportedly knocked down within about 15 minutes. Interior crews also reported several soft spots in the floor and advised all units to use caution in the fire room. The fire was confirmed to be under control at 3:25 a.m..

No injuries have been reported. Johnson County Med-Act is standing by at the scene and assisting in keeping firefighters hydrated.

Lenexa Police say the upstairs of the address is a single apartment and an office area. The resident of the apartment was asleep inside when she was contacted by bar employees who told her to evacuate.

Lenexa Firefighters say they believe the fire started in the upstairs office. Smoke from that fire alerted bar employees to the fire. Those employees contacted the upstairs resident. Firefighters say the apartment and the bar both sustained minor damage.

Crews report smoke and water damage to the first floor of the building and have requested a response from Johnson County Health officials.

The Shawnee Fire Department had one unit assigned to fill-in at Lenexa Fire station one, until off-duty personnel was able to staff the reserve apparatus and standby at that station. The Shawnee crew was allowed to return to Shawnee around 4 a.m..

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials have not released a damage estimate at this time.

Operation 100 News was first to report this story at 2:45 a.m.. No details from any other media until after 4:40 a.m..

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after a man found sleeping in a van awoke and rear ended a Shawnee Police car this morning in Merriam.

Merriam Police say that around 4:40, Tuesday morning, one of their officers along with one Shawnee officer responded to the southbound Interstate 35 ramp to 75th Street on reports of a subject passed out behind the wheel of a van. The officers arrived and as officers knocked on the window, the man awoke and then drove into the back of a Shawnee Police car which had been parked in front of his van.

Police say that no officers were injured and after a brief struggle with the man, he was taken into custody.

During the incident, the Merriam officer was heard yelling "shots fired", a dispatcher and later a Police Department spokesperson confirmed that there were no shots fired in the incident.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation and working to determine what, if any, role alcohol may have played in the incident.

Johnson County Med-Act and Merriam Fire responded to the scene to assess the man. Police only say that he did not sustain any serious injuries in the crash or the short scuffle with officers that followed.
