Crossover on US-69 leads to head on fatality accident

The Kansas Highway Patrol has now identified the driver killed in this accident as 57-year-old, Scott E. Klein of San Clemente, California. Klein was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The other driver has been identified as 45-year-old, Marilyn S, Nickell of Drexel, Missouri. Nickell was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas where she is listed in stable condition.

Troopers say they are still investigating why Nickell's 1997 GMC Safari mini-van crossed the median and drove into oncoming traffic. A preliminary accident report shows that after crossing the center median, Nickell drove on the inside (left) lane of southbound US-69 while traveling northbound. Klein was traveling southbound in that same lane when the accident occurred. Nickell is believed to have driven into oncoming traffic for at least a mile and a half before prior to the accident. Investigators say that both drivers were wearing their seat belts and they continue to investigate whether or not Nickell was impaired by alcohol or a medical condition at the time of the crash.

The Louisburg Fire Department was dispatched at 5:34 a.m. after the Miami County Sheriff's Office received reports of a head on accident on US-69 Highway approximately two miles south of K-68 Highway, near Louisburg. Less than two minutes before the Fire Department was dispatched, Deputies were advised of a mini-van driving northbound in the southbound lanes of US-69 Highway. Highway Patrol Troopers say that a dispatcher was still on the phone with one of the people reporting the wrong-way vehicle when the head-on crash occurred.

Miami County Deputies arrived first at the scene of the accident and reported GMC mini-van on its side in the median with a female trapped inside. A second deputy reported that the other vehicle, a Ford Fusion, had one occupant inside. The male driver of the Ford was confirmed to be deceased by Miami County EMS personnel.

Louisburg Firefighters spent about 50 minutes extricating the female driver from the crashed mini-van. She was then transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, by a LifeFlight Eagle helicopter. Troopers say that she was alert and talking as she was loaded onto the helicopter and is cooperating in the investigation.

A source familiar with the incident tells Operation 100 News that the injured driver is an approximately 45-year-old female. Her injuries were said to serious but, not immediately life threatening, per the source.

The Kansas Highway Patrol and Miami County Sheriff's Office continue to investigate the accident and have not released any further details.

District Attorney warns of door-to-door salesmen

Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe is reminding residents to exercise caution when encountering individuals soliciting sales or donations door-to-door. This week Police in Leawood and Overland Park received complaints regarding door-to-door magazine salesman with an out of state company.

The District Attorney's Office says that transient merchants are often required to obtain a special license to conduct business in Johnson County. They are also required to provide a three-day right to cancel any sale made to a resident at their home. Often, these businesses conduct sales in Kansas for a short period of time and then leave the area, making cancellation or resolution of complaints difficult. In some cases, citizens pay for magazines or other merchandise and never receive the product.

Your local city office can assist residents who would like to post a 'No Solicitation' sign at their home. Door-to-door salesmen are not allowed to knock on doors where there is a no solicitation sign posted.

If you or someone you know has purchased magazines or donated money to a door-to-door salesman affiliated with Allied Group, Allied Magazine Sales, Absolute Marketing or Marquis Fulfillment Agency within the last two weeks, you are asked to contact the Johnson County District Attorney's Consumer Hotline at 913-715-3003.

Police quickly apprehend two burglary suspects

Shawnee Police were called to an address in the 19200 block of west 65th Terrace around 7:30 a.m., Monday after receiving a report of a burglary. The caller reported that he had interrupted a burglary and that two white male suspects ran into a wooded area behind the address.

Police were able to quickly establish a perimeter in the area and dispatched a K-9 unit to assist in the search. As officers stood by awaiting the arrival of the K-9, one officer reported spotting the two men. Due to the area being surrounded and the responding K-9, that officer did not give chase.

A short time later Emergency Dispatchers began receiving reports of two white males running southbound, out of a wooded area and crossing Shawnee Mission Parkway. Seconds later multiple new witnesses, in the 19200 block of Midland Drive, reported the two were now running near the rear of their property.

By 7:47 a.m., officers reported that they had the two males at gunpoint near the intersection of Midland Drive and Lawrence Road, just east of where witnesses had reported seeing the men. Both suspects were apprehended without further incident.

Officers also requested a tow truck for a stolen vehicle which was parked near the address of the initial burglary. The vehicle was stolen sometime overnight from an area business.

Police Officer injured in morning accident

A Gardner Police Officer was involved in a two vehicle accident Saturday morning. The accident occurred around 7:30 a.m., in the 700 block of E Main Street.

Fire crews, from Johnson County Fire District No. 1, reported that two vehicles were involved in the accident and both had sustained moderate damage.

Johnson County Med-Act reported that a Police Officer and a civilian were said to have suffered minor injures in the accident and were transported, by Med-Act, to an area Hospital to be checked out.

Due to the accident involving a Gardner Police Officer, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident.

No other details were immediately available.

Superior Chevrolet burglary

Security at Superior Chevrolet, 8300 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Merriam, alerted Police of a burglar who was on the property around 3:30 a.m., Saturday.

Officers from Merriam, Overland Park and Shawnee organized a perimeter in the area and deployed one of Shawnee's K-9 units to search for the suspect.

The search ended without anyone being apprehended shortly after 4 a.m..

Merriam Police say they continue to investigate the incident and they are not releasing any further details regarding the incident at this time.
