Investigators say the accident occurred at approximately 3:58 a.m., when Lenexa Police received a 911 call following the accident. Police and Johnson County Med-Act declared the subject deceased at the scene of what was only described as a "traumatic injury."

The driver has been identified as 55-year-old, Larry R. Gudgel of Olathe. Troopers say Gudgel was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured. Investigators transported Gudgel to the hospital for a routine post-accident blood draw. No citations have been issued following the accident.

Moderate risk of severe weather today in parts of Kansas

Posted: April 27, 2012 - 7:20am
Updated: April 27, 2012 - 3:25pm

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, Oklahoma has upgraded their prediction for severe weather in central and eastern Kansas today.

As a surface low moves across Kansas, strong southerly winds are expected. These winds will help a warm front move northward into eastern Kansas. These factors contribute to the now increased "Moderate" risk of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes late this afternoon into this evening.

The main threat for the Kansas City and Lawrence area still appears to be large hail, possibly as large as golf ball sized. Douglas County has been placed under at Tornado Watch until 9 p.m..

The categorical outlook shows the new "Moderate Risk" area for severe weather potential. This area extends from extreme west-central Missouri extending across eastern and central Kansas to near Salina, Kansas. (More maps below).

The Olathe Fire Department was called to Aberdeen Village Assisted Living and Retirement Center at 3:20 p.m. Thursday. A 911 call reported a fire in the first level kitchen area. The facility is located at 17500 W 119th Street in Olathe.

Firefighters and Olathe Police assisted in evacuations of some of the residents. Crews ordered a second alarm response due to the size of the facility and the number of residents who live on the site.

The fire is said to have been contained to the kitchen area and was extinguished by the building's sprinkler system before fire crews arrived. Crews checked attic spaces and reported that the fire had not spread into the attic or the building's roof.

Firefighters from the Lenexa Fire Department responded on the second alarm to assist with the call.

Investigators say the fire was a grease fire and started in the facility's commercial kitchen. Damage is estimated at $15,000. No injuries were reported.

Updated: April 17, 2012 - 12:38am

Olathe Police are seeking the public's help after a 17-year-old was shot Sunday night, as first reported, right here, by Operation 100 News.

Police say they were called to the address in the 200 block of N Walnut Street at 10:41 p.m., Sunday, April 15, 2012.

A statement released by Police on Monday morning says, officers found a 17-year-old black male victim suffering from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. The victim remains hospitalized and in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Tuesday, Police now say they are seeking a red, 2009 Volkswagen Beetle with Wyandotte County, Kansas license plates. The vehicle is also said to possibly have a softball sized dent with chipped paint, on the right rear fender and an unknown sticker in the rear window. Police are not saying that the vehicle is directly connected to the shooting. A similar vehicle was seen in the area, involved in suspicious activity just before the shooting occurred.

The suspect is described as a clean shaven black male, slender build with either braids or dreadlocks. He is said to be in his late teens or early twenties and was last seen wearing dark clothing and a dark baseball hat. The suspect left the area in a maroon 4 door midsized vehicle, which was driven by a white female with shoulder length blonde hair.

Monday afternoon, Police say that the victim is not believed to have known the the shooter. The two apparently were involved in a verbal altercation after a traffic related issue, when the still unknown suspect shot the victim in the stomach.

Investigators ask anyone with information to contact them at 913-971-6950 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).

Weather: HIGH RISK of severe storms today

Posted: April 14, 2012 - 6:13am
Updated: April 14, 2012 - 4:20pm

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, Oklahoma has stuck with their earlier prediction of "Life-Threatening High Risk" of severe weather for Saturday.

SPC forecast for severe weather potential Saturday, April 14, 2012
Click map to view larger
The highest risk area for severe weather today is across most of central and eastern Nebraska, parts of north central Kansas and western Iowa. There is also a high risk for later this afternoon and evening for parts of south central Kansas and north central Oklahoma.

Areas included in the "Moderate Risk" include the remainder of central and eastern Nebraska, western Iowa, northwestern Missouri, central and eastern Kansas, along with parts of northern and central Oklahoma.

A slight risk area includes a large portion of the central and southern plains, from Texas north to southern parts of Minnesota and South Dakota.

Maps: Areas within the black hatching are considered the most likely areas for the activity to occur.

SPC forecast of hail potential Saturday, April 14, 2012

The SPC predicts that weather conditions should be favorable for "supporting long-lived supercells capable of producing strong tornadoes" for areas of Kansas, Oklahoma and stretching into north central and northwestern Texas. Forecasters also warn of the potential for strong wind gusts in excess of 70 miles per hour and very large hail of 2 inches in diameter or greater.

Anyone living within this region should insure that they have a way to receive severe weather warnings late Saturday afternoon and into the overnight hours, including while they are asleep. Please do not rely solely on outdoor warning sirens.

Remember to charge cell phones in advance of the storm. After the storm remember that using text messaging and social media is much easier on wireless (cell phone) networks. Wireless calling consumes more bandwidth than text messaging. Using a wireless call for a non-emergency conversation may be enough to keep someone who needs emergency assistance from easily accessing 911 to get the help they need. If you are not in immediate danger please consider using text messaging or social media to inform family and friends that you are safe.

Those located within the predicted areas are encouraged to stay tuned to local media and/or NOAA Weather Radios and have a safety plan in place as this is a potentially deadly situation.

Outdoor warning sirens are intended to provide tornado warnings only for those who are outdoors. Outdoor sirens may not wake you in the night and alert you of approaching severe weather. A NOAA Weather Radio can alert you to severe storms. NOAA Weather Radios are received from the National Weather Service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Metropolitan Emergency Managers Committee (MEMC) partnered with Midland Radio and Price Chopper, launched Project Community Alert (PCA) in 2002, to offer NOAA All-Hazard Weather Radio Receivers to the public at-cost. More information on NOAA Weather Radios and Project Community Alert.

Weather: Violent tornado outbreak likely this weekend

Posted: April 13, 2012 - 3:43am
Updated: April 13, 2012 - 4:18am

This is not something that I normally report on but, I believe this is going to be significant enough that an early heads up will be useful.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, Oklahoma has issued a "High Risk" of severe weather for their Day 2 (Saturday) forecast period. This is an extremely rare occurrence for the SPC to issue a "High Risk" in a Day 2 forecast.

Maps:

Anyone living within the black hatched areas, of the second map, should expect severe weather Saturday evening into early Sunday morning.

The SPC warns of the potential for; very large hail of 2 inches in diameter or greater, strong wind gusts in excess of 70 miles per hour, and potentially long track tornadoes. This includes areas of Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. The highest risk areas are expected to be along Interstate 35 from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma extending north to near Salina, Kansas. Wichita, Kansas is also within the highest risk area. Areas of Kansas between Salina and Kansas City should be prepared for the approaching storms. This includes Lawrence, Emporia, Ottawa, and the Kansas City area.

Storms are expected to begin in the area by late afternoon Saturday and last through the evening and overnight hours as they move East/Northeast. The storms are expected to maintain their severe potential after dark, making this storm especially dangerous.

Anyone living within this region should insure that they have a way to receive severe weather warnings late Saturday afternoon and into the overnight hours, including while they are asleep. Please do not rely solely on outdoor warning sirens.

Those located within the predicted areas are encouraged to stay tuned to local media and have a safety plan in place as this is a potentially deadly situation.

Several injuries reported in early morning house fire

Posted: April 11, 2012 - 1:53am
Updated: April 11, 2012 - 4:18am

While this fire occurred outside of the normal reporting area for Operation 100 News, it still seems worthy of being reported.

An early morning fire forced six people from their home in Butler, Missouri (Bates County), approximately 60 miles south of downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Officials say the fire broke out at 210 W Dakota Street shortly after midnight, Wednesday morning.

Initial reports indicated that at least two people escaped the fire through a second story window, a drop said to be "more than 10 feet" to the ground.

Officials confirm that three people have been transported by air ambulance to Kansas City area hospitals.

Two LifeFlight Eagle helicopters from the Kansas City area responded along with a MedFlight helicopter from Nevada, Missouri. All three helicopters transported victims to Kansas City area hospitals.

A source familiar with the incident reports that a "46-year-old male" victim was admitted to the burn unit at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Another male, said to be 18-years-old, suffered trauma injuries from a long fall and smoke inhalation. A child was also reported to have been transported by the third helicopter to Children's Mercy.

The State Fire Marshal has been requested to respond to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
