Police arrest man suspected in Great Clips burglaries

Overland Park police say they arrested a man they believe to be connected with the numerous burglaries of Great Clips hair salons around the Kansas City Metropolitan area, including two in Shawnee.

Officer Jackie Zickel said Overland Park police arrested the man following Thursday night burglaries of a Great Clips in Lenexa and the Shoe Carnival in Overland Park. The arrest was made in coordination with the US Marshals Service Fugitive Apprehension Task Force.

"We have reason to believe he has been involved in several of the other robberies as well," Zickel said.

Shawnee police began investigating two burglaries of Great Clips hair salons on Aug. 23. Officers were called to the first store, located at 22403 West 66th Street, around 6 a.m. for a burglar alarm. On arrival officers found the glass in the front door had been shattered and the business had been burglarized.

Other officers began checking the three other Great Clips locations in the city and found that the store at 15943 West 65th Street had also been burglarized. Again, the glass in the front door had been broken out and someone had burglarized the business.

Major Doug Orbin said the Johnson County Crime Lab processed both scenes.

At least 12 Great Clips stores have been burglarized since June according to police although Zickel said she could not confirm if the man arrested this week has been involved in all of them.

The Great Clips located at 5012 Roe Boulevard in Roeland Park and the location at 11732 West 95th Street in Overland Park were both burglarized early Friday, August 22nd.

75th Street and Interstate 35 construction project update

The Kansas Department of Transportation says the ramps on the south side of 75th Street will reopen on Tuesday, September 2nd. The ramps were closed in July for pavement repair work.

Beginning Tuesday, September 2nd through late October the ramps on the north side of 75th Street will be closed for the same work to be completed.

Marked detours will be provided.

The detour for traffic on southbound Interstate 35 will exit at 67th Street, east to southbound Antioch Road, back to 75th Street.

The detour for drivers trying to get onto northbound Interstate 35 will continue also use Antioch Road and the 67th Street entrance ramp.

Traffic on 75th Street will be shifted to the south side of the bridge, with one through lane in each direction.

KDOT says drivers should expect major delays during peak commute times.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2015 and is being overseen by the city of Overland Park.

More construction this weekend on 75th Street

The intersection of 75th Street and Switzer Road will be closed this weekend for storm drainage repair work.
Overland Park project manager Brian Scovill says the closure will start Friday between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.. Work is expected to keep the intersection closed until around 6 a.m. Sunday, weather permitting.

Miles Excavating will be replacing a storm drainage pipe which runs under the intersection.

Scovill says there will be marked detours and businesses in the area will be open throughout the weekend.

Westbound traffic will be detoured at Antioch Road to Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Eastbound traffic will be detoured at Nieman Road to Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Employee robbed in Taco Bell parking lot

Shawnee Police are investigating after a Taco Bell employee was robbed in the parking lot Thursday morning.

Police say the robbery occurred at approximately 10:14 a.m. at the Taco Bell in the 10 Quivira Plaza shopping center. The Taco Bell is located at 12014 Shawnee Mission Parkway, just west of Quivira Road.

Operation 100 News was on scene shortly after the robbery and confirmed with a Shawnee Police Sergeant that the robbery occurred outside of the business and no one had been injured.

Police set up a perimeter in the area and called in an off-duty K-9 officer to conduct a search of the area. The search did not locate the suspect.

In a statement released just before 5 p.m. Thursday, police say the victim told them, "he was approached by the suspect who demanded the money he was carrying."

Operation 100 News has learned that the employee was carrying an unlocked bank bag when the suspect approached the victim and implied that he had a weapon.

Police say the suspect is a black male in his late 20's, approximately 5ft 11in to 6ft 2in tall, and 170-190lbs. He had short hair and a full stubble type beard. The suspect was wearing black jeans and a burgundy polo shirt with horizontal stripes. He was last seen in a burgundy, late 1990's or early 2000's model, Ford Taurus with a damaged front corner and broken headlight.

Police: driver suffered a seizure, causing crossover accident

Operation 100 News has obtained a copy of the accident report from last weekend's accident, which left four people injured.

The report states that police and emergency room doctors believe the driver of the white Ford Mustang suffered a seizure, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, and cross the raised center median.

According to the report, the Mustang was traveling eastbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway, just east of Nieman Road, when the driver suffered a seizure. The Mustang crossed the median and collided head on with a Chevrolet Equinox that was traveling westbound on the inside lane.

A 19-year-old Shawnee man was behind the wheel of the 2006 Ford Mustang. Police say he was on his way to work in Merriam. He was wearing his seat belt and the vehicle's front airbag deployed in the crash.

A 24-year-old Leavenworth woman was driving the westbound 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. A 27-year-old woman was a front seat passenger and the driver's one-year-old son was secured in a car seat in the back seat. Police say both women were wearing seat belts, front and side impact airbags also deployed in the accident.

The report also confirms that four Johnson County Med-Act ambulances transported all four people involved, to area hospitals. The one-year-old was transported to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

Police spoke to a man who was traveling westbound, behind the Equinox, who witnessed the Mustang cross the median and the crash.

A Shawnee Fire Battalion Chief was stopped on northbound Nieman Road at Shawnee Mission Parkway when he heard the collision. He made his way to the crash scene, called for additional fire and medical resources and the police to respond.

Operation 100 News will not be identifying those injured in the accident, as no drugs or alcohol are suspected and one driver suffered a medical condition.

An eastbound vehicle crossed a median and collided head-on with another vehicle, forcing officers to close all lanes of Shawnee Mission Parkway late Saturday morning.

Maj. Doug Orbin of the Shawnee police said that just before 11 a.m. Saturday, the driver of a white Ford Mustang suffered a "medical episode" and crossed over the raised median on Shawnee Mission Parkway. The Mustang collided with a Chevy Equinox heading westbound and carrying three people.

The accident occurred just east of Nieman Road.

Operation 100 News independently confirmed that Med-Act transported four people from the scene. An adult was critically injured, another adult seriously injured, and a juvenile along with a third adult both sustained minor injuries.

Orbin said all four passengers were transported to the hospital, all with non-life threatening injuries.

The Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the accident.

Several lanes of Shawnee Mission Parkway were opened just before noon, with the remaining lanes opened about 12:30 p.m..
