At approximately 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department was pursuing a vehicle which was believed to be stolen, into the City of Westwood, Kansas when the suspect vehicle struck a tree. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, who investigated the incident, the crash occurred at 47th Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard. The suspect vehicle was westbound on 47th Avenue, crossed Rainbow Boulevard and struck a tree.
Westwood's Police Station is located at the intersection where the accident occurred. Police from the Kansas side of the state line were notified that the pursuit was crossing into Kansas, however Kansas agencies chose not to join the pursuit and were not involved when the accident occurred.
The suspect vehicle was a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche with license plates from the state of Maine. The vehicle was occupied by two Kansas City, Missouri men, both 31 years old. Neither man was wearing a seat belt and were transported to an area hospital with non life threatening injuries.
