Haz-Mat team and bomb squad investigate powdery substance at government office

Posted: December 27, 2018 - 1:52 a.m.

Specialized teams from the Overland Park police and fire departments investigated a powdery substance which was found in a file room at an immigration office on Wednesday morning.

At 10:30 a.m. Overland Park fire and Johnson County Med-Act were dispatched to 7600 West 119th Street in the Rosana Square shopping center.

Overland Park Fire Chief Bryan Dehner says arriving crews found a powdery substance in a file room.

Employees of the office were evacuated as the Overland Park Police Department's Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team [bomb squad] and Overland Park Fire Department's Haz-Mat Team investigated the substance.

At 12:20 p.m., Overland Park Fire Department Media Manager Jason Rhodes told Operation 100 News that crews were still working on the scene to determine what had been found.

Minutes later, sources confirmed to Operation 100 News that crews had determined the substance was not harmful.

Just after 1 p.m. Fire Chief Dehner told Operation 100 News, "we were called to check out a concerning substance and it all checked out."

"With the aid of sophisticated metering and explosive detection canines, all threats were ruled out," Chief Dehner said in a 2 p.m. news release. "All employees are back to work without any further medical treatment."

Children and babysitter escape Friday afternoon house fire

Shawnee fire officials say three children and their babysitter escaped a house fire near Blackfish Parkway and Pflumm Road on Friday afternoon.

Firefighters from Shawnee, Lenexa, and Overland Park were dispatched to the home at 13402 West 74th Street at 2:40 p.m.

Shawnee Fire Marshal Corey Sands says one of the children, a 14-year-old boy, heard what he described as a "crackling" sound. The boy looked out a window and saw that the roof was on fire and quickly alerted the babysitter.

The babysitter and all three children, ages four, six, and 14, got out of the house and called 911.

Firefighters arrived and quickly knocked down the fire on the home's wood shake roof.

Fire investigators determined that the fire was sparked by a section of Christmas lights which had arced against the metal guttering, starting a fire involving leaves in the gutters. The fire then extended to the home's wood shake roof.

"Fires that involve wood shake shingle roofs move very quickly," Fire Marshal Sands said. "The residents quick call to 911 and the fire crews quick stop to this fire saved this home.”

Firefighters also rescued the family's Christmas tree and presents.

No injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $40,000. Sands says the family will be working with their insurance company.

Elementary student reports possible stranger danger

Posted: December 18, 2018 - 12:31 p.m.

A Lenexa elementary student reported a possible case of stranger danger to school officials Monday morning.

Mill Creek Elementary School Principal Michelle Lord sent a message to parents on Monday informing them of the reported incident. Mill Creek Elementary is located in the 13900 block of West 79th Street.

"A student on the way to school this morning was approached by an individual in a gray Jeep," Principal Lord said in the message to parents. "The driver waved at the student to get in the vehicle."

Principal Lord said that the student did not engage with the driver, continued on his way to school, and told an adult what happened.

Lenexa Police say the driver of the Jeep was possibly waving to let the student know that he could cross the street since this occurred at an intersection.

Master Police Officer Danny Chavez says police are handling this as a suspicious activity incident and they do not consider the driver of the Jeep to be a suspect.

"For the same reason, we are not issuing any kind of 'attempt to locate' on the vehicle," Ofc. Chavez said. "The Shawnee Mission School District Police was also made aware of this incident."

Principal Lord asks that students and parents remain vigilant and report any person who may be acting in a strange manner.

"We need to encourage students to remember: 'if you see something, says something'," Principal Lord said in her message.

Officer Chavez adds, "Children should be reminded of the three basic rules with strangers: don't talk to them, don't take anything from them, don't go with them."

Shawnee Fire Department debuts new fire truck to public

Posted: November 26, 2018 - 6:00 a.m.
Updated: November 26, 2018 - 8:23 p.m.

A custom built 2018 Pierce Velocity recently ran its first calls as Engine 71 out of the John B. Glaser Fire Station.

After months of planning, designing and anticipation, the Shawnee Fire Department is debuting its newest addition to the fleet. The custom built 2018 Pierce Velocity ran its first calls as Engine 71 out of the John B. Glaser Fire Station this week.

The  John B. Glaser Fire Station, also known as Station 71, is one of the busiest fire stations in the state of Kansas and home to the second busiest Johnson County Med-Act ambulance in the county.

At the direction of Fire Chief John Mattox, the department’s apparatus committee designed the new engine to be the first to display an updated gray over red color scheme.

Shawnee Fire Marshal Corey Sands and Firefighter Duffy Muehlberger gave Operation 100 News a sneak peek of the new engine last week.

The Shawnee Fire Department's brand new 2018 Pierce Velocity is running its first calls as Engine 71 this week.

The color scheme is a subtle nod to the history of the Shawnee Fire Department, Sands said.

The burgundy of the new engine resembles the burgundy of the 1930 REO Speed Wagon.

From a small compartment behind the driver’s door for that firefighter to store their equipment to leather seats embroidered with the department’s logo,  the engine was built from the ground up with functionality and cleanliness in mind. The leather seats, which can easily be wiped down when dirty, are an example of another proactive step the department has taken to help firefighters keep their equipment and living quarters free of cancer-causing contaminants.

The new Engine 71 features full LED lighting for increased visibility.

The five-year-old fire engine that previously served as Engine 71 will be reassigned to Fire Station 74 where it will become Engine 74 when the new station opens in January.

Shawnee murder-suicide victim identified as former college basketball standout

Posted: November 11, 2018 - 6:41 p.m.
Updated: November 11, 2018 - 11:50 p.m.

Police have identified a former college basketball player in Kentucky as the victim of a murder-suicide in Shawnee.
Shawnee Police found two people dead in an apparent murder-suicide in the city's undeveloped Riverfront Park, 5500 block of Frisbie Road.
Shawnee Police are still investigating the incident, which occurred in the city's undeveloped Riverfront Park early Sunday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Courtney Bivins, a 27-year-old resident of Kansas City, Missouri. Police say 34-year-old Joshua P. Mobley, of Mission, Kansas, shot Bivins and then himself.

"The two were not in a domestic relationship with one another but were close friends," Major Sam Larson said in a news release on Tuesday.

Larson said officers were dispatched at 12:55 p.m. on Sunday to the 5500 block of Frisbie Road in Riverfront Park to check the area for a possibly endangered person, at the request of the Kansas City, Mo. police department. When Shawnee officers arrived at the scene, they located the two victims.

Sources told Operation 100 News both victims were found near a late-model Ford F-150; they were outside of the truck on the gravel road.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that Bivins played in 19 games at Western Kentucky University before transferring to Campbellsville University, where she graduated in 2013 with a biology degree. Campbellsville said Bivins, who previously went by the last name of Clifton, was a nurse and had been “actively pursuing a career field in anesthesiology.”

Campbellsville Sports Information Director Jordan Alves said Bivins, who ranked 14th in the NAIA for 3-point shooting and 18th for total scoring during her senior year, could “shoot it with the best of them.” She is also ranked 14th on Campbellsville’s women’s all-time scoring record.

“We are deeply saddened by the news of this tragedy,” Campbellsville President Michael V. Carter said in a release. “Courtney was fun to watch on the court, and I remember her talents fondly during her time as a Lady Tiger. We ask that everyone involved with Campbellsville University keep the Clifton and Bivins families in their prayers during this time.”

The university said funeral arrangements have not been made for Bivins.

Friends of Mobley tell Operation 100 News that he grew up in Shawnee and graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in 2003. He also attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City and worked at Truman Medical Center as a Nurse Anesthetist.

Shawnee Fire Department trains for mass casualty crash

Posted: October 29, 2018 - 9:35 p.m.

For three consecutive days last week, all 66 Shawnee Firefighters worked their way through a mock mass casualty crash. Each day the scenario involved a school bus, several vehicles, and volunteers playing the role of injured and hysterical people at the scene.

Shawnee firefighters peel back the roof of a vehicle to remove a dummy that was trapped in the simulated crash with a school bus.
Last Wednesday’s scenario involved 17 victims with varying levels of injury spread among three passenger vehicles and the school bus. 11 volunteers filled the school bus, which in the drill had been rear-ended in as part of a chain-reaction crash. One car was partially under the rear of the bus. A second car was on its roof and partly on top of the first car. A third car was rolled onto its side near the front of the bus and was blocking all access to the door of the bus.

Firefighters arrived on the scene of the simulation to find a school bus involved in a crash with three other vehicles and multiple victims trapped.

Firefighters had to use struts, straps, and large chains to stabilize all involved vehicles before they could begin the work of safely removing all of the injured. A firefighter and a Johnson County Med-Act paramedic were lifted through the emergency window of the bus to start evaluating injuries inside as other firefighters worked to cut a hole in the wall of the bus.

One-by-one the injured passengers of the bus were lifted off and then moved across the scene to Johnson County Med-Act’s triage area where their injuries would be evaluated further.

After all of the victims had been removed from the vehicles, firefighters and paramedics gathered to discuss the drill and assess their response and handling of the various aspects.

Shawnee Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Pyle addressed everyone who participated in the exercise after its conclusion.

Deputy Fire Chief Sal Scarpa told Operation 100 News this drill was the first time they had the opportunity to use a school bus.

“On a three or four vehicle crash we may see five or six people with injuries,” Scarpa said. “The school bus changes everything, and we have to be prepared for that.”

The school bus was donated to the department for use in the scenario by the Kincaid Group which operates school buses for the Shawnee Mission School District as DS Bus Lines. Several Kansas City area towing companies donated the passenger vehicles.
