Man and woman killed in violent crash on I-35

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after an early morning accident claimed the lives of two people in southern Johnson County.

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies and Johnson County Fire District No. 1 were called to respond on an injury accident on southbound Interstate 35 between Moonlight road and Gardner road in Gardner. The incident was dispatched just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Sheriff's Deputies requested that the Kansas Highway Patrol's Accident Team respond to investigate the accident.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says that at 1:33 a.m., Tuesday, a 1993 Toyota Corolla, traveling southbound, left the highway for an unknown reason. The Corolla then came back onto the highway, began to roll ejecting both occupants onto the highway. A 2006 Dodge Caravan, also traveling southbound, then struck the Corolla before striking the ejected driver who was laying on the highway.

Investigators have released that the Toyota Corolla was being driven by 32-year-old, Jason R. Mees of Hiawatha, Kansas. His passenger was identified as 32-year-old, Jennifer D. Curbow of Edgerton, Kansas.

Both Mees and Curbow were pronounced dead at the scene. No one in the Corolla was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

No one in the mini-van was injured.

Southbound lanes of Interstate 35 were reopened at 5:51 a.m.. They had been closed since the accident occurred, just over five hours earlier.

Update: As of 5:50 a.m., Monday, Police confirm to Operation 100 News that Molly Jones has been located near a house just a few blocks west of the hospital. Authorities say she appears to be in good health and has been returned to the Hospital for continued treatment.

University of Kansas Medical Center Police are asking for the public's assistance in locating a woman who doctors consider "medically at risk." Police say that 27-year-old Molly Jones was last seen around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Authorities say Jones' "health may be at risk."

During an earlier disappearance from her Overland Park home, OP Police said that Jones suffers from a medical condition which can cause her to become "catatonic and unaware of her surroundings." 

Molly's husband, Leighton Jones, says that "Molly did not walk away from the hospital, she ran. She was on lock down and escaped. This is not a simple case of someone becoming confused and walking away. She is unaware of her surroundings and unable to take care of herself."

A source at the University of Kansas Medical Center was not willing to comment on Leighton Jones' claims. A second hospital source also refused to confirm or deny the same information.

Jones is described as a white female, standing 5'5" tall, approximately 150 pounds, with red hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a white knit shirt, gray athletic style pants and no shoes.

Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts is urged to call University of Kansas Medical Center Police at 913-588-5030.

Single vehicle crash in Overland Park critically injures one

It happened just before 2:30 a.m., near Quivira Road and 183rd Street in southern Overland Park.

A 911 caller reported that she witnessed a vehicle crash, possibly into a creek near the intersection, and that she could no longer see the vehicle from her home. Fire/Rescue crews from Johnson County Fire District Number 2 along with Johnson County Sheriff Deputies and Overland Park Police were dispatched to the scene.

Fire crews arrived, at 2:32 a.m. reporting that there was one vehicle, a Kia mini-van, involved which had sustained heavy damage to the front end. One person was found to be trapped inside the vehicle with critical injuries. An additional fire apparatus and Johnson County Med-Act Supervisor were both requested to respond to the scene for assistance with what fire crews called "an extensive extrication."

Crews worked for approximately 25 minutes to remove the trapped driver from the vehicle. The driver is said to be an approximately 30-year-old male.

Rescue crews also reported a "strong smell of Alcohol" from the vehicle.

Police and Firefighters also checked the surrounding area for the possibility that a passenger had been ejected. No other victims were located in their search.

Home worth nearly $2.3 Million damaged by early morning fire

Sunday afternoon fire investigators say an early morning fire caused between $75,000 to $100,000 in damage. Consolidated Fire District No. 2 Battalion Chief Barger says the fire was confined to the basement and believed to have been sparked by something electrical, possibly a home entertainment center.

At 12:24 a.m. Sunday morning, fire crews from Consolidated Fire District Number 2 of Johnson County were dispatched to a Mission Hills home, address of 5720 State Line Road. The 911 caller reported a fire in the basement.

The first fire crew to arrive at 12:27 a.m., reported there was "nothing showing" from the nearly 6,000 square foot home and that all of the occupants were uninjured in the front yard. After further investigation that same crew reported a working fire in the basement of the address.

At 12:45 a.m., Incident Command requested two additional fire apparatus be added to the call and that those units respond emergency.

Interior crews also reported a "soft spot" in the flooring of the first level, above the fire.

The fire was reported under control approximately 50 minutes after first units arrived and then declared to be out just after 2 a.m.. No injuries were reported.

Public records show, as of 2011, the 5,954 square foot home had an appraised value of $2,289,500.

Wrong way driver causes rollover crash

At 2:36 a.m., Saturday morning, fire crews from Merriam Fire and Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 2, along with Police from Merriam and Overland Park were called to investigate a rollover accident in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 near Antioch Road in Overland Park.

Merriam Fire arrived on scene at 2:42 a.m., and reported two vehicles involved, one of which had rolled over and both vehicles sustained moderate to heavy damage.

Each vehicle was occupied by only the driver and both vehicles required extrication to free occupants. Firefighters worked for about 15 minutes to safely remove the injured drivers.

Police say that a vehicle, driven by a 25-year-old female, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 when she struck a northbound vehicle causing that vehicle to roll over. Authorities say the northbound vehicle was being driven by a 29-year-old female.

Both women's injuries are said to be serious but non-life threatening. Med-Act crews reported that the wrong way driver was believed to be intoxicated. However, Police will only say that their investigation is ongoing.

All lanes of northbound Interstate 35 were reopened at 4:30 a.m..
