Updated: October 6, 2011 - 6:25am

Law Enforcement on both sides of the state line will be participating in a joint effort to reduce "accident-causing violations" in the Kansas City Metropolitan area on October 6th.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says they and other agencies taking part in the effort, "will be using enforcement techniques to reduce the number of people injured in accidents and the dollar amount of property loss directly associated to vehicular accidents."

The Shawnee Police Department says Officers will be stepping up enforcement and watching for drivers who fail to signal lane changes, fail to make complete stops and follow other vehicles too closely, among other violations.

Operation Impact traces its history back to December of 1989 when six area agencies met in Overland Park with representatives from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The meeting discussed the speeding problem throughout the United States. These six agencies included from Kansas; Overland Park Police, Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas City Police. From Missouri; Independence Police, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Kansas City Police.
