Careless discard of smoking materials cited as cause for OP apartment fire which left woman in critical condition

A woman in her 40s is in critical condition after she was rescued from an apartment fire near 87th Street and Grant on Monday evening. On Tuesday, fire investigators announced that the fire was caused by careless smoking.

Firefighters from Overland Park and Lenexa were called to the Four Seasons Apartments at 9510 West 87th Street just before 9 p.m.

Overland Park Police were first to arrive on the scene and reported smoke coming from a second-floor apartment. A neighbor told police that they had not seen the woman who lives in the apartment. An officer was able to get into the apartment but was forced back outside by the smoke.

Firefighters were able to rescue the woman from the apartment a short time later. She was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas where she is said to be in critical condition.

Overland Park Fire Department Media Manager Jason Rhodes says firefighters had the fire under control within 10 minutes. The damage was contained to the apartment where the fire started.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the police sergeant who initially tried to rescue the woman from her apartment. Rhodes says the sergeant is being treated for "minor smoke inhalation." No other injuries were reported.

Fire investigators say the fire was accidental, caused by careless discard of smoking materials. No working smoke detectors were found in the victim's apartment.

"If you need assistance with smoke alarms, contact you local fire department," Rhodes said. "Additionally, smoking materials should always be completely extinguished in sand or water before discarding."

The Red Cross is assisting two adults and three children who were displaced by the fire.

One man rescued from early-morning apartment fire

The Lenexa and Overland Park fire departments were called to the building at 13166 West 88^th Court in the Rosehill Pointe Apartments just before 2:45 a.m.

Recorded radio traffic indicates those crews arrived to find flames visible from a second-floor apartment on the front of the building.

Neighbors informed police officers that a man was still inside one of the apartments. 

Firefighters were able to locate the man quickly and safely remove him from the building.

The man, only described as being in his late 30s, was found inside his apartment when firefighters arrived. He was transported by Johnson County Med-Act to the University of Kansas Medical Center to be treated for second-degree burns to his upper body.

At least one second-floor apartment was heavily damaged by fire

Firefighters had the fire under control within 10 minutes. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and a damage estimate was not immediately available.

Olathe man arrested after brief car chase in Lenexa

Lenexa Police arrested a 54-year-old Olathe man after he allegedly failed to yield for a traffic stop on Interstate 35 just after 9:30 Thursday evening.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez of the Lenexa Police Department says an officer tried to stop the vehicle in the 8700 block of southbound Interstate 35 for a lighting violation.

"The vehicle got off on the 95th Street ramp, where our officers disregarded the traffic stop," Chavez said.

Officers tailed the vehicle, a 2002 Chevrolet Impala, as it drove west on 95th Street to Pflumm Road, where the driver turned north. The suspect turned east on Santa Fe Trail Drive, and then south on Quivira Road.

"At times, officers were able to see the direction the vehicle was headed and we successfully deployed stop sticks in the 9400 block of Quivira," Chavez said.

After hitting the stop sticks, the driver continued to westbound 95th Street and back to northbound Pflumm Road. He drove through several parking lots near 87th Street and Pflumm then returned to southbound Pflumm Road.

"We were also receiving calls from citizens about the location of the vehicle," Chavez said. "The vehicle was eventually located abandoned in the 9400 block of Pflumm."

A witness who was driving behind the suspect vehicle gave officers a description of the suspect and told them he ran east along 94th Street.

Officers quickly set a perimeter to contain the suspect and deployed a K-9 to search for him.

"We received a call from a citizen in the 13400 block of West 94th Street who said that an unknown male was sitting on his front porch," Chavez said. "Our officers contacted this male and he was eventually arrested for numerous warrants."

Kilgore is awaiting his first appearance in court on new charges related to the pursuit. His pending charge shows to be a felony for reckless fleeing from a law enforcement officer. He's also being held on charges from a 2017 obstruction case in which he failed to appear for his court date.

Two arrested following Friday morning stabbing in Overland Park

Johnson County Sheriff's Office booking logs show Overland Park Police have arrested two men. The first, a 55-year-old, Overland Park man was mentioned by name as officers were beginning their investigation. He was arrested around 5:30 Friday morning.

Officers also arrested a 39-year-old, Merriam man just before 6 p.m. Friday.

Both men were booked into the Johnson County Jail and are facing charges including attempted second degree murder. As the men are yet to be charged, Operation 100 News is not releasing their names at this time.

As of Friday morning, police said one of the victims remained in critical condition. The second victim was treated and released from an area hospital.

Overland Park Police are investigating after two men were injured in an early-morning stabbing.

An employee of Mac's Sports Pub, 9617 West 87th Street, called police just before 2 a.m. to report a fight in the parking lot. The employee reported that one of the people involved was possibly armed with a knife.

Radio traffic indicated that officers encountered a "large" and "agitated crowd" in the parking lot.

Johnson County Med-Act transported two men from the scene to area hospitals.

A man in his mid-30's was reportedly stabbed multiple times. He was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The second victim, only identified as a man in his mid-20's, was transported with a wrist laceration. His injuries were described as non-life threatening.

Multiple radio broadcasts describe the suspect as a white male in his mid-50's. He was last seen wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans. Witnesses told officers that he was last seen running north from the parking lot. Officers know the suspect's name, which Operation 100 News is not releasing at this time.

Police say they are investigating the possibility that there may have been more than one suspect.

No other information was immediately available.

Lenexa Police are investigating after a man died from a gunshot wound early Thursday morning.

The incident occurred on the south side of 87th Street Parkway and Long Street, just across the street from Lenexa Police Department headquarters.

A black 2013 Ford Focus with Missouri license plates was stopped just south of the intersection with the driver's door open.

A yellow tarp was draped over the car's interior.

At 1:19 a.m. an officer called out "shots fired" over the radio.

Master Police Officer Dan Friesen says, "a two-officer unit on patrol saw a black Ford Focus sitting in the middle of the road on Long Street, just south of 87th Street Parkway. When officers pulled up behind the vehicle they heard a single gunshot."

Johnson County Med-Act responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Police have identified the him as a 31-year-old from Kansas City, Missouri. Police have released his name, however Operation 100 News is choosing not to release it.

Friesen says, "there were no shots fired by officers and they had not contacted the man previously."

MPO Friesen has confirmed to Operation 100 News that prior to officers arriving, the Ford Focus had collided with a median at 87th Street Parkway and Rosehill Road. The vehicle ran over a median sign and left behind several large pieces of bumper and a fender well.

Police had the eastbound lanes of 87th Street Parkway closed at Rosehill Road for about 90 minutes.

Operation 100 News was at this scene for approximately an hour this morning, attempting to speak with officers at the scene and was told that no one was available to share any information.

Friesen says "typically officers on scene do not release information to media in order to avoid conflicting information being given or providing information that could compromise an investigation."

Had Operation 100 News simply been informed that this was a suspected suicide, there would not have been any reason to proceed with a report.

Operation 100 News does not typically report suicides, however as this one occurred just across the street from the Lenexa Police headquarters, in front of officers, and along busy 87th Street Parkway it is being reported.

Two seriously injured in Overland Park crash

The Overland Park Police Department is investigating a crash which left two people seriously injured.

The crash occurred around 12:15 Friday morning at the intersection of 87th Street and Antioch Road.

Overland Park firefighters arrived on the scene to report two vehicles were involved and one came to rest off of the road.

Johnson County Med-Act transported two people from the scene. One of the injured was said to have critical injuries and the other serious injuries.

Radio traffic indicated that a 28-year-old man, the driver of one vehicle, admitted that he had been drinking prior to the crash.

The southbound lanes of Antioch Road were closed from Santa Fe Drive to 88th Street. Both directions of 87th Street were closed west of Antioch to Benson Street. All lanes reopened around 2 a.m.

Police have not released any other information.

Police remain reluctant to release any information regarding recent string of business burglaries

Update:

Lenexa Police remain tight-lipped as they continue to investigate a string of early-morning burglaries all involving the same Lenexa business.

Master Police Officer Dan Friesen says, "we've had four business burglaries at Sonic, 8610 Pflumm, since September 25, 2014. The others were, October 25, October 27, and November 24."

Friesen says, "detectives are following leads, but no arrests have been made to this date."

"There are no surveillance images or suspect descriptions," according to Friesen.

The only detail that MPO Friesen would confirm is that cash has been taken in each of the four burglaries.

Operation 100 News remains the only media reporting any news of these burglaries and I will continue to follow up with police as their investigation continues.

Lenexa Police are investigating after the Sonic Drive In, 8610 Pflumm Road, was burglarized this morning.

The same Sonic location, located just off of Pflumm Road near 87th Street Parkway, has been burglarized four times since late September. Each time officers have set up a large perimeter around the area and then searched for suspects with a K-9.

The first burglary occurred on September 25th. Following that burglary, Master Police Officer Dan Friesen told Operation 100 News that the Sonic, "experienced a small loss of money."

Other burglaries have been reported at the same location on October 25th 27th and this morning, November 24th. Attempts to reach Lenexa Police regarding the October burglaries were not returned.

This morning officers were dispatched at 3:45 am and arrived within seconds. Arriving officers found glass in one door had been shattered and someone had forced their way into the building.

Again, a large perimeter was set up and a K-9 unit was called in from off-duty. The K-9 officer searched the area but was unable to locate any suspects.

Officers at the scene would not give any details about what, if anything, was taken. Attempts to reach a PIO on Monday were not returned.

Operation 100 News was the only media on scene as a manager arrived to assess the damage.

NEW INFO: Three burglaries under investigation in JoCo

Police from two different agencies are investigating burglaries that occurred early Saturday morning.

Overland Park Police say they received an alarm call at Beer Cave Wine and Spirits, 10037 West 87th Street, at 3:13 a.m.. The alarm covered glass break in the front of the building. Police found that someone had thrown a large rock through a window, then reached in and grabbed some alcohol. Officer Gary Mason says the suspect left on foot.

Officer Mason acknowledged that Shawnee Police are investigating two similar reports from the same morning. "We're not sure if those are related though," he said in an email Wednesday morning.

Shawnee Police say they were called at 3:23 a.m. on an alarm call at Reynolds Lawn & Leisure, 12902 Shawnee Mission Parkway. Officers found that someone had forced entry to the building by breaking a window. Officers searched the building and did not find anyone still inside. Police determined that lawn equipment was stolen.

At 3:40 a.m. Shawnee Police received another alarm call. This alarm was at Clark's Tool, located at 6217 Goddard Street. The store is a block north of Shawnee Mission Parkway. Again officers found damaged glass and evidence that someone had been inside the building. Officers searched the building and did not find anyone inside. Police says various tools were taken.

Steve Wiskur the branch manager at Clark's Tool was just beginning to assess the damage to a front door when I arrived. "They took quite a bit of smaller items" he said. "This has happened before, but it has been several years." He said he had not taken inventory yet and didn't have an approximate dollar amount for the items that were taken.

Shawnee Police say the suspect's vehicle is a white, early 2000's model Chevrolet pick-up truck with a full size bed.

Suspect charged in JoCo double homicide

Lenexa Police say they have arrested a person of interest in last week's triple shooting which left two men dead and another critically injured.

Johnson County booking records show that Alex Wayne Brune, 27, of Lenexa was arrested around 8:30 Wednesday evening.

Brune faces two counts of premeditated first-degree murder and is being held on $2,000,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon.

The criminal complaint shows that Brune is also charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of aggravated burglary.

The complaint alleges that Brune was attempting to rob Brian Baskind and his step-father Clifford Preston.

During the failed robbery attempt, Brune allegedly killed both Baskind and Preston. Brune was also shot during the incident and he called 911 to report that he had been shot. The 911 call brought officers to the home, where Brune told officers that two men were dead inside. At that time, Brune claimed that he did not know who had shot him or the other men.

Lenexa Police are investigating after three men were found shot inside a home.

Master Police Officer Dan Friesen says at 10:08 p.m. Wednesday, Lenexa Police Communications received a 911 call from an individual who said he had been shot.

The man was not able to provide dispatchers with an address. Dispatchers kept the man on the phone and plotted his location, using cell phone pings, to the 8500 block of Hallet Street.

Officers located the injured man in the front yard of the home and transported him to a Med-Act ambulance that was staged nearby.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the man in critical condition to an area trauma center. The man remains hospitalized Thursday afternoon.

MPO Friesen says, "during the initial response, officers learned there may be additional victims inside a residence. It was later determined two individuals inside the residence were deceased."

Police say Brian S. Baskind, 47, and Clifford E. Preston, 79, were found dead inside the home. The man who was wounded has not been officially identified.

"The relationship between the three individuals is unknown," according to MPO Friesen.

The Crime Scene Investigations Unit from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office Criminalistics Laboratory continues to process the scene.

Armed robbery reported at JoCo apartment complex

Overland Park Police are investigating after an armed robbery at the Cherbourg Apartments, near 87th Street and Glenwood Street.

Police say the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. but was not reported to police until 4:40 a.m..

The apartment residents, a man and a woman, tell police that four men kicked in the apartment door and demanded money. All four of the men were wearing ski masks.

A statement from Overland Park Police says that one of the suspects was  "carrying some type of rifle and another had a handgun."

Earlier reports indicated that one of the suspects was armed with a TEC-9 or similar style weapon, a second suspect was carrying an assault rifle, possibly an AK-47 and a third suspect had a pistol.

All of the suspects were described as black males wearing ski masks. The men took electronics, jewelry and clothing items before leaving the apartment.

Overland Park Police believe the victims were specifically targeted.

No one was injured.

Serious injuries reported in separate JoCo crashes

Lenexa Police are investigating two serious injury accidents this morning.

The first crash was reported to authorities just after 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, in the area of 79th Street and Pflumm Road. Officers arrived at the scene quickly and located a vehicle that had left the south side of 79th Street and struck a tree. The driver of the vehicle was unresponsive, still inside the car.

Lenexa firefighters extricated the driver from the vehicle and he was transported by Johnson County Med-Act to an area trauma center. The driver was only described as a male with critical injuries. He was not believed to have been wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred.

Police say the man's injuries are life threatening. Officers continue to investigate what cause the accident.

The scene was on the south side of 79th Street, between Pflumm Road and Noland Road. Officers closed 79th Street to all traffic while crews worked the scene. The road was reopened to all traffic around 3:30 a.m..

Emergency crews were called to a second accident in the area of 87th Street and Woodland Road around 2 a.m. Wednesday. This scene is about five miles from the first scene.

A caller reported a vehicle had rolled over on the 87th Street bridge that goes over the railroad tracks, just east of Woodland Road. Again, officers arrived quickly and found the vehicle had came to rest on its side

and blocking both eastbound lanes.

As Lenexa Fire and Johnson County Med-Act arrived at the scene 87th Street was completely shutdown.

A witness tells Operation 100 News that the vehicle way laying on its passenger side and the driver was held in place by his seat belt. "The truck smelled of alcohol," according to the witness.

Firefighters worked for about 15 minutes to stabilize the vehicle and safely remove the driver.

Johnson County Med-Act transported the man, said to be in his 30's, to an area trauma center with serious injuries. Police say the man's injuries are serious but, not immediately life threatening. Officers continue to investigate what caused the accident and if alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

All lanes of 87th Street were reopened as the scene was cleaned up, around 3:30 a.m..

Tanker spills gasoline into JoCo storm drain

Overland Park authorities are investigating after a tanker truck spilled approximately 100 gallons into a storm drain while attempting to refill underground storage tanks at a gas station. The incident was dispatched at 4:16 a.m..

The scene is the QuikTrip, located at 9200 Santa Fe Drive just west of 87th Street & Antioch Road.

Crews from the Overland Park Fire Department are on scene working to contain the spilled gasoline.

The fire department's hazardous material team is on the scene.

The Kansas Department of Emergency Management and Johnson County's Department of Health and Environment have both been notified of the spill and are responding to assess the spill and begin clean up.

Officials say that firefighters have been monitoring the air in the storm drains to make sure that there no danger of an explosion. At this time, levels are said to be safe.

Police have closed several streets in the area. The QuikTrip parking lot and fuel pumps are partially blocked off, but the store and a few pumps remain open.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the spill remains under investigation.
