Escapee possibly spotted in downtown Kansas City

Kansas Department of Corrections officials say escaped Lansing Correctional Facility inmate, Gary Furthmyer 59, has possibly been spotted in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
Officials say that they have received reports of several possible sightings of Furthmyer near homeless shelters. The statement says it is possible that Furthmyer has grown his hair and has additional facial hair. He has previously used the alias of Frank Schell.

Furthmyer walked away from his minimum security job assignment around 3 a.m., April 18th. There have been no confirmed sightings since. He is 5' 9" and 185lbs, with brown hair and blue eyes.

KDOC reminds the public that all escapees should be considered armed and dangerous.

Furthmyer was serving a sentence of six to 25 years for Indecent Liberties with a child and Aggravate Felony to Appear. All of his charges were out of Sedgwick County, Kansas. 

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Gary Leslie Furthmyer is urged to call 911 or the Lansing Correctional Facility at 913-727-3235.

Single vehicle accident leaves one seriously injured

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after a man was seriously injured in a single vehicle accident on Interstate 35 in Lenexa.

Troopers say the accident occurred around 6:00 a.m.. One vehicle left the highway and rolled. Investigators identified the driver as 24-year-old Jason A. Varughese, of Pahrump, Nevada.

Investigators say Varughese was northbound in the right lane of Interstate 35, traffic in front of his vehicle slowed and in attempt to avoid colliding with one of the slowing vehicles, Varughese made an avoidance maneuver to the right. His vehicle went off of the roadway, struck a culvert and overturned. Varughese was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

After crashing Varughese extricated himself from the crashed 2001 Toyota passenger car and began walking northbound along the highway, where he was located by the Kansas Highway Patrol. He was later transported by Johnson County Med-Act to an area hospital, where he was said to be in serious condition Friday morning.

Woman arrested after man is stabbed

Update: Lenexa Police say that a 50-year-old woman has been arrested in connection to this morning's stabbing. The male victim was treated and released from an area hospital. Police also say that the man and woman lived together in the apartment where the disturbance took place. The female suspect has not been formally charged at this time, records show she faces a charge of "Aggravated Battery causing great bodily harm."

Lenexa Police are investigating after a man was stabbed around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the 12800 block of Lord Nelson Drive, south of 95th Street, just east of Interstate 35. A witness reported two people fleeing in a red passenger car, northbound from the apartment complex. Officers located that vehicle and conducted a felony car stop near 96th Terrace and Westgate Street. Two people have been taken into custody for further questioning.

The victim is said to be a male in his early 50's with at least two puncture wounds. One wound is said to be "superficial" on his left hand and another wound to his "lower right rib cage." The man was transported to an area trauma center for further treatment.

Police continue to investigate and no other details are currently available.

Chase B. Lekan found safe in May 2012

Update: The Olathe Police Department announced this afternoon that Chase B. Lekan was located at 12:50 p.m. today. He is said to be in good health. No further details are being released at this time. In a statement released this afternoon, Police thanked the public for their assistance in the matter.

The Olathe Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in locating a missing teenager.

Police say Chase Lekan has been a resident of an Olathe Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility since August 2011. He was on a weekend pass visiting his family when he ran away from their home in Olathe.

Chase suffers from Bi-polar Disorder, Anxiety Disporder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and ADHD. Chase also has a Heart Arrythmia and is on prescription medications which he left without.

Chase is a 15-year-old, white male, 5'11", and 160-170lbs.

He has also been know to have past violent tendencies, has been suicidal and is a known drug user.

Chase was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt, grey hooded sweatshirt, long khaki shorts, Nike Air Jordan high top shoes, and a blue KC Royals hat.

He is known to frequent Two Trails Park in Olathe and also stated that he was planning on leaving for Texas according to Olathe Police.

Checkpoints & Saturation Patrols planned for this weekend

The Olathe Police Department's Traffic Unit has announced they will be conducting a driver's license check lane and saturation patrol as part of their ongoing efforts to reduce alcohol related crashes and remove intoxicated drivers from the roadways. The effort will be held on the evening of Saturday, May 5th.

Officers will set up the check lane in an effort to check motorists for valid driver's licenses, while also looking for signs of impairment, seat belt use.

Police say that anyone found to be driving without a valid driver's license will be accordingly charged and intoxicated motorists will be arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Anyone who observes erratic or dangerous driving in Olathe is always encouraged to contact the Olathe Police Department at 913-782-0720 or 911 for emergencies.

Funding for this even is provided through a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation, designed to reduce alcohol related crashes in the state of Kansas.

-The Johnson County Sheriff's Office says they will also be conducting a checkpoint Friday night into early Saturday morning in the De Soto area.

-Overland Park Police will be conducting a Saturation Patrol, Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
