Motorcyclist critically injured in crash with pickup truck

A man in his early 40s was transported to an area trauma center after his motorcycle crashed into the side of a pickup truck Saturday evening in Merriam.

Merriam police, Overland Park firefighters, and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics were called to Antioch Road at the top of the ramps to and from Interstate 35 just before 6:30 p.m.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the motorcyclist, only identified as a 41-year-old man, to the University of Kansas Medical Center in critical condition. He was not wearing a helmet according to the police.

No one in the truck was injured. The driver of the truck remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation.

At the scene, a Merriam Police Sergeant said they're unsure which driver had the green light. Police believe the motorcycle was southbound on Antioch, and the truck was exiting from northbound Interstate 35 to northbound Antioch Road.

The Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit was called in to assist with the crash investigation. Shawnee officers mapped the crash scene using a FARO 3D Laser Scanner and a drone.

The intersection reopened at about 9:15 p.m.

One man critically injured in fiery crash with tree

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez says officers were called by a passing motorist who saw the vehicle crashed into a tree and on fire.

"When officers arrived, they extinguished the fire with their in-car fire extinguishers," Ofc. Chavez said in an emailed response to questions. "The driver was transported by Med-Act to the hospital for numerous burns."

Motorcyclist critically injured in fiery crash with SUV

A man on a motorcycle was transported to an area hospital early Sunday evening after he was hit by an SUV while riding his motorcycle in Lenexa.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics were called to the intersection of 95th Street and Monrovia Street about 5:15 p.m.

Lenexa Police were first to arrive on the scene and reported that the motorcycle was off the road and on fire. The rider was still on the road. An officer applied a tourniquet to stop the injured motorcyclist's leg from bleeding.

The motorcyclist, only identified as a 19-year-old man, was transported by Johnson County Med-Act to the Overland Park Regional Medical Center in critical condition. His injuries included a broken leg and a partially amputated ankle.

A witness, who didn't want to be identified, tells Operation 100 News that the motorcycle was traveling eastbound on 95th Street and the SUV was southbound on Monrovia.

The witness was unsure which vehicle had the green light, but said that the motorcycle was driving fast just before the crash. He says that the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.

The driver and passenger of the SUV did not report any injuries.

The crash was recorded by a traffic camera at the intersection.

Police directed traffic through the intersection as the crash was investigated. Eastbound 95th Street was taken down to only one through lane during that time and both directions of Monrovia, south of the intersection were closed. The intersection reopened to normal traffic just before 8:30 p.m.

Man critically injured in rollover crash late Saturday

A man in his 30’s was critically injured when the SUV he was driving crashed into a ditch in Shawnee late Saturday night.

Shawnee police, firefighters, and Johnson County Med-Act were called to the 14200 block of Midland Drive shortly before 11 p.m. on a reported rollover crash.

Firefighters had to remove the passenger’s door to safely extricate the driver, who was found lying across the passenger’s seat.

The man was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with critical injuries.

Recorded radio traffic indicates officers suspect alcohol may have been involved.

Midland Drive was closed between 67^th Street and 68^th Terrace for about two hours as emergency crews worked the scene.

Shawnee Police continue to investigate the crash.

Critical injuries reported in single-vehicle crash

The Lawrence Police Department is investigating after a sport utility vehicle was found crashed in the ditch near Trail Road and South Folks Road early Sunday morning.

Police arrived on scene around 4:45 a.m. and reported the red SUV was crashed about 30 feet off the road.

Radio traffic from officers indicated the driver, only described as a female, was alone in the vehicle with critical injuries.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical responded and forced open the damaged door to remove the driver.

Medics transported the injured driver to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka.

The University of Kansas Public Safety Office also responded to the crash scene after Lawrence officers recognized the crashed vehicle matched the description of an SUV which failed to yield for a traffic stop earlier in the morning on Clinton Parkway near Crestline Drive. As of this report, it is unknown if this is the same vehicle.

Lawrence police are investigating the possibility that alcohol may have been involved.

VIDEO: Two men injured in basement flash fire

Johnson County Med-Act transported two men to an area burn center after they were injured in a flash fire on Friday afternoon.

The Overland Park Fire Department says the fire at 8421 Kessler Street was reported shortly before 1 p.m. Firefighters from the Lenexa Fire Department also responded to assist.

Jason Rhodes, Media Manager of the Overland Park Fire Department, says arriving firefighters found smoke coming from the duplex two men with burn injuries in front of the building.

"Medical crews went to work on the patients, while fire crews attacked a fire in the basement on the north duplex," Rhodes said. "Both patients were quickly transported and the fire was knocked down in a matter of minutes."

Rhodes says both men were transported by ambulance to the University of Kansas Medical Center Burn Unit. One man is in critical condition, the other is in stable condition.

"Investigators believe the two were working with a paint sprayer in the basement utility area and that the fumes from the sprayer made contact with an open flame from the furnace, causing a flash fire," Rhodes said.

Fire damage was largely contained to the basement area with minor extension to the living area.

"The fire unit is uninhabitable, but residents of the south duplex unit will be able to reoccupy," Rhodes said. "An adult female and two children also reside in the damaged unit, but were not home at the time of the fire."

Firefighters want to remind everyone to keep flammable substances away from open flames, always follow precautions on product labels, and to use these products in well-ventilated areas.

Topeka man arrested following stabbing and officer assist

Shawnee Police are investigating a stabbing which occurred in northeastern Shawnee early Saturday morning.

Major Sam Larson says officers were called to the 4900 block of Nieman Road around 12:15 a.m.

"A male was reported to have been stabbed in the face, and the caller gave a suspect description who had fled the scene," Maj. Larson said in the release.

Recorded radio traffic indicated that the victim, only identified as a 24-year-old man, was stabbed with a kitchen knife, which remained "lodged" in his face just below his left eye.

Maj. Larson says an officer responding to the call spotted a man matching the suspect description and stopped to contact that person.

"The unarmed suspect immediately attacked the officer and a struggle ensued," Maj. Larson said. "During the struggle, the officer was able to break free and deploy his Taser on the suspect."

Police say both the stabbing victim and the officer were transported to area hospitals.

Johnson County Med-Act Public Information Officer Alyson Angell says the stabbing victim was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

"The stabbing victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition but with non-life threatening injuries," Maj. Larson said.

The officer who was involved in the struggle with the suspect was checked out and released from a different area hospital.

The suspect, 21-year-old Cameron Dyshaun Leslie, of Topeka, Kansas is being held on $1,000,000 bond and facing charges of attempted first-degree murder and battery on a law enforcement officer.

As of Sunday evening, Leslie remains in the custody of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

The Shawnee Police Department's Investigations Bureau continues to investigate the incident.

Police have not said how the suspect and victim may know each other.

No other details have been released.

The suspect remains innocent until proven guilty in court.

Two arrested following Friday morning stabbing in Overland Park

Johnson County Sheriff's Office booking logs show Overland Park Police have arrested two men. The first, a 55-year-old, Overland Park man was mentioned by name as officers were beginning their investigation. He was arrested around 5:30 Friday morning.

Officers also arrested a 39-year-old, Merriam man just before 6 p.m. Friday.

Both men were booked into the Johnson County Jail and are facing charges including attempted second degree murder. As the men are yet to be charged, Operation 100 News is not releasing their names at this time.

As of Friday morning, police said one of the victims remained in critical condition. The second victim was treated and released from an area hospital.

Overland Park Police are investigating after two men were injured in an early-morning stabbing.

An employee of Mac's Sports Pub, 9617 West 87th Street, called police just before 2 a.m. to report a fight in the parking lot. The employee reported that one of the people involved was possibly armed with a knife.

Radio traffic indicated that officers encountered a "large" and "agitated crowd" in the parking lot.

Johnson County Med-Act transported two men from the scene to area hospitals.

A man in his mid-30's was reportedly stabbed multiple times. He was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The second victim, only identified as a man in his mid-20's, was transported with a wrist laceration. His injuries were described as non-life threatening.

Multiple radio broadcasts describe the suspect as a white male in his mid-50's. He was last seen wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans. Witnesses told officers that he was last seen running north from the parking lot. Officers know the suspect's name, which Operation 100 News is not releasing at this time.

Police say they are investigating the possibility that there may have been more than one suspect.

No other information was immediately available.

Man critically injured in crash with I-35 scale house

A 25-year-old man was transported to an area hospital in critical condition after crashing into a scale house on Interstate 35 early this morning.

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies were called to the southbound Interstate 35 scale house, near milepost 213, just after 1:50 Tuesday morning.

The scale house is located one mile south of Lone Elm Road and 159th Street or approximately two miles north of Gardner.

A truck driver called 911 after witnessing a car crash through several signs on the exit ramp to the weigh station and possibly crash into the side of the building.

Arriving deputies reported the car was heavily damaged and the driver's door would not open. The building sustained minor damage, a few bricks were knocked loose according to deputies.

No one was inside the building when the crash occurred.

Firefighters from Johnson County Fire District No. 1 and Olathe Fire arrived with Johnson County Med-Act. The driver was able to get himself out of the car, to be seen by Med-Act.

Johnson County Med-Act reported the driver's injuries to be critical and said the man became combative with them on the way to the hospital.

The vehicle was estimated to have sustained approximately 18 inches of intrusion.

Deputies are investigating if alcohol may have contributed to the crash.

Two seriously injured in Overland Park crash

The Overland Park Police Department is investigating a crash which left two people seriously injured.

The crash occurred around 12:15 Friday morning at the intersection of 87th Street and Antioch Road.

Overland Park firefighters arrived on the scene to report two vehicles were involved and one came to rest off of the road.

Johnson County Med-Act transported two people from the scene. One of the injured was said to have critical injuries and the other serious injuries.

Radio traffic indicated that a 28-year-old man, the driver of one vehicle, admitted that he had been drinking prior to the crash.

The southbound lanes of Antioch Road were closed from Santa Fe Drive to 88th Street. Both directions of 87th Street were closed west of Antioch to Benson Street. All lanes reopened around 2 a.m.

Police have not released any other information.

Man dies after ATV collides with deer, woman remains critical

The 22-year-old man involved in an ATV crash near Vinland died as a result of his injuries on Sunday, according to Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lieutenant Steve Lewis.

Hospital officials at the University of Kansas Hospital tell my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World that the 19-year-old female remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Two people were critically injured when their ATV struck a deer in rural Douglas County early Saturday.

A driver found the ATV, on its side, in the middle of North 700 Road around 4:25 Saturday morning and called 911 for help. The crash was located between East 1600 Road and East 1650 Road, near Vinland.

The scene is approximately two and a half miles north of Baldwin City or approximately five miles south of Lawrence.

Deputies were first to arrive on the scene and found a man and a woman, both unconscious, after being thrown from the ATV.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical triaged both of the injured to be in critical condition. First responders from Baldwin City Fire and Lawrence Fire are also on scene.

A 22-year-old man was transported by ambulance to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. A 19-year-old woman was transported by ambulance to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

Life Star and other medical helicopters are grounded due to current weather conditions.

Overland Park Regional spokesperson Chris Hamele tells the Journal-World that the man remains in critical condition Saturday afternoon.

The woman is in serious condition according to Douglas County Sheriff's Office public information officer Steve Lewis.

Police: driver suffered a seizure, causing crossover accident

Operation 100 News has obtained a copy of the accident report from last weekend's accident, which left four people injured.

The report states that police and emergency room doctors believe the driver of the white Ford Mustang suffered a seizure, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, and cross the raised center median.

According to the report, the Mustang was traveling eastbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway, just east of Nieman Road, when the driver suffered a seizure. The Mustang crossed the median and collided head on with a Chevrolet Equinox that was traveling westbound on the inside lane.

A 19-year-old Shawnee man was behind the wheel of the 2006 Ford Mustang. Police say he was on his way to work in Merriam. He was wearing his seat belt and the vehicle's front airbag deployed in the crash.

A 24-year-old Leavenworth woman was driving the westbound 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. A 27-year-old woman was a front seat passenger and the driver's one-year-old son was secured in a car seat in the back seat. Police say both women were wearing seat belts, front and side impact airbags also deployed in the accident.

The report also confirms that four Johnson County Med-Act ambulances transported all four people involved, to area hospitals. The one-year-old was transported to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

Police spoke to a man who was traveling westbound, behind the Equinox, who witnessed the Mustang cross the median and the crash.

A Shawnee Fire Battalion Chief was stopped on northbound Nieman Road at Shawnee Mission Parkway when he heard the collision. He made his way to the crash scene, called for additional fire and medical resources and the police to respond.

Operation 100 News will not be identifying those injured in the accident, as no drugs or alcohol are suspected and one driver suffered a medical condition.

An eastbound vehicle crossed a median and collided head-on with another vehicle, forcing officers to close all lanes of Shawnee Mission Parkway late Saturday morning.

Maj. Doug Orbin of the Shawnee police said that just before 11 a.m. Saturday, the driver of a white Ford Mustang suffered a "medical episode" and crossed over the raised median on Shawnee Mission Parkway. The Mustang collided with a Chevy Equinox heading westbound and carrying three people.

The accident occurred just east of Nieman Road.

Operation 100 News independently confirmed that Med-Act transported four people from the scene. An adult was critically injured, another adult seriously injured, and a juvenile along with a third adult both sustained minor injuries.

Orbin said all four passengers were transported to the hospital, all with non-life threatening injuries.

The Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the accident.

Several lanes of Shawnee Mission Parkway were opened just before noon, with the remaining lanes opened about 12:30 p.m..

Charges filed against teen involved in deadly Overland Park crash

The Johnson County District Attorney's office has charged 17-year-old Conner Estrella of Overland Park with one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of aggravated battery. The charges stem from an August 7th crash in Overland Park. Prosecutors have also filed a motion for Estrella to be tried as an adult.

Kevin Moroney, 52, was standing near a parked vehicle along the street with his girlfriend Maureen Hoag. The crash killed Moroney and critically injured Hoag.

Overland Park Police are investigating after one person was killed and another was injured in a vehicle versus pedestrian accident.

Police and fire crews were called to an address in the 8400 block of Tomahawk Road at 11:57 Thursday night.

First units arrived on the scene just after midnight to report one vehicle with major damage.

Johnson County Med-Act reported one person deceased and another with critical injuries.

Overland Park Police have called out their Traffic Safety Unit for accident investigation.

Sergeant Scott Ferguson says a black car, being driven by a 17-year-old male, was traveling southbound on Tomahawk Road. Both pedestrians were standing on the west side of the street, near a parked white car, when they were struck.

The southbound vehicle struck both pedestrians and the parked car.

Police confirm a male pedestrian was killed and a female pedestrian was seriously injured.

The driver of the black car remained at the scene with minor injuries. Police are investigating if he was impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Suspect charged in JoCo double homicide

Lenexa Police say they have arrested a person of interest in last week's triple shooting which left two men dead and another critically injured.

Johnson County booking records show that Alex Wayne Brune, 27, of Lenexa was arrested around 8:30 Wednesday evening.

Brune faces two counts of premeditated first-degree murder and is being held on $2,000,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon.

The criminal complaint shows that Brune is also charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated burglary.

The complaint alleges that Brune was attempting to rob Brian Baskind and his step-father Clifford Preston.

During the failed robbery attempt, Brune allegedly killed both Baskind and Preston. Brune was also shot during the incident and he called 911 to report that he had been shot. The 911 call brought officers to the home, where Brune told officers that two men were dead inside. At that time, Brune claimed that he did not know who had shot him or the other men.

Lenexa Police are investigating after three men were found shot inside a home.

Master Police Officer Dan Friesen says at 10:08 p.m. Wednesday, Lenexa Police Communications received a 911 call from an individual who said he had been shot.

The man was not able to provide dispatchers with an address. Dispatchers kept the man on the phone and plotted his location, using cell phone pings, to the 8500 block of Hallet Street.

Officers located the injured man in the front yard of the home and transported him to a Med-Act ambulance that was staged nearby.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the man in critical condition to an area trauma center. The man remains hospitalized Thursday afternoon.

MPO Friesen says, "during the initial response, officers learned there may be additional victims inside a residence. It was later determined two individuals inside the residence were deceased."

Police say Brian S. Baskind, 47, and Clifford E. Preston, 79, were found dead inside the home. The man who was wounded has not been officially identified.

"The relationship between the three individuals is unknown," according to MPO Friesen.

The Crime Scene Investigations Unit from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office Criminalistics Laboratory continues to process the scene.

Man killed in accident at Shawnee FedEx facility identified

Shawnee Police are investigating after a 21-year-old died from injuries sustained at a FedEx Ground sorting facility Tuesday morning.

Police have identified the man as Nicholas Huston.

Johnson County Med-Act was called to the facility, located at 8000 Cole Parkway in southwest Shawnee, just before 8 a.m. on reports of a person injured after a fall. Before emergency crews could arrive, personnel at the facility reported that the injured man had stopped breathing. Security and other FedEx personnel conducted CPR until Shawnee firefighters arrived.

Captain Jodi Andrews of the Shawnee Police Department says, "upon arrival, officers found a male subject lying on the pavement."

Huston was resuscitated at the scene and said to be in critical condition with a head injury. Johnson County Med-Act, with the assistance of Shawnee Fire, rushed the Huston to an area trauma center where he later passed away as a result of his injuries.

Witnesses told police that the Huston had fallen out of a golf cart.

Major Bill Hisle says there were four men riding in a golf cart, when one fell out for some reason. Officers are still investigating exactly what happened.

Tuesday's accident is the third fatal incident at this same FedEx Ground sorting facility since March 2013. Links to previous Operation 100 News reports can be found below.

Man critical after truck hits tree

A man was critically injured when his pickup truck slammed into a tree and caught fire early Monday.

The accident was reported just after 2 a.m., on 79th Street east of Belinder Avenue in Prairie Village.

Johnson County Med-Act arrived to report the truck was on its side with very heavy damage and one person trapped inside.

A resident of the area tells Operation 100 News that the driver appeared to be a man in his 20's.

The injured man was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital in critical condition. His injuries are said to include serious trauma and first-degree burns to his upper body.

Prairie Village Police have called for assistance from the Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit for accident investigation.

Dispatchers say 79th Street will remain closed between Belinder and Booth until officers complete the on-scene accident investigation.

Man in critical condition after being struck on K-10

The Kansas Highway Patrol says a man who stopped to help a stalled motorist, is now in critical condition after being struck on Kansas Highway 10.

The accident occurred in the westbound lanes of K-10 just west of K-7 in Olathe around 8:30 p.m..

Johnson County Med-Act transported the man to an area hospital with critical injuries.

Troopers say the injured man was driving westbound on the highway when he found a car stalled in the right lane of the highway. The man decided to help and parked his car on the right shoulder.

As the man was trying to assist the stalled driver, a third vehicle struck the man and the stalled vehicle.

The westbound lanes remained closed until around 12:30 a.m. Saturday as the Kansas Highway Patrol's Critical Highway Accident Response Team worked to map the incident scene.

One killed, another critical in tractor-trailer crash on I-70 in Leavenworth County

A 30-year-old Aurora, Colo., man was identified as the driver killed early Saturday morning after his tractor-trailer crashed into a Kansas Turnpike tollbooth at the Tonganoxie interchange on westbound Interstate 70.

Sergiy Angelchev died at the scene of the crash, which occurred just before 3 a.m. Saturday, according to a Kansas Turnpike Authority accident report.

Meanwhile, a turnpike authority official said Saturday that a passenger, Roman Ilyaich, 25 of Aurora, Colo., is in critical condition after being airlifted from the scene and taken to a Kansas City-area trauma center.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports two men were in the truck that hit the tollbooth at highway speeds, never slowing down before crashing. The truck's cab wrapped around the tollbooth and the engine landed about 50 yards from the tollbooth. The tollbooths that the truck hit are not manned by personnel.

Around noon turnpike officials said the terminal was down to one lane westbound because of the accident investigation and advised motorists to expect delays. The turnpike authority is still investigating the accident and expects delays as it continues to direct traffic through the toll booth's K-tag lane.

A turnpike official meanwhile said it is still not known for whom the men worked.

Firefighters and medics were dispatched to the toll plaza just after 3 a.m.. near milepost 217 for an injury accident involving a tractor-trailer.

Kansas Troopers arrived to report one person, later identified as Angelchev, had been ejected from the truck and was unconscious. A second injured person, Ilyaich, was still inside the truck cab with critical injuries. Angelchev died at the scene and Ilyaich transported to Kansas University Medical Center.

A LifeStar helicopter landed in the eastbound lanes of I-70, temporarily blocking several lanes through the toll plaza for a short time. Those lanes reopened around 4 a.m. All westbound lanes were closed before re-opening around 5:45 a.m. Lanes closed again around noon for the investigation.

At the toll plaza, both left and center westbound toll lanes are blocked and drivers must use the K-tag lane.

The westbound toll plaza's center cement barriers are demolished and there are no skid marks on the road. The cab appears to have split the barriers and wrapped itself around the tollbooth.

The truck was hauling garden hoses. Hundreds are strewn across a 50-yard area at the scene among the debris.

Troopers asked a Highway Patrol helicopter to respond to the scene after sunrise to photograph the accident scene from above.

Two people critically injured in separate Douglas County accidents

Douglas County Deputies are investigating two accidents this morning.

First accident

The first was reported shortly before 12:30 Sunday morning near the intersection of N. 950 Road and E. 850 Road, south of Clinton Lake.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene to report one vehicle, on its side and in the ditch. The driver had to be extricated from the vehicle.

Medics reported the driver's injuries to be critical. A LifeStar Helicopter transported the injured driver to Stormont-Vail HealthCare center in Topeka.

Clarion Springs EMS, Clinton Township Fire, Wakarusa Township Fire and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical all assisted on the scene and the helicopter landing zone.

Second accident

The second accident was initially reported as a possible grass fire just before 1:10 a.m.. It is unclear who reported the fire but, an arriving deputy found a vehicle down a steep embankment at the intersection of N. 1550 Road and E. 1625 Road in Wakarusa Township.

Medics reported the driver's injuries to be critical and requested a helicopter for transport. Dispatchers contacted LifeFlight Eagle and LifeNet, both were unavailable due to fog in the area east of Lawrence.

The injured driver, only identified as a 55-year-old man, was transported by a Lawrence Medic unit to the University of Kansas hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. His injuries are said to include a head laceration.

Arrest made in Saturday morning homicide | Police continue to investigate

A 29-year-old Lawrence man faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in the 2400 block of Cedarwood Avenue early Saturday.

The shooting was reported just before 3:10 a.m.. Officers located a male, now identified as Patrick D. Roberts, 39, with a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews reported the Roberts' injuries to be critical. Medics rushed him to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A resident in the area told police that a person ran from the building eastbound and then northbound towards 23rd Street. That person was only described as a male wearing a black jacket.

Police detained two people for questioning shortly after the shooting. One ran from an officer in the area of 27th Street and Redbud Lane. He was apprehended at 4:25 a.m..

Lawrence Police Sgt. Trent McKinley tells the Lawrence Journal-World that Dustin D. Walker, 29 was arrested shortly after 9 a.m..

The second person that was detained for questioning was released later Saturday morning.
